April 17 & 18, our area plays host to the Cocoa Beach Air Show. After nine years, it is exciting to have the air show back on our beaches to kick off the Thunderbirds’ 2021 season. Yes, I am biased, but our beaches are the best beaches! We were lucky enough to touch base with Bryan Lilley, the organizer of the Cocoa Beach Air Show, to get some of the details on this year’s event to share with our readers.

Greetings Cocoa Beach Residents: Well, spring is upon us! So wonderful to hear the birds chirping and the flowers blooming. This month’s reads are pretty diverse and not my usual curl up on the coach books. My three recommendations this month are a modern-day horror story, a heartfelt memoir where nature, science, and human emotions come together, and a return to the moon by some old favorites.

DANCE FOR THOSE WHO BY: O L IVIA RO MANO Although February 20, 2021, was a chilly day in Brevard County, students from Cocoa Beach High School warmed the hearts of many, hosting their Second Annual Dance Marathon benefiting Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. Dance Marathon is a movement for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and happens to be the only foundation that ensures 100% of funds are dispersed locally in support of local kids to provide them with crucial medical care. Additionally, the organization is entirely student run, proving meaningful leadership and teamwork experience to the student body.
CONTRIBUTING WRITER: MARK J. RENDELL PRINCIPAL COCOA BEACH JR./SR. HIGH SCHOOL
I want to share another example of the selflessness of the student body at Cocoa Beach Junior-Senior High School. Our school recently held a “Dance Marathon” event to raise funds for an area hospital. This is a description of the event as told by Olivia Romano, a Senior at Cocoa Beach.
Cocoa Beach began participating in Dance Marathon in 2019, hosting their first culmination event in February 2020, raising approximately $7,100 for Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. Inspired by the lifesaving treatment that the students were able to provide for those fighting pediatric illness, the Cocoa Beach National Junior Honor Society and several upperclassmen representatives immediately got to work at the beginning of the 2020-21 school year to plan their second Dance Marathon. This year we had a bold goal of raising $10,000 by the end of the event, and despite our small school size, we were determined to reach it. Our students went around the county looking for businesses to sponsor the event, discovering 18 generous businesses willing to donate. Each Dance Marathon participant also set up a donor drive account to raise funds. Aside from fundraising, the Dance Marathon team had to plan the event. A full executive board of students was created, with positions ranging from Dancer Relations all the way to Finance. These students met once a week to ensure the event would go seamlessly. The executive board worked together to design T-shirts, create business sponsor forms, choreograph a dance, and raise awareness around the school and community. The Dance Marathon team chose games and entertainment that met CDC guidelines. The activities were also approved by the Infectious Disease Unit at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. After months of planning, on February 20th, Dance Marathon took place. With a busy schedule timed down to the minute, the event began at 4:00 PM outdoors in the commons at CBHS with masks required at all times. Attendees were encouraged to remain standing for the entirety of the event as a sign of respect to the children fighting pediatric illness that are confined to their hospital beds. At the top of every hour, the designated Dance Team taught a line dance to get people hyped up for the hour ahead. Additionally, students watched several Mission Moments, stories from children and parents that received treatment from Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, creating a better understanding of purpose behind Dance Marathon. Jeannie and Jared, dance teachers from MyHipHopFit taught two energetic and powerful dance classes

throughout the event. Students also played games, had a lip sync battle, and finished the night off with a socially distanced “rave.” When the event ended at 10:00 PM, awards were given to top fundraisers including Rhys Gallant and Julia Dillon. In total, Cocoa Beach High School fundraised an unbelievable $12,412.47 to save local children’s lives, well surpassing their original goal. Dance Marathon is an absolutely incredible process creating a movement based entirely on the idea of kids saving other kids lives. The Dance Marathon team at Cocoa Beach High School is proud to dance for those who can’t, changing the lives of children who need it most. CBHS, NJHS, and the upperclassmen representatives would like to give a special thank you to all of their business sponsors*, Nothing Bundt Cakes, and each and every individual who made Dance Marathon possible this year, allowing miracles to be made for the kids, and guaranteeing no child fights pediatric illness alone.

CITY OF CAPE CANAVERAL MARKS 31 YEARS OF
“TREE CITY” DE SIGNATION
Recently the City of Cape Canaveral received a letter from the Arbor Day Foundation congratulating the City for continuing its designation as a Tree City. Currently, Cape Canaveral is one of only 3,600 communities nationwide to have this honor. The City has proudly held this designation since 1989. Founded in 1972, the Arbor Day Foundation is the largest 501(c)3 nonprofit membership organization dedicated to planting trees and other reforestation efforts. The foundation has more than 1 million partners and supporters that together have helped to plant more than 350 million trees in neighborhoods, communities, cities, and forests throughout not only the US but the world.
CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Zachary Eichholz Sustainability Program Manager + Resilience Planner City of Cape Canaveral
To qualify for the Tree City status, communities must meet four core standards. First, someone must be responsible for the care of all trees, this usually includes a professional forester or arborist (the City currently has an on-staff arborist); second, a Tree City must be guided by a tree care ordinance (Article II. - Tree Protection); next, a community must designate a portion of its budget toward planting, care and removal of City trees (Sec. 102-54. - Tree replacement standards); and last, a
community must recite an official Arbor Day proclamation and demonstrate support for Arbor Day. The City takes green infrastructure and its urban canopy very seriously, for trees (and plants) can provide numerous environmental, economic, and social benefits. Such benefits include reducing stormwater runoff to the lagoon, improving air quality, lowering local temperatures, and sequestering carbon dioxide emissions. Recent examples of large-scale tree plantings in the City include the planting of over 350 new native trees at the Long Point Estuary property in 2019, 18 red mangroves along the City’s lagoon shoreline through its Adopt-A-Mangrove Program in 2020, and in 2021 at Canaveral City Park the City will be planting thousands of new native and Florida friendly trees and plants at the site for the MultiGenerational Facility; increasing the park’s species diversity and overall canopy and ground coverage. The City will apprise residents of new plantings, best management practices and make available educational resources via our partner organizations as often as possible.

COCOA BEACH AIR SHOW BACK TO THE BEACH
APRIL 17-18 The Cocoa Beach Air Show will take place along roughly two miles of Cocoa Beach oceanfront, extending from Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier to Minutemen Causeway with Lori Wilson Park serving as show center.
PRESENTED BY
The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds fly the F-16 Fighting Falcon and perform a combination of formation and solo maneuvers in an inspiring, patriotic, high energy demonstration. The four-jet diamond performs precision formation flight with the aircraft wingtips as close as four feet apart while performing loops, inverted rolls and even high-performance turns! The two solo jets perform high energy maneuvers together and from opposite directions closing in on each other as fast as 1,000 mph. The six jets come together in the delta formation as the finale for the show, flying difficult formations and signature breaks that fill the sky with speed, sound and smoke trails! The F-22 Raptor is the fastest and most maneuverable fighter jet in the world today. The F-22’s twin engines produce more thrust than any other fighter. Combined with its sleek aerodynamic design, this allows the F-22 to “Supercruise” at 1.5 times the speed of sound without using fuel-
“
We’re glad to be bringing the show back to the beach at a time where it can help the ailing tourism industry that has been so badly impacted in the past year. Having the double headliner of the Thunderbirds and F-22 Raptor Demo will kick the destination appeal of the Cocoa Beach Air Show into afterburner.
“
The 2021 Cocoa Beach Air Show will feature the U.S. Air Force’s top two demonstration teams when it returns to Florida’s Space Coast on April 17-18, 2021. The Air Force just announced that the F-22 Raptor Demo Team will join the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds to double headline the show. Cocoa Beach will be the kickoff of the Thunderbirds 2021 season.

consuming afterburner. The F-22’s unique thrust vectoring and advanced flight controls allow it to outmaneuver any other aircraft. The F-22 Raptor demo puts thrust vectoring on full display during its demonstration defying imagination as it climbs straight up, stops in mid-air, then reverses towards the ground before flipping the nose around in a somersault at near zero forward speed. The F-22 makes sharp, sudden turns displacing and compressing air into vapor, and you often see the Raptor creating its own weather system with massive clouds that engulf the jet. The Valiant Air Command will be adding to the air show with four different warbird aircraft. Featured warbirds include their flagship, the C-47 “Tico Bell” — one of the hundreds of C-47s that flew across the English Channel on D-Day, dropping members of the 82nd Airborne behind enemy lines — as well as a TBM Avenger torpedo bomber, North American SNJ-4 trainer, and an N2S Steerman biplane. In March, air show officials announced a B-52 Stratofortress long-range bomber has been added to the lineup. CITY EXPANDS
ECO-FRIENDLY FLEET CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Zachary Eichholz Sustainability Program Manager + Resilience Planner City of Cape Canaveral
The City of Cape Canaveral has taken delivery of its fourth hybrid vehicle within its fleet, a new Toyota RAV4, which has been assigned to Infrastructure Maintenance. This SUV gets 41 mpg in City driving conditions and will switch over to battery power while at idle or driving at slow speeds, saving both fuel and emissions. The onboard batteries are recharged via regenerative braking. Hybrid vehicles save the City thousands of dollars on fuel costs compared to equivalent all-gas vehicles over the operational life of the vehicle. The City now has a total of five vehicles
that can be considered “electrified” in that they use batteries as a means of either full or partial power and propulsion, including one all-electric Ford Focus. Over the next few months, the City will also be acquiring another all-electric vehicle, a Nissan Leaf, and another Toyota RAV4 hybrid for Code Enforcement duties, bringing the total number of electrified vehicles in the fleet to seven by the end of 2021. This represents just over 20% of the fleet.

Up (The Man in the Flying Chair) April 23rd - May 2nd Up invites us into the life of Walter Griffin, a failed inventor obsessed with Philippe Petit’s famed 1974 wire-walk between the twin World Trade Center towers. Walter’s greatest moment of glory – a flight on a lawn chair festooned with helium balloons – is now long behind him, though Walter dreams of inventing something wonderful once more. It becomes obvious to him that life itself is lived on a wire not unlike Petit’s, this one strung between happiness and sadness.

the B-52 to the show’s lineup. “The B-52 is a big, hulking, eightengine rarity with a wingspan of 185 feet. The cool thing about the B-52 is its appeal to a broad audience. The first B-52s flew back in the ‘50s, so veterans as well as the guys who like warbirds enjoy seeing them. Young people like it too — it’s big, it’s cool, and it’s loud,” he said. For 2021, the air show is implementing a series of “Stay safe initiatives” to ensure the safety of guests and spectators at the event. These initiatives extend across all the event premium viewing venues which include the Drop Zone Beach, Flight Line Club, and Sand Boxes—a viewing area designed with the at-risk, elderly, and families with small children in mind, to be able to enjoy the air show in their own reserved area of the beach. For additional information on the Stay Safe initiative please visit the Cocoa Beach Air Show website.
“
It’s a multi-camera broadcast. Just like how they cover a football game with a broadcast — we cover an air show like that.

The Cocoa Beach Air Show will be broadcast by a Marylandbased professional livestream crew, offering new aerobatic viewing options during the COVID-19 pandemic. “You’ve got a camera covering the action; you’ve got one on the jets, so you can watch what’s going on at the airfield; and you’ve got one on the narrator. People from the hotel-room balconies and people spread out across the beach can get the narration. Even if you’re not in the Cocoa Beach area, people can attend from around the world,” he said.
VIP and Premium Viewing tickets are on sale now at cocoabeachairshow.com The Cocoa Beach Air Show will kick off this year’s AirDotShow Live Tour that will visit six destinations in 2021 including Fort Lauderdale, Atlanta, Ocean City MD, New York and Orlando.
