Add another hour and you’ll arrive at coastal Paciﬁc Palms, via the scenic Lakes Way, or in Forster-Tuncurry or Gloucester via the M1/Paciﬁc Highway A1. Just 2.5 hours’ drive from Tamworth or Armidale and you’re here, and it’s even closer from the Newcastle/Hunter and Central Coast areas.

Virgin Blue and Jetstar operate ﬂights to Newcastle airport, less than 45 minutes from the Barrington Coast. FlyPelican operates return daily ﬂights from Sydney to Taree. Flying time is approximately one hour.

Bus Busways provides daily services from Newcastle to the Barrington Coast towns of Hawks Nest, Tea Gardens, Paciﬁc Palms, Forster Tuncurry and Taree. Heading south on Lakes Way, take a detour to picturesque Smiths Lake and enjoy a coﬀee while taking in the view across the lake to the sand dunes that mark the ocean’s edge. Return to the coast via Seals Rocks Road to Seal Rocks, where the Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse presides over the area’s many beautiful beaches.

The finale to this Great Lakes odyssey is not to be missed. At the mouth of the Myall River sits pictureperfect Tea Gardens where you can enjoy a delicious meal at one of the many restaurants and cafés that line the river’s edge. Feast on fabulous local fare while the resident pelicans skim the river. Head over the Singing Bridge to visit Hawk’s Nest, a popular holiday destination that offers spectacular ocean beaches along with the tranquil bayside beaches that line the Karuah River as it meets the Pacific Ocean at panoramic Port Stephens. At the northern end of the Barrington Coast lies the beautiful Manning Valley, named after the Manning River, which rises in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range in Barrington Tops National Park, and wends its way to the Pacific Ocean. Enjoy a drink at the local pub, complete with wide country verandahs or discover the town’s quaint shops and timeless, colonial architecture to find a delicious, barista coffee the equal of any you find in more urban surrounds. The region is full of history and great stories, from the bushranger Captain Thunderbolt, who used to lurk in the Bucketts Range to prey on the gold being transported from nearby Copeland to Sydney, to Linger and Die Hill, where legend has it that bullocks pulling the timber out of the valley would perish if they stopped to catch their breath, unable to get going again on the steep slope. The Barrington Tops National Park is part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area and holds national significance. Located on a spur of the Great Dividing Range, the park is believed to be an extinct volcano. One of the largest temperate rainforests in Australia, it is home to a huge variety of flora and fauna. Take a hike along one of the many excellent walking tracks for a chance to encounter eastern grey kangaroos, flame robins or a regent bowerbird. You may spot an elusive quoll or platypus.

hen you drive from the beautiful coastal towns of Forster Tuncurry to the hinterland of the Barrington Coast, you will meet a variety of food producers, including beef farmers, cheesemakers and all types of growers. Farmers Markets are abundant with local produce and weekly markets include The Secret Farmers Market in Taree and Bent on Tuesday Farmers Market in Wingham. Monthly Farmers Markets are held at Wingham, Nabiac and Gloucester. Getting out in the country feeds the soul, and local cafes feed the belly with champions of local produce including our very own Bent on Food in Wingham. We have been working with local producers for almost 15 years and I believe that we do business in one of the best food bowls in NSW. The historical town of Wingham has become a bit of a foodie hub, where you can also taste local produce at Garden Grub Café. Wingham is also home to a yearly Beef Week Festival held in May, and Manning Valley Naturally Beef is a highly sought after product that can be found on many menus around the region. What I find so special about the hinterland is that many cafes are filled with displays of jams, pickles and chutneys that are handcrafted with love and made from produce picked off local farms. Nothing is wasted, as country folk have lived like this for decades, preserving food in these traditions. There is a quaint quality to the hinterland, and visitors often get the urge to

One of these locals, Rudi, owns Mentges Master Meats, a traditional German smokehouse located between Wingham and Taree, and a visit here is a must-do. It’s a little like going back in time, where as a child you would get to taste a little morsel of ham or sausage from the local deli owner. Take your esky as you won’t be able to resist the selection of smoked meats on offer. Seafood in Tuncurry (Worimi place name for plenty of fish) is transported around the world to some of the finest restaurants and local fishermen work the coast from Harrington to Hawkes Nest for their catch. Wallis Lake glitters with oysters farmed for over three generations. Local oysters are widely regarded as one of the world’s premium seafood delicacies, and if you have tried a Sydney Rock Oyster, it has most likely come from these crystal clear waters! Local families all over the coast are producing cheese, organic sourdough, free range eggs and meat, fine wine and seafood that is shipped worldwide, this means dishes in local cafes and restaurants are exploding with creativity as the months go by. The best way to find them is to talk to the locals. Head to the markets and meet people like Joe and Fern from Guyung Farm – they are making an impact with a farm-based business producing an abundance of micro herbs and organic greens – and BYO container for a fresh batch.

Coffee-lovers are encouraged to take time out to sip and savour a cup of liquid gold at any of our friendly and ambient Coffee Trail partners, or to enjoy coffeeon-the-go with a side order of breathtaking vistas … and use swap or reusable cups that helps reduce waste – an environmental benefit for all! The Coffee Trail is a joint initiative between Explore Barrington Coast magazine and MidCoast Waste services to reimagine waste and, in particular, reducing single-use coffee cups. The project springs from a passion to help reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill. "Midcoast Waste Services recognise the importance of working together to manage, reduce and avoid waste,” says local Education Officer Megan Griffiths. "The ultimate conclusion presented by the 2019

With a past history of breast cancer and a sister who more recently trod the same devastating path, Elizabeth Beach woman, Jo Niall, was acutely aware of how many younger women are now being diagnosed with this terrible disease. At the time when Jo was ﬁrst diagnosed 30 years ago when she was only 28, it was very unusual to see women that age with this disease. It occurred to her that now more than ever better breast cancer awareness is crucial. And so the idea for ‘BOOB LOOB’, a self-check shower gel, was born. Designed and branded to encourage women to regularly check their breasts and stay on top of their breast health. After much trial and error, the ﬁnal product came to life. With no experience in this industry it was a steep learning curve for Jo, and there were many dead ends and failures, but she was determined to see it through. Award-winning Pacific Palms-based architect, Ian Sercombe, likes to create ‘healthy and responsive’ buildings, and designs both residential and commercial buildings that mesh character with energy efficient design and low toxicity materials. Ian says his designs begin with solid planning, with a focus on key elements like maximising solar gain, natural light and ventilation, colour, form, and finishing materials. He also specialises in the use of rammed earth, which provides thermal mass, helping to moderate internal temperatures in summer and winter. Ian is the recent winner of the Australian Institute of Architects 2019 NSW Country Division Awards for Architectural Excellence in the category of ‘Public Architecture’ for his work on the Tuncurry Resource Recovery Centre. The jury of experts was led by architecture@altitude’s Virginia Wong-See, who said of Ian’s work: “The centre addressed the ideas of sustainability and recycling, both during construction and through education, helping the Mid Coast Council work towards a zero waste target.”

Valerie Wright Selected art works by the late Valerie Wright, who called Tuncurry home since 1946, have now been reproduced in a series of limited edition Giclee prints. Working largely, but not exclusively, in mixed media and oils, the artist is renowned for the vibrant colour, skilful

composition, and strong sense of rhythm and movement in her paintings, across diverse subject matter captured in still life and portraits. Each offers more than just a handful of special experiences – from the World Heritage-listed Barrington Tops National Park and its ancient Gondwana Rainforests to the boating adventures of Myall Lakes National Park. boriginal cultural sites nestle in mountains, under forest canopies, along bush tracks and beside beaches; fabulous ﬂora and fauna can be discovered, and history can be uncovered at places like the Mountain Maid gold mine in Copeland Tops State Conservation Area. Here is just a taste … Myall Lakes National Park … has beautiful lakes, beaches and coastal dune systems that provide wonderful opportunities for visitors, and conserve important natural and cultural heritage. It is one of the most visited national parks in northern NSW, with 22 camping areas, holiday accommodation at Seals Rock Lighthouse Cottages and Cutlers Cottage, boating access, and over 20kms of beaches for 4WD touring. Since 1999, this internationally recognised wetlands site, has been listed under the Ramsar Convention due to its diverse mosaic of near-natural wetlands, within a relatively unmodiﬁed coastal lake system. This wetland site houses a complex variety of habitats with rich biodiversity, including threatened species and migratory birds protected under international agreements. The Myall Lakes wetlands also have a high cultural and social value as they occur within the traditional lands of the Worimi Aboriginal people, where the varied wetlands, environments and abundant resources provided Explore Barrington Coast 50

an ideal living environment. Right next to Forster, Booti Booti National Park … is comprised of an 8km peninsula between the ocean and a lake, complete with pristine beaches and rainforests. Explore the landscape on a day trip or stay at The Ruins campground, which is well equipped and a convenient base to explore nearby beaches, swimming, walking and whale watching activities. Just five minutes from Forster, the Cape Hawke lookout offers spectacular 360-degree views along the coast from the top of a dedicated tower, perfect for whale watching. At Saltwater National Park … located east of Taree, you can bushwalk, canoe, kayak, swim, fish, surf, picnic, and even whale watch from August through November. The headland at Saltwater Beach is a highly popular surfing point break used for recreational surfing, as well as club and competition surf events. Saltwater Beach and its surrounds are a cultural landscape of great importance to the local Aboriginal Biripi tribe. There are several sites related to the Dreamtime within the park, and the area is declared an Aboriginal Place. Joint management with Aboriginal people and local residents, in association with Saltwater Tribal Council and NPWS, gives this park special local importance. Wingham Brush Nature Reserve … makes a great family day trip. Wingham Brush is an endangered rainforest community and one

of the few remnants of subtropical lowland rainforest in Manning Valley. It has at least 195 species of native plants, including 76 species of trees and 32 different vines. Wander along the boardwalk and you'll see impressive trees like the gigantic Moreton Bay figs, giant stinging tree and shiny-leaved stinging tree. See flying foxes, enjoy birdwatching and easy walking in the rainforest. Wingham Brush boardwalk connects several walking tracks for a wheelchair friendly experience in the rainforest. Enjoy birdwatching and see a grey-headed flying fox roosting site. Wingham Brush is the only known continuously occupied roosting and maternity site for the vulnerable grey-headed flying fox between Bellingen and the Hunter Valley, peaking at over 200,000 flying foxes in the warmer months. They roost by day and fly out at night to feed. Sit by the banks of the river at sunset and you'll see this spectacular sight as they fly out in search of food. Inland from the coast, immerse yourself in the World Heritage-listed Gondwana Rainforests of Barrington Tops National Park … carved out of ancient volcanic flows, Barrington Tops National Park protects one of the largest temperate rainforests in mainland Australia. It hosts diverse habitats and a wide range of birds and other animals. Easy walks, overnight hikes, great picnic, fishing and camping spots await. The park is part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia, a UNESCO World Heritage Area, and is a direct window into the past and the future, providing a link to the ancient pre-human world and a stunning and irreplaceable record of life on our planet. You can explore the rainforest on one of the park's many walking tracks, like the Honeysuckle Forest track, the Rocky Crossing walk or the Antarctic Beech Forest track. Listen out for the lyrebird whose mimicking calls ring out through the rainforest.

birdwatching and guided tours at a historic mine. It was the red cedar cutters who, battling to log 'red gold' in this unforgiving terrain from the early 1800s, ﬁrst discovered gold here in 1875. The area soon became known as Copeland and over the next 60 years more than 50 gold mines were dug in the area. According to the records, over 1800kg of the valuable metal were extracted during that time. Many relics of this mining heritage remain in the form of historic sites and derelict equipment. However, the bushland and rainforest now dominate once again. Only one hour from Gloucester, stay at Karamea Homestead for a secluded rural getaway by the Barnard River, in Curracabundi National Park … tucked away on an old grazing property, this federation-style timber homestead is ideal for mountain biking and water activities at your door.

Most of Barrington Tops National Park is declared wilderness; large, natural areas of land that, together with their native plants and animal communities, remain essentially unchanged by modern human activity. The edges of the wilderness area of Barrington Tops are easily accessible; some of the most spectacular views in the park are from Careys Peak and Devils Hole and Thunderbolts lookouts. Escape to the Polblue campground, set high up in subalpine woodland. It’s a spacious campground centred around a grassy picnic area. A scenic 3.5 hours drive north of Sydney, Seal Rocks is a coastal haven perched on a peninsula of Myall Lakes National Park, and this was where my husband Barry and I headed, only a few days in from returning home after a six month Pacific sailing adventure.

tching for another adventure, this time in our own backyard, and with a van packed with surfboard, freediving fins, wetsuits, mountain bikes, kayaks, tents, snacks and three mates – we headed north – destination Seal Rocks Adventure Festival at Treachery Camp, for a three-day weekend of activities for young and old. Long sandy beaches flank both sides of the point and can be accessed via a walking trail from Treachery Camp, home to the festival and one of the best campsites I’ve ever visited. We arrived as the Welcome to Country smoking ceremony was underway. Seal Rocks is part of Worimi country. On our first night we attended the Adventure Short Film Festival. The films featured diverse men and women from around the world, able-bodied and not, each exploring their own version of adventure. Watching the films I realised that ‘adventure’ gives everybody a chance to experience the planet in their own way. Day 2 began with an outdoor Bush Meditation and Solar Flow Yoga session as the morning sun crawled up over the horizon,

dispersing the sea mist that rolled over the cliﬀs. Next was Doofercise! Dancing around to 80s party tunes in ﬂuoro lycra, without a care in the world, is probably THE most fun I can have before 9 am.

Our crew then headed to Sugarloaf Bay for a snorkel and freedive session. I soon settled into the freediving meditative state with help from our Forster diving guide.

Later that day, I got creative in a Shibori fabric dyeing workshop while, elsewhere, people rock-climbed, slacklined, made ﬁre without matches, played epic dodgeball games, went zorbing and tried circus. Happy with my dye job, I wandered down for a body surf at Lighthouse Beach, joining Barry, who was surﬁng up a storm. After a big day, salty, happy and hungry, we showered, ate some great grub and danced til’ midnight to a high-energy funk band, The Regime. By Day 3 I can’t help it – I’m Doofercise obsessed! I woke up to Whitney Houston, slapped on some lycra and bolted out of the tent to join in. Our crew then headed to Sugarloaf Bay for a snorkel and freedive session. I soon settled into the freediving meditative state with help from our Forster Explore Barrington Coast 53

diving guide. We swam out into the crystal clear water – home to sea turtles, grey nurse sharks, healthy reefs and silvery schools of ﬁsh. One of my favourite moments was diving deep to be eye-to-eye with the placid sharks resting on the bottom of the cove. With the sun setting, our time at the Festival came to a close. We packed up and headed home, reﬂecting on what adventure means. It reinforced how important it is to explore and play in our own big, Australian backyard. Celebrating the wealth of local artistic talent, Pacific Palms Arts Inc is a volunteer organisation dedicated to supporting creative arts projects and events in the Great Lakes region.

he organisation’s annual Pacific Palms Art Festival is one of several innovative undertakings putting a spotlight on local artists, while bringing creativity and joy to the beautiful beachside locale of Pacific Palms. The annual art exhibition and sale is held over the Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend each June. Also featuring the popular Youth Art Exhibition, the Festival raises funds for creative arts programs at Pacific Palms Public School. In partnership with Pacific Palms Recreation Club (The Recky) Pacific Palms Art Inc now also curates the Lake View Gallery, which showcases local artists’ original works all year round, with new artists and fantastic new works exhibited every six weeks. The Gallery is free to visitors and artworks are for sale. Artists are invited to register with Lake View Gallery and enter the $2000 Pacific Palms Art Prize which is open to all work on exhibition. Additional prizes are awarded across categories including Oil or Acrylic, Watercolour/pastels, Open (mixed media), Photography, Environmental and People's Choice. initiative from Pacific Palms Arts Inc, – the Pacific Palms Writers Festival, due to launch in 2020 – acknowledges the region’s vast literary talent. Many accomplished authors reside in the Mid-North Coast region, and the Writers Festival is an opportunity for them to share their knowledge and experiences with festival attendees across lectures, and workshops. Young writers sessions will include the participation of children from local schools. The inaugural Pacific Palms Writers Festival will take place at the primary school in Boomerang Beach just a few short weeks after the June long weekend Art Festival. Explore Barrington Coast 54

Those attending the festival's lectures and workshops will hear from top local authors and writers from across Australia, while a young writers session will involve children from local schools. As always, all proceeds raised from the event will support creative arts projects for local school children.

Young people in the beaches district continue to reap the rewards of the Pacific Palms Arts Festival.

ince the inaugural art show in 1993, Pacific Palms Art Festival has donated tens of thousands of dollars to creative arts programs at Pacific Palms Public School. The event was founded by the school’s former principal, Ken Pares, to inspire and educate students, while also creating an opportunity for the community to come together. One student who took that inspiration to the next level was Rachel Reading (nee Brassey). Rachel now manages her own on-line Art Gallery and was awarded First Place in the Open section of the 2019 Festival. “Throughout my school years the Festival enabled me to win awards and gain the confidence to continue with my artistic endeavours,” Rachel said. “Isolated regional communities don’t have the same exposure to the arts as bigger centres and this is why it’s vitally important local residents, artists and visitors to our

beautiful region, continue to support Pacific Palms Art Festival.” Rachel is making a name for herself with her unique drawings, often depicting ocean wildlife. The Festival’s president, Cath Bennett said the 2019 Festival was an outstanding success with a record 219 artworks on display. The Festival traditionally gets underway with the official opening on the Friday evening of the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. Gourmet local food and wine are provided by sponsors and is included in the ticket price. Opening night provides the first glimpse of artworks, announcement of winners and the first opportunity to purchase original artworks on display. The 2020 Festival opens on Friday June 5 and concludes on Sunday June 7. Tickets to opening night are available from the Pacific Palms Art Festival website at palmsartfestival.org.au
