EDITOR’S LETTER As I sit here and contemplate what I should write about for this month’s letter, Alexa reminded me that today is the last day of winter. Days are getting longer, the temperatures are perfect, and we are headed into event and festival season!! This is the time of year tons of events are happening all over the area because of our perfect weather. Not too hot during the day, and not too cool after dark. In March, we had even more people find our Cocoa Beach Explorer compass! Congratulations! Don’t forget to keep an eye out around town for our compass which we keep hiding for someone to find. If you have a keen eye and find it, you will win a great prize! Right now, if you find it you will win a $25 gift certificate to Coconuts on the Beach!! You can always check out our Facebook page for “clues” on where to look. Good luck. It’s April…that means Thunder on Cocoa Beach is next month!! Like I mentioned last month, Cocoa Beach Explorer is working with Kerry Bartlett and all the great people with Thunder on Cocoa Beach. In January, Joanne Schuster reached out to me via email regarding a possible local spotlight piece on her daughter, Coral, 15. The brief information on Coral she forwarded quite intrigued me, but little did I know just how impressed I would be after meeting this young lady. Young people like Coral who exude drive, determination, and devotion are a testament to the future and a prime example of a citizen we Cocoa Beachers’ can be proud to call our own. US Olympic Training Team Coral was named to the USA Olympic Surfing National Junior Team in June 2017 and began training with the team in August. Team training takes place mostly in California, with a few training sessions on the East Coast including the recent Beach N’ Boards Fest here in Cocoa Beach where Coral placed 2nd in her division. This Team will be involved in USA Surfing’s National Training Program on both the West and East Coast and at selective times training with The National Developmental Team and the National Olympic Training Team. These young talented surfers represent the very best of Team USA and our Olympic Gold aspirations for USA Olympic

The Blue Cross Movement @thebcmovement @coral.schuster Surfing. From this talented group of 28 athletes, 12 will be selected to represent Team USA at the 2018 ISA World Junior Surfing Championships. Coral currently holds a few East Coast Titles as well as a 2nd place finish at the National Middle School competitions in California.
Coral’s favorite Bible verse - Romans 12:2 “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”
Model Student, Citizen, and faithful Christian Coral, now a 9th-grade student, previously attended Cocoa Beach Jr/Sr High but had to transfer to FLVS homeschool due to her vast training travel schedule. Even with her extensive training commitments, she manages to maintain a 4.0 GPA. Though Coral is now a FLVS homeschool student, she maintains her connection to Cocoa Beach Jr/Sr High as a part of their competition surf team where she helped the middle school team take 2nd at Nationals two years in a row. When Coral is not training or studying, she finds time to volunteer at Cold Night Ministry helping to feed the homeless. She has also founded two Christian based movements: Groms for God (@ gromsforgod on Instagram and Facebook) and The Blue Cross Movement. Throughout our meeting with Coral, she repeated reflected on her faith in God. She originally chose to share her
faith through her surfing by starting Groms for God, a movement started in order to reach out to the younger surfers and let them know it is OK to talk to others about their faith. “It is not something to be ashamed of; you should be proud of what you believe in,” stated Coral. Originally, the young surfers started some Bible studies which were doing well, but due to Coral’s traveling schedule it became hard to keep them going. So, more recently she started the Blue Cross Movement. Coral explained, “I have a blue cross on the bottom of all my boards, and people have recognized me all over and talk to me about my faith and their faith. It has started a lot of conversations and has brought me close to a lot of people that have become big influences in my life. The Blue Cross Movement is just these small stickers (as she points to a sticker on her phone) to put on whatever, so if someone sees it, they recognize it. I thought it would be cool if someone saw a blue cross on someone else’s board, phones or whatever, they could create conversations that would result in friendships that would last a lifetime.” Coral is now focusing on World Surf League (WSL) Junior Qualifying Series and Women’s Qualifying series and any local Pro events.

MALIK’S
MESSAGE
FROM THE MAYOR
C O C OA B E ACH U P DAT E
written by Mayor Ben Malik
Easter is around the corner, and I am looking forward to warmer ocean water temperatures to ditch my wetsuit! I hope the Easter bunny is going to share lots of goodies with all of you (I haven’t seen any of our little bunny rabbits at the beaches lately perhaps related to the many recent bobcat sightings, fyi a trapper is working to capture and relocate). Along with the warmer water temperatures will be the increase potential of another massive fish kill, I am fortunate to drive over the river on my way to work and back every day and was thankful for the last couple of cold snaps as the water color is not healthy. I fear we are weeks/months away from a really bad fish kill event. The lagoon’s condition took over 50 years to reach this point; voters passed a ½ penny sales tax increase to assist in cleanup efforts for the Indian River Lagoon. This tax is expected to generate $34MM (MM = million) per year for 10 years. So, that equates to approximately $340MM over the 10-year period. Sounds like a lot of money, but based upon the cost of recent stormwater projects, county officials estimate it would cost $1,000 per pound of nitrogen removed, or $1.39 billion, for municipalities along the lagoon to eliminate the 1.39 million pounds the EPA and the state propose over 15 years, from northern Volusia County to Fort Pierce Inlet. The cost to cure is beyond the present dollars allocation; and in my opinion, requires Federal funding dedicated to infrastructure improvements to clean up this mess.
stormwater/sewer plant upgrades will require Federal funding sources, and I encourage residents to write to their State/Federal elected officials to support these efforts. Clean water has no party affiliation as it is a vital natural and economic interest for all of us! Even if you don’t care about the environment (as a surfer I absolutely do!), one should care about the revenue generated by waterfront properties in terms of tax base, and economic generator for boating, fishing and water recreation activities, estimated at over $3.7 Billion (per EPA study in 2007)! Thank you for your support and allowing me to serve as your Mayor, please feel to contact me with any suggestions at bmalik@cityofcocoabeach.com or my cell at 321-794-6668.
Cocoa Beach is doing its part to assist in cleanup efforts. The recent Minutemen Project was a stormwater project to reduce runoff into the lagoon (which is why most of the funding came from grants for this project), relining of 50-year-old clay sewer pipes, fertilizer ban in rainy season (frankly, if you are on reclaimed water, there is plenty of fertilizer in the reclaimed water; no need for any extra!), dredging projects are ongoing and pound for pound is the biggest remover of nitrogen in the lagoon. The Canaveral Port Authority and the Indian River Lagoon Estuary Program are studying a possible project to open SR 528, close to the Port, for flushing to assist with lagoon cleanup. That being said, to me it is an effect of the increased nitrogen, we still need to find the exact cause and fix the causes. Studies indicate a very direct correlation to human waste as research by Dr. Brian LaPointes (Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute at Florida Atlantic University) points to evidence of sewage-driven eutrophication and harmful algal blooms in Florida’s Indian River Lagoon. We have our very own Dr. Duane DeFreese (Director of the Indian River Lagoon Council and fellow waterman/surfer) working in conjunction with Florida Tech and others to solve this problem. The cost to cure all of the

The Deck is OPEN!
Nearly two years in the making, the deck at Squid Lips Cocoa Beach is officially open. What a glorious location to watch the sun set over the Banana River or enjoy an afternoon tropical libation while the dolphins dance just feet away from you. Interview with Buz Underill, owner of Squid Lips
It’s been a long road in getting the deck opened back up! When was the official date that it opened back up? February 16, 2018 How many people does the new deck seat? Not enough! Life safety approved for 265 plus seating on the beach of another 14. We came and enjoyed a great lunch on the deck, it felt like we were transported away to a tropical paradise. With that being said, do you have any specialty tropical drinks to help with that transportation? Bad Little Monkey, Squids “Original” Rum Runner and the Longboard Tea are a few of our favorites. How many beers do you have on tap? We currently have 20 beers on tap and many more in bottles. A beer for every taste. For anyone that hasn’t been to Squid Lips before, or for those us that order the same food every time we come…What do you
consider your house specialties? One of our top sellers is the lobster/crab stuffed shrimp; oak grilled Cajun bacon wrapped scallops, Caribbean Coconut Baked Fish, Abaco Coconut Fish sandwich are great choices too. Really all of our oak-grilled fish selections. are great. I hear that you will start having live music there soon. When are you expecting to start that? Within the next 60 days. Is there anything else that you would like to let our readers know about? We have the best viewing for our unbelievable Cocoa Beach sunsets. Visitors can feed the fish, watch dolphins in the Banana River and stroll away the afternoon and evening on our dock. We’ve got a laid-back atmosphere that is the embodiment of the Cocoa Beach lifestyle. We live in paradise, we need to make sure we enjoy it! www.SquidLipsGrill.com

A brief history of Fishlips Martini Fest. In 2007, a couple of years after Fishlips first opened, we needed to update our beverage menus with some fresh drink recipes. Fishlips’ owners decided a good way to come up with new drinks was to hold an in-house competition for the Fishlips bartenders, with the idea that the best recipes would become part of the cocktail and martini menu. Each bartender was asked to submit two recipes, and an evening was set aside for the owners and management to taste the recipes (possibly an excuse to get together and enjoy some drinks?). After much deliberation and tasting, a list of 24 recipes was narrowed to 8 recipes that would be added to the new menu. In order to generate excitement and promote the new recipes, it was decided that a competition would be extended to the guests. The idea was to invite the public, who (for a nominal fee) would be able to sample the new drinks and then vote for their favorite. The grand prize the first year was two tick-
ets to Disney World, along with some smaller cash prizes. Though small the first year, the event generated quite a bit of excitement and became annual. Martini Fest has grown and produced many great drinks that have become staples of the Fishlips menu, like Kitt Padgett’s Mango Tango which has remained on the menu for many years, along with a few recipes like the Meat and Potatoes martini (bartender’s name withheld to protect the guilty) which may be one of the worst martinis ever. (Fortunately, it never made the menu!) Fishlips invites all those who would like to try this year’s eight finalists’ creations to come to Martini Fest - Saturday, April 21st from 1pm to 3:30pm. Enjoy the new recipes (all of which will be on the 2018 menu) along with samples of new products from some of our fabulous vendors. The team spends one day in the Spring at an intensive leadership camp that includes both classroom and physical activities, along with a second event of leadership enrichment in the Fall of the new school year. The teams also participate in projects at their home schools. Some of the projects our teams have worked on include: 1. Creating a public service announcement on sportsmanship to be read at all CCC Athletic events 2. Packing food for the hungry in Africa 3. Reading to local elementary school children 4. School safety has become a focus of schools and communities across the United States and the world with the continual news of actions involving school shootings and other acts of violence. Everyone from school personnel to students to parents to community members are on edge which seems to be the “new normal.” The directive to those who work in the school is simple: Keep our kids safe! But it’s safety for more than just students. I feel it’s my job to make sure that all students get back to their families at the end of the day as well as all teachers. And all staff. And, me for that matter. We are having conversations around school safety every day in some way, shape or form. Every time a student leaves the area they’re supposed to be, it’s a safety issue. Every time a student gets into a conflict with another stu-

Each year Cocoa Beach Jr/Sr High School selects two Sophomores to join the school’s current Student Athlete Leadership Team of two Juniors. These student/athletes are nominated by our school’s teachers and coaches and selected by a committee. The student/athletes must possess the following characteristics: 1. Have an un-weighted grade point average of 2.5 or higher 2. Are members of a school sponsored athletic team 3. Are members of organizations – school, community or religious 4. Are already perceived as positive leaders and mentors by their peers.
dent, it’s a safety issue. Every time a student doesn’t respond to a teacher’s request, it’s a safety issue. We are taking the opportunity to have serious conversations with students every time we see a violation of school rules. It’s different today though, then it used to be. When I went to school, we didn’t have to worry about someone encroaching the building who shouldn’t be there. We didn’t have to worry about violence on our campus. We actually had to worry about our parents’ reaction when we did something wrong. Today, everyone worries about keeping people off campus who shouldn’t be there. We all worry about the support we may or may not get from parents these days. Safety is at the top of our minds. March 2-3, the Wrestling team competed at the FHSAA State Wrestling Championships in Kissimmee. The team place 12th overall in the team standings out of 125 competing schools in Class 1A. This is a tremendous accomplishment for the Wrestling team and their highest State placing in 15 years. State qualifiers Ryan Pletcher, Michael Watson, and Cole Mitchell all contributed toward the points total and at the end of the tournament Cocoa Beach brought home two medals. Michael Watson finished 5th in the state at the 120 pound weight class becoming the first Cocoa Beach wrestler in history to bring home a state medal as a freshman. Cole Mitchell made it to the State finals, finishing as a State Runner-up at the 182 pound weight class. Cole was Cocoa Beach’s first State finalist since Nic Watson achieved this feat 8 years ago. The FHSAA Academic Team Champion standings came out on March 6th. The Cocoa Beach Wrestling team finished as Academic State Runner-up in Class 1A with a 3.618 cumulative team

sures across the district. In addition, schools have been tasked to form safety committees in order to review and revise school safety plans to levels never seen before. Cocoa Beach JSHS has been fortunate in that the Cocoa Beach Police Department and Cocoa Beach Fire Department are part of our safety committee. The safety committee meets on a monthly basis and covers required aspects of the safety plan. One of the most important things we can control is access to our buildings. This is why all doors of the school are locked and the only daytime entrance to the school is the main entrance up front. Our task then becomes making sure students don’t open doors for people or prop them open in some way. Lastly, we ask EVERYONE – students, parents, teachers, staff, and community members to let us know information that is important for us to remain safe. IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING. . . . This is an outstanding accomplishment for our Wrestling team, considering we are a public school competing with many other private schools who have the ability to hand-pick their students. Our team GPA would have made us Academic State Champions in any other class except 1A this year. This academic accomplishment along with the top 12 finish in the State tournament last weekend has made for a very successful season for the Wrestling team. We are extremely proud of this year’s Wrestling team.

The countdown has begun for the second annual Cocoa Beach Uncorked (April 28-29), an exciting two-day celebration of food, wine and craft beer on the sandy shores of Cocoa Beach. The festival will once again take place at Alan Shepard Park. A celebration of Central Florida’s most renowned chefs, restaurants, and breweries, Cocoa Beach Uncorked is a culinary showcase served with stellar Atlantic Ocean views.
