15 Successful Years of Community Involvement with Sea Oats Spring is in the air….AND all the spring breakers are on our roads, in our hotels, and getting on our cruise ships. You can absolutely tell by the traffic on A1A that it is spring. Can you blame them? They just want to experience our little piece of paradise. In this issue of the Canaveral Explorer, Council Member Wes Morrison shares with us the annual sea oats planting event. It was a great event, and he explains how it went and why it is so important to our coastline.

13 Recycling: Is Your Household Keeping Up With New Guidelines?
The City of Cape Canaveral has a ton of events happening this month. Make sure to mark your calendars; you don’t want to miss any of them. Speaking of events, make sure to check out the article about the Founder’s Day Festival happening April 13th at Manatee Sanctuary Park. It’s always been a fun celebration for the community, but this year has been kicked up a bit with a community chowder cook-off to help raise money for a new playground at Cape View Elementary. This is a great cause we can all sink our teeth into (yes, pun intended).

MAYOR’S
MESSAGE Hello Cape Canaveral Community! It’s Spring in Cape Canaveral and that means some great annual community events, the start of sea turtle season, new life budding all around us, new faces in our Community and perfect weather! As a New Year’s resolution I challenged you to get more involved in your Community by attending City events, participating in City meetings and reaching out to myself or Staff with your concerns. At the most recent Friday Fest (3/1) I saw so many new faces, spoke to numerous first time ‘Friday Festers’ and was so glad to be able to share all the exciting City happenings! Our conversations touched on current and future projects related to: the Multi-Generational Facility, sustainability, the Indian River Lagoon, C.A.P.E. Center, FPL’s LED light replacement project and bikeable/walkable initiatives, but I also heard a lot about the love for our evolving city! If you are interested in keeping in the know regarding City of Cape Canaveral news, events, project information and financial information - then you’ll want to sign-up for The Weekly Update. The Weekly Update is a multi-page document that the Community Services Department compiles weekly from submissions by every City department, Cape Canaveral Volunteer Fire Department and the Brevard County Sheriff ’s Office (BCSO). There is no easier way to stay up-to-date with City news than signing up for The Weekly Update. To sign-up visit www.cityofcapecanaveral.org/weekly_update - it’s that easy! So many Community centered events this April: Friday Fest is April 5, 2019 from 6–10 p.m. on Taylor Avenue. Join the fun and meet your neighbors while listening to live music, enjoying bounce houses, food trucks, vendors + a sense of community! We are also targeting the ribbon cutting ceremony and GRAND OPENING of the Rover’s Space dog park on Taylor Avenue to occur that night too! Check the website for details!
The 38th annual Trash Bash will be on Saturday, April 6, 2019. We need the whole Community’s help for this one! As part of the Great American Cleanup, KBB’s Trash Bash will partner with the City of Cape Canaveral to remove trash, litter and urban pollution from the beach, streets and neighborhoods. The event will take place from 8 a.m. to noon starting at Cherie Down Park.
Founders’ Day - A Celebration of all things Cape Canaveral - will be on Saturday, April 13, 2019 in Manatee Sanctuary Park. This Community event will feature live music with Steel Kick’n, a chowder cook-off, Touch-A-Truck, local history, photo booth, bounce houses + obstacle courses, Home Depot Kids Workshop, face painting and MORE!

SEUSSICAL THE MUSICAL
CONTRIBUTING WRITER: KARYLE GREEN, Ed.D. PRINCIPAL OF COCOA BACH JR./SR. HIGH SCHOOL
Have you ever had the opportunity to see a play put on by the award-winning Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School drama department? Did you read Dr. Seuss books to your children? Did your parents read them to you? On April 11th, 2019 at 10:00 am, the award-winning Cocoa Beach Jr. / Sr. High School Fine Arts Department will proudly present, Seussical the Musical! Music is by Stephen Flaherty, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, from the book by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens. Co-conceived by Lynn Ahrens, Stephen Flaherty and Eric Idle. Seussical the Musical is based on the books by Dr. Seuss. It’s characters and plot lines derive from Horton Hears a Who, but there are many other story lines built in to the play. Now one of
Seussical Dancers
the most performed shows in America, Seussical is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza. The Cat in the Hat tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust that contains the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child sent off to military school for thinking too many “thinks.” Horton faces a double challenge: not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in

Some of the amazing cast include the following: Kristiana Quiett as Cat in the Hat, Julianne Patillo as JoJo, Chris DeMuro as Horton, Ava Bogle as Gertrude and Ava Boyd as Mayzie. Stagecraft technical assistance students include Lucas Harges and Xavier Matos. Of course, many other of our students are involved in both acting, singing, dancing and stagecraft! Seussical will be presented April 11, 12 and 13 at 7:00 p.m. in the Cocoa Beach Auditorium. Our student cast members and our behind-the-scenes stage craft students have worked hard over the past several months to create a fun-filled evening for all who attend. 15 SUCCESSFUL YEARS
of Community Involvement with Cape Canaveral Sea Oats CONTRIBUTING WRITER: WES MORRISON COUNCIL MEMBER FOR THE CITY OF CAPE CANAVERAL W.MORRISON@CITYOFCAPECANAVERAL.ORG | WWW.WESMORRISON.NET
As a resident and public servant in Cape Canaveral, I am proud of our community working together to preserve natural resources. This can be seen during the Annual Sea Oats Planting held during February. This event addresses the need to protect our shoreline from erosion.
City of Cape Canaveral coastline. A class-action lawsuit, eventually settled decades later, obligated the Federal Government to help restore financial losses and sand on the beaches. However, sea oats were not a part of that, and residents knew it was going to take a long time to rebuild.
My family and I enjoy attending and find it to be a great time to teach children how to respect the sea oats and share how they play a vital role in building up dunes. The strong root system of sea oats can stand extreme weather, which helps them preserve the beaches and foundations beneath the beachfront property and serve as a habitat for sea turtles during nesting season.
One of those residents was Buzz Petsos, who served on the City Council and eventually led as the event’s volunteer coordinator. He was looking for ways the City could improve our resiliency. The idea was to install small sand fences followed by annual sea oats plantings. Buzz was supported by the approval of the Council and events have continued annually.
Volunteers do the physical work on this project along with City Staff. The reason we do this is that sea oats are not prolific seed producers, and our help ensures wide-spread growth. Once permitting/approval is complete and flats of propagules are purchased, we transplant them by using a stick to dig a hole in the sand to plant the sea oats. Then, we add plant gel and sand to lock in the moisture. We follow a particular order for the spacing and depth of the plantings. This initiative began because in the 1950s Port Canaveral inlet was dredged by the US Army Corps of Engineers, blocking the natural flow of sand from the north to the

Cape Canaveral Director of Community Services, Joshua Surprenant, helped me estimate 15 years of numbers regarding sea oats. The City planted about 2,750 sea oats in the first year and set an annual record of 10,000 sea oats in 2019. To date, the City of Cape Canaveral has invested about $55,000 to purchase a total of 111,550 sea oats. This year, we received help from about 120 volunteers and about 1,000 total over the years. What is also remarkable is seeing some residents double down on their efforts. Harbor Heights neighborhood residents hold fundraisers to buy and plant more sea oats for their beach area. Not only do they come out during the annual planting event, but they sometimes host additional events with the use of their supplies, tools, and funds they have raised over time.

Through social media and word of mouth, the events have become more than just a day of work. It is a day of community and resiliency for our future. While you enjoy Cape Canaveral beaches, take time to look at (but don’t touch) the sea oats. Many hands have made them possible, and I continue to be amazed at what our neighbors can accomplish together. Planting for our future!

Guidelines have changed... is your household keeping up? CONTRIBUTING WRITER: ZACHARY EICHHOLZ ASSISTANT TO THE COMMUNITY SERVICES DIRECTOR, CITY OF CAPE CANAVERAL
On Tuesday, February 26, City Council Member Angela Raymond, myself and the City Planner attended a tour of the Waste Management recycling facility in Cocoa. This single facility is responsible for processing all of Brevard County’s recycling stream, including from the City of Cape Canaveral through its own waste service, Waste Pro. Built in 2014, this recycling facility receives dozens of shipments of recyclables from the hours of 5:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. and unfortunately each shipment is contaminated with non-recyclable items.
However, glass is still accepted in residential recycling.
Contamination rates vary from area to area across the County but on average a shipment of recyclables will have 25% to 35% contamination! Some areas see rates as low as 10%, others as high as 80%. According to facility officials, plastic bags are the biggest containment that must be manually removed from machinery by workers. Glass is also an item not recommended by facility officials, as it can be hazardous to workers when it breaks, is abrasive to sorting machinery and does not have much market value as a recyclable currently.
FLATTENED CARDBOARD THAT ISN’T CONTAMINATED WITH FOOD OILS (as is often the case with pizza boxes)
An average month will see 8,500 tons of material go through this one facility! To assist in the recycling process, Residents should focus their recycling efforts on only a select number of products in order to optimize best waste practices: EMPTY & CLEAN PLASTIC BOTTLES EMPTY & CLEAN ALUMINUM CANS
NEWSPAPERS FLAT, NON-SHREDDED OFFICE PAPER
Plastic bags should never be put in a home recycling bin and should only be brought to specified receptacles, which can be found at major retailers like Publix, Walmart, Target and Best Buy. Also never place other recyclables inside of plastic bags in recycling bins. Do not attempt to recycle items in your home bins such as food waste, Styrofoam or electronics. The messaging is also changing. Many of us have adopted the phrase “reduce, reuse and recycle.” Recently though, a fourth “R” has been added to this phrase and it is perhaps the most important one to remember: REFUSE. The best way to cut down your waste is to simply refuse buying environmentally harmful consumables such as plastics, straws and balloons. Every time you say no to one of these items you help to bring our community, our county and our world closer to a zero waste future. To help streamline the City’s recycling efforts, new informative signage and stickers will begin to be rolled out across City facilities in the coming months.
