I feel like 2021 has started as crazy as 2020 finished. Hopefully, things calm down and get back to something that resembles “normal.” Boom, just like that we blinked, and February is upon us! February is a busy month. We have Super Bowl Sunday on February 7th, a week later we have Valentine’s Day, and then on February 15th we celebrate President’s Day.

CLUB ZION COMMUNITY CHURCH It’s All About Jesus! 830 S Atlantic Ave., Cocoa Beach (321) 799-4340 | www.CZChurch.org Sunday 9:30am • Tuesday 7:00pm Club Zion

Remember, if you are planning on taking advantage of any of the events in February, please shop local. Go out to a local bar or restaurant to watch the Super Bowl, or order some take out to enjoy it at home. If you are taking care of a special Valentine this year, make sure to shop and dine local. If you are getting the day off for President’s Day maybe use it as excuse to try a new restaurant or store. This last year has been tough on all of us, but it has been particularly hard on small businesses. Let’s pull together and shop local whenever you can!

READER’S CO RN E R Greetings Cocoa Beach Residents: Well, we are off to a busy 2021! So much promise ahead with a new year and so many exciting possibilities. The reads for this month are reflective, a quick literary masterpiece to whisk you away, an intense but quirky love story, and a historical fiction piece about the Space Age.

CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Christiana C. Succar, Ph.D.

Outline by Rachel Cusk. This short, poignant literary novel follows the novelist to Greece to teach a week-long creative writing course. As the course commences, the narrator is engrossed in her students’ narrative experiences. The remarkable prose and detail to language captivate the reader and pulls them into the fold of the students’ everyday lives through their course on creative storytelling. Me Before You by Jo Jo Moyes. Meet Lou and Will. These unlikely characters’ lives intersect when tragic circumstances change their lives. Lou has an ordinary life, and Will is an Ex-Master of the Universe. When their lives are thrown together, they learn how to love. This page-turner will keep you not only engaged but holding your breath to the end. V2 by Robert Harris. This historical fiction traces the beginning of the Space Age through the fictional narrator Dr. Graf. He befriends Wernher von Braun, a German aeronautical engineer and later a pioneer of rocketry and space technology in the United States. As Dr. Graf is launching rockets at the end of World War II bombing England, a young female Kay Caton-Walsh joins the WAAF to track the rocket launch sites. As tensions rise toward the end of the war, these two find themselves wondering who they can trust, what atrocities are going on, and what will become of their lives. A Valentine’s day recommendation: Tiny Love Stories: True Tales of Love in 100 Words or Less by Miya Lee and Daniel Jones. This gem will fill your heart with love, remembrance, and respect for those who love you and those you love! Happy Valentine’s Day!

As promised, if you’re up for the Reading Challenge, here is a link to the Reading Guide for 2021 https://bit.ly/3p9zq8b. Next month, in addition to the reviews, I will provide some titles to fill up your reading life! Happy Reading, Christiana C. Succar, Ph.D. 6 | C ANAVER AL E X PLORER .C OM

Pre-Retirees: Plan Now for Health Care Costs This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. Edward Jones, Member SIPC

If you’re close to retirement, you’ll have several financial issues to consider. But you’ll want to pay attention to one of the most important of these issues: health care costs. How can you prepare yourself for these expenses? First, get an early start on estimating health care costs. More than two-thirds of those planning to retire in the next 10 years say they have no idea what their health and long-term care costs will be in retirement, according to the Edward Jones/Age Wave Four Pillars of the New Retirement study. And some people don’t worry much about these costs, which may be considerable, thinking that Medicare will pay for most of them. While Medicare does cover many medical expenses, it also has its own costs. You probably won’t pay a premium for Part A (inpatient/ hospital coverage), since you likely had this cost deducted from your paycheck when you were working. But if you are hospitalized, you’ll have to pay deductibles and coinsurance (the percentage of costs you pay after you’ve paid your deductible). Part B (doctor’s visits) requires a premium, deducted from your Social Security checks, and you must pay an out-of-pocket

deductible. After you meet this deductible for the year, you typically pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for most doctor’s services. And when you enroll in Part D (prescription drug plan), you will likely also have to pay a monthly premium, an annual deductible and coinsurance or copays. To help pay for the Medicare deductible, coinsurance and copayments, you may want to get supplemental insurance, known as Medigap. Premiums for Medigap vary, depending on the plan you choose. As an alternative to original Medicare, you could select Medicare Advantage (sometimes called Part C). Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private companies approved by Medicare, but the benefits and costs vary by plan. These plans generally will incorporate Medicare Parts A and B and will provide medical AR TW Oadditional R K P R OO F coverage, such as prescription drugs. When you incorporate all the above, the annual out-of-pocket costs for traditional medical expenses likely will be about $4,500 to $6,500 per PROOF DISCLAIMER: year, percheck person – over not carefully. insignificant, Please proof Upon proof approval, Explorer Multimedia is not responsible for any error in spelling, content, composition and/or format. but certainly a number that can be addressed by careful planning. But there’s one more expense to keep in mind: long-term care. The average cost of a private room in a nursing home is more than $100,000 per year, according to the insurance company Genworth. And Medicare typically pays few of these expenses. Clearly, between regular medical costs associated with Medicare or those not covered by it, and costs resulting from the possible need for long-term care, your health care bills can mount. To meet these costs, you need to plan ahead – and take action.

For example, it’s essential that you incorporate health care expenses into your overall financial strategy. You can also work with a financial professional to run some “what-if” analyses to see if your strategy would be derailed by a potential long-term care stay. And the professional you work with may be able to suggest specific protection vehicles that can help you meet the costs of long-term care. The best time to prepare for your health care costs during retirement is well before you retire. So, if you haven’t already started, now is the time to do so. When it comes to paying for health care, the fewer surprises, the better.

Adopt-A-Mangrove Program CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Zachary Eichholz Sustainability Program Manager + Resilience Planner City of Cape Canaveral

The City of Cape Canaveral has established the Adopt-A-Mangrove Program to provide interested property owners with the opportunity to “adopt” Mangroves. This is a voluntary program that will assist with the planting and care of these important plants, which serve a critical role in the health and well-being of the Indian and Banana River Lagoon systems. Rules and guidelines must be met and followed by interested Mangrove “Adopters” who wish to partake in this volunteer community outreach initiative before planting on one’s property can begin. These guidelines are meant to ensure resident safety, City Code and state compliance and local environmental wellbeing. Not meeting any one of the following can result in the refusal of participation by City Staff. Please read the Adopt-A-Mangrove Program Guide for further information: cityofcapecanaveral.org/ MangroveProgram

Only those with properties that directly border the lagoon or a waterway connected to the lagoon are eligible for this program. Registration ends Friday, March 26. City of Cape Canaveral Adopt-A-Mangrove Packet Mangroves are a critical aspect of Florida’s marine ecosystems. Sometimes called the “kidneys of the coast,” Mangroves filter water they are situated in and can maintain water quality that helps coral reefs and near shore seagrasses grow. Due to their dense root structures, Mangroves also help to stabilize coastlines by reducing shoreline erosion, decreasing incoming wave energy, minimizing storm surge heights and potentially providing

COCOA BEACH STUDENTS CARE ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Mark J. Rendell Principal of Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School

Last month I promised to share more stories about the incredible students we have at Cocoa Beach Junior Senior High School. I am proud to announce a new partnership our students have formed with the Surfrider Foundation. It started when over 50 students from Cocoa Beach Jr/ Sr High School volunteered their time at a local beach cleanup on December 12th at Lori Wilson Park. The Surfrider Foundation was sponsoring the event. With students looking for opportunities to gather community service hours for scholarships, and with the Surfrider Foundation in need of volunteers, it was a perfect match. The students are now on board to help the foundation with its beach cleanups and other events such as Sea Oat planting and water sampling activities. One of the missions of the Surfrider Foundation is to raise awareness about the problem of marine litter and to ensure that our ocean ecosystems are protected. Ryan Dadds of the Surfrider Foundation said, “We’re excited to have the younger generation interested in learning about how we can protect our beaches.” It is great to see that our students are spending their personal time giving back to our community. It is even more exciting to know that they are working to preserve our environment at the same time. This is another example to show that the future is in good hands.

LUXURY HOMES TESTIMONIAL

"We are so glad we chose Barbara as our realtor! She is professional and personable, and she is very easy to work with. Barbara gets the job done! Everyone on Barbara’s team is an excellent communicator. We got feedback after each showing of our property, in addition to weekly updates. Barbara answered our texts and emails promptly, even on weekends. An excellent
