Our City is changing – in a GREAT way! Our Community continues to be a growing source of pride for residents, and a place for visitors to tell their friends + family about! To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo Moon landing, the #SummerOfSpace continues with the City’s first public art mural unveiling at Friday Fest on September 6th! This is the City’s first permanent mural as part of the Public Art Program and the design was chosen based on the input of more than 700 residents. Speaking of improvements… have you seen all the space-themed traffic control cabinets around the City? How about the STEAM based rain barrels in the Kairos Community Garden? Have you had a chance to visit City Hall to see the Summer of Space throwback photo exhibit weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.? Did you know that Summer of Space is such a huge hit and brought our Community together in so many special ways that our City Council declared it an annual event?! We can’t wait to see space celebrated every summer in our great City! Looking to be more involved with the future of our City? We’d love to see you at our City Council Meetings! The next one is Tuesday, September 20th at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall. Don’t worry if you can’t attend; meeting video recordings are available solely online on our YouTube Channel (bit.ly/2KGJTGD) and City Council meeting agendas and meeting minutes (which include voting results) can be found online though our public records portal (Laserfiche) on cityofcapecanaveral.org.

Ready for another awesome Community event? This year’s local favorite annual Beach + Kite Fest will expand with Snazzy Jassy’s soft board surf competition on Saturday, September 14th (read more in this issue). Speaking of progress… have you seen the City’s new website? Staff has been working hard to make all City information accessible, and the resulting website is absolutely stunning. In the coming months, additional features such as online payments and form submissions will be possible! There is also a Community reporting portal in the form of an app that will allow residents and visitors to report their concerns from their smartphones directly to the appropriate departments within the City! Stay tuned!

Please contact the City staff to provide real answers to any questions you might have about ANY City initiatives, ordinances or potential changes. Staff is always happy to squash rumors and give factual information! I look forward to seeing you around the City! Thanks,

FROM THE DESK OF PRINCIPAL RENDELL COCOA BEACH JR/SR HIGH SCHOOL Hello Everyone, We have had a wonderful start to the new school year. Our returning students and our staff came back from summer vacation rejuvenated and refreshed. Our new students arrived with nervous excitement as they began their journey with us. We hit the ground running from the first day of school on August 12th and have not looked back. There is a positive atmosphere on campus and everyone is committed to having another great year. Our athletic teams have already begun competing in various fall sports. We hope to see you in the stands cheering on the Minutemen. I want to let you know that not everyone “took the summer off.” One of our students, Tessa Colaiacovo, participated in the Student Science Training Program at the University of Florida. This is a seven week residential research program for academically talented high school students interested in pursuing a career in the STEM field.
“ Tessa Colaiacovo Photo courtesy of CBHS
There is no doubt in my mind that this was a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity. I learned so much about chemistry and was able to interact with my peers and learn about them and their experiences. I am so thankful that I was able to participate in this type of work so early in life. ~ Tessa Colaiacovo
”
The application process is highly competitive and only a handful of students are selected. Tessa worked directly with UF professors, conducting research in the laboratory and in the field. She also took part in an Honors Seminar in Scientific Inquiry, attended a lecture series and was involved in leadership development activities. Tessa is a Senior in our International Baccalaureate Programme and is one of our top students. She certainly represented Cocoa Beach Junior-Senior High School well in Gainesville. We are very proud of what she has already accomplished and can’t wait to see what the future holds for her. CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Mark J. Rendell Principal of Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Zachary Eichholz, Sustainability Manager, City of Cape Canaveral
Ever wonder where our local weather forecasting comes from? The National Weather Service (NWS) office in Melbourne is the local weather office in charge of issuing all official daily forecasts and severe weather warnings for several East Central Florida counties, including Brevard, as well as 60 miles out into our coastal waters. The NWS is a branch of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which itself falls under the U.S. Department of Commerce. According to its mission statement, “...the National Weather Service provides weather, water, and climate data, forecasts and warnings for the protection of life and property and enhancement of the national economy.” There are 122 forecast offices situated throughout the U.S. Each one is staffed 24/7, 365 days a year. The Melbourne office currently has a staff of 22, 18 of whom are meteorologists, with several specializing in specific meteorological fields such as fire weather forecasting and tornadoes. The Doppler radar used at the facility is a critical piece of equipment that allows meteorologists to see the development of storms in real time tens of thousands of feet into the atmosphere.
Besides rain and hail, the radar is even powerful enough to see smoke plumes, insect swarms, flocks of birds and debris thrown aloft from possible tornadoes; which sometimes allows meteorologists to declare a tornado is on the ground without the need for storm spotters. Meteorologists also use satellite data to make forecasts for our local area, with data delivered every 30 seconds from the GOES-16 weather satellite, a state-of-the-art piece of technology first launched in November 2016 from the Cape. When it comes to relaying accurate and official storm or general weather information, the City relies on the NWS Melbourne office, as well as the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami, and shares via the City’s Twitter account. You do not need to have a Twitter account to view the City’s tweets and they are displayed on our website homepage. Whenever a tropical cyclone has formed in the Atlantic, the NHC issues tropical cyclone issue watches and warnings at least every 6 hours. The Melbourne office uses the NHC’s tropical advisories and warnings and applies its information to the forecast of our area.

GARDENING I N THEC I T Y CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Zachary Eichholz, Sustainability Manager, City of Cape Canaveral
On July 1, 2019, Florida’s new bill CS/SB 82: Vegetable Gardens went into effect.
The bill prohibits “a county, municipality, or other political subdivision of the state from regulating vegetable gardens on residential properties. Any local ordinance or regulation regarding vegetable gardens on residential properties is void and unenforceable. However, the bill does not preclude the adoption of a local ordinance or regulations of a general nature that do not specifically regulate vegetable gardens, including, but not limited to, regulations and ordinances relating to water use during drought conditions, fertilizer use, or control of invasive species.” The bill also defines the term “vegetable garden” as a plot of ground where herbs, fruits, flowers or vegetables are cultivated for human consumption.

The City of Cape Canaveral supports this bill, as it allows residents to become more engaged in the practice of urban agriculture, improves Community resiliency and falls in line with the City’s sustainability efforts. To optimize best practices and ensure safety while keeping sustainability a priority, the City will be releasing a set of suggested guidelines within the next few weeks to assist residents in their gardening efforts. Such suggestions may include: the recommendation of using eco-friendly fertilizers as a reminder to continue to adhere to the City and County’s fertilizer ordinances; efficient watering habits; garden bed plans used at the City’s Kairos Community Garden; and line of sight considerations for pedestrian and vehicle traffic safety.
It contains 12 beds, has a composting area, herb garden, a 500-gallon freshwater tank, six 50-gallon rain barrels for irrigation and even a Little Free Library and Pantry. Several of the beds at the garden’s southern end were made from debris found in the City produced by Hurricane Irma and have come to be called the “Irma Beds”. In 2018 some of the garden’s original beds were rebuilt using designs developed by a group of students at the Florida Institute of Technology for their own - and first - campus garden; called the Ethos Community Garden. With this cross collaboration, Cape Canaveral’s garden changed its name to Kairos, following the Greek naming lineage of local community gardens, which started with Ethos. This informal network is called the Community Garden Network of Brevard (CGNB). Kairos and Ethos are joined by two other local sister gardens, with Logos being at Satellite Beach’s Desoto Park and Pathos being at Cocoa Beach’s Ramp Road Park.
These guidelines will be released on the City’s website, Weekly Update and on all official City social media platforms. Residents of Cape Canaveral are already no strangers to urban gardening. In 2016 the City established its first community garden at the corner of Columbia Drive and SR A1A, occupying a narrow stretch of land just north of Patriots Park.

COMMUNITY & CUL 2019 BEACH + KITE FESTIVAL BIGGER + BETTER
While no one ever needs an excuse to enjoy Cape Canaveral’s
beautiful beaches, this annual Community beach party is the best one we can think of—and this year’s event will be one that shouldn’t be missed! Despite getting canceled in 2017 due to hurricane Irma, this event has grown steadily each year and is swiftly becoming a favorite September tradition for many local families. So, what’s all the buzz? Well, it’s right there in the name—Kite Festival. Each year, City Staff and volunteers help kids assemble and decorate free kites and watch as they excitedly run down the beach to get them aloft. For many local kids, this event is their first experience building and flying their own kite and what a great, life-long memory for them to make in the City of Cape Canaveral! This year’s event is shaping up to be bigger and better than ever with the return of the kids’ sand sculpture contest, paddle 16

CAPE VIEW PLAYGROUND UPDATE The
much-anticipated new playground at Cape View Elementary will be open for business just in time for the new school year. The equipment installation was completed on Wednesday and the maintenance team from Brevard Public Schools finished the project off with several loads of fresh mulch. What a wonderful way to kick off a new semester! The successful completion of this project not only represents a victory for the school, but for the entire Cape Canaveral Community. As a municipality that is 100% vested in the quality of life amenities for its residents young and old, the City shared the cost of this project by granting the school $10,000 and facilitated several fundraising opportunities at City events.
In conjunction with the 2019 Beach + Kite Festival, a local young surfer will be hosting Snazzy Jassy’s Spongefest, the City’s first allages, beginners welcome and family friendly soft board surf competition. Just $25 to register, the main competition is broken down by age group and for an additional fee, contestants can join

BARRIER ISLAND PET SUPPLY COCOA BEACH MURAL PROJECT
WRITTEN BY: Doug Baker, Editor Cocoa Beach Explorer
25 N. ORLANDO AVE., COCOA BEACH, FL | 321-783-3200 | barrierislandpet.com
THE MURAL
THE PET STORE
If you have traveled south on A1A through downtown Cocoa Beach lately you may have noticed Barrier Island Pet Supply getting a bit of new “color”. Barrier Island Pet Supply’s colorful new storefront is one of the latest ventures in the 2019 Cocoa Beach Mural Project initiated by local artist Kole Trent. The mural’s colorful rainforest theme laden with tropical flora and fauna is a perfect fit for Barrier Island Pet Supply and this little slice of tropical paradise called Cocoa Beach.
Barrier Island Pet Supply has been in business in Cocoa Beach for 10 years. In May 2018, owners Lonnie Fessler and Deb Richardson, who have worked in the pet industry for over 15 years, felt they needed to be more easily accessible to locals, so they relocated the store from W. Cocoa Beach Causeway (SR 520) to downtown Cocoa Beach. Their 25 N. Orlando Avenue location is one of the few in downtown with dedicated customer parking (located on the south side of the building)— and it’s free!
The goal of Trent Art Gallery’s Cocoa Beach Mural Project, “…to make Cocoa Beach the next Wynwood Art District! This is our home and we would love to see it turned into a global art destination by adding beautiful murals all over the city.”
A local one-stop pet shop for your pet supply needs and a good dose of art therapy all in one location. Yet another reason to love Cocoa Beach!
If you haven’t yet had the opportunity to enjoy this latest piece of downtown art, do yourself a favor and stroll by— the detail will astound you.
