Welcome!
Welcome to our NEW LOOK Stitches & Craft Show! At the show this year you’ll see our stands look a little different with a chalkboard on each exhibitor’s stand where they can write up their show specials or new products, and a colour-coded flag which represents their product category – fabrics, papercraft, etc. Plus, this year there are plenty of new things to see and some new twists on traditional crafts. Did you enjoy colouring-in as a child? The good news is that colouring-in for grown-ups is a huge trend internationally and, as well as being fun to do, it’s relaxing and stress-reducing. What’s this about? Think gorgeous detailed images printed in simple line drawings ready for you to colour with your art tool of choice – pencils, felt pens or watercolour paints. Instead of picking up a glass of wine at the end of the day, pick up a pencil! This trend is so big in France at present that colouring books are outselling cookbooks – come and check it out at the show. Weaving is back – simple woven wall hangings make a great decorative feature in your home and weaving is such a soothing pastime. And – I thought I’d never say it – but macramé is back in a big way as well! Take a new look at crochet and learn to create sweet little floral brooches and necklaces. Get great ideas for textile art on everything from jewellery to art quilts – and don’t miss the international SAQA quilts and the local Queensland work. Plus, visit the new Bite-Size Papercraft Techniques area for clever ideas to use in your cards and scrapbooking. If you haven’t tried quilling – using rolled paper strips to create three-dimensional designs, then I think you’ll be inspired to after you see the work of guest artist Christine Donehue. Take a look at modern quilts with fresh designs that complement contemporary homes and are quick and easy to make. And there are parades of handmade fashion plus hands-on classes in all things from decorating lampshades and shoes to stencilling, sewing, making bags and purses. Come and kick start your creative year! See you there,
PS. Don’t forget to bring your handmade poppies to send to be part of the Anzac commemoration in April!

A dedicated core of volunteers and staff keep the organisation vibrant, dynamic, and progressive.

Ali will be at the show, near the SAQA art quilt display area, demonstrating textile art and mark making on cloth. And you can join a class with Ali at the show!

5000 poppies! Help us create a wall of poppies
Enjoy the newest recreational activity! Colouring-in for adults is the latest craze – try it for yourself with our interactive murals using work by popular artist Johanna Basford. The artwork is from her best-selling book, Secret Garden An Inky Treasure Hunt and Colouring Book, which features stunning illustrations of flowers, insects, birds and small animals. Originally published as a colouring book, crafters are now using the designs as inspiration for embroidery and quilting designs too! See Johanna’s artwork at the show in all its glory – and you can have a turn at colouring it in! Johanna says; ‘I hand draw all my images, preferring pens and pencils to pixels. I delight in smudgy finger prints, wobbly hand penned lines and the odd ink blot, these little imperfections are what give drawings character, soul and that true sense of organic.’ Presented by Johanna Basford and Expertise Events.
Lynn Berry and Margaret Knight are on a mission to create a field of more than 100,000 handcrafted poppies in Federation Square, Melbourne on Anzac Day 2015 for the Centenary Anzac Commemoration.
They set what they thought was ‘a challenging but achievable target’ of 5,000 poppies back in June 2013. Since then, they have increased this first to 25,000 and finally to 100,000, as this phenomenal project has taken off like wildfire. The show will feature a wall which you are invited to cover with your handcrafted poppies. For further information on the project – and patterns – visit the blog, 5000poppies.wordpress.com and the 5000 poppies Facebook page.
