EDITOR’S LETTER

† † †

Normally, we march into January with wide-eyed optimism. Usually, a new year means new goals and a few new resolutions. I cannot help but feel that 2021 is a bit different. I feel people are looking forward to 2020 being over more than 2021 starting.

I saw a cartoon online that said, “I’m staying up this year on New Year’s Eve till midnight. Not because I want to see 2021 come in, but because I want to make sure 2020 actually leaves!” I think we all have this feeling for New Year’s Eve 2020. So, let us all say, “Goodbye” to 2020 and let’s welcome 2021.

Dr. Lance Armstrong, DC Palmer College Professor US Air Force B-52 Veteran

(321) 783-4455

Greetings Cocoa Beach Residents: Happy New Year! To start the new year off right this month, I suggest a fast-paced novel that will keep you intrigued, a dark coming of age story that emphasizes trust and the importance of family and friends, and a bright memoir that draws one back to innocence and the impact of the space race.

TREATING MAJOR INJURIES from auto accident to work related

Global Patient Base CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Christiana C. Succar, Ph.D.

The Last Flight by Julie Clark. This wellwritten page-turner will keep you not only engaged but holding your breath to the end. Two women cross paths at an airport and decide to escape their lives by switching identities. As the characters’ stories unfold, the reader is taken on an emotional roller coaster through their lives. Clark’s concise but descriptive prose pulls the reader into a plot of love, deceit, and unsuspecting friendships. The Way Home by George Pelecanos. Christopher Flynn is a rebellious, spoiled, self-centered know it all adolescent. When his father can no longer fix his son’s troubling behaviors and later criminal actions, they must rely on themselves to find their way. However, sometimes through the power of love, loyalty, and maturity, we learn to look through the lens of others’ lives before we can look through our own.

Space: A Memoir by Jesse Lee Kercheval. This favorite is the story of growing up in Cocoa, Florida, as space exploration is just taking off down the road at the Kennedy Space Center. The author brings the era alive through her sense of innocence about her teenage experiences and her parents’ trials and tribulations, all while waiting on the moon shot! Finally, add to your New Year’s resolutions to join our 2021 Reading Challenge and expand your reading genre. Start with creating a planning guide with a list of authors you want to read more of, authors of translated works, and authors who published their first book in 2020. Next month, stay tuned for my planning guide list and added reading challenges to broaden your reading habits Happy Reading, Christiana C. Succar, Ph.D. 6 | C ANAVER AL E X PLORER .C OM

MAYOR’S MESSAGE

CAPE CANAVERAL UPDATE FROM MAYOR HOOG

City of Cape Canaveral Residents:

CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Mayor Robert E. Hoog

As we rejoice that 2020 has finally come to an end, we are reminded that the COVID-19 pandemic endures. 2021 brings an increasingly urgent and fresh hope that the global health crisis will come to an end. We remind residents and visitors to stay vigilant; as we are in what may be the worst part of it now, but the vaccination process is on the horizon. As false (and arguably dangerous) information about COVID-19 vaccines begin to proliferate through our phones, feeds and screens - please ensure you rely on dependable, official sources such as: • Department of Defense Operation Warp Speed: www.defense.gov/Explore/Spotlight/Coronavirus/Operation-Warp-Speed/ • Center for Disease Control: www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/index.html • Florida Department of Health: www.floridahealth.gov/programs-and-services/immunization/index.html This edition contains an important, up-to-date article on the vaccination process and expectations. The City will continue to provide updates about the ongoing efforts to distribute a COVID-19 vaccine as more developments occur. Updates can be found on our social media feeds or on our website: cityofcapecanaveral.org/coronavirus/ A warm welcome back to our snowbird residents and I hope to see you around town soon! A few last things to note: community events will hopefully be returning as soon as possible, please use the recreation facilities as much as possible and support our local small businesses in this trying times. Best wishes for a healthy and happy beginning to the New Year!

2021: Hope Finally Arrives COVID-19 Vaccinations Begin

CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Zachary Eichholz, Sustainability Program Manager + Resilience Planner, City of Cape Canaveral

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to ravage the US and the globe, a massive multinational effort spanning both the private and public sectors is underway to quickly and safely develop viable vaccines. According to the US Centers Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a vaccine stimulates your body’s immune system to produce antibodies, exactly like it would if you were exposed to a disease. After getting vaccinated, you develop immunity to that specific disease, without having to get the disease first. This is what makes vaccines such a powerful medical tool. Unlike most medicines, which treat or cure diseases, vaccines prevent them. Much of the world’s population has seen an enormous decline in what were once common, sometimes life threatening ailments thanks in part to vaccinations. The CDC considers vaccines to be one the greatest public health achievements in modern history, with the number of people who experience the devastating effects of preventable infectious diseases like measles, diphtheria, and whooping cough at an all-time low. Some diseases

such as smallpox have even been eradicated after large scale global vaccination programs. In December, US-based pharmaceutical company Moderna applied to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for emergency use authorization of its COVID-19 vaccine. In November, US-based company Pfizer and Germany-based company BioNTech submitted for emergency use authorization for their own jointly produced COVID-19 vaccine as well. Other companies are not far behind, including Astrazeneca and Johnson & Johnson. Today, both Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech vaccines are being deployed and disseminated to the most vulnerable across the country. By the time you are reading this there have undoubtedly been hundreds of thousands inoculated around the world already, if not more. However, it is important to note that for now not everyone who wants a COVID-19 vaccine will be able to get one. The state of Florida has prioritized the residents of long term care facilities, frontline healthcare workers, and those 65+ years

Brad A. Bernkrant, ChFC

®

of age and/or with significant comorbidities. In order to be prepared for vaccine distribution, the governor’s office announced that the state has procured 5 million needles, 5 million syringes and 5 million alcohol swabs in anticipation for the first groups of people to be vaccinated. The state has also identified locations

refrigeration requirements and can be stored within normal medical refrigerators, allowing it to be more accessible. Both vaccines require two shots separated by about two weeks in order to be as effective as possible. The City of Cape Canaveral will continue to provide updates about the ongoing efforts to distribute

with the necessary refrigeration infrastructure to properly store COVID-19 vaccines, specifically Pfizers, which requires refrigeration temperatures of -94°F (-70°C) to remain viable. Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine does not have special

a COVID-19 vaccine as more developments occur. For more factual information about COVID-19 vaccines please visit the CDC’s website: www.cdc.gov/vaccines/ covid-19/index.html

a NEW YEAR

& FRESH BEGINNINGS

2020 is finally in the rearview mirror! Hopefully the ushering in of a new year will also bring with it fresh new experiences, new positive outlooks and new opportunities for everyone. A few of our advertisers feel the same and have shared their thoughts on what they learned from 2020, and what they look toward in 2021.

COULD THIS BE YOUR YEAR? CONTRIBUTED BY: Barbara Schluraff, CENTURY 21 Ocean and CENTURY 21®

“Should I buy or sell a home this year?” Well...” it depends.” Here’s what we mean... It depends on your needs: For many, their needs have changed this past year. Need some space? Whether it’s because the kids are out of school or you and your roommates are spending every waking moment at home, there comes a time when there’s no substitute for additional square feet. Is a home office now a ‘must’? Have you found yourself (and maybe your significant other) all of a sudden working from home? Setting up and breaking down your ironing-board standing desk every day isn’t going to cut it forever.

It depends on your credit score: Some lenders are exercising a little more caution when it comes to assuming risk, so potential buyers should prepare for higher credit score standards. If you’ve been displaying a string of good habits in preparation for buying a home, this might be your year. It depends on your savings: Maybe you’ve been packing your piggy bank for years in anticipation of buying a home, or you’re planning on selling your starter home and putting the cash toward a more family-friendly home. Either way, if you can come to the table with 20% down, you’ll have a tremendous edge this year.

It depends on your income: If you’ve been fortunate enough to maintain a reliable source of income, you can feel more comfortable pursuing a purchase. It depends on your market: As a result of intense demand and low inventory in Brevard County, list prices have continued to climb upwards. For example, in December of 2020, Months Supply of Inventory is down to its lowest number in years. Low inventory gives sellers an advantage as far more buyers are looking for a home than listings available, which can help a seller get the most competitive price for the home or condo.

If you’re curious about how the Brevard County market has shifted, give our team a call. When you’re ready to sell your home, have a team who knows the market on your side. With the know-how and experience to reach your

real estate goals, we can help you make the best financial decision about your property. Better knowledge leads to a better experience -Seek Out Remarkable with CENTURY 21 Ocean.

CHAMPAGNE FOR THE FEET CONTRIBUTED BY: Tessa Mock & Ray Borges, Garra Fish Spa Experience

After a few tough months of lockdown, my family and I knew it was time to see something other than the inside walls of our house. We grabbed our masks, our hand sanitizers and headed to a Garra Fish Spa. Why a fish spa? We needed something different, something that didn’t scream pandemic, lockdown, or COVID; and we found it. As soon as we put our feet in the water and the 10 | C AN AVER AL E X PLORER .C OM

fish started to swim around, we knew we had found what we were looking for. It felt like putting our feet in champagne. It was a small celebration and a breath of fresh air after four months of lockdown. Four months of working and studying from home. Four months of getting our groceries delivered. In late November, five months after our first Fish Spa Experience, we opened our own Garra Fish Spa

in Cocoa Beach. We wanted our neighbors and tourists alike to have the same experience we had, to feel what we felt. It rejuvenated us, gave us strength to continue on with an already difficult year and gave us a FRESH BEGINNING. Garra Fish Spa 5675 N Atlantic Ave, Suite 118 Cocoa Beach FL 32931 321-613-5549

BREATHE EASY IN 2021 CONTRIBUTED BY: Mark Gellner, Stanley Steemer

HAPPINESS AND HEALTHY BEHAVIOR IN THE NEW YEAR CONTRIBUTED BY: Dr. Lance Armstrong, Armstrong Chiropractic

Rebuilding our bodies at this time of year is nothing new to us. Diets include everything from extra meat no carb to plant-based vegan and even fasting. Lifting weights, joining a gym, buying neon workout clothes in order to be seen in the dark and hanging upside down are just a few of the New Year trends we see every year. Let’s face it, 2020 was a very tough year, and we all can’t wait to say good bye to CoVID-19. New positive thinking is an aspect of life hard to beat. I treat a wonderful young lady in her eighties facing advanced degenerative changes in most of her body. She has moderate level pain almost daily, but talking with her you would never know it— “Look how great the day is out there today” and “What a wonderful time I had last night eating dinner with my daughter.” Find your triggers of stress and avoid them if possible. This may include family members with opposite political views. Day calendars are great with positive affirmation statements for each day. Remember the glass may be half empty, but you have a glass with water in it. Remember how fortunate we were here this past hurricane season. There remain thousands of blue tarp roofs on the Gulf Coast with no materials available. Remember our troops overseas during this time of year as well. Physical new beginnings can be a spectrum of procedures. Start back into physical activity respecting your body not abusing it for quick gains. Everything we learned in 5th grade PE is still good for us today. If you have not worked out in a few years— be careful. Pulled back muscles, strained tendons and even compression fractures have been treated by me at this time of year. Falls from ladders and roofs while removing lights, lifting trees out of your house and “some assembly required” can all lead patients to our clinic and the ER. Make it a pledge that your 2021 new beginnings lead to happiness and healthy behavior. If injured, call us and have it examined and x-rayed. Your “bones on your phone” make for great stories. Armstrong Chiropractic 1401 N Atlantic Ave, Cocoa Beach, FL 32931 321-783-4455

With the start of every new year, we always think of the things we want to change, make better or improve in our lives. This year will be no different with strives to make positive change in 2021. 2020 was a year that turned our lives into a roller coaster: quarantines, masks, in home schooling and the disappearance of toilet paper. Through the years and especially throughout the year of 2020 your local Stanley Steemer has stayed strong. With the ever-changing economy and the fear of the unknown, we modified our services to accommodate the new social dilemmas of a pandemic society. We added disinfectant to all of our cleaning solutions to help make your home more sanitized. We added to our services by fogging and disinfecting homes and businesses who were effected by COVID19 directly, so families and employees could get back home and also back to work in a safe clean environment. We all need to go into 2021 with a clean mind and a vision of fresh beginnings. One of the things many people don’t think about is their indoor air quality. Given the amount of time we spend in our homes, we should really focus on the quality of the air we breathe. Stanley Steemer offers air duct cleaning services. We clean your entire duct lines freeing them of dust

(

and allergens, and we clean your air handling unit which improves efficiency, and then sanitize those lines to kill any bacteria and germs. We recommend installing a UV light system which helps to purify your air, kill active mold and mildew spores that may try and circulate through your system and provide you with clean healthy air to breath each day.

Your local Stanley Steemer is a family-owned and operated business that has operated locally for almost 40 years. We started our business with one van and three people, and over the course of our years, we’ve grown to over six operations spanning across six states and employ over 250 people. We pride ourselves on family, and that’s why it is important we keep up with the demand of the changing times in order keep our employees, their families, and our customers safe, clean, happy, and healthy. A FRESH, NEW LOCATION FOR THE NEW YEAR CONTRIBUTED BY: Kenne Wells, Coastal Market

Coastal Market downtown Cocoa Beach

Like many other small businesses in Cocoa Beach, 2020 was a struggle, but out of struggle comes perseverance and out of perseverance comes achievement. 2020 taught me that happiness and success must be built with the power of positive thinking! Like Jimmy Dean once said, “I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.” And adjusting

the sails is exactly what we did. In late fall of 2020, we opened a beautiful, newly renovated location just a couple of doors down from our previous location. Oh, we didn’t change the good stuff… we still have all the favorites: fresh fruits and veggies, farm-fresh eggs, fresh meat market, baked goodies, salads (YES, THE SALAD BAR IS BACK OPEN), deli sandwiches and soups. One thing we did add is a great new inside dining area. 2020 made us very thankful for our loyal customers, and we

look forward to serving our Cocoa Beach neighbors for many years to come. So, 2021 is a fresh new beginning for us at Coastal Market. We are moving into 2021 with a fresh, new location to go right along with our daily fresh meals, soups and bakery items. Coastal Market 35 N. Cocoa Beach Students Are Leading The Way! CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Mark J. Rendell, Principal of Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School

I am often asked about our young people; whether they are different, than previous generations. Are these kids lazy? Do they lack work ethic and responsibility? People seem to be worried about the future of our country and our place in the world. Well, I always respond with glowing remarks about the young people I work with and tell them that the future is in good hands. Let me tell you about one group of our students as an illustration. We have an Army Junior ROTC program here at Cocoa Beach Junior-Senior high school. It is not a military recruiting, tool or armed services preparation course. It is a very popular elective course – 1 in 4 of our students take at least one JROTC class – that is focused on critical thinking skills, teamwork, and the principles of good citizenship. In fact, the listed purpose of the program is to “motivate young people to be better citizens.” While the students do wear uniforms on occasion, and

learn how to salute and march, the class consists of many more enriching activities. They engage in activities designed to build their own selfconfidence as they work together as a team. They also study current events and how organizations work and the importance of clear channels of communication. Outside of school hours, these students are asked to give back to our community. They provide Color Guard details for local events and contribute numerous hours volunteering at beach cleanups and other service activities. For example, they recently helped clean up and renovate the local VFW Hall. As part of the program, there are also clubs and activities the students can participate in such as a the Color Guard and Drill Team, Academic Competition team, Rifle Marksmanship team, and the Raiders teams. The Raiders competition consists of a variety of physical fitness events, some individual and some in small teams. I am

proud to report that both our Male Raiders team and our Female Raiders teams captured District Championships again this year! Winning these titles proves that the students are learning these lessons of individual selfconfidence and the ability to work together as a team. So again, when I am asked about “kids today” and the future, I respond with great confidence that the kids are as good as ever and we will be just fine. Our young people are motivated, work hard and care. The Junior ROTC program is just one example. Next month I will share how another group of our students are working with the Surfrider Foundation to preserve and protect our natural resources.

*The CENTURY 21 Survey was conducted by Wakefield Research (www.wakefieldresearch.com) among 500 U.S. home buyers and 500 U.S. home sellers between February 23 and February 28, 2018 using an email invitation and an online survey. Home buyers were defined as those who have bought a home in the past 24 months, and home sellers were defined as those who have sold a home in the past 24 months. ** Study Source: 2017 Ad Tracking Study. The survey results are based on 1,200 online interviews with a national random sample of adults (ages 18+) who are equal decision makers in real estate transactions and active in the real estate market (bought or sold a home within the past two years or, plan to purchase or sell a home within the next two years). Brand awareness question based on a sample of 1,200 respondents. Results are significant at a 90% confidence level, with a margin of error of +/-2.4%. Recognition question based on consumers aware of brand in question. The study was conducted by Millward Brown, a leading global market research organization, from April 12-26, 2017.
