SENHOUSE MUSEUM
Dramatically sited on cliffs overlooking the Solway Firth, this award winning museum is next to a Roman fort probably founded in the first century AD and rebuilt during the reign of the emperor Hadrian. Most of the objects in the Museum derive from the fort at Maryport and the Roman civil settlement attached to it. The museum displays the largest group of Roman military altar stones and inscriptions from any site in Britain and unique examples of Romano-British religious sculpture. The collection, which was begun by the Senhouse family in the 1570s, is the oldest in the country, and is of international importance. In the Museum grounds, you can climb the observation tower for a clear view of the full extent of the site, which recent geophysical survey has revealed to have been one of the largest and best preserved in the north. wildlife ST. BEES HEAD RSPB NATURE RESERVE contains the only cliff-nesting seabirds in Northwest England, to which thousands of birds return each spring to lay their eggs and hatch their chicks before returning to the seas where they spend three-quarters of their lives. Most numerous are the guillemots, the northern equivalent of the penguin; over 5,000 crowd on to the open ledges where they jostle for the best position to lay their single egg. Their close relative the razorbill is represented by only a few hundred birds, preferring the privacy of nooks and crannies in the cliffs. This is the only place in England where black guillemots nest, and you would be unlucky not to see one in their favourite spot - Fleswick Bay. In summer they are easily identified by the big white wing patch on the otherwise black body, and close views reveal their bright crimson legs and gapes. Among the fulmars and various gulls, about 1600 pairs of kittiwakes build their precarious nests of mud and grass on the most meagre foundations on the cliff face, and the interest is not limited to seabirds. Those typical occupants of many Lakeland crags, peregrine, raven and wheatear, seem unconcerned that their seem unconcerned that their homes overlook the Irish Sea rather than screes and sheep walks Many thanks to Dr. Ian Mcandrew and Doug Sim (St. Bees Parish Council Chairman) for information and photos. ACTIVITIES Cumbria Kart Racing Club grew from a small enthusiastic group of volunteers who created the circuit in 1963 and the circuit has grown into the fantastic facility it is today. The circuit is one of the best in the UK and is constantly voted for by the drivers and competitors who make long journeys to visit. The Club run the Lets go Karting Scheme, where you can come along to the circuit and have a go on a race kart, with full tuition and safety equipment. CKRC pioneered the "Racing For Buttons" program, searching for a young driver to become the next Formula 1 sensation, and this was taken up by the Motorsport UK, who introduced the Lets go Karting Scheme to encourage more people into the sport. With success of ex-karting sensations such as David Coulthard, Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton and Paul DiResta, (all of whom started their careers in karting and, indeed, visited the circuit on many occasions during their karting career), karting is becoming more and more popular. The new purpose built Lets Go Karting Training and Education Centre is now complete and provides a base for newcomers to the sport to gain experience and education. ROSEHILL THEATRE AND THE GREEN ROOM RESTAURANT are located at Moresby, near Whitehaven, with views over the Solway Firth. The theatre was built in 1959 by Sir Nicholas Sekers. On its opening the auditorium, which was designed by Oliver Messel, was described as a “rose-red silk-lined jewel box”. The theatre takes its name from the nearby 18th Century Rosehill House, where many top-class performers were accommodated over the years and enjoyed the Sekers’ legendary hospitality. Having built its reputation on classical music and drama, today Rosehill presents a varied programme including comedy, drama, music - classical, jazz, folk, rock – workshops, school performances, family events and more. It is also bringing back its popular film screenings. Following a £3m transformation, the new contemporary Rosehill building was previewed by HRH The Prince of Wales in April 2017 and opened in the summer. Work included the addition of the first-floor Green Room restaurant, while the Grade II listed auditorium was sympathetically restored. The 60-cover restaurant offers delicious food, from lunch and afternoon tea to à la carte and pre-theatre menus, with locally sourced ingredients where possible. A range of conference and hospitality options are available, with free car and coach parking on site.

He wrote : “All I ask for, at the end, is a last long resting place by the side of Innominate Tarn on Haystacks, where the water gently laps the gravelly shore and the heath blooms and Pillar and Gable keep unfailing watch. A quiet place, a lonely place, I shall go to it for the last time and be carried; someone who new me in life will take me out of a box and leave me there alone. And if you dear reader, should get a bit of grit in your boot as you are crossing Haystacks in the years to come, please treat it with respect. It might be me....”

You can soar with the birds “You can soar with the onlong thealong ridgesthe andridges high above birds theand mountain tops onthe a paragliding high above flight. mountain tops on a paragliding flight”
This has got to be one of the most enjoyable and exciting ways to see the area enabling you to view the scenery from a totally different perspective.
DERWENT WATER MARINA is situated on the north west shore of Derwent Water. Which we think is the prettiest lake, close to Keswick and surrounded by the hills of Skiddaw, Cat Bells and Borrowdale. The sheltered coves and islands, along with an abundance of wildlife, make this a fantastic lake to explore by boat. We are a Royal Yachting Association accredited training centre and have the British Canoeing Quality Mark for activity provision. We provide courses and taster / refresher sessions in sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding (SUP). We also offer group canoeing, raft building and ghyll scrambling (canyoning) sessions. We welcome groups for all of our activities and teambuilding days. For those looking to explore Derwent Water, we have a fantastic range of canoes, kayaks, stand up paddle boards (SUP), sailing dinghies, windsurfers and rowing boats for hire. Our four well appointed lakeside self-catering apartments are an ideal base from which to explore the Lake District. If you would like to enjoy Derwent Water from the comfort of your own boat, we have 58 berths afloat. Ashore there is plenty of room for dinghy or kayak/canoe storage.

The area has always been a hotbed of innovation and creativity. To celebrate this Jennings Brewery, who have been making beers drawn from their own well in Cockermouth with pure Lakeland water for almost 200 years, have launched a new range of beers drawing inspiration from this hidden history. They include : Atomic Theory (cask, 3.8% ABV) -an IPA named after Cumbrian Scientist John Dalton who advanced the understanding on composition of matter with his Atomic Theory. Fine Line (contemporary keg, 4.0% ABV) – a premium Pale Ale contemporary keg inspired by the discovery of graphite in Cumbria in the 1500’s that led to the invention of the pencil. Night Vision renamed from ‘Jennings Bitter’ (cask, 3.5% ABV) – Distinct amber ale named after Cockermouth laying claim to be one of the first towns in Britain to have piloted electric lighting. Jennings Brewery was founded in the village of Lorton (situated between Keswick and Cockermouth) in 1828 by John Jennings (1783 – 1876), son of William Jennings (1751 – 1848) who was a Maltster by trade. The business soon outgrew its home-brewed origins in Lorton and there was a need for a larger maltings and a building to house larger fermenting vessels. The nearest market town, Cockermouth, was the ideal base for expansion as it had a larger population with more opportunities to sell beer, and just as importantly the Castle Brewery site had an abundant supply of pure well water which has been used by the Castle as long ago as Norman times. The traditional values which the Jennings family instilled in the business are still respected, and combined with a modern day commercial approach, they have undoubtedly contributed to the success of Jennings ales today.

GHOSTS, FOLKLORE, LEGENDS Lakeland Hauntings works the graveyard shift An 18th century visitor to Cumberland described the county as "beauty lying in the lap of horror". With its isolated valleys, hamlets, villages and towns; folklore and tradition persist in communities as old as the hills. Follow "The Lady" as she reveals the dark secrets lying beneath the waters of the lakes, in the shadows of the fells and in the ancient superstitions of the lake counties. The stories have been meticulously researched and are based in local legend, myth, folklore, actual events and/or eyewitness accounts. The theatricality is hugely important but so is the authenticity and delving into the county's past has been intriguing and more than a little disturbing at times; discovering the imaginative, foolhardy, grotesque and downright stupid ways people in this county have found to bump off themselves and each other over the years. Keswick has a history full of murder, intrigue and tortured souls. From slate built houses to the surrounding lakes and fells this is an area steeped in legend and mystery. Experience the darker side of Cockermouth, an historic town with a hidden past lurking in the shadows of the Georgian splendour. If you think you are brave enough come with me and I'll tell tales of "Boggles 'n sec lyke " for a very Cumbrian haunting... follow "The Lady"... if you dare. Lakeland Hauntings Ghost Walks are written with an adult audience in mind but are broadly accessible to children 10 years and above. Dogs are very welcome.
Lakeland Hauntings run scheduled Ghost Walks in Keswick and Cockermouth throughout the year, booking is essential. For dates and information please visit www.lakelandhauntings.co.uk Call/text

COCKERMOUTH is one of the prettiest towns in Cumbria; situated at the junction of two rivers, the Derwent and the Cocker. It is a “Gem Town” one of only 50 earmarked for preservation as part of National Heritage. The birthplace of William Wordsworth in Cockermouth is owned by the National Trust and is open to the public. There are many small independent shops and whilst enjoying the delights of a shopping experience you can also visit the History Wall in Kings Arms Lane right in the middle of it all. The History Wall takes you through a journey into Cockermouth’s past. Jennings Brewery is situated at the foot of Cockermouth Castle. It still uses traditional brewing methods, the Jennings Brewery Tour is well worth a visit. Tourist Info Centre The Library, Main Street, Cockermouth, CA13 9LU 01900 822634
Wordsworth’s association with rivers from childhood is reflected in many of his poems. “Was it for this, That one, the fairest of all rivers, lov’d. To blend his murmers with my nurse’s song, and from his Alder shades and rocky falls, and from his lards and shallows, sent a voice. That flow’d along my dreams? For this, did’st Thou O’ Derwent travelling over the great plains. Near my ”sweet bithplace”, didst thou, beautious stream make ceaseless music through night and day”. William Wordsworth

ST.BEES 72
The village of St Bees is just south of St Bees Head, the most westerly point of Cumbria, on the coastal strip between the Lakeland fells and the Irish sea. It has a history going back over 1,000 years and has been a popular holiday destination for over 150 years. It's well known for its Norman Priory dating from 1120 dedicated to Saint Bega, who is said to have landed here from Ireland in AD 850. Also for it's 400-year old school, and as the start of the Wainwright "Coast to Coast" Walk. There is a large sandy beach with a promenade and visitor facilities, and to the north are the towering red sandstone cliffs of St Bees Head; which is the only Heritage Coast between Scotland and Wales and an important RSPB seabird reserve. The beach at low tide is a vast expanse of red sand studded with rock pools, and at the foot of the golf course cliffs there is a magnificent shingle bank composed of dozens of rock varieties sloping down to the sand. There are actually two St Bees Heads, the North Head and the South Head, and between them nestles one of the Cumbrian coast's greatest secrets; Fleswick Bay. The red sandstone cliffs of St Bees Head are one of the the most dramatic features of the Cumbrian coast. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds has owned most of the cliffs since 1973. Many thanks to Dr. Ian Mcandrew & Doug Sim (St. Bees Parish Council Chairman) for information and photos. Log on to www.stbees.org
WHITEHAVEN
Copeland Visitor Information Point, The Beacon Museum, West Strand, Whitehaven, CA28 7LY 01946 592302 vip@copeland.gov.uk
WHITEHAVEN’S growth was largely due to the exploitation of the extensive coal measures by the Lowther family, driving a growing export of coal through the harbour from the 17th century onwards. It was also a major port for trading with the American colonies, and was, after London, the second busiest port of England by tonnage from 1750 to 1772. This prosperity led to the creation of a Georgian planned town in the 18th century which has left an architectural legacy of over 170 listed buildings. Whitehaven has been designated a "gem town" by the Council for British Archaeology due to the number of historic buildings. Whitehaven marks the start of the 140 mile long Coast to coast Cycleway. It runs through Whitehaven to Ennerdale then on through the Lake District and on to the North Pennines before reaching the North East coast. At the The Beacon Museum, visitors can learn about Whitehaven's history, the Lowther family and the development of coal mining and Whitehaven’s ship building. The Rum Story on Lowther Street, is set in the original shop, with courtyards, cellars and bonded warehouses of the Jefferson family business. At the Rum story you can learn of the story of the British rum trade, centered on Whitehaven.

MARYPORT
MARYPORT has a history stretching back 2,000 years with Maeinus Agrippa, a personal friend of the Emperor Hadrian, commanding the Roman Fort posted here. It was a base for the coastal defences at the western extremity of Hadrian’s wall. In the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, Maryport was a very important port handling up to 200 vessels at a time. The Senhouse Roman museum and the Maryport Maritime museum provide a fascinating insight into this rich history. The town is situated at the Northern end of the former Coalfield and developed economically largely because of mining and sea trade. As these industries have declined tourism has become a moajor part of the Maryport economy. Museums, historical attractions, aquariam, arts and sports centre, an annual blues festival, together with many shops, restaurants and cafes make this an ideal location for visitors. The coastal scenic walks and beautiful sunsets provide simple pleasures for more relaxing times TOURIST INFORMATION The Lake District Aquarium South Quay, Maryport, CA15 8AB (01900) 817760 www.coastaquarium.co.uk
