All activities at a high school eventually lead to graduation! Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School has so many fabulous and awe-inspiring graduation traditions including honoring those receiving the Minutemen Award, the ceremony itself, recognizing those serving our country, ceremonial Minutemen, etc. One fabulous tradition that the parents and community have provided for our students is Project Graduation. Project Graduation is a well-organized, adult-supervised, alcohol-free post-graduation party for high school seniors. The intent is to have a safe place for all graduating seniors to gather and enjoy each other’s company one last time, while taking part in various activities throughout the event and eating a lot of great food!!

Graduation

PROJECT

written by: Karyle Green, Ed.D., Principal, Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. HS

This year, the chairs for Project Graduation 2018 are senior parents Rebecca Pletcher, Sarah McAllister, Anne Marie Hughes, Deanna Greenwell and John Stremmel. They, along with many volunteer senior parents and students, have been working on the plans. Project Graduation relies solely on the fundraising efforts by parents, volunteers and students requiring an entire year of planning. The date for graduation is Friday, May 18. Project Graduation will begin around 11:00 p.m. at the Cocoa Beach Country Club. Once seniors check in, they are not able to leave until the end of the party, but

will have many things to do. There will be a photo booth, games, dancing, bingo with cash prizes, inflatables, basketball, air hockey and many other things for them to enjoy. Remember, the goal is to keep seniors safe and off the roads as well as offer them a memorable evening. This year’s celebration will also include LOTS of fantastic food donated by area restaurants. George Artz, owner of Coconuts on the Beach, is leading the effort to get restaurants to donate food for the students. To date, Project Graduation 2018 has raised $10,000 and is hoping to more than double this amount before April. The goal of $25,000 ALL goes directly to the students with minimal expenses to cover the

The largest portion of the money raised is used to purchase prizes for students who attend: laptops, printers, microwaves, televisions, refrigerators, a gaming system, fishing rod & reel, a bike, gift cards, etc. Students earn 1 ticket for every hour they volunteer for various Project Graduation events. Fundraising events have included Flamingo Flocking, Escape Room CB, Friday Fest, Winter Fest, Cocoa Beach ½ Marathon, Elks Sponsored Car Wash, Tree Burn at Shephard Park. You may have even seen some of our seniors earning their volunteer hours by selling baked goods or wrapping gifts. Project Graduation 2018 isn’t finished raising money for this year. MALIK’S

MESSAGE

FROM THE MAYOR

C O C OA B E ACH U P DAT E written by Mayor Ben Malik

Winter is in full swing, not sure if I am getting accustomed to these seemingly more frequent and longer cold blasts we are getting, but I was actually comfortable in shorts and long sleeve shirt in upper 50 degree temperatures the other day (the sun was out and no wind). I really cannot imagine being in the NE and certainly can understand why many seek our community during the winters. Let’s be patient with the extra traffic and welcome those seeking shelter from the artic blasts (they do help in supporting our local merchants and community)! One of the greatest things of our community is the generosity of the residents who are always ready and willing to assist others and improve our community. We have fed and housed utility linemen/ National Guard troops from all over the country during hurricanes, recently local charitable organizations and local residents (and our very own first responders) raised funds to ensure local families in need did not miss out on the Christmas holidays, homeless were fed/housed during the cold weather periods, beach cleanups were organized to help clean our beaches, sea oat plantings undertaken to assist in protecting our vital dunes from erosion, lagoon clean up efforts with trash removal, oyster mat planting efforts to restore water quality, support our local schools, library and playhouse with fundraisers for various clubs/athletic programs and capital projects. As some of you may know, Roosevelt Elementary has been in need of a new playground for some time, and the community rallied together to raise funds for a new playground for the school due to

8

school board budget constraints. This was a lot of different organizations, local businesses and ordinary residents coming together to raise the funds for the playground (the old one was literally rusting away and was a hazard..this is why municipal buildings should not be made of steel in this highly corrosive environment, steel is quick to rust and negates any short term savings). To keep costs down, the school board is allowing the contractor to get assistance from local residents with the build, please come out to Roosevelt Elementary and help our kids get a new playground March 2-4, 2018 (Saturday the 3rd will be the time most are needed). https://www.rooseveltpto.org/playground-1 Thank you to all the sponsors to help raise over $75,000! https://www.rooseveltpto.org/playground-sponsors This is truly an amazing community of generous people who care about the community and each other. No matter what the cause, our community comes to together to make it happen; I am so incredibly grateful to be part of such a caring community. Thank you for your support and allowing me to serve as your Mayor, please feel to contact me with any suggestions at bmalik@cityofcocoabeach.com or my cell at 321-794-6668.

WHAT TO DO If You’re Alone on

VALENTINE’S DAY By: Jim Warthen

L

et’s face it, not all of us will be shot with Cupid’s arrow on February 14th. Some of us will be spending some quality alone time on this fateful day, and for some, it won’t be the first time. Here are a few suggestions to keep you busy. Treat yo’self ! If you’re flying solo on Valentine’s Day, you don’t have to deal with any arguments over where to eat. Choose the fanciest place that you enjoy, then call and order takeout for two. Why for two if you’re alone? First, it saves you embarrassment at the restaurant, because instead of thinking that you’re a loner on the most romantic day of the year, the staff will assume that you’re picking up the food for a blissful night at home for two. And the best part? Now you have a meal for tonight, and a meal for tomorrow night! That’s double the amount of delicious meals that most people get for Valentine’s Day!

Try a new hobby Use the night to start a new hobby. But I don’t mean just anything. Make this something ridiculous that you’d never usually try out. Are you an avid outdoor adventurer? Grab some yarn from a craft store and try your hand at crochet. There are plenty of Youtube videos to get you started. Are you a homebody that loves watching Netflix? Go find the nearest hiking trail, beach, or lake, and see how many different bird species you can find. What’s that? You think crochet and birdwatching are “lame”? Well you’re the one trying to fill your alone time on Valentine’s Day, so let’s not get too judgmental here.

Go out to eat alone (hear me out)... First, book a reservation for two, preferably someplace you know will be busy. Be sure to keep checking your watch, each time looking a little more frantic. Be sure to catch the eyes of a few people around the restaurant as you do this. Keep checking the door. Once the server has taken your order, hang your dejected face into your hands and quietly sob to yourself. Hopefully, someone notices that you’ve been “stood up”, and offers to pay for your dinner, or better yet, offers you the number of a cute doctor friend that’s single. Worst case, you got a delicious meal, a bottle of wine, and went home happy. Best case, you got all of the above for free, and you got set up with a great date! Do your taxes This one goes out to the busy bees that just have to be productive all the time. If you’ve got an evening in which you know that your friends and family will be busy doing things with significant others, why not get your taxes done? It’s the perfect time of year, and you’ll be done way ahead of the deadline. And when someone asks how your Valentine’s Day was, here’s your response: “It was pretty intense, actually. It started out slowly, but by the end of the night, my head was a frenzy of emotion!”

Head to Walgreens For this one, you need to master your skill of looking like you’re browsing, but not actually buying anything. What you’re doing, is stealthily monitoring the candy and ice cream, and wine aisles. Look for people that are dressed in pajamas and/or sweatpants. Then, when you “conveniently” bump into them in the checkout line, you can strike up a conversation. Once you mention that “it’s funny that you have Scooby-Doo on your PJs, he was my favorite growing up!”, then you’re in. You’ve turned your solo evening into the “how we met” story.

Well, you’re welcome. These may keep you busy, and even help you find love on Valentine’s Day. But before I finish, I’ll leave you with one important warning if you’re single on Valentine’s Day. Do yourself a favor… and stay off of Facebook. Cocoa Beach Explorer

Cocoa Beach Spotlight

these are the people in your neighborhood

Dr. O.K. “Lance” Armstrong Dr. Lance Armstrong embodies the essence of humanitarianism through his efforts working with homeless veterans and active duty military personnel. It is a wonderful ability to be able to recognize and understand the struggle, pain and fear of those in need and to then be an active participant in reaching out a helping hand to alleviate those struggles. For someone like Dr. Armstrong, happiness is found in reaching out that helping hand and making someone’s life better than what it is. Florida born and raised, Lance attended Cocoa Beach High School, Brevard Community College and the University of Central Florida majoring in Physics. He was the U. S. Air Force ROTC Cadet Commander and received a U. S. Air Force Commission as a 2nd Lieutenant just two hours after graduation. He served as a Flight Instructor-Bombardier, stationed in California and Michigan, with global sorties to Guam, Egypt, and Korea. Numerous Higher Headquarters missions, awards and recognitions occurred including receiving several USAF medals and ribbons. As a six-year officer, Captain, he experienced the Reduction in Force in 1992, losing his career.

For 20 years, Armstrong Chiropractic has been dedicated to patient care, and community service. Since 2003, Lance has served as the Brevard County Chiropractic Coordinator for Stand Down, an annual event which aids homeless and struggling veterans in Brevard County. As a PCC (Port Orange Campus) Adjunct Professor (since 2011), he has also instructed PCC Interns in-the-field assisting homeless veterans.

In 2014, Dr. Armstrong’s focus turned to active duty military personnel. As an American Red Cross Volunteer DC at Patrick AFB Hospital, he treats all five DoD branches, works at hospital level integration, treats spinal injuries from all sources including combat related from duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. Lance is also a participating doctor in The Patriot Project, a grass roots movement to provide chiropractic care to all active duty military, their families, wounded warriors and all Gold Star dependents. As a participating doctor, he treats armed-service members at no charge. The Patriot Project, with adequate funding, plans to develop a USO-type chiropractic care tour, visiting military bases at home and around the world, including all active forward operating bases like those in Afghanistan and Iraq. For more information go to www.patriot-project.org

A B-52G crash/hard landing in the year previous resulted in a spinal injury which led Lance to Palmer College of Chiropractic (PCC) where he received spinal injury repair help from a PCC Doctor of Chiropractic. He graduated Palmer four years later in 1996, receiving the “Clinic Excellence Award” for his class. Lance’s clinic ownership started on the day (1/13/98) he received his Florida license.

Outstanding Service Award presented by Sheriff Wayne Ivey

Other organization memberships include Kiwanis, Honor Flight Guardian, and “Life Member” of VFW, American Legion and Rolling Thunder.

Don’t just take our word for it; here are a couple of patron’s unsolicited reviews from Yelp.com:

Ron Teixeira Trio performing at Heidi’s Jazz Club

16

“We accidentally discovered this gem a couple years ago, and I can’t believe we didn’t know about it before. I literally stopped in the street and said “what’s that music? and wandered into the classiest, most fun place

in Cocoa Beach nightlife. The live jazz every night, the INCREDIBLE cocktails and cozy atmosphere are everything you could want from a jazz club‌.â€? - Brenna P., Orlando, FL “Can words aptly describe the awesomeness that is Heidi’s Jazz Club? Probably not. [‌] The ambiance was very intimate: Jazz inspired artwork, cozy tables clothed in white tablecloths that were made ethereal under the black lights; the stage small but perfectly arranged and well lit. “I’m no connoisseur of German food, however, the jaeger schnitzel was quite delectable as was the trio of German salads served beforehand. “The music, by far, is the crown jewel of Heidi’s Jazz Club and Restaurant. I will be back again...and again...and again....â€? - Corinne J., Merritt Island, FL

Flowers with Meaning

Natural Aphrodisiac Foods

Love, passion, honesty, loyalty, happiness, infatuation, and romance… things we want to convey to our special someone on Valentine’s Day. A dozen red roses are not your only option this year. A little research and you can find the perfect flower to say exactly what you mean. FTD.com lists the following flowers as symbols of love and passion...perfect for Feb. 14th.

You’ve heard before that oysters and strawberries are aphrodisiacs, but what about some of these less known stimulating foods…..

Does the science hold true?

Watermelon According to sciencedaily.com, scientists say watermelon has ingredients that deliver Viagralike effects to the body’s blood vessels and may even increase libido.

Red freesias symbolize passion

Gladiolus symbolize infatuation By giving a gladiolus to someone, the giver sends the message “you pierce my heart” to the receiver, because of the flower’s pointed shape

Avocado Barbara Klein, professor of food and nutrition at the University of Illinois, told the California Avocado Commission that the fruit’s high levels of vitamin E could help keep the spark alive because of its role in maintaining “youthful vigor and energy level.”

Light purple lilac - first love Red chrysanthemums - love & deep passion Magenta lilacs - love & passion Red tulips - everlasting love Yellow irises - passion Purple calla lilies - charm & passion White chrysanthemums - loyalty & honesty Blue lilacs - happiness & tranquility Peonies – romance & a happy marriage

Pumpkin seeds Pumpkin seeds are high in magnesium. According to Dr. Oz, magnesium helps raise testosterone levels by making sure more enters the blood stream. Figs According to Dr. Diana Hoppe, founder of Amazing Over 40 Inc., figs have high levels of amino acids critical to increasing libido and boosting sexual stamina.

Gemstones of Love: Amethyst & Emerald St. Valentine, the patron saint commonly associated with love and marriage is linked with amethyst through a charm called St. Valentine's Key. It was typically a silver key often adorned with an amethyst or diamond inset. The key was given as a token of love and healing. The charm was said to unlock the heart of any who wore it or gave it.

SELLING BREVARD!

Emerald is the stone of successful love. It will infuse your relationship with loyalty and romantic bliss. It will also enhance unconditional love and strengthen your unity and stability.

Asparagus Asparagus is loaded with Vitamin E, considered one of the sex hormone stimulants, as well as potassium, needed for healthy hormone production. The Vegetarian Society suggests that three straight days of asparagus nibbling produces the most aphrodisiac effect.

KINKY BOOTS KINKY BOOTS is Broadway’s huge-hearted, high-heeled hit! With songs by Grammy® and Tony® winning pop icon Cyndi Lauper, this joyous musical celebration is about the friendships we discover, and the belief that you can change the world when you change your mind. Inspired by true events, KINKY BOOTS takes you from a gentlemen’s shoe factory in Northampton to the glamorous catwalks of Milan. Charlie Price is struggling to live up to his father’s expectations and continue the family business of Price & Son. With the factory’s future hanging in the balance, help arrives in the unlikely but spectacular form of Lola, a fabulous performer in need of some sturdy new stilettos.
