Many of the towns’ beautiful beaches are patrolled, making them safe for swimming and ideal for young families, the most popular being Forster Main Beach, One Mile Beach, and Pebbly Beach, which also gets the thumbs-up from surfers. Nine Mile Beach has a sharknetted Rockpool and is a favourite for swimming, surfing and fishing. And speaking of fishing, it is almost a national pastime in these parts, with Wallis Lake, in particular, an angler’s delight – especially for flathead. grew up on a farm by the river in Taree, spending afternoons and weekends at Wallabi Point and Old Bar beaches,” said Jada. “After a few moves across the country we chose to raise our kids in Forster, an idyllic seaside town perfect for a surf loving family. The lakes, beaches and hinterland provide a playground of outdoor activities as well as inspiration for my business.”

but soon her sister-in-law asked for a board too. A casual photo placed on Instagram of her friend, alongside one of her boards, would soon see her business ride the ultimate wave towards success. The surfboards are hand crafted by a team of shapers and glassers based in Tweed Heads. “Our silks and artist designed collections are glassed into our boards,” explained Jada.

A keen surfer since the age of five and regular visitor to Indonesia’s Nusa Lembongan with her family, Jada harboured a desire to get back in the water in 2015 after taking time out from surfing to be a mum to her three young children. The former surf school owner and coach was finding a lack of confidence was holding her back, so to lift her mood she gave her old board a makeover, taking inspiration from a green batik fabric. It was initially a purely personal project

Nusa Indah Surfboards has now expanded to offer a clothing range that includes hand-painted silk batik dresses sourced from Indonesian artisans, linen beach dresses and also a range of t-shirts that feature the slogan ‘Surf Like a Girl’. “Hearing that my boards have inspired women and girls to take up surfing is the most rewarding aspect of my job,” said Jada. nusaindahsurfboards.com

There’s not many places around here that do this style of Indonesian food and we give a little bit of a twist on it.” Popular dishes that won’t be taken off the menu include fish tacos, Indonesian snapper and Nasi Goreng. Open for breakfast and lunch, as well as dinner on selected nights, diners can also pick up some homemade kimchi and chilli sambal to try their own Indonesian cooking at home. The surfing culture is close to Ceiron’s heart as one of the biggest drawcards at Pacific Palms. “There’s good waves around here and good fishing. It’s a bit of a tourist town, so when all the tourists go, we get to enjoy the place all to ourselves,” he said. 2/188 Boomerang Drive, Pacific Palms, Blueys Beach 02 6554 0889

Spice Monkey serves a diverse range of dishes, not available elsewhere

Spice Monkey Overlooking Wallis Lake and with one of the best water views in Forster, the popular Spice Monkey is an Asian fusion restaurant serving a variety of Asian cuisines with their own unique twist. “We also serve a more traditional sushi and sashimi menu,” says restaurant manager, Sam McCarthy of the dishes made by head chef Ben Falson. Open since June 2015, the menu changes seasonally so it can be hard to pinpoint a crowd favourite or signature dish. “Having said that, our duck wontons with spicy plum sauce and pan-fried snapper with caramelised pork belly are always popular,” said Sam. The restaurant caters for all ages and occasions. Little guests love the bento boxes, while large groups, couples and local businesses choose Spice Monkey as a suitable lunch destination or even for afternoon cocktails on the deck with views over the lake. “Spice Monkey serves a diverse range of dishes, not available elsewhere, as well as a great range of beer, wine and cocktails, in a relaxed setting overlooking Wallis Lake. We are definitely unique in the region,” said Sam. Shop 4, Reef Apartments, Wharf Street, Forster 02 6554 8767

Mumm's on the Myall

On the river’s edge in Tea Garden with its own wharf frequented by pelicans and a deck lined with blooming lavender, Mumms on the Myall has been running since 2003. Owner Jenna Menzie said her father opened the restaurant in honour of his mother (and her nan) Leone Fidden. “Her history is that she owned a fish shop here on this site for many, many years,” said Jenna. “Fishing is in the Fidden family blood. My dad is a fifth-generation fisherman in this area he asked me to come up from Melbourne a couple of years ago to run the restaurant,” said Jenna. The menu at the waterfront restaurant naturally has a focus on seafood. Head chef Alain Egloff has been with the restaurant since 2005, after having worked in Canada, South Africa, Switzerland, Adelaide and Tasmania. Signature dishes that are much-loved by locals include the Mumms Fisherman’s Platter, with a mix of fresh seafood options including prawns, oysters and scallops; fish and chips; and a seafood mornay. A local fish is always featured on the specials board, depending on the catch sourced directly from their suppliers Tea Garden Fish Market, We’re just so lucky to have some of the most beautiful waterways on the coast.

right alongside the restaurant. “We’re just so lucky to have some of the most beautiful waterways on the coast. We’ve got the river right in front of us and then we’ve got the main beaches. There’s just a phenomenal sense of community here. Mumms is right on the river, we’ve got the best view in town, I think, and it’s been in the same family for many years. My dad is still a fisherman in the area and we try and pay tribute to the fact that seafood is in our family,” said Jenna. 46 Marine Drive, Tea Gardens 02 4997 1162

Great Lakes

Paddocks Great Lakes Paddocks (formerly Great Lakes Winery) is a working farm, sustaining a herd of angus cattle, a vineyard and even native finger limes!

I

t also sustains a never-ending stream of visitors, enjoying the stunning hinterland location and pastural pastimes in the tranquil, and somewhat iconic, ‘back paddock’ – the sylvan and serene setting for wine tasting, and a calendar of family friendly music and social events. The winery produces a select range of crisp and clean whites and medium bodied reds, using fruit from the vineyard, augmented with fruit from other areas, predominantly from the renowned NSW wine region of the Hunter Valley. The cellar door is open every day except Tuesdays. Settle in and taste your way through Pinot Chardonnay, Semillon Sauvignon Blanc, Verdelho, Sparkling Shiraz, Cabernet Shiraz or a mouth-watering Semillon dessert wine, Water Lily, in a tranquil setting overlooking lush pasture and native bushland, accompanied by tasty cheeses and a delicious grazing board. Wine is available to purchase, along with a range of local produce goodies including oils and

condiments, artisan cheeses, olives and those finger limes! You can also take home prime pasture-fed angus beef packs. The beef is extra tender and delicious because the angus herd at Great Lakes Paddock grazes peacefully in a rotational paddock system, drinking clean water. The yearling pasture-fed steers produce tender lean beef, which is dry aged for a minimum of 14 days to further enhance the tenderisation process. No Hormone Growth Promotants (HPGs) are fed to the cattle, and the pastures are free of chemical additives. A ‘rustic’ function room, overlooking the back paddock, is perfect for celebrations and private functions. The unique and picturesque outlook is relaxing and welcoming, and ideal for an authentic country wedding, providing beautiful, nature-infused, backdrops for photography. Getting there From the Pacific Highway, between Coolongolook and Bulahdelah, turn into Wootton Way and follow the signs – it’s just a few kilometres to Great Lakes Paddock. From Pacific Palms/Seal Rocks, take the scenic Wattley Road to Wootton. 10am-4pm every day (closed on Tuesdays) 115 Herivels Road , Wootton 02 4997 7255 greatlakespaddocks.com.au

Hueys at Blueys From the late 1970s, the building that is home to Hueys has always been a pizzeriastyle eatery – first 'Blueys Retreat' and then 'Yankee Bobs'. In 2002 regular visitors from Sydney, Mark and Adele Workum, purchased Yankee Bobs and set about researching the best pizzas and the ideal ambience for their new venture, to be known as Hueys. Diligently tasting, testing and trialling different dough recipes and sauces to create their

Tartt If there’s one constant refrain from the customers of Tartt café and Wingman in Forster it’s “Great Coffee!” – and that might just have something to do with Little Street Roasters, one of this trio of businesses, run by Michael Tart and Jack Yeates, that have made a name for themselves as the region’s coffee gurus. Little Street Roasters, as its name suggests, is in the business of roasting coffee beans, locally in Forster, and supplying cafes across the Barrington Coast region with premium coffee. Grab coffee to go at Wingman, opposite Forster Main Beach, and absorb the funky atmosphere and delicious fare for breakfast and lunch (and all day coffee!) at Tartt café in Wharf Street.
