EDITOR’S LETTER Welcome to June! We are halfway through 2019, and the long, hot days have just begun! Buckle up, it’s going to be a warm one. Also, June 1st is the start of hurricane season. Start putting your kits together, so it doesn’t sneak up on you. Hopefully, you will be using everything up in the late Fall because we didn’t need that hurricane kit. Fingers crossed we have a quiet season. We would like to thank Health First for a couple great articles in this month’s issue. The first one is about hospital auxiliaries and the important roll they play in patients’ care and gives you some information on how you can become a volunteer. Next, Dr. Bishop gives us some great information on how to protect ourselves from the hot summer sun and help protect the planet too. Looking for something fun to do this summer with the family? Why not try doing an escape room? Check out my article about Escape Cocoa Beach. It’s a great idea during the summer. It gets you out of the house, gets the kids off the video games, it’s air conditioned, so you can beat the heat, and you must use your brain! Check them out.

We would like to take a moment and thank Dr. Green for writing about what is going on at Cocoa Beach Jr/Sr High every month. Check out her last article in this month’s issue. We wish her well with her promotion. Remember, if you are a non-profit organization having phone: an event or fund raiser 321-759-6064 to send us the information, and we will try and include it in our Community Corner. Have it to us by the 5th of the previous month to be included. email: info@cocoabeachexplorer.com

FROM THE MAYOR
MESSAGE C O C OA B E ACH U P DAT E
Indulge me in telling a tale of a surf trip of long ago with one of my college classmates and fellow surfers, Andrew Jackson (real name by the way, British born and fellow UF Class of ‘86 graduate) to Costa Rica. It was the summer of 1987, and my classmate and fellow surfer Andy was working as a producer of a local TV station in Miami. Andy called me up and said let’s go to Costa Rica. Andy’s mother owned a travel agency and made all of the arrangements. We were stoked to go in the middle of the flat season here in Florida! For the younger folks, there were no cell phones (only super-expensive car phones), no Internet, no GPS, no surf cams, etc. We packed our surfboards in cardboard appliance boxes with bubble wrap all around leaving Miami for Costa Rica flying on Costa Rican airline LACSA (open bar and real food/ silverware on the flight!). We arrived in San Jose, Costa Rica, only to find out our surfboards were not on the plane. Stuck in a foreign country, neither of us spoke Spanish (Although everyone thought I spoke Spanish thanks to my tan. My French language skills helped as it a Latin-based language.), and we managed to make a friend at our hotel who didn’t speak English. Communicating was comical using a pocket language dictionary, Spanglish/French and sign language! Our new friend took us to the Arenal volcano (an active volcano until 6

2010) to show us his beautiful country and some fabulous restaurants with the best seafood we ever ate. Costa Ricans are the some of the most hospitable people you will ever meet! We would have never seen the volcano if our boards had arrived, so it all worked out. After two days, our boards arrived and we took a public bus (you haven’t really traveled if you haven’t taken a public bus in Central America!) decorated like a Christmas tree with bright colors to the coast! We survived a hair-raising drive through the mountains on a speeding bus with just a tiny guardrail between us and imminent death below. Upon arrival, we immediately checked into the hotel at Playa Jaco and caught some shoulderhigh waves that afternoon. At first light, we caught glassy, head-high waves and surfed till our arms could not move anymore. The hotel had a/c, a warm pool, and a great restaurant with local, farm-fresh food and seafood (and plenty of ice-cold Imperial beer). The mountains and lush greenery were an absolute splendor to take
in from the ocean and enjoy with a friend. We hitched a ride with a local farmer the next day to Playa Hermosa (better hollow wave) with a cool black sand beach. Sometimes the adventure of old school traveling just cannot be replaced (no surf cams, Internet, cell phones, etc.); it is certainly the road less traveled.

Go explore! PS-Andy is alive and well living the dream with his wife and two children in Oahu, Hawaii, (he is President of KITV an ABC TV network), plays in a rock band, still surfs—albeit, it is a half mile paddle out! Thank you for your support and allowing me to serve as your Mayor. Please feel to contact me with any suggestions at bmalik@cityofcocoabeach.com or my cell at 321-794-6668.

HOSPITAL AUXILIARIES
a Critical Part of Compassionate Care CONTRIBUTED BY: Health First
A couple of years ago, Allan Gair threw on a Santa Claus suit and began rounding in the Emergency Department of Health First’s Holmes Regional Medical Center. “I walked past room 63, and there was a mother there with a little boy,” the hospital’s Auxiliary President recalled. “She said, ‘Can you come in and talk to him?’ ” Gair did, and on the way out, the boy’s mother thanked him. “She said, ‘You made his day,’ ” a teary eyed Gair said. “And I said, ‘No – it’s the other way around.’ ” Health First is looking for more Allan Gairs. Each of the four hospitals in the Integrated Delivery Network (IDN) hosts an auxiliary, with volunteers helping to create a compassionate, high-quality environment for patients. The auxiliaries have contributed millions of hours of valuable service, as well as raised money to help finance hospital building projects, funding scholarships for students in the healthcare field, purchasing new equipment and sponsoring community healthcare-related programs. Marcia
Phillips,
Manager
of
Volunteer Services and Customer Experience at Holmes Regional, described the Auxiliary as a “phenomenal gift to the organization.” “I can tell you, there are times we look around and say if our volunteers were not here, we would be in a world of hurt,” Phillips said. Volunteers can give as little as three to four hours of their time a week. Anyone interested is encouraged to call the volunteer coordinator. “This group brings the best of humanity to all we serve every single day,” said Leonne Sherr, Manager of Volunteer Services at Health First’s Cape Canaveral Hospital. “Their positive impact on our customers, patients and staff is priceless.” Joelle Boccabella, Manager of Volunteer Services at Health First’s Viera Hospital and Palm Bay Hospital, said volunteers are important to security, food services, maintenance and more. “If you have a passion for helping others or desire to give back to the community, we have a place for you,” she said.

It’s No Mystery Why Escape Rooms Are So Popular WRITTEN BY: Doug Baker, Editor, Cocoa Beach Explorer
You have 60 minutes. You and your team of private investigators must solve a decadesold cold case regarding the location of the millions of dollars stolen in the 1950 Great Brinks Robbery in Boston. Your team has finally located the outdated apartment of the prime suspect, now an old man, but the bigger mystery still remains—where did he hide the money? The back story of Escape Cocoa Beach’s 2325 Tremont Street is based on actual events that took place in January of 1950. Game players find themselves immersed in a story world filled with outdated décor, old furniture and period magazines clearly setting the scene of a suspect holed up for years since his 1950s heist.
Room Adventures at Escape Cocoa Beach
If you are an escape room newbie, you will probably find yourself with no idea where to begin. Just start trying things: open drawers, look for locks, look under/inside items, look for patterns. Know this, the key to successfully escaping any game room is communication. You must communicate with your team. Find a clue or pattern, shout it out! Find something but you’re not quite sure how it plays into the game, shout it out! It’s amazing how each team member, given the same clues, will think and put things together differently. JAIL BREAK

As We Kickoff The Season Of Outdoor Fun, Remember To Protect Yourself From The Sun CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Larry Bishop, MD Health First Dermatology
As we head into the peak season for outdoor fun, we Floridians deserve a pat on the back. We are, for the most part, worldly wise as to the dangers the sun poses to our health, and we protect our skin at a much higher rate than our northern friends who come to our sunny beaches to have fun, only to get that cooked-lobster, bright red hue.
We also deserve credit for being among the more environmentally conscious states, and as the issues of the environmental dangers of some sunscreen ingredients have hit the news, we have started to adapt. We want to protect our skin, but the environment as well! Here are some great guidelines to help you protect your skin and the planet, as well in the upcoming “Fun Season”:
• • • •
• • •
When possible, avoid the peak hours of sunlight, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wear sun-protective clothing such as a rash guard or any one of the many commercially available sun shirts, which will provide sun protection and limit the amount of sunscreen needed to protect your skin. Remember to protect your eyes, and to account for reflected light off the beach and the water. Avoid the sunscreens that contain Oxybenzone or Octinoxate. Each has been shown to stress the highly sensitive coral reefs, as well as other sea life. Hawaii, Key West and some beaches on the Yucatan peninsula have passed measures to ban these ingredients. Other ingredients are likely to follow, including Titanium Dioxide, homosalate, octisalate and octocrylene. Don’t forget your lips. Protect your head as well by wearing a wide-brimmed hat. Finally, don’t forget to reapply your environmentally friendly sunscreen every two hours. Otherwise, the sun, sand and sweat will degrade your sunscreen and you will end up looking like our lobster-like northern visitors.

THANK YOU FOR SHARING THE TREASURE OF COCOA BEACH Beginning June 3, Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School will have a new principal. Dr. Mark Rendell will be joining the staff this summer taking the helm of the 39th ranked high school in the state of Florida!! My time here has been wonderful. I believe Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School is the treasure of Brevard County. Our students have incredible talent and aspirations for the future. I know that you know this, but we have future academics, athletes, musicians, actors and actresses, those who will serve in the military, writers, thinkers, scientists, historians, future business leaders, homemakers, parents and legislators walking our hallways. I know that whatever our students choose as their path, they will find success.

without the hours you share with us. We have parents who take the time to support their children by attending events, meetings and celebrations. All of our parents want what is best for their child. By their desire, all of our students succeed. They demand a top notch education for our students and we all do our best to comply.
I have enjoyed meeting many, many parents. We have tremendous volunteers who work for the benefit of clubs and teams and to help out teachers and staff. Our school couldn’t survive 16
And what we wouldn’t do without the community! If it wasn’t for SAC members, Elks, Rotary, Kiwanis, Cocoa Beach Women’s Club, our churches, DAR, Take Stock in Children mentors, local businesses our students would miss out on so much. They provide for us in so many ways and I want to thank them for everything they do for our kids!

And then, there’s the teachers and staff. Cocoa Beach has some of the best teachers in the county and state. We also have the top staff. I see dedication and hard work every day from those who share their knowledge and provide the learning opportunities that our students get to experience. That’s why Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School remains and “A” school each year. I am confident we will continue to strive for excellence. Thank you for sharing the treasure of Cocoa Beach!
In large part due to the support from our sponsors and the CB community, the Boys Program accomplished a few major feats this season. Championship Game win over Viera
Undefeated Boys JV Team
Firstly, the Boys Varsity Team finished a wildly successful season with a 15-3 record and won the programs' first District Championship. The team scored 300 goals this season while only letting 130 against and boasted 3 Senior Players on the All Cape Coast Conference Team. Also, our Boys JV Team completed an undefeated season, finishing 12-0.

Children’s VOICE
As a member of the Facebook Space Coast Moms’ Swap, I view a multitude of posts about everything under the Florida Sun. One recurring theme is how to entertain teens who come for a visit to the Space Coast, especially when the weather is not cooperating for outside activities. Below, I’ve compiled a list of indoor and outdoor activities that can help keep your teens
