MAYOR’S CAPE CANAVERAL

MESSAGE

The new year is upon us and the City of Cape Canaveral is stronger than ever. Residents and visitors can expect a great 2019 as the City Manager and City Council work to uphold our Community Vision Statement, expand on existing city-to-citizen communication and increase outreach opportunities. Our little city has gone through a lot of community-driven change and economic development over the last decade, and there is more coming in the way of the new C.A.P.E Center, the Multi-Generational Facility, pedestrian safety and sidewalk improvements, four global brand hotels and resiliency efforts, plus stormwater improvements that will help clean and restore the Indian River Lagoon. Your city’s can-do attitude is creating a sustainable, safe and fun place for new, long-term and seasonal residents to live, laugh and play! Speaking of play, February is the return of the Health First Mayors’ Fitness Challenge, and #TeamCapeCanaveral needs your help to be named “Most Fit City.” We earned the title during the 2017 challenge with more than 500,000 active minutes, but last year we lost a hard battle to the City of Cocoa Beach. This year we are bringing home the trophy - you hear that Mayor Malik?! For updates on the 2019 Mayors’ Fitness Challenge and to sign up, please visit the City website or official City social media accounts… you do regularly check updates on the City website and follow the City on social media, right? Two of the biggest takeaways from the 2018 Community Survey were that the participants’ preferred methods of communication are the City website and official social media channels, and that they are hungry for more information on City projects and initiatives. To address those desires, the City Manager has already initiated a website upgrade in 2019 to offer more online services, streamline content and simplify webpage navigation. This year will also see more Community Outreach Sessions for Staff to share knowledge with you in the areas of embracing new technology (Tech-Talk), Low-Impact Development (LID), proper tree maintenance and single-stream recycling. All of this information and more is inside the City’s weekly e-newsletter called The Weekly Update. Visit www.cityofcapecanaveral.org to sign up for the Weekly Update. You’ll also find all the latest information there on City events and news, project updates and how to contact City Staff.

As the Space Coast transforms around us, the City of Cape Canaveral is leading the way - progressively embracing new technology, investing in quality-of-life projects, harnessing tourism impacts and adapting to environmental changes. As our area changes, residents and visitors of The Space Between® will be called on to change with it, and for that to be successful we need you to be engaged in the conversation. Get involved by attending City events, workshops, outreach sessions, joining an advisory board or simply following the City on social media. Our Community will have greater success if we all row in the same direction.. I’ll see you around the City!

CALLING TEAM TRACI!!!

CONTRIBUTING WRITER: KARYLE GREEN, Ed.D. PRINCIPAL OF COCOA BACH JR./SR. HIGH SCHOOL

If you’ve been a part of Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. HS over the past 13 years, you would have crossed paths with Traci Riddlehoover, our bookkeeper. Everyone knows Traci. She has kept our financial records clean, accurate and current. She works with coaches to make sure our teams are equipped, our concession stands are full and our officials are paid. She works with club sponsors to ensure that events can be held, students can travel and donations are credited to the proper accounts. Last year, Cocoa Beach was one of four schools in Brevard County without any audit comments. That’s a testament to Traci’s knowledge, efficiency and work ethic! They say that things can change in an instant. That’s what happened to Traci on December 4, 2018, when she was involved in a single-car accident on the way to work. Traci was taken to Holmes Trauma Center with multiple injuries including those to her C5 and C6 vertebrae. She underwent surgery that afternoon to repair broken bones in her neck and other soft tissue injuries. The initial prognosis was bleak – paralysis from the neck down. But since then, there have been some positive signs. Traci now has use of her arms, but not her hands. She is not able to walk. Unfortunately, Traci’s doctors are not sure if she will ever regain use of her hands or be able to walk again. She is currently in a rehabilitation hospital that specializes in spinal cord injuries. Much of this treatment and rehab that she needs is not fully covered by her insurance.

Photo provided by Karyle Green

There is so much that is needed to support her rehabilitation. Not only monetarily, as insurance does not fully cover costs, but in the form of manpower to design and retrofit her house for wheelchair accessibility, a van that is wheelchair compatible, and even a wheelchair to help her get around. If you have expertise in the area of construction or know someone who does, or if you have an organization willing to take on a cause, or if you know Traci personally, please consider finding a way to support the efforts to help Traci be mobile! With continuing specialized rehab and therapies, it is the hope that she will regain as much function as possible.

Traci and her mom. Photo provided by Karyle Green

Traci is proud daughter of Rosemary Brutto and the late Sergeant Louis Brutto where he served for 21 years at the Brevard County Sheriff ’s Dept. She has been employed by Cocoa Beach Jr/Sr. HS at Brevard County Schools for the past 18 years. Join us as we strive to Get Traci Mobile Again! Call Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. HS for more info!

THREE WAYS TO LOVE CAPE CANAVERAL CONTRIBUTING WRITER: WES MORRISON

I love this city and this love has grown by embracing

what makes it truly special. Some people move to Cape Canaveral with a short-term plan to never settle down. Others have relocated from all over the world to retire. Many people just come here for vacation. Regardless of how you got here, it doesn’t take much to give this special city a little piece of your heart. Below are a few ways you can learn to love it here!

1

Harbor Heights Neighbors 2018 Sea Oat Planting in Cape Canaveral. Photo provided by Wes Morrison

2

Find activities you already love and go do them.

You probably love many types of activities that you did while growing up in your hometown or that you only do while on vacation. You don’t need to go far to experience those same activities here. Maybe it is exploring local culture, arts, shopping, food, and live music. Personally, I love to embrace the outdoors by fishing, surfing, biking, running and meeting new friends at events like Friday Fest.

3

Find something remarkable and go love it.

Find what is broken and go fix it.

Every place has something truly remarkable if you look for it. Cape Canaveral is no exception. Watching an evening Lagoon sunset or a morning beach sunrise are remarkable ways to start or end your day. You’ll be intrigued to learn about the local history with the early Ais Native Americans or research the last naval battle of the American Revolution. I love walking down to the beach within minutes to watch a rocket illuminate the night sky, followed by a perfectly calculated booster landing. It is remarkable to be in the center of history and innovation.

Try finding something broken or a need in the city and figure out a way you can do your part to fix it. For some, that may be attending a fundraiser to help our local school. You could join efforts to expedite the progress to improve our Lagoon or beach by volunteering at a shoreline planting restoration project or clean-up. Once you get involved, you will never cease to be amazed when neighbors come together to make a difference.

Give it a go! Go find the things you love, find something remarkable and find what’s broken to take action. By embracing what we have here in this incredible 1.9 square mile city, you can find new reasons to say, “I love the City of Cape Canaveral.” Wes Morrison is a Council Member for the City of Cape Canaveral. 2019 Health First MAYOR’S FITNESS CHALLENGE ARTICLE COURTESY OF CITY OF CAPE CANAVERAL

The 2019 Health First Mayor’s Fitness Challenge officially kicks off Feb. 2, and #TeamCapeCanaveral is on the move to reclaim the title of “Most Fit City” in Brevard County.

The eight-week challenge runs from Feb. 2 to March 30. The municipality reporting the most minutes of physical activity during that time period will be named “Most Fit City.”

the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization and Brevard County Sheriff ’s Office. The morning wraps up with the “Tour de Cape” - a community bike ride through the City.

“Cape Canaveral’s goal in this year’s Health First Mayors’ Fitness Challenge is ultimately to bring the trophy back to The Space Between,” City of Cape Canaveral recreation coordinator and team co-captain Aaron Leyte said. “This is a fun competition for different municipalities around Brevard to compete for the title of ‘Most Fit City.’”

Participants can sign up for #TeamCapeCanaveral and track their minutes online, and there is no fee to be a part of the challenge. Team members can do any exercise they want, by themselves or in a group, as long as they track their minutes.

Cape Canaveral Mayor Bob Hoog will issue a special challenge each week to members of #TeamCapeCanaveral, in addition to special community

This year’s competition also includes Cocoa Beach, GrantValkaria, Indian Harbour Beach, Indialantic, Melbourne, Palm Bay, Satellite Beach, West Melbourne and Cocoa. The City of Cape Canaveral won two years ago in the inaugural Mayors’ Fitness Challenge, but lost last year to Cocoa Beach.

fitness events. Think bike rides, a walk through the park, a game of tennis or shuffleboard … he might even tell you to go fly a kite. “Joining #TeamCapeCanaveral shows city pride and a sense of community,” Leyte said. “Be a part of the fitness movement that is about to hit The Space Between!”

The City of Cape Canaveral is hosting one of the challenge’s premier kick-off events, “Movin’ in the City,” from 9 a.m. to noon on Feb. 2. This second annual event starts with a 3-kilometer community walk from City Hall to Cherie Down Park and back, and then moves to Xeriscape Park at 104 Taylor Avenue for a health and fitness expo, complete with demonstrations, games, giveaways and more, thanks to our partners at
