It’s August! Hot weather, afternoon thunderstorms, and the kids get to go back to school. What else could you ask for? It’s hard to believe the summer is just about over for the kids. Seems like they just got out of school. Speaking of schools, I would like to take a moment to congratulate Cocoa Beach Junior/Senior High School on another “A” grade for the 2018-2019 school year. We are all proud of the students and staff. The City of Cape Canaveral has supplied us with some articles for this month’s issue of Canaveral Explorer magazine. Make sure to give Mayor Hoog’s message a read— he keeps us up to date on what is happening around town. Next, Councilman Wes Morrison wrote a great piece on how the history of the Apollo 11 and President John F. Kennedy continue to inspire us on the Space Coast. Lastly, read about the Hot Dogz on a Stix a Real 1960’s Surf Contest and how it was a great event for the City of Cape Canaveral to promote their sustainability initiatives to residents and visitors alike.

MESSAGE Summer is nearing an end and for so many of our local children that means back to school! We’ve been helping our local Cape View Elementary students get back to school the right way— with all the supplies they need in hand to have a productive school year! The first round of the Backpack Jamboree took place at Cape View Elementary on Wednesday, July 10th in conjunction with their school registration. The backpack event is held in partnership with VFW Post 10131 and the Auxiliary. Principal Keane reached out to the City and requested the backpack event be split into two dates to encourage participation in their registration. Many parents prioritize their registration date based on when the City’s backpack event takes place. The next registration event date and Backpack Jamboree is August 5th where parents come out and are elated to get the new backpacks filled with grade-appropriate school supplies. For many parents, this program assists families with ensuring children have the necessary supplies to be successful at school. A big thank you to the entire team involved in making this endeavor a reality. #SummerOfSpace is continuing and with it so is the giant cultural leap of our Community! Part of the Summer of Space initiatives included you deciding on the design for a large, permanent, space-themed mural that will be erected in the next few months! Also, have you spotted the awesome, colorful, space-themed traffic cabinet wraps that have recently been placed around the City or been to the photo exhibit of 50-year-old throwback pictures which is on display in our City Hall (100 Polk Avenue) Community Artifacts Rooms?!? We couldn’t be prouder to be a huge part of the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing!

On March 27, 2019, City leadership met in a workshop setting to conduct a strategic planning analysis of the City. The workshop provided an opportunity for the City Council to consider a report related to Council-established priorities, projects, initiatives and 5-Year Capital Improvement Projects, proposed on-going goals and to discuss revisions to the City of Cape Canaveral Vision Statement, adopt a City Mission Statement and adopt a set of Organizational Values.

Culture Arts Preservation Enrichment (CAPE) Center Repurposing the old City Hall building as an accredited institution of cultural enrichment, with a focus on public engagement in all aspects of the arts as well as the promotion and preservation of Cape Canaveral’s history. Canaveral City Park Redevelopment A recent needs study revealed many of the existing Park’s deficiencies. Outside of improved mobility within and around the Park, the following amenities were found to be desperately wanted by the Community: Multi-Generational Facility (MGF), splash pad, improved playground equipment, pedways and landscaping.

At the June 18, 2019, City Council meeting, the Council approved the 2019 Priorities, Projects, Initiatives and 5-Year Capital Improvement Projects; City Council Strategic Planning Retreat Minutes of March 27, 2019; the Cape Canaveral Vision Statement, Mission Statement and Organizational Values; and the following projects:

A N “A” S C H O O L As this summer is drawing to a close, we have some great news to share with the community. Cocoa Beach Junior Senior High School has a history of strong academic achievement, and we just received some results for the 2018-2019 school year. The Florida Department of Education has once again named Cocoa Beach an “A” school. The Department of Education has been assigning school grades since 1999; Cocoa Beach has been an “A” school all but two years in that span! The Department of Education calculates these school grades using student test scores and other data such as graduation rate and participation in advanced courses. Speaking of advanced courses, we also learned that once again our students have performed very well in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. Our passing rate for this extremely demanding curriculum was 86% which was the highest in Brevard County and well above the state (74%), national (66%), and even the international average (77%). Further, 31 of our graduates

earned the prestigious International Baccalaureate Diploma. This is an incredible achievement for these students. It certainly takes hard work by everyone on the team to continue to record such strong numbers. Our students and staff work very hard, and that leads to these results. It is certainly something to celebrate. I did say summer was drawing to a close. We are all very excited to dive into another school year and help prepare our young people for their future. The first day of school is Monday, August 12th. Our first home football game is August 23rd, and Homecoming week is October 14th-18th.

THE CHOICE IS OURS How The History Of Apollo 11 And President John F. Kennedy Continue To Inspire Residents Of The Space Coast

We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard... ...because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win,” President John F. Kennedy stated those words to Rice University in Houston on September 12, 1962. This famous speech inspired and united our nation with one specific goal. On July 20, 1969, that goal was accomplished when American NASA Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took those steps on the lunar surface, with support from Michael Collins in the Command Module. I am 36 years old today and I was not born yet to watch this historic mission, but many of our residents and neighbors were here. I grew up in Brevard County aka “The Space Coast” where the ambition and grit of the “Space Race” is part of our DNA. Space Center workers like my mom, aunts, uncles, and family friends would share the stories of our homegrown heroes and how they made an impact on this area.

This past month, I visited our Nation’s Capital in Washington DC with my family. One of our first stops was Arlington National Cemetery. Words cannot describe

the power of such a place. From the changing of the guards to the vast landscape of headstones stretching as far as the eye can see, it is hard to comprehend the sacrifices made within each person’s lifetime. We visited the Eternal Flame, where President Kennedy was laid to rest. It is a beautiful place. Along the edge of the memorial, some of his most inspiring words are etched in stone. One quote, in particular, that spoke to me read, “Let every nation know whether it wishes us well or ill that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and success of Liberty.” This brings me back to the title of the article, “The Choice is Ours”. When I came home from seeing that Eternal Flame to the powerful flames that propel rockets into outer space right from our backyard, I remembered how fortunate we are to be surrounded by such inspiration every day. No matter what we choose to do in life, we make a choice to be committed, to bear any burden, and meet any hardship when the goal is worth the sacrifice. If we are just interested in our choice, it is easy to get distracted and lose sight of the

That is exactly what President Kennedy did when he inspired the nation to go to the moon. The men and women of the Space Coast chose to answer that call. While the missions look different today with new players and policy, living here in the City of Cape Canaveral and being able to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing this past month is something that not everyone gets to experience. I hope you will join me in some time for reflection of the magnitude of what was accomplished and approach your own challenges in life with the same clarity and drive that the pioneers of space took with them to the moon.

photo credit: Paul Cooper City Staff were on hand at the first annual “Hot Dogz on a Stix a Real 1960’s Surf Contest” at the Lincoln Avenue beach access on Friday, July 5th to showcase two ongoing major sustainability initiatives, recycling education and Beach Speech Bubbles; answer any questions regarding City projects; give out some City swag in honor of the Summer of Space; and provide the ever-beloved game of cornhole. The City also sponsored the event’s two Porta Potties and handwashing station. The competition itself was hosted by CORE SURF, a well-known local surfing shop located at 7008 N Atlantic Ave. It celebrated not only our beautiful oceanside amenity but also the historic significance of surfing culture to the area. Those involved with the contest surfed on vintage boards dating back to the 1960s or earlier. Sustainability and stewardship of our beach also played a role. On

display was a test version of the City’s new Beach Speech Bubbles, or #BeachBubble, reminding visitors to take their trash home and not leave it on the beach. These bubbles seem to be a hit amongst residents and visitors alike with many compliments and much appreciation given towards the bubble’s unique form of outreach. Given so much positive feedback, both at events and on social media, the City intends (in the near future) to place semipermanent versions at City beach accesses. These will be made of metal and anchored into the sand. There will be different versions of the bubbles displaying information ranging from sea turtle awareness to properly disposing of one’s trash and cigarette butts. The City also showcased its new recycling signage in the form of handouts, magnets and sandwich board signs. You may have noticed this signage popping up at various

City events and facilities that are used frequently by residents of the Community. Due to recent marketwide changes, mainly stemming from China’s 2017 decision to increase acceptable contamination rates on imported recyclable goods to just 0.5% from other countries, the US recycling industry has had to endure some major challenges. As a result, millions of tons of recyclable goods that were once shipped to China for processing now have nowhere to go forcing the value of these goods to plummet and making recycling programs unaffordable for many cities and counties. However, the City of Cape Canaveral still has an active recycling program through its primary waste contractor, WastePro. Due to the recent recycling industry changes, the City has been advising residents to only recycle certain items in an effort to cut down on contamination and narrow down

the City’s waste stream to goods that are still economically viable; in other words, goods that will surely be purchased and taken to be recycled into new items. Items that should be placed in your curbside bin are empty/clean plastic water bottles, empty and clean aluminum (or steel) cans, unshredded office papers, newspapers and unsoiled/ dry corrugated cardboard. Throughout the day of the contest the skies were clear, and the air was hot, but this didn’t stop almost a hundred surfers and attendees from riding the waves and braving the scorching sand. According to the City’s historian, this is the first known surf competition to have taken place within the modern City limits of Cape Canaveral. What an incredibly cool and engaging tradition to begin within our Community. Great job, CORE SURF!
