Welcome to the latest issue of 01636 Magazine. I have to say that it gives me great pleasure in writing the introduction for this issue knowing that all of our local businesses are able to trade again. It is now Sunday morning and I have been reading social media reports about what a great night out they had last night, the first night out in many a month. It is so heartening to see photos of busy pubs & restaurants after the hard time that they have had, but as with most things the good folk in the 01636 dialing code area are now out supporting them and helping them get back on their feet. Lets hope after all this time we are at last getting back to normality and the life we love....Enjoy this issue. Young people, families and sports clubs are just

some of the groups set to benefit from YMCA’s new multi-million pound Community and Activity Village being developed in Newark. As a non-profit charity with community needs at its heart, the core purpose of the YMCA’s evolving Village will be to serve local people by nurturing safe, caring and educational environments in which young people can belong, contribute and thrive together. The vision for this project has been developed collaboratively with the local community, schools, sports clubs and businesses so there will be something at the Village for everyone to enjoy. Dedicated to promoting youth development and social responsibility in the local area, plans for the Village’s main building will accommodate everything from youth training, education provisions and health and fitness facilities to a digital media suite, childcare spaces, a community café and world-class climbing wall. Outdoor facilities already open at the non-profit charity’s site,01636magazine which is located on Lord Hawke Way, in Newark, include 3G football pitches for community and club use, multi-use games court and an athletic track, plus numerous community projects ranging from exercise sessions and childcare to YMCA Digital workshops for students at colleges and schools such as Newark Academy. The site itself is just a starting point as YMCA will be developing services across the wider district over the coming years to help energise local people to fulfil their potential. Programmes at the Village will be filtered into three key areas of: healthy living, social responsibility and youth development. With a particular emphasis on community projects and access to education and training for youth and NEET individuals, this interconnectivity of services will create life-shaping opportunities and touchpoints throughout a person’s life. Once finished, the Village will be able to support thousands of community members each week across all areas and facilities, expecting approximately 1,000 people on-site at peak times. Facilities will be open to everyone to use and be accompanied by integrated programmes and scholarship schemes. Pathways to education, qualifications and employment will enable learners to enrol on accredited courses with YMCA’s prospective education partners Lincoln College Group, Inspire, YMCA Awards and REAL Education. Apprenticeships will be core to the operation of the Village, integrating on-site accredited education and training with service delivery.

By 2024, YMCA plans to accommodate:

•At least 38 new apprenticeships in areas such as childcare, sports, leisure, hospitality, admin, finance, HR and IT •At least 1,200 learners per year •At least 137 full time equivalent jobs Having signed a contract with RG Carter Construction, the YMCA officially broke ground on the Village’s main building in February 2021, announcing a provisional full completion date of Spring 2022. Planning permission is already in place for the entire project and is being supported by a number of charitable trusts, community grants and fundraising events. Just some project supporters include Nottinghamshire County Council, Newark Town Council, Newark and Sherwood District Council and FCC Communities. Including the existing facilities, the entire development will cost approximately £16.5m - with the second phase alone costing £11.5m. Thanks to incredible input from various funding streams ranging from D2N2, Football Foundation together with their partners at the Premier League and The FA (on behalf 01636magazine of the government), and Triodos community investment initiatives to name just a few – this truly collaborative venture will unlock life-shaping opportunities for everyone in Newark and its surrounding areas. YMCA continues to work with key stakeholders to secure the essential funding needed to make this project a reality. The main building has been designed by Lead Consultants Rayner Davies Architects supported by Pulse Consult, Axis M&E Engineers, Tunstall Smith King Structural Engineers, William Saunders Civil Engineers and Influence Landscape Consultants. Todd Cauthorn, Executive Director for YMCA Newark and Sherwood, explained: "This pioneering flagship project is unique in that it puts the future of young people first. “It is a privilege to be working with so many fantastic community-minded partners, and we are deeply grateful for the overwhelming support we have received so far from funders, local councils and the community to ensure our ambitious vision becomes a reality. "By bringing together opportunities in sport, arts, business, education, and mental health, we will be able to make a significant and positive impact on the lives of people across North Nottinghamshire and beyond.”

NEWARK TOWN FC PHOTO GALLERY

SPORT

This month we shine the spotlight on Newark Town FC, one of the largest and longest running community football clubs in the area. Founded in 1868, the club celebrated its 150th Anniversary in 2018. With players ranging from 4 years old participating in the Junior Development Club, to a successful First Team and senior section, including a Ladies Team, the club caters for all playing abilities and is fully inclusive to all children and young adults from all social backgrounds. With over 300 junior players on the books, including the ever-popular girls’ section, there has never been a better time to get involved in this popular sport. The girls’ section has seen huge growth and success during the past couple of years and the club now boasts five playing age groups ranging from Under 10s to Under 14s, as well as the popular Sunday morning Girls Centre of Development for young ladies just starting out. Since returning to Newark and their new home ground at the YMCA Sports Village in 2019, the men’s First Team have gone from strength to strength. Unfortunately, due to the Covid 19 pandemic, the teams’ success was cut short for season 2019/2020, but under the leadership of a strong management team and the exciting developments at the Sports Village, there are very high hopes for the 2021/2022 season and beyond. Watch this space. The junior section is considered the ‘go-to’ club for local youngsters and the Girls and Ladies Teams are setting the standard and leading the way in female football. Complimented by a Disability Team, Newark Town FC really is the club with everything going on. Developing youth football at Newark Town FC is vital for future growth of the club and every player is automatically enrolled on their very own football pathway. If it is a players’ desire to play for the First Teams (Men’s and Ladies) eventually, then the club can certainly facilitate and nurture that. The name of the game though is to always enjoy the experience that football brings, physically, socially and for positive mental wellbeing. At Newark Town FC, everyone feels very passionately that each player progresses through each age group with the same manager. All their managers and coaches follow the same Codes of Conduct and ethics of the club, providing consistency and continuity throughout.

The club is proud to hold a FA Charter Standard Community Club status which is an acknowledgement of the most advanced level of club development and football provision. There are only 13 other clubs in Nottinghamshire with this accreditation, so this is something they are immensely proud of.

Looking ahead…

A club steeped in history and, with loyal and long-standing supporters by their side, Newark Town FC has a great future for generations to come. Their Board of Directors are dedicated to ensuring that the club is managed in a positive and professional manner with the importance of community at its core. There is a superb group of managers, coaches and volunteers involved and the club’s standing in this wonderful town is set. Local football at its very best and to be enjoyed by everyone. Newark Town FC – the club to watch. The future in bright, the future is BLUE.

benefits. To start your meditaion make sure you get into a comfortable position and follow a strict routine in a calming peaceful place.

Sit in a straight position and try to lengthen the spine, this will help increase blood circulation. if you are starting meditation for the first time start with small timeframes then increase you time span daily in order that you experience a timeless experience that allows your body to adapt to the changes. Remember to be kind to yourself during all the changes. Meditation teaches you self love and self compassion. Some days your brain will say no to meditation; always remember that meditation is a self healing practice and it is something you have to stick to.

Hi Paul,

Mediation produces enhanced connectivity among the regions of the brain and improves concentration and psychological wellness. Meditation can be done at any time of the day which is suitable for you. The main objective of meditation is to feel positive. It also delivers clear instructions like who are you, what do you need in life, what you need to do. The path meditation puts you on helps you to say no when you actually want to and points you towards your goals. You learn to sense the wrong intentions of people, you become more selfconfident removing the fear of judgment from your life. In a world full of chaos it helps reconnect with yourself and be at peace.

In this three-part series Dr Alan Ball provides advice and support for people suffering with stress and anxiety. The last twelve months have been incredibly challenging for many of us, Rosia Bay provides qualified Counselling for Stress and Anxiety across all age groups and is based at the Northgate Business Centre in Newark. Part 1 - What is Stress? At the most basic level, stress is our body’s response to pressures from a situation or life event (imagined or real) and Burnout is a consequence of continued exposure to stress over a prolonged period. What contributes to stress can vary hugely from person to person and differs according to our social and economic circumstances, the environment we live in and our genetic makeup. Some common features of things that can make us feel stress include experiencing something new or unexpected, something that threatens your feeling of self, or feeling you have little control over a situation. Work plays are large role in our lives & self-identity, so it is of no surprise that most stress and burnout 'situations' are a consequent of work in some way, shape or form. Symptoms of Stress & Some Self Help Tips When we encounter stress, our body is stimulated to produce stress hormones that trigger a ‘flight or fight’ response and activate our immune system. This response helps us to respond quickly to dangerous situations. Sometimes, this stress response can be an appropriate, or even beneficial reaction. The resulting feeling of ‘pressure’ can help us to push through situations that can be nerve-wracking or intense, like running a marathon, or giving a speech to a large crowd. We can quickly return to a resting state without any negative effects on our health if what is stressing us is short-lived, and many people are able to deal with a certain level of stress without any lasting effects. However, there can be times when stress becomes excessive and too much to deal with. If our stress response is activated repeatedly, or it persists over time, the effects can result in wear and tear on the body and can cause us to feel permanently in a state of ‘fight or flight’ . Rather than helping us push through, this pressure can make us feel overwhelmed or unable to cope.

HISTORY

You only live twice! We take it for granted what we

see written down on historical documents is the truth. But like everything mistakes can creep in as anyone spotting the glaring autocorrect typo on my last article will know. It should have read Commonwealth War Graves Commission, not War Games. My old teacher Mrs Taylor at John Hunt would be laughing after trying to read some of my old work from the 70's. But mistakes do often appear on documents and then are repeated if you just take them at face value. Following on from Newark's Black Friday book by Trevor Frecknall; we set ourselves the target of documenting the stories of the good folk of the Newark area during World War 2. In books about the airmen, published shortly before Trevor's death and the unpublished stories of the sailors, soldiers and the home front. Scaffolding surrounding the Casualty lists can be found in the names on development last summer the War Memorials in the town and local villages. Service personnel and some civilian's burials are listed with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Local achieves be it the local newspapers at the library or the Parish Roll of Honour in the churches are also a mass of information. Since the internet, most of these are now digitised and available to all; websites like Ancestry.com have millions of files at your finger tips. But sometimes you still come up blank. War memorials overseen by local committees all had different conditions for inclusion, some added only people born in the village, or living in the village at the time of service. Some only added those killed in action, some refused to add those that died from illness, accident or tragically by their own hand. This means names can appear on several memorials, if they where born in one area but later lived in another or few can be on none. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission register of graves was not fully compiled till the late 50's, by which time relatives had moved, so you could look up a name and there will be no local connection in the additional information or visa versa. This takes us back to the title of this piece, G. Richardson a name carved onto the Newark Town Memorial at the entrance to Newark Cemetery.

I had often put this name on the 'to do' list but came up blank every time, firstly starting off with the CWGC list, G. Richardson, then Gary, Graham, Geoffrey etc. Then just Richardson, then Richards etc but no hits. I then emailed the Verger at St Mary Magdalene Church due to lockdown and asked them if they could look in the Parish Roll of Honour for a G. Richardson. The reply came back Corporal George Richardson of the Royal Sussex Regiment killed in action Battle of El Alamein 27 October 1942. Back to the CWGC, nothing, check the Regimental Roll of Honour, nothing. Then I contacted Tim Warner at Inspire - Culture, Learning, Libraries, again due to lockdown had he anything from The Advertiser or Herald archive. Yes, came the reply, George Richardson of the Royal Sussex Regiment missing in action, presumed dead. Due to the cutting I now had a name George Richardson, age, address of Rutland Ave, and relatives, husband of Mrs Muriel Richardson to cross reference. A quick check on the 1939 emergency register and there they where George and Muriel of Rutland Ave, with 2 children and him working for British Glues and Chemicals. Even better there they both where on the post war electoral register! I posted a request via the Facebook 'Newark Memories' site but had no reply so tried the local Facebook 'Spotted' site. I got a reply from Paul Richardson, saying yes he was my Granddad, why? So I asked was he a soldier in WW2, do you know which campaigns he served and all details tallied. I asked had his family seen the G. Richardson on the memorial. Yes, we wondered if it was a relative came the reply. Well, that is your Granddad ! During the campaign to take 'Woodcock', George had been severally wounded, under heavy fire and about to be over run his unit retreated. Unable to move George or give him medical aid they had left him in the hopes the enemy would. With the fighting in Egypt going back and forth at some point George ends up back with the Allies. Unfortunately his service documents I ordered before Christmas have not arrived yet so this bit is still a blank. But George now recovered was promoted to Sergeant and found himself at the Battle of Monte Cassino, Italy were he was wounded again. Happily George survived the rest of the war and past away in 1998 aged 84. All my research meant for the books has now been passed to Nottinghamshire County Council and along with others will be added to the new Nottinghamshire World War II Roll of Honour. This is an extension to the Nottinghamshire Great War Roll of Honour which is being updated. From our NG22, 23, 24 and 25 areas I have found 3500 plus casualties of 31 nations, some still only known just by name but most listed with family details and photos. I still require photos of some

local casualties both service personnel and civilians who lost there lives in anyway between 1939 and 1947. Contact noble1969@hotmail.com .......................... SHAUN

A few minutes with Stuart, and you quickly realise you are talking to a real artisan with vast knowledge of woodworking, a deep respect and understanding of wood in all its beauty, and a passion for retaining the integrity of the medium. Looking around the showroom at the pieces that Stuart has created you can clearly see the authenticity that he brings to his creations.

BALDERTON

Here at 01636 we had the pleasure of meeting Stuart Orrey at his furniture show room based In the grounds of Holly Farm, Thoroton.

Every piece has a story to tell, the reclaimed wood can come from a long lost building – the wood panels from a Nottingham railway station waiting room, a Georgian cupboard from a local manor house, or a two hundred year old church. If you love uniqueness not found in modern day manufactured items and, importantly you possess a nostalgia for the very best of British craftsmanship wrapped up in a story once lived, then you are sure to find a piece of Orrey furniture to cherish. I would recommend dropping in to browse the showroom; you will discover all manner of tables, cupboards big and small, chairs, chests and mirrors. Besides the crafted furniture, there is a fine ecliptic mix of knick-knacks scattered about…and with the added bonus of picking up some fresh eggs from the farm’s adjacent honesty box!

COMMUNITY PAGES

Now Homes will this year be celebrating the completion of a successful 10 years in business.

The local directors Sallyann Buckley and Stephen Ferguson ( known to have been referred to as Newark’s (Kirsty & Phil) have been involved in property sales in Newark and the local area for over 50 years between them, so have a great knowledge of the Estate Agency Business and property in the area. Now Homes was established in 2010 and in that time they have expanded to premises double the size of their original office. The town centre location on Castlegate has proved hugely successful, offering customers both convenient parking along with a central location. Approximately 6 years ago they developed the letting side of the business also and now manage a considerable portfolio of rental properties. The business has moved from strength to strength and although the property market is always challenging they have never regretted the day they started. Having worked previously for large corporate agents, they wanted to offer a more personal service which was value for money and feel this has been achieved, looking at their Google and Facebook reviews their customers agree the majority awarding 5 stars.

Now Homes see many clients sellers and buyers return time after time and work mostly on the recommendations they receive. Their motto from the outset having been “SUCCESS BUILT ON REPUTATION AND RECOMMENDATION”. As Directors both Sallyann and Stephen are fully hands on in the office and have recently been joined by Letting Manager Henrietta McCabe who runs ( along with approx. 25 miles a week!) a smooth and organised operation for all those Landlords choosing the fully managed service.

They pride themselves on being available to speak to 7 days a week from 8am to 8pm ( they do take it in turns at the weekends though!) For any assistance regarding selling or renting property in the local area,. Please do not hesitate to call NOW on 01636 858311 they will be happy to help with any enquiries or advice. They NOW look forward to the next 10 years.

To arrange your free valuation or rental assessment with no obligation call NOW on 01636 858311 ( 8am – 8pm 7 days a week). Unit 5 The Coach House, 36a Castlegate, Newark, NG24 1BG 41

As with many Newarkers, I am proud of the rich history associated with the town. So, after years of research for personal interest, I took the plunge and developed a history walk to celebrate our community's bygone days. I made the decision to introduce local ghost stories due to popular demand while conducting the history walks. I didn't anticipate that I would witness people from all over the world reacting to a wide range of fascinating, unexplained activity relating to theparanormal. It is these stories that prompted me to write my book, 'Newark's Historical Ghost Walk' to share them with others.Along with my walks, I began to host another event called 'An Evening With A Difference.' These events were held at hotels, pubs and other premises of historic interest around the Newark area. They were open to the general public, although I had a bunch of regulars who would come along. In fact we became good friends. We would visit eerie cellars, abandoned rooms and other areas where mysterious sightings and ghostly encounters had been reported. One of these venues was a charming pub called The White Hart situated in a corner of Newark market place. This building dates back to 14th Century and is believed to be one of the oldest homes and pubs in Newark. On my first vigil there, a group of us crammed into the dark cellar. We asked questions and listened hard to see if the paranormal would manifest itself. Suddenly strong smell of cordite developed, as though fireworks were being set off. A lady, who was receptive to the paranormal, suddenly became distressed and told us all she could see smoke, fire and flames way down beneath the floor of the cellar. She also exclaimed she could smell something pungent, which she thought was burning flesh. Unbeknown to this lady, the smell of cordite had been reported by staff members while working in the cellar. During the English Civil War, the inn was hit by mortars and part of the building was engulfed in flames. Could the cordite and pungent smell have been linked to this attack? On another crisp Autumn evening at The White Hart, I hosted a group of six people from Mansfield

down in the cellar. They were on the event as part of a 70th birthday celebration. Not long after we started, a lady commented she was feeling a tightness around her neck and tingling up and down her arms. Some members of the group pointed out that they thought the room had a changed atmosphere. It was as if they felt someone was watching us who was not part of our group. The gentleman who was celebrating his birthday told us that someone or something was pushing down on his palms and his chair. Anothe r lady started to feel tired, nauseous and was swaying from side to side. The nausea grew until she had to run out of the cellar to be sick in the ladies toilets.

SPOOKY TALES

Newark's Historic Ghost Walks by local author Ian Gillanders

When we were back upstairs in the bar and the lady had recovered, the group confirmed that none of them believed in ghosts. They told me the event was booked as a bit of fun and had not expected to have had such an experience. I explained the same smells and sensations had previously been reported by other groups. It is thought the tightness around the neck, swaying and tingling arms is believed to be associated with a person who was hung in Newark during the Medieval times. Because he didn't die immediately, he was cut down and carried into The White Hart where he eventually died. Could he be making his presence felt in the cellar by sharing the method of his grisly death? I look forward to sharing more with you in the next magazine.

Back in 1921 the company of RG Carter was founded by Mr Robert George Carter. The company now has offices all over the East of England. It is the Lincoln Branch and its Senior Project Manager Jason Wilson that are responsible for the YMCA project here in Newark. Over the next few issues of 01636Magazine I will be keeping in contact with Jason and we will be publishing regular updates in the magazine as well as on our Facebook page. Below our question and answer session with Jason. Kevin 1-Were there many Main Contractors that bidded for this project or did the YMCA approach R G Carter directly? Competitive tender. 2-R G Carter won the contract to develop the YMCA project, is this the first time you have worked on any YMCA project. First time for the YMCA Nottingham (Not the YMCA). 3- The YMCA development is a massive project for Newark and will greatly benefit the town and its sports clubs and organisations, hopefully it will also benefit local companies, with this in mind will you be selecting sub-contractors from within the area? As RGC are a local contractor who support local business,. We are aiming to provide opportunities to our local supply chain and suppliers where possible. 4- Have R G Carter been involved with any other projects within the Newark area or is this the first? RGC constructed the leisure centre, council office and refurbished the Palace Theatre in Newark.

Greater connectivity will make journeys

smoother, faster and less stressful. Greater connectivity will make journey is smoother, faster and less stressful. For road users, apps can allow drivers to share helpful data on traffic, so routes can be better planned and hopefully less congested. Many commuters stopped using public transport during the pandemic, with cycling becoming a very popular mode of transport. Bicycle manufacturers and retailers experienced a surge in sales. Sales of e-bikes also went through the roof providing a another alternative for those not wanting to get too hot and sweaty before working in the office.

54

The East Midland’s region’s economic recovery may be advancing in fits and starts at the end of the pandemic but traffic volumes on our local motorways have rebounded to near normal with congestion returning to all the usual locations. It is a big challenge bringing employees back to the office working out how to get them there in the safest way possible. Employers have recognized the need to give their employees the ability to work from some physical location whether a central office or a location close to where employees live.

Employees will still need to commute one way or another.

NEWARK MEMORIES

I feel so lucky to have been born when I was to then be a teenager in the 1960's, a time of new freedoms, fashion, music, travelemail and the culture. Please me MOD to publicise any

events in your community Being born intolocal the RAF and moving to different countries and places on a regularor basis over the 01636magazine@gmail.com years was you just got used to but contact us something on

being told that my family were posted to a Midland small market town called Newark-on01636magazine Trent from the peripheries of London left me with dread and trepidation, being used to shopping in Carnaby Street and Biba to who knows what was I thought goingto be the worst ever. You have to remember that this was a time when there were no home or mobile phones, social media or iPads, you were very much reliant on fathers or friends with cars, local buses, trains and hand written letters and most of all the red telephone box at the end of the street. After a week of moving on to RAF Coddington I ventured into the town to have a bit of a recy hopefully to have my initial fears alaid. I soon realised that compared to where I had moved from Newark was very slow paced! with fashion at bit 'last year' me walking around with a Julie Driscoll pan stick face, black eyes and short hair in

60 60

my full length maroon leather coat, white trousers and brogues, I was I think a bit of an enigma! and very aware that I was being followed around the town by two local lads in parka's! and from that day I was introduced to many lifelong friends and the life in Newark, fears alaid! As many of us were getting to an age where we could buy and drive, the town soon became a haven for lambretta's and vespas, the local place for Mods to meet and enjoy chips and gravy was the Beaumond Cafe, the most used local pub was The Rutland Arms and the best place ever to socialise and show off the lads slick suits, Levi 501's, mini skirts, midi coats, boots and haircuts was The Bowling Green. This was also an era where international music bands were coming over to the U.K. and we were able to see and hear the very latest stars without paying a fortune like now. Boston Gliderdrome was the best for seei ng people like (little) Stevie Wonder, Ike and Tina Turner, Small Faces, Four Tops, Miracles, Kinks, The Who, Edwin Star and many, many more headliners. As time moved on the ability to travel further afield was now so much easier such as going by train to Sheffield to experience Pete Stringfellows nightclub The Mojo for an all nighter where you could hear the very latest sounds from the USA. Bank holidays was a time to travel in scooter convoy to Skegness, Margate, Brighton and Newquay sometimes meeting up with Mods from Lincoln, Grantham and Nottingham all arriving in style, driving up and down the fronts showing off the many mirrors, lights, antenna and chrome on our rides.

NEWARK MEMORIES

The many thousands of Mods who ascended on these seaside towns were, I know, not always welcomed by locals as it also attracted hostility from less amenable mods and rockers. The evolvement of the Mod culture was to move from two to four wheels, mini vans and mini's was the mode of choice for many, again with many extras attached or embellished and with this the will to travel much further. As I said at the beginning I feel so lucky to have been a teenager in the 1960's, I have so many very happy memories of that time, so many lifelong friends and Newark definitely made its mark and was at that Please email publicise anyhas time, 'the very me best to place to be' which been mortalised in thecommunity classic film events in your local Quadrophenia, the Suggs documentary 01636magazine@gmail.com or and the Brummell's last Riff book.

The Old Bowling Green night club in the 1980s

THE 1980's and nights out in Newark Please email me to publicise any Following on from my article a couple of issues events in your local community ago "A happy childhood in Balderton" I will now 01636magazine@gmail.com or teenage years take a look at my teenage years, my were typical contact us onof many other teenagers that lived in and around the Newark area in the 1980’s. From around the age of 13 during the last couple 01636magazine of years at the Grove School, several evenings a week were spent at Balderton Youth Club, these years from around 1976 were where I was introduced to Northern Soul music, on certain nights the Youth Club was packed with people dancing to the sounds of Detroit. Our DJs at the time were Kevin Draper and Chris Dickson, both excellent DJs but also both excellent dancers. Both were a couple years older than me and I used to be envious of Chris when he told me he had been to the legendary Wigan Casino . I left school in May 1979 aged 15. From leaving school I walked into a job at Talbots garage in North Muskham, I enjoyed it at Talbots but sadly the job never lasted, whilst at Talbots i turned 16 and my father took me to Johnny Duncan's Motorcycle shop on Northgate, here I bought my first set of 2 wheels, an NVT Easy Rider Moped. In September of that year, The band The Who released their classic film Quadrophenia. Twice that week myself and a large group from Balderton Youth Club went to watch the film. The atmosphere in the picture House on Middlegate was electric, we went in there just young casuals into Northern Soul but we came out as Mods, dozens of us walking around the town centre singing we are the Mods. I will skip now from being Mods as I covered Mods and the Scooter scene in Newark in the first issue.

62 62

At the back end of being 16 I got a job in the Assembly at RHP, many of my mates worked at RHP as it was the main employer in the town at the time.Members of my family were also employed at RHP, my Dad Terry was one of the company Joiners and my Grandad George also worked in the Assembly where I worked. When I started there in 1980 my wage was £50 a week, more if i worked Saturdays and an hour in the evenings. I paid my mum £10 board and I paid a couple of quid a week for the HP on my moped, this went up when I became 17 and bought my first legal Scooter, a Vespa P150X from Jarmans in Balderton. Pay Day back then was on a Thursday night, a brown envelope containing cash, oh what bliss those times were, I would pay my board on a Thursday night and the rest was mine to spend on whatever I liked. For myself and many of my friends the weekend would begin on a Thursday night. Before i got the Scooter myself and a very good friend that I worked with, Mark Clarke would walk into town, we would go for some scran in the Wimpy then walk round to the Sun Valley arcade, here we would spend a few quid on the slot machines. After this we would get the bus home and arrange to meet in the White Hart pub a couple of hours later. There was always a good crowd of us, we would do a few pubs in town then get taxis to the Maple Leaf pub, the Maple Leaf was on Winthorpe Rd . What a cracking pub the Leaf was, Thur Fri & Sat night were disco nights. Being a pub the Leafs discos finished at 11pm, from there we would either walk or get a taxi to the Bowling Green nightclub opposite Northgate Station. The Bowling Green would close at 2am, by the time I got back to my parents in Balderton it was 3 am so as you can imagine most Fridays were a write of and many Fridays neither Mark, myself or some of the others that had been out with us never made it into work. Things changed a bit once I got my scooter because Thursday nights were Scooter Club night.Over the years we used several venues for our Scooter club, The Spring House, The Maple Leaf but the longest running was the Vine, when i say things changed when i got my scooter, what I really mean is that because i went to work on my scooter I used to go straight home, this cut out going to the Wimpy and Scooter Club cut out

The Bowling Green closed its doors and was converted into a hardware shop, The Maple Leaf was demolished and houses now stand where it was, the Wimpy on Middlegate closed, the Pictures on Middle Gate closed, Balderton Youth Club closed, in fact sadly many of the places I mention have long been closed. I am glad though that I was lucky enough to enjoy these places during my teen years. Newark in the 80,s was a buzzing place with a great nightlife. Luckily though many new pubs and bars have sprung up in Newark and even some of the pubs that closed have reopened their doors, there is also now an abundance of Restaurants and Cafe Bars, there are now more hotels in the town, in fact Newark now really caters for the many Tourists that visit the town. Recent times have been times of gloom where at the weekends our town has been like a ghost town. When this miserable period is over(hopefully by the time this mag is out) and normality comes back into our lives our town will spring back to life, the bars, the clubs, the restaurants will all once again welcome people and I hope the teenagers of today can enjoy our amazing town like I did back in the 80’s.

NEWARK MEMORIES

going to the Maple Leaf and the Bowling Green on a Thursday night, these venues were now left to Friday & Sat nights. Saturday afternoons were spent either going to watch Forest or going into Nottingham clothes shopping and then to the pubs, we would be in the Mint, the bar underneath the Albany Hotel for 5pm, the Mint was always full of Forest and over half were always from Newark, from the Mint we would cross Maid Marion Way and to the pubs in the town. Friday and Saturday nights in Newark town our circle of friends had a good circuit of pubs. The White Hart, The Clinton, The Queens, Kirrages, The Cavalier,The Rutland, The Barge and Pleasethey email to publicise others, wereme great times with any great friends. events in your local community Another place we would all sometimes 01636magazine@gmail.com or go was Balderton Working Mens Club, I contact us on actually worked there at the age of 14 as the glass collector while my cousin Pete 01636magazine was the glass washer. My Grandad Clarry was the Bingo caller at the Club. In those days Balderton Working Mens was a busy place but sadly attendance dwindled and in recent years it closed its doors for the final time and is now high class apartments. The Bowling Green Nightclub was a great place in the 80,s, resident DJ Keith Vickers played all the tunes, Northern Soul, Disco, Futurist, Jazz Funk and he always ended the night with a couple of smooches where you would grab the girl you fancied and have the last 2 slow dances and hopefully end with a snog. The Bowling Green could be an unpredictable place, especially on a Saturday night if mini buses of football fans decided to stop off on their journey home from wherever their team had played. Newark being a Forest town very rarely accepted these outsiders into our nightclub especially when they got drunk and started chanting their teams names, many times the place erupted and the visitors were ejected. This is how Newark got its name " the little nutty town off the A1".

What’s the right octane level for your car? It is best to check to check your car manual to check which fuel that your car is supposed to use. If your vehicle has a a high-compression engine similiar to those used in some high-performance cars, you will probably need to use either mid-grade or premium octane fuel to prevent knocking. You should be able to tell whether you’re using the right octane level by listening to your engine, If it doesn’t knock, then you’re probably using the right grade of fuel. High octane is a cleaner version of regular unleaded petrol. An octane rating, or octane number, is a standard measure of your engines engine petrol capability against compression. The higher the octane number, the more compression the fuel can withstand before detonating 64
