MAYOR’S
MESSAGE Hello Cape Canaveral Community! It’s now the month of May and that means we are entering the Summer of Space! While our Florida summers are world renowned for their long warm days, vacationing and beautiful beaches, we must also remember the threats they can bring to our City’s shore. June 1st is the start of hurricane season, and we want to make sure you are prepared! The City of Cape Canaveral wants to make sure all its residents are adequately prepared for whatever this hurricane season may bring our way. Make sure to have enough supplies to last you and your family at least a week (as well as your pets), have a full tank of gas for your car or generator or charge up your electric vehicle, consider having a weather radio, have a first aid kit, be up to date with all needed medications and have an evacuation plan ready. Being prepared is a KEY PART of being resilient. As more storms and challenges come our way the City is preparing for the future through the drafting of a Vulnerability Assessment via a grant awarded to the City in 2018 from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Florida Coastal Management Program (FCMP). This assessment is helping City staff to identify areas within our community where efforts in sustainability and environmental stewardship can be increased for the benefit of all current residents and future space betweeners. To get more info about this Vulnerability Assessment, resiliency, hurricane preparedness, and much more then sign up for The Weekly Update; a multi-page document that the Community Services Department compiles weekly from submissions by every City department, Canaveral Fire Rescue and the Brevard County Sheriff ’s Office (BCSO). To sign-up visit: www.cityofcapecanaveral.org/weekly_update!
As we head into May here are all the amazing events planned around the City: Friday Fest is May 3, 2019 from 6-10 p.m. on Taylor Avenue. Join the fun and meet your neighbors while listening to live music by Perfect Tuesday, enjoying bounce houses, food trucks, vendors + a sense of community! This one will be extra special as we will be showcasing the 20th Annual Student Art Show! In addition, the GRAND OPENING of Rover’s Space Doggy Spot in Xeriscape Park on Taylor will occur this night! WOW! Movie in the Park free viewing of Christopher Robin (Rated PG) on Friday, May 17, 2019 at 7 p.m. in Canaveral City Park (7920 Orange Avenue). Bring blankets + lawn chairs. There are kids activities until the movie starts and a concession stand serving burgers, hot dogs + snacks that benefit Space Coast Little League! Make sure to sign-up for the City’s weekly update so you can always know when events are occurring. Also follow the City’s official social media pages to be even more in the know! I’ll see you around the City!

COCOA BEACH HIGH SCHOOL VALEDICTORIANS HAVE GREAT THINGS TO SAY
Four students have been named valedictorians of the Cocoa Beach High School class of 2019! Valedictorians are students who have maintained a perfect 4.0 (Straight A) GPA for their entire high school career. This year’s valedictorians are Austin Rush, Jeremy Sabol, Brittany Stanley and Anna Stark. Each of these students have lofty goals after high school. Austin and Anna both plan to attend the University of Florida and major in Engineering. Jeremy’s choices are UF or George Washington University to study international affairs. And Brittany has been appointed to the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs to study astronautical engineering and become a fighter pilot. Each of these students has been involved throughout the school with activities such as National Honor Society, Environmental Club, Spanish Club, JROTC, GSA, SAC Board, Baseball, FBLA and much community service. When asked what their favorite memories of Cocoa Beach are, they included Homecoming, beating Satellite at various events, and celebrating the 50th anniversary of Cocoa Beach High School. Brittany mentioned her favorite memory was “pie-ing” Mr. Walters in the face for a fundraiser while Jeremy’s favorite memory was watching Mr. Walters getting the pie in the face! Just so you know, Mr. Walters raised an awful lot of money to earn that “pie in the face” designation! Each of our valedictorians has advice for our students. Anna says, “Try not to worry about every little thing – what you wear, what you got on that quiz – most of it won’t matter in ten years.” Jeremy said, “push yourself academically and work hard, but have fun with your friends and enjoy high school experiences!” Austin concurs, “Work smarter, not harder; but still work hard.” Brittany reminds students to “make sure to socialize with friends. It relieves a lot of stress.” When asked about last thoughts, Anna says, “GO GATORS!” Brittany and Jeremy both mention the amazing teachers they had throughout their years at Cocoa Beach and that they could not have made it through school without them. Cocoa Beach congratulations and the best of luck to ALL students in the Class of 2019!!

COASTAL STORM PREPPING Get Your Kit Together!
Hurricane prepping is more than just stocking up on bottled water and canned food… it’s an annual inventory on home and business storm readiness! The City of Cape Canaveral is on a barrier island, and if you’re new here, we are often the first to be evacuated during a weather emergency. Stressful, lastminute preparation is the absolute worst, so we encourage ALL residents to get an early start! Here are a few top things you can do RIGHT NOW to get started on preparing for the 2019 hurricane season which runs from June 1st to November 30th!
1. Check your renters, flood and homeowner’s policies; normal insurance doesn’t cover
2. 3.
4. 5. After the storm: Harbor Drive beach access
flooding (even hurricane generated rising water) and many policy changes or additions take 30 days to go into effect. Many residents aren’t prepared for their REALLY HIGH deductibles when a hurricane claim is necessary… some are upwards of $18,000. Tip: print a copy to put in your hurricane kit! Get alerted! Register for emergency notifications at www.embrevard.com by clicking on the “Alert Sign Up” button or text 32920 to 888777. Plan for an evacuation, it will happen. There are three types of evacuation shelters available to the public: Primary Evacuation Shelters, Special Needs Shelters and Pet-Friendly Shelters. a. Know someone with who needs special evacuation assistance to a shelter? Register them now ensure they will be contacted to be picked up: www.brevardfl.gov/EmergencyManagement/HaveAPlan/SpecialNeeds b. Plan for pets! i. Print and bring rabies vaccine + shot records, county tags, a carrier/leash for each pet, medicine/food/water, pet pads + cleaning supplies and comfort items for your pets ii. To find information on hotels that will accept pets, visit: 1. Pets Welcome - www.petswelcome.com 2. Bring Fido - www.bringfido.com Gather all the supplies now for boarding up your house- from plywood to screws, sandbags to tarps – hurricane supplies are hard to come by when a storm is looming. Do an inventory and start shopping! Make a house closing checklist: locate your water, gas and power shutoffs now; make sure you trade that information with your neighbors. That checklist should include your evacuation kit packing checklist too!
The City will start a Hurricane Tip campaign on our social media channels and as part of The Weekly Update to help residents with tips and reminders. For more information, please visit www.cityofcapecanaveral.org/hurricane. canaveral e x plorer

in the City of Cape Canaveral CONTRIBUTING WRITER: ZACHARY EICHHOLZ ASSISTANT TO THE COMMUNITY SERVICES DIRECTOR
For many, recycling is one of the first forms of environmental stewardship ever practiced. Reduce, reuse and recycle is a household phrase and bins out at curbsides is a norm. Recently though recycling in the US has undergone some major changes and cities across the country are scrambling to adapt. In 2017, China introduced its “National Sword” policy, which raised the acceptable contamination rate of all imported recyclables to 0.5%, a nearly impossible goal to meet according to US waste industry leaders. Since 1992, China has imported 45% of the world’s recyclables. America’s recyclables were no exception, with the vast majority finding their way overseas due to the fact that it was cheaper to ship them there than it was to process them here. Now cities in the US, unable to comply with China’s new contamination standard and having a lack of proper infrastructure, are being forced to cancel many recycling programs. The City of Cape Canaveral, through its waste contractor Waste Pro, still practices recycling. Recyclables picked up from your curbside are shipped to Waste Management’s Material Recovery Center in Cocoa where they are sorted, decontaminated as much as possible and bailed for reuse. This is the only such facility in Brevard County. It handles about 8,500 tons of material
every month, all of it contaminated with nonrecyclable items. An average shipment to the facility will see 25% to 35% contamination. The biggest contributor to this contamination is plastic bags, which should not be placed in your curbside recycling receptacles. If you decide to use plastic bags when shopping they should be returned to major box stores like Target or Publix and they should never be used to bag other recyclables. In an effort to promote better recycling habits and showcase modern recycling, the City conducted a Community Outreach Session called Trash Talk on March 29th. During the talk, the City unveiled new recycling signage and stickers that will be placed at all City facilities detailing what should and shouldn’t be recycled. Citizens should now only focus on recycling: clean and empty plastic bottles, clean and empty aluminum cans, flat non-shredded paper, newspaper and flat unsoiled corrugated cardboard with no food oils (as is commonly the case with pizza boxes). If you missed the Trash Talk or for information on the City’s trash and recycling services, please visit: www.cityofcapecanaveral.org/trash canaveral e x plorer
