CONGRATULATIONS COACH LOWE!
written by: Karyle Green, Ed.D., Principal, Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. HS
Cocoa Beach High School recognized Coach and Teacher Dave Lowe on his incredibly successful years as an educator, coach and mentor to students in Brevard county over the past few decades. Football has always been a part of his life. Coach Lowe, following his graduation from Merritt Island High School in the 70s, went on to play football at both East Carolina and Troy State. After his graduation, he began his coaching career at Melbourne High School. From there, he spent time at Palm Bay, Cocoa Beach and back to his alma mater, Merritt Island High School. His second stint at Cocoa Beach came in the 90s when he served as an assistant and a head coach (interrupted by one year at MCC). The 2000s, Coach Lowe coached at Holy Trinity and returned to Cocoa Beach for his 3rd and final stint in 2008. If you add all those years up as a coach, Coach Lowe has impacted well more than 1000 student athletes on the field. One of those athletes impacted by Coach Lowe is Jackson Lalani. Jackson says football means so much to him. He said, “I respect Coach Lowe a lot! He spends hours and hours of his own time to make our team better. I will miss him a lot!” During the retirement activities for Coach Lowe, Cocoa Beach also recognized Senior Ryan Tsarnas who is leaving with Coach. Ryan has played football since 8th grade. He says that Coach Lowe “always found a way to make things funny. That’s how kids learned. Kids would get in trouble and the lessons came with laughter.” Ryan also had advice for younger kids. He says, “Get in-
volved. It’s definitely worth it to try new things. You make lots of memories that you’ll carry with you.” Ryan’s plans are to head off to UF and remain active in athletics through club sports.
Coach Lowe will be missed tremendously in the classroom. As a math teacher with 40 years’ experience, the impact he had on getting those kids across the bridge is indescribable. He has a way of connecting math to real world, and getting the kids to do the work! Coach Lowe is one of the reasons Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School has been an “A” all these years. When he’s retired from here, if you’re looking for a math tutor, you’ll have to look him up! That is, IF you’ll be able to find him at home. We know Coach Lowe is looking for ways to stay involved. He and his wife have been a huge part of Cocoa Beach all these years and we definitely will find ways to keep him supporting our students and our athletes. Congratulations, Coach Dave Lowe!

MEET THE AUTHOR Friday, January 18, 2019 Cocoa Beach Public Library 10:00 am Don’t miss this opportunity to hear the fascinating and true story of author, public speaker, security speaker, consultant and trainer Michele Rigby Assad. Why did you write this book? I wrote this book to show how ordinary people can do extraordinary things when their faith is greater than their fear and intimidation. You mentioned to me that little things and small investments from others helped navigate your path in life. Can you tell us about one or two? I obtained a scholarship from Lake Eye Associates for $1500, and I used that money for my first mission trip to Egypt which I embarked on a few days after graduating high school. That trip changed the course of my life, taking me out of rural Central Florida and introducing me to the great big world. You often don’t know how small things can make a huge difference in others’ lives. Even
small investments can pay big dividends. What message do you have for young adults in high school and college that are trying to find their way? Just because your path is difficult doesn’t always mean you’re on the wrong path. If you’re willing to do what others will not and go where others refuse, you will discover the depth and breadth of your gifts and have a major impact in the world. Nothing impactful ever happens in our comfort zones. We understand you have garnered some national attention while on your current book tour. What television appearances have you made? I had the privilege of being on the Megyn Kelly show, ABC’s

Beyond 007 The CIA looks for walking contradictions—people who can keep secrets, yet can pull classified information out of others; people who love their country, yet are able to leave it behind, and head into dangerous places to perform our nations most highly sensitive tasks; people who can live a double life... in spite of all the personal 48 it N. entails. Brevard Ave. Cocoa Beach, FL and professional stress that
20/20, Fox Business, C-SPAN in addition to events at the International Spy Museum, Smithsonian, and Google. I bet you have a fun story or two that has happened to you while on this book tour. Can you share one? My favorite memory was meeting a young lady, I think she was about seven years old, while doing a book signing at Costco in Altamonte Springs. She wants to be an intelligence officer when she grows up and to be able to serve as a role model for such an adorable young lady gives me great joy! We all need role models to look up to, people who look like us, so we can imagine ourselves in their shoes.
What thought or lasting message would you like your readers to walk away with? We are capable of doing so much more than we can imagine. Don’t limit yourself. Do the things that scare and challenge you and will you discover talents you didn’t know you had. Any thoughts of writing anymore books? Yes, I have a couple of ideas for follow-on books. I’m looking forward to writing again. Anything else you would like to share with our readers? Don’t worry about jumping into the deep end of the pool. You don’t have to go into the CIA or the Middle East to make a difference. Focus on the baby steps. Focus on the people and the activities in your orbit and grow from there.
