As I write this, Wake Up Cocoa Beach, hereafter referred to as WUCB, has 6,506 members. As you read it, I am sure there will be more.

by Steve Romano (The Sheriff) Back in early October of 2012, there was a group on Facebook called “Cocoa BeachAll things political”. The 2012 election in Cocoa Beach was a very important election: there were several seats up for grabs and the vote for or against mixed-use in the downtown area. I remember somebody in the group made the statement they did not know some of the candidates running and wished they could get more information. Tim Tumulty, whom I didn’t even know at the time, posted a link to his bio and website. The admin of the group instantly warned him there was not to be any “politicking”! WHAT? Here was a site that called themselves ALL THINGS POLITICAL and here was a candidate just trying to get the word out about themselves. I thought it was crazy, so I decided to start a group called WAKE UP COCOA BEACH. I was sort of going to be the Robin Williams type character in Good morning, Vietnam; I usually get up between 4:45 and 5:15 and

back then would start off the conversation. The mission statement was simple: “uncensored news about the greatest little city in the world”. I truly believe that statement. I have been lucky enough to travel to Europe and pretty much every island and major city in this country; and when you come back over that last bridge and see the Banana River along with your little barrier island, there is a feeling which is tough to describe to someone who is not local. I have been selling real estate in Cocoa Beach for over 30 years and cannot recall one person who has bought here and not been happy. You can get up and watch the sun rise over the ocean and see it set on the river; what happens in between is up to you. Wake Up Cocoa Beach morphed from a political page to informational and breaking news — sort of our version of TMZ.

I truly believe in 2014 our members saved the Cocoa Beach Art Show. When the Space Coast Art Show and the City could not come to terms, it was decided to take the show to the Port. A small group of people stepped up to the plate and said there was going to be NO WAY the streets of downtown were going to be dark over Thanksgiving weekend. That weekend is a reunion of Cocoa Beach High School grads and has been a fixture for over 50 years. By the late summer of 2014, we were not so sure we were going to have a show; but when I asked the members to step up and help, we started receiving donations of $10, $20, $50, $100 from the residents on WUCB. Of course, we had a half-dozen very generous donations from Emma Hosmer, Jim Dale, Tom McGuire and a few others. I will never forget being at Coconuts, or other downtown establishments, and people handing me money while expressing their thankfulness that this show was going to go on. I will also never forget standing up on that stage and kicking off the show with the ocean at my back and downtown Cocoa Beach in front of me filled with artists and vendors. WUCB was a huge part in that.

es of beer, booze, water, gift certificates to local restaurants, and cash. Because of WUCB, these guys did not have to pay for their rooms or most of their meals. We were even able to send them out to NASA, and Coconuts provided a bus to take them there. On Sunday, we did a pub crawl from Pineapple Point to the Pig and Whistle, Cocoa Beach Sports Bar, Casablanca, Minutemen Tavern, Coconuts and back to the VFW. I will never forget people toasting and chanting “USA, USA, USA,” taking pictures, getting hugs, and shaking hands. I don’t ask a lot, but when I do WUCB steps up big time! We helped a little girl, Marissa, who had undergone numerous surgeries have a great Christmas. We celebrated with an Italian night at the Country Club to help raise money for a Cocoa Beach Police officer’s wife who was battling a tough disease and other locals. This little town is something special............

In January of 2015, I was contacted by the Fontecchio family who lost their son, brother, husband: Elia. Elia was killed in action while in Iraq in 2005. Jocelyn, Elia’s sister, wanted to know if I had a house that would rent to several members of Elia’s platoon whom were going to come in to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the Cocoa Beach VFW being named after Elia. We decided the best place for them was the Sea Aire Motel close to downtown, and we booked some rooms. I then went on WUCB, announced what was going on, and stated we should take care of these Marines. Again, WUCB stepped up; in no time, I had cas-

Do we fight and argue? Of course we do! We are like one large dysfunctional family, but when one of us loses a dog, a cat, a lizard, some jewelry, or our bike is missing, we all step in and help each other out. I never realized how many people lose their dogs until I started WUCB. We have great photographers, some quick-witted members, 4 out of 5 commissioners, including the city manager, and yeah, a few trolls, but that’s social media. It makes me happy when people tell me how much they enjoy the page and to keep up the good work, so that is what I am going to do. Steve Romano grew up in Cocoa Beach and is the admin of the Wake Up Cocoa Beach Facebook page.

Owner, J. Marie Sheppard, shares a bit of insight into her delightful downtown gathering spot. When did you open? February 24, 2017

What are some of the most popular items on your food menu?

TS

beer

We realized we did not have room for both, so we chose the piano. Our piano players have been wildly popular. Sometimes our patrons come in and play; I think for us, that is the best part.

That is a tough question because so much of the menu is popular. In addition, the popular items seem to change as new selections are introduced. The Ahi Seared Tuna and Lobster Mac were initial favorites and still remain top selections. The Barbeque Meatballs are also a favorite; we spend an inordinate amount of time making meatballs (yes, they are made from scratch on site). But one cannot overlook our Black and Blue Panini which outsells almost everything. When it comes to desserts, our Key Lime Pie and Chocolate Mousse were both best sellers until we introduced our newest dessert, Kouign Amman.

When is happy hour and what is on it?

How often does your menu change, and do you have daily specials?

We do large group events all the time. Weddings, luncheons, award ceremonies, celebrations, corporate meetings, just about everything. We are very detail oriented, so our group events are extremely successful.

Our permanent menu changes every 4 to 6 weeks. We make seasonal changes and add the new items which were wildly popular as daily specials. We have “specials” which we run pretty much every time we create a new dish, so approximately three times per week.

Every day at 5pm. We change our selection, usually: $3 drafts, $5 sangria, and $5 margaritas.

I see you have a whole page of martinis on your menu. What is the most popular one? What is your favorite martini? Martini’s are our specialty, and we make over 25 different ones. The most popular martini is the Hendricks Cucumber Fizz. My favorite: the white chocolate!

Can you reserve space for groups, and can you cater for the group?

When do you have live music?

Every night we offer live entertainment. This runs from piano players to guitarists and saxophone players. There are the regulars who are scheduled, and we mix in the new talent which we are constantly working into the schedule.

What was your inspiration for the garden patio?

I felt the restaurant had to have an outdoor section to be a success; people in Florida love to be outdoors. I didn’t have a view out back and knew I needed to create one, so the Dolphin Deck was born.

Where did the name of the bar come from?

The bar was named Main Street after the downtown Cocoa Beach Main Street Improvement Committee. The number 87 is the birth year of my oldest son... Spirits has its own special meaning. Most think it means alcohol, but the true meaning is our little secret.

The piano is gorgeous! It looks like an antique. What kind is it, and what is the story behind it?

A 1904 upright Grand. It was donated by a patron who is our advisor and friend. She offered us both a pool table and the piano.

FROM THE MAYOR

MALIK’S MESSAGE C O C OA B E ACH U P DAT E written by Mayor Ben Malik

As we enter the budget cycle, it is imperative we consider the fact that the city is still playing catch-up with the deep loss of property tax revenue (city’s primary source of revenue is from property taxes) from the recession: over $9.7 million in constant dollars from 2007-2014. The city has put off many needed capital projects/deferred maintenance items while our operating costs have not declined. The city recently implemented a health care clinic for its employees to help offset rising health insurance expenses and is in the third year of a wellness program that has achieved a 16% reduction in overall medical claims. Last year, Hurricane Matthew spared us from a direct hit but still required the city to dip into its reserves to the tune of over $715,000 for damages/clean up; FEMA will only reimburse up to 75% of these costs at best case, and it will be at least 2018 before the city will see those funds. Our neighbors to the north (Cape Canaveral), south (Melbourne, West Melbourne), and west (Cocoa) all benefited by new construction hitting their respective tax rolls in 2016. Per the Brevard County Property Appraiser’s office, the overall value of new construction entering the tax rolls this year is $371.45 million. Here’s where most of it occurred: $150.79 million in unincorporated Brevard $57.63 million in Melbourne $45.51 million in Palm Bay $33.72 million in West Melbourne $26.83 million in Titusville $12.36 million in Cape Canaveral $12.15 million in Rockledge Notice anyone missing??? Cocoa Beach has not had any significant new construction added to the tax base in decades. A single new five-story Homewood Suites Hotel in Cape Canaveral put over $12 million dollars onto their tax role. West Melbourne has one of the lowest millage rates of any city in Brevard County, 2.4633 per $1,000 in value, and added over $33.72 million to their tax rolls in 2016. See the correlation?

No one wants high-rise condos here in Cocoa Beach, myself included. Perhaps we can all work together to encourage some growth we can live with while recognizing we are a coastal barrier island subject to storm surge. We all cherish the small-town charm of Cocoa Beach and don’t have to change the character of the town, but it takes real dollars to run a city, and the money either comes from taxes or expansion of the tax base. Thank you for your support and allowing me to serve as your Mayor, please feel free to contact me with any suggestions at bmalik@cityofcocoabeach.com or my cell at 321-794-6668. Cocoa Beach Explorer

Protect Our Lagoon, Follow Fertilizer Laws SKIP THE PHOSPHORUS Make sure the middle number, Phosphorus (P), on your bag is zero! Only apply phosphorus if a soil test confirms it is needed.

JUST SAY NO TO N IN THE SUMMER It is against the law to apply any N (nitrogen) to the lawn during the rainy season from June 1 to September 30.

STAY AWAY FROM THE WATERWAY Keep fertilizer away from any body of water. Setbacks range from 10-25 feet. Check your local ordinance to be sure of your setbacks at www.BeFloridianNow.org

BLOW GRASS BACK Fertilize your lawn naturally! Keep all grass clippings and vegetative material away from streets, storm drains, and water bodies. Blowing them back on the lawn provides natural fertilizer!

GO SLOW ON NITROGEN IN THE SPRING You must use fertilizer with at least 50% slow-release nitrogen. The best time to apply N is in the spring.

What are the Three Numbers I See on Fertilizer Bags?

N P K

14-0-26 Nitrogen (N) Phosphate (P2O5) Potassium (K2O) or Potash

WHAT DO I LOOK FOR IN FERTILIZER? Look for the terms time-release, slow-release or controlled-release on the product label. At least 50% of the nitrogen (N) in the fertilizer should be slow-release nitrogen. To determine how much nitrogen in your fertilizer is slow-release use the “Guaranteed Analysis” (or fertilizer content) label on your fertilizer bag, along with the calculation to the right.

KNOW IF YOUR FERTILIZER IS SLOW!
