EDITOR’S LETTER

Welcome to June! We are halfway through 2019, and the long, hot days have just begun! Buckle up, it’s going to be a warm one. Also, June 1st is the start of hurricane season. Start putting your kits together, so it doesn’t sneak up on you. Hopefully, you will be using everything up in the late Fall because we didn’t need that hurricane kit. Fingers crossed we have a quiet season. The long-awaited recreational space is now open in Cape Canaveral, and it has already gone to the dogs! Rover’s Space has everything to keep your furry friends happy and playful. Check out this month’s article on Rover’s Space and make sure to take your four-legged friend there soon.

The city has provided some helpful information on stormwater discharge and how to keep our lagoon happy and healthy. Also, Commissioner Wes Morrison put together some great information about keeping safe on the beach this summer. We would like to take a moment and thank Dr. Green for writing about what is going on at Cocoa Beach Jr/Sr High every month. Check out her last article in this month’s issue. We wish her well with her promotion. email: info@explorermultimedia.com

Check out our Facebook page and give us a phone: “Like”. We will try and 321-759-6064 keep you up to date on stuff happening around Cape Canaveral and Port Canaveral. Don’t forget your Dad. Father’s Day is June 16th. We hope that all you Dads have a GREAT Father’s Day!!

MAYOR’S

MESSAGE Beach Days are here again! Hello Cape Canaveral Community! Summer is here, school is out and that means beach days for so many during the #SummerOfSpace! The City of Cape Canaveral has been ramping up efforts on conservation and shows no signs of slowing down. Not only are we rolling out new sustainability signage for recycling, raising the bar on sea turtle awareness, but we are installing eco-friendly design aspects like beach toy exchange boxes and tamperproof cigarette butt holders… all creative methods to help improve our Community’s quality of life and environmental stewardship.

get involved and stay informed! There is a Planning and Zoning Meeting on June 13th and a City Council Meeting on June 21st where the issue will be discussed and the opportunity for public input is available. Both meetings are held at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall on their respective dates. To ensure full transparency on the issue, we have a dedicated web page to this topic where you can see the maps of affected properties, links to view recorded meetings on the topic and an explainer video on what’s happening: www.cityofcapecanaveral.org/city_code_changes. Contact staff in the Community Development Department if you have questions.

In addition, we are working on THREE new parks of all sizes in the City, and I hope our community is aware of all we have going on! Read the article about the City of Cape Canaveral parks in this issue for the latest news and plans!

Friday Fest and the GRAND OPENING of Rover’s Space is June 7th from 6:00–10:00 p.m. on Taylor Avenue. Join the fun and meet your neighbors while listening to live music by The Wild Card Band and enjoying bounce houses, food trucks, vendors! #LoveWhereYouLive Make sure to sign-up for the City’s weekly update, so you can always know when events are occurring. Also, follow the City’s official social media pages to be even more in the know!

On another note, code changes/land use changes are coming! Approximately 700 properties are currently zoned incorrectly (residential units that are zoned commercial) and the City is in the process of addressing the issue. We urge residents/property owners to

I hope everyone has an enjoyable start to their summer, and I’ll see you around the City!

Rover’s Space: Cape Canaveral’s New Doggy Digs CONTRIBUTING WRITER: MOLLY THOMAS, Cape Canaveral Cultural Programs Manager

It’s finally happened! Cape Canaveral’s most anticipated recreational space is now open — and it’s already gone to the dogs! Rover’s Space is located at 106 Taylor Avenue, within the Xeriscape Park and across from the Nancy Hanson Recreation Complex. This shady spot comes complete with water features, Little Free Pup Pantry, Pedigree Easy Turf and custom obstacles fit for canines of all calibers. Divided into separate areas for larger and smaller dogs, this park has all the accommodations to

make for an amazing off-leash experience for both dogs and their owners. Rover’s Space is open daily from dawn to 8:00 p.m. All users must adhere to the posted rules and responsibilities and we appreciate the Community doing everything in their power to ensure this new space stays clean and fun for many years to come! Help Keep Our Lagoon Healthy CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Zachary Eichholz, Assistant to the Community Services Director

Only let rain down the drain! Stormwater drains, the drains you see on the sides of roads and parking lots, are a vital piece of City infrastructure that are responsible for helping to prevent flooding. Because road surfaces are impermeable, meaning water cannot flow through them, rainwater has no place to go when it falls. Stormwater drains help to collect this water and safely divert it away from populated areas. From here the water flows into grassy swales, stormwater ponds, or the Indian River Lagoon. As is the case with stormwater drains across the country, water flowing into them is untreated. This is why we must all do our part and make sure that only rain flows down the drain! City Staff have begun placing medallions on each of the City’s newly rebuilt concrete storm drain embankments that serve as a reminder to residents and visitors to not dump harmful substances such

as hazardous waste, cleaners, vehicle fluids, medications, litter, or even yard waste into the City’s stormwater system. Useful tips include: • Checking your vehicle for fluid leaks • Blowing grass clippings back onto your lawn • Composting yard waste • Reducing or eliminating use of fertilizers or moving to naturally-based ones (the City uses Green Gobbler) The City especially encourages residents and visitors to follow this last point. Synthetic fertilizers have been linked to dangerous algae blooms in the lagoon. It is important to remember Brevard County’s annual fertilizer ban, which runs from June 1st to September 30th. The ban restricts the use of fertilizers containing nitrogen and/ or phosphorus applied to turf, landscape plants or to saturated soils.

For more information on lawn and garden care visit http://sfyl.ifas.ufl.edu/brevard/lawn-and-garden/ and to learn about the City’s Illicit Discharge Ordinance (IDO) visit https://bit.ly/2EpfPeT

THANK YOU FOR SHARING THE TREASURE OF COCOA BEACH CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Karyle Green, Ed.D. Principal of Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School

Beginning June 3, Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School will have a new principal. Dr. Mark Rendell will be joining the staff this summer taking the helm of the 39th ranked high school in the state of Florida!!

without the hours you share with us. We have parents who take the time to support their children by attending events, meetings and celebrations. All of our parents want what is best for their child. By their desire, all of our students succeed. They demand a top notch education for our students and we all do our best to comply.

My time here has been wonderful. I believe Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School is the treasure of Brevard County. Our students have incredible talent and aspirations for the future. I know that you know this, but we have future academics, athletes, musicians, actors and actresses, those who will serve in the military, writers, thinkers, scientists, historians, future business leaders, homemakers, parents and legislators walking our hallways. I know that whatever our students choose as their path, they will find success. I have enjoyed meeting many, many parents. We have tremendous volunteers who work for the benefit of clubs and teams and to help out teachers and staff. Our school couldn’t survive

And what we wouldn’t do without the community! If it wasn’t for SAC members, Elks, Rotary, Kiwanis, Cocoa Beach Women’s Club, our churches, DAR, Take Stock in Children mentors, local businesses our students would miss out on so much. They provide for us in so many ways and I want to thank them for everything they do for our kids!

The treasure of Cocoa Beach - students involved in their community

And then, there’s the teachers and staff. Cocoa Beach has some of the best teachers in the county and state. We also have the top staff. I see dedication and hard work every day from those who share their knowledge and provide the learning opportunities that our students get to experience. That’s why Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School remains and “A” school each year. I am confident we will continue to strive for excellence. Thank you for sharing the treasure of Cocoa Beach!

In large part due to the support from our sponsors and the CB community, the Boys Program accomplished a few major feats this season. Championship Game win over Viera

Undefeated Boys JV Team

Firstly, the Boys Varsity Team finished a wildly successful season with a 15-3 record and won the programs' first District Championship. The team scored 300 goals this season while only letting 130 against and boasted 3 Senior Players on the All Cape Coast Conference Team. Also, our Boys JV Team completed an undefeated season, finishing 12-0. canaveral e x plorer

In addition to the many environmental benefits a park can provide, including land restoration and habitat preservation, decreasing air pollution, and water filtration (save the Indian River Lagoon related stormwater projects), parks create an economic benefit for government, businesses and residents. Creating well planned parks and preserving sufficient land for them can generate financial returns that are often many times greater than the money initially invested into the project, even when maintenance costs are factored in. They bring people into nature, make outdoor recreation more accessible, and provide safe and attractive places for individuals and families to exercise and play. “The average American now spends 90 percent of their life indoors. Some 40 Wagner Park

percent of adults no longer engage in any leisure physical activity at all. Some 90 percent of healthcare costs go to treating the 132 million Americans who suffer from treatable chronic diseases such as diabetes, depression, anxiety and high blood pressure. There are now 78 million obese adults and 12 million obese kids. Furthermore, the trends seem to only be heading in the wrong direction.” Source: The Dirt - A Solution to the Health Crisis: Prescribed Time in Neighborhood Parks. City leadership is focused on providing the community with high-quality local parks that open the door for all generations to play, grow and explore. For more information on city parks, renting facilities and related park rules, please visit: www.cityofcapecanaveral.org/parks.

Wagner Park

Did you know the City of Cape Canaveral has nine parks? The Vision Statement and 2018 Community Survey have been the guiding documents shaping The Space Between® into a bikeable/walkable amenity filled paradise – whether it’s sunsets on the lagoon, kickball with friends or a quick game of Bocce! Last month the City opened its first off-leash dog spot within Xeriscape Park called “Rover’s Space”. In addition, staff is in the process of building two “pocket parks” along North Atlantic Avenue, clearing invasive species away for an Estuary Park Project on Long Point Road and is in the process of designing the Multi-Generational Facility and C.A.P.E. Center. Parks provide a great benefit to our community – for both residents and visitors.

Safety & Stewardship

in the Sand on Cape Canaveral Beaches

Cape Canaveral’s world-famous coastline has been attracting folks from all walks of life for years. As summer kicks off, it’s important for residents and visitors to remember these safety & stewardship tips.

Plan Your Trip and Know Where to Go:

Watch for Rip Currents:

Popular beach spots in the area are Jetty Park and Cherie Down Park. Both offer public parking and amenities such as bathrooms, showers, and picnic tables. Lifeguards are on duty, making these parks a safe and favorite spot for families.

Play Your Part in Preservation and Protection: Finding new ways to preserve and protect our natural resources can enrich your beach experience. Here, your family can enjoy the shores, while practicing good stewardship. Help the Sea Turtles by staying off dunes and filling in holes in the sand. Our vast stretch of beach shore (thanks to a recent renourishment project) gives plenty of room to spread out without trampling the natural habitats in the sea oats and dunes. If kids dig holes for sandcastles, fill them in before you leave. Turtles can fall in and become trapped.

Cape Canaveral also offers beach access to our residents and visitors where the “streets meet the beach.” Since our beach access streets are located in residential areas, please remember to be respectful of the homeowners and only use designated parking areas to get to the beach. We celebrate access for all with ADA Mobimats® located at Polk, Monroe, and Buchanan Avenues. These pathways make it easier for individuals of all abilities to get to the water, including persons using wheelchairs, parents with strollers, and those who want more stability on the sand. You will also find that many of our beach crossovers have been improved with new anti-slip applications.

CONTRIBUTING WRITER: WES MORRISON Council Member for the City of Cape Canaveral W.Morrison@cityofcapecanaveral.org www.wesmorrison.net

When I chat with tourists and newcomers to the area, many will comment on fears of hurricanes and lightning. While we shouldn’t downplay their severity, there is another categorized weatherrelated threat far greater for beachgoers: Rip Currents. NWS Melbourne reports on their website that in East Central Florida, Rip Currents resulted in more weather-related deaths than Tornadoes, Hurricanes, and Lightning combined from 1989-2014. Rip Currents don’t pull swimmers under the water; instead, they pull someone out further into deep water. Drownings occur because a swimmer can’t keep themselves afloat and tire out while trying to swim back. Our beach crossovers feature signage about Rip Current Safety and warnings. Review how to spot a Rip Current and what to do if you are caught in one. “If in doubt, don’t go out!”

If you walk down the beach, bring a bag and pick up trash along the way. If you spot abandoned toys, instead of tossing them in the garbage, drop them off in our new Community Beach Toy Library on Jefferson Avenue! The City of Cape Canaveral team installed a place for “Mermaid’s Lost Toys” with the help of local Eagle Scouts and Satellite Beach. Inspiration + Relaxation is found here. Get inspired and strengthen this community with safety and good stewardship of our natural resources. Staying informed and engaged makes it all happen right here within Cape Canaveral The Space Between®.
