EDITOR’S LETTER Hello, and thank you for picking up the very first issue of Canaveral Explorer magazine! The Canaveral Explorer will be a monthly magazine which will keep you in touch with what is going on around town. We will have a live music calendar, information from Cape Canaveral City Hall, listings of what is going on at the Cape Canaveral Library, local stories, and much more each month. The holidays are in full swing now! We are finally getting over the large amounts of food we ate for Thanksgiving and somehow survived all the Black Friday madness. Now, it’s time to deck the halls, put up those Christmas trees, and decorate those palm trees outside. After all, it’s the most wonderful time of the year!! This month’s issue of the Canaveral Explorer is packed full of information. First, we have put together a “Holiday Happenings” page with events happening all around us in December, so you can keep track of everything. Boy, is there a lot going on! Next, Dr. Green (the Principal of Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School) sent us a story about the wonderful Veteran’s Day event they hosted at the school. Finally, our son, Scott Baker, is a bit of a history buff. He took a moment to write us up something for Pearl Harbor Day. Definitely, worth the read…and taking a moment to remember.

This date will forever be remembered as the first time the United States was surprise attacked. The devastating blow the Empire of Japan delivered that day was one that this nation will never forget. Throughout the war, millions of Americans lost their lives; but in that one day, America suffered the loss of nearly twenty-five hundred people, the loss or near destruction of eighteen naval vessels, and the demolition of two hundred and sixty warplanes. Throughout history, America had seen its fair share of devastating losses, but never as suddenly as this one. Not until we got to the September 11th terror attacks had America seen the significant loss of life like that of the attacks on Pearl Harbor. America always seems to find a way to bring its people together, and through the devastation, we find ways to get back on our feet. When a tragedy happens, our people find ways to push through. The Imperial Japanese Navy might have killed many men and women that day, but they did not stop us. Luckily, their primary targets, the aircraft carriers stationed in Pearl Harbor, were not in port that fateful morning— they just happened to be out on a training exercise. In the end, a strong America persevered. The reason to have a remembrance day for Pearl Harbor is not only to honor those brave souls who died that day, but to also remember there is always hope on the other side of tragedy. On this 77th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack, I encourage each of you to remember the courage those men and women had on that day, and if you see a military veteran, thank them. written by Scott Baker 8

CBHS VETERANS DAY REMEMBRANCE

How awesome is it that we live in a world where we can enjoy the simple pleasures – eating out on occasion, watching the sun rise at our favorite beach, searching the Internet, reading our favorite book, expressing our desires at the voting booths. There are so many things every day that we take for granted. My daughter participated in a student exchange with a family in China. Her friend, ChenYu, had no access to the Internet when they first met. After a few years, access was granted, but they used to describe Internet service as like a ‘cloud.’ Sometimes it was there, sometimes it blew away. Now ChenYu’s service is better, but what is available on the Internet is provided by the government. We live in a place that provides us freedom to engage in things that we enjoy, as well as freedom to learn, freedom to express opinions, etc. You remember . . . We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed, by their Creator, with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. -Preamble to the Declaration of Independence How did we get so lucky to be born in a place that allows us those freedoms?
On November 9, Cocoa Beach High School paid tribute to those who have fought for us to maintain all of the above – our Veterans. Under the command of LTC James DesJardin and 1st Sgt Kevin Staddie, Cocoa Beach HS JROTC unit put on a spectacular tribute to Veterans. It began with an introduction by Cadet Cmdr. Brittany Stanley and the posting of the Colors. Cadet Solimar Torres led the unit in the Cadet Creed. The Roosevelt Elementary Chorus as well as the CB Chorus performed for us. The CB Band paid honor to all the branches of the armed forces. Cadet Kayla Cowell represented children of military personnel by reading “I am a Military Child.” Our guest speaker for the ceremony was Major Ret. Chris Gibson who gave us the history of Veterans Day and spoke about the simple things in life that we can never forget how they came to be so simple. It ended with the moving Missing Man ceremony. After the ceremony, many people expressed thanks. One parent told us, “I have watched my husband wear his uniform for 20 years. I am now watching my son put his uniform on and how passionate he is about the pride he has learned from the CB JROTC program.” Thank you Veterans. Thank you LTC DesJardin and 1st Sgt. Staddie. Thank you CB JROTC Army of Cadets.

See Santas fall from the sky! Watch professional skydivers dressed as Santa demonstrate various disciplines. First jumpers will land at 11:00am dressed in Santa outfits. Then aircraft will return for the second load of jumpers and continue process until 3:30pm.
Before Santa delivers toys and gifts, he’s been breaking away to catch some waves in Cocoa Beach on Christmas Eve morning. Pretty cool, right? Surfing Santas Cocoa Beach is an annual Cocoa Beach tradition that brings hundreds of surfers dressed up as Santa. Watch them ride in on the waves and kick off your holiday beachside at this free event.
