EDITOR’S LETTER

CONTACT INFO

Seems like just yesterday I was sitting down to write this letter for the October issue. Time truly is moving quickly. Fall is in full swing, and this is Tracee’s favorite time of year. What’s not to love? Cooler weather, college football, and pumpkin spiced EVERYTHING! Fall decorations are going up, and we are looking forward to Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a perfect time to reflect on all the positive elements in our lives. I give thanks for the fact most of the businesses that were affected by Hurricane Irma are opened back up and functioning as normal. Our fingers are crossed Re/ Max Solutions and Twin Finnigan’s get back open quickly! I also give thanks for this great community that supports each other! In the October issue we asked everyone to help support the local businesses which were hit hard by being closed for the storm, and I have seen and heard that everyone is getting out and supporting our local business neighbors. Thank you! Let’s keep it going and not forget there are great businesses in the Banana River Shopping Center which will be open during the Publix remodel.

email: Dougbaker34@aol.com Traceepbaker@gmail.com

As I conclude this letter for November, I can’t phone: help but look ahead to 321-759-6064 December; it both scares me and makes me happy all at the same time. It scares me because another year is almost done, but makes me happy because I love the Christmas holiday season! Tracee and I hope you all have a great Thanksgiving. Talk to you in December!

STUDENTS S E RV E T H E I R CO M M U N I T Y

written by: Karyle Green, Ed.D., Principal, Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. HS

I am excited to begin a monthly entry into the Cocoa Beach Explorer to highlight some of the amazing activities and events that our awesome students and teachers take part in throughout the year. Sometimes it’s hard to get the good news out and this opportunity, presented by the Bakers, seemed like a perfect way to share our successes. I will focus this issue on the service our students provide. Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School was recently recognized as a 2016-17 Five Star School by the Florida Department of Education. CBJSHS has received this recognition for many years running. The Five Star School Award is given to schools who have exemplary community involvement. The award was created by the FLDOE Commissioner’s Community Involvement Council to recognize that community involvement is fundamental to student success. Schools are obligated to accrue volunteer hours equaling at least twice the amount of the school’s enrolled students. Service is the essence of the award. Cocoa Beach shows its community pride through service in so many ways. One way is through the Students in Action Club sponsored by Dr. Steve Primus. Through regional competition, Cocoa Beach Jr/Sr High School was chosen by a select panel of judges to represent Central Florida at this year’s National Ceremony of the Jefferson Awards in Washington DC. During the 2016-2017 school year the Cocoa Beach SIA team lived their vision statement of making a lasting impact upon the lives of others and their belief in service above self. One of the projects they did last year included raising funds for a young girl in Uganda through ChildFund to provide her with food, clean water, education and health services. Another was creating a petting zoo for children with special needs. And yet another was raising more than $1,400.00 for their annual “Secret Santa” project providing 10 of their peers with Christmas gifts they would not otherwise receive. The team also collected and donated 200 lbs. of food, 700 lbs. of recycling, over 146 toys and gifts, 500 books, as well as serving 294 meals, and volunteering their

6

time at local beach clean ups and with Habitat for Humanity. Through all their efforts last year the Cocoa Beach SIA team tracked over 23,000 (that’s THOUSAND) service hours in their school which had a financial impact of over $543,000 to the community. Another group that is connected throughout the community through service is our Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC). Led by LTC James Desjardin and 1SGT Kevin Staddie, the CBHS JROTC is seen almost weekly throughout our community presenting the colors at school, civic, veteran or other community events or participating in beach clean-up or Coconuts 5K run! You can always recognize the CBHS JROTC’s sharply dressed cadets proudly sharing their time around Cocoa Beach and Brevard County. Our middle school MYP program supports an organization called We Help Too. We Help Too provides prosthetics to youth ages 2-18 around the world who have lost a limb. Organizations and clubs raise funds for We Help Too to pay for those prosthetics and the research. With support from our Rotary Club or Cocoa Beach and the Cocoa Beach Elks, to date, students at Cocoa Beach have raised enough money to purchase 18 limbs for those in need. I could go on and on about how our students serve the Cocoa Beach community. There are so many more students who participate in so many more clubs providing service throughout Cocoa Beach. Whether it’s the above-mentioned groups or our National Honor Society, Key Club, Green & Growing Club, or the newly formed AOK (Acts of Kindness) club, I hope I’ve shared with you a flavor of the good things our students do for others!

Nelly was born with a deformed leg that caused her a great deal of pain and would not allow her to walk. Doctors decided the only way for Nelly to lead a normal life would be to amputate her leg and fit her with a prosthetic. Nelly is now able to walk to school for the first time in her life.

Tell me about the Cocoa Beach Art Show? It’s a great event over the Thanksgiving holidays in Downtown Cocoa Beach. We will have talented artists, great bands, awesome food and beverages. It kicks off with the Turkey Trot on Thursday morning and just flows through the whole weekend. We will also have a great kids section for them to create their own art, and the Cocoa Beach Fire Department will be making their legendary chili! How long has this event been going on? That’s a good question. The Cocoa Beach Art Show started in the very early 60’s and then morphed into the Space Coast Art Festival. There was an issue with the city and the Festival back in early 2014, and they decided to move that show out to the Port. A small group of residents and business owners got together and started working on having some kind of a festival over Thanksgiving weekend. We put our first show on and never missed a show. So, the short answer is either over 50 years, or this will be our 4th year.

from the city of Cocoa Beach including the CB Fire Department and Police; I cannot thank those groups enough. The city really backs us up. The new improvements to the downtown have helped, although it was a challenge last year during construction.

That must have been an interesting first year, what was that like? Crazy, tough, hard, man it was something. We were super lucky to have Cindy Kelley, who for many years worked for the other art festival, and she really knows what she is doing. We had others quit and walk away, but the first group stuck together and the residents stepped up thru my Facebook page Wake Up Cocoa Beach and financially helped put it on. I will never forget people coming into my office or seeing me out at local establishments and handing me $10, $20 and $100. I will never forget that Saturday morning up on the stage introducing the band with the ocean at my back and the street filled with artists and people. How has the event improved in the past 4 years? We know what to expect now and know what it takes. We have been blessed with unbelievable weather and incredible support

So it sounds like a lot more than just an art show? It really is. It’s a reunion every year of CB High School classmates who come in for Thanksgiving. It’s a way for the downtown establishments to prosper in the off season. It’s for families and everyone, it’s just a really cool event.

THANKSGIVING WEEKEN an interview with Art Show Who are the other people behind the scenes? Well, I mentioned Cindy Kelley. She is in charge of securing the artists and taking care of them and wears many other hats. Courtney Tumulty is in charge of our bands and has secured another tremendous line up this year. Tim Tumulty is in charge of logistics, communication with the city and is also one hell of a garbage man. Patti Drake takes care of the money and beer and wears a few other hats. Kenne Wells is in charge of our food vendors, and Nicole Madeaux is in charge of our volunteers. What do you do? I just get too much of the credit. I run the

meetings, give some input, work with the city, and during the show you might see me working with the bands, emptying garbage, filling beer bins, whatever it takes. So you’re telling me to get downtown Thanksgiving weekend? I am telling you to show up Wednesday night for the Kickoff/Volunteer party at Casablanca, wake up and get into the Turkey Trot on Thursday morning, get out Friday night and come to the street party with

2 great bands, then on Saturday and Sunday come out and see some very talented artists, spend a little money, eat a little chili at the fire department and just have a great time. You will see old friends and neighbors, and find me I will buy ya a beer.

The Publix remodel is underway, and we all are keeping an eye on the progress the construction crews are making each time we drive by the Banana River Shopping Center. Just because you see a green-tarped fence doesn’t mean the entire shopping center is closed, so the next time you are taking a drive maybe just take a turn into the shopping center. There are GREAT Cocoa Beach businesses in there that are still open!

MALIK’S

MESSAGE

FROM THE MAYOR

C O C OA B E ACH U P DAT E

Life marches on as Fall approaches (my favorite time of year to enjoy the cooler weather and less crowded beaches of our shores). I am grateful to be amongst the living this month to walk my daughter, Megan, down the aisle as she gets married on November 4th and becomes Mrs. Luke Crescenzi (a day of mourning...just kidding Megan and Luke, Mom and I are thrilled to gain a fine young man as our future son-in-law!). Recently an incident occurred on Friday CBHS football game night involving a couple of CBHS students in a bad automobile (4 door truck) accident that hit a column in front of the Cocoa Beach Country Club. The students sustained some pretty serious injuries (one being airlifted to the hospital). I am extremely thankful that both students will recover and no one was killed (great job CB first responders)! My wife and I were going out to dinner and saw the Cocoa Beach patrol car and Cocoa Beach fire trucks rushing down Minutemen Causway with lights/sirens blaring; our hearts jumped a beat as we knew our son, Chris (senior at CBHS), was at the football game that night and prayed that no one was injured. Before we jump to conclusions as to causation and what factors were involved, let us be mindful that we were all young once and as such we all have made mistakes along the way. Let us make sure we learn from such mistakes and make better choices going forward. Use this lesson as an opportunity to talk with your children about being a responsible driver. I would prefer high school kids didn’t experiment with alcohol, but from a pragmatic point knowing most of us did it during our youth, we can at least ensure our children are responsible and don’t ever drink and drive or get into an automobile with a driver who has been drinking. The beauty of all this technology readily available on our phones today is the simple use of ride-sharing apps such as Uber, Lyft, and Curb. Our family had a candid discussion about never drinking and driving and my son has Uber on his phone (tied to our credit card), and I told him if he ever needs to use it to avoid a bad situation just use it; we are happy to pay for the safe ride home! I encourage all parents to have these candid conversations with their children and ensure their children have a ride-share app on their phones. We can replace automobiles, property, etc., our children are not replaceable. November has a flurry of fun activities to enjoy. I serve on the board of Shaka, Surfers Helping Kids (surfershelpingkids.org for more info), and we will be having a very different kind of surf

contest: Boom-Shaka-Loco Silly Surf Social on Sat. 11/18 (Fischer Park from 8am-3pm) to raise money for our next humanitarian project in El Salvador (no entry fee; relying upon sponsors and by selling contest shirts/collecting donations). There will be whacky surfing events for all ages such as the Brutal Noodle, the Crazy Raft Rider and the Finless Frenzy. There will also be some fun non-surfing events (e.g. sandcastle building contest). Cocoa Beach Main Street Downtown Sip-n-Stroll (Sat. 11/4, I may be busy...), KBB Riverfest (CB Country Club, 11/18 5-8:30 pm), Cocoa Beach Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot, Cocoa Beach Art Show (11/2426), come out and enjoy all of the festivities! Thank you for your support and allowing me to serve as your Mayor, please feel free to contact me with any suggestions at bmalik@ cityofcocoabeach.com or my cell at 321-794-6668. written by Mayor Ben Malik

Rising Tide - Port Canaveral’s Gastro Pub Delightful Food & Relaxed Dining

Port Canaveral’s newest dining establishment, Rising Tide Tap & Table, has joined the ranks within the growing trend of gastro-pubs with a delectable menu and a fun, casual dining atmosphere.

hard at work developing a few unique handcrafted cocktails such as their Gin Basil Smash and Lavender Lemonade.

Gary Foreman and Fishlips owner Rich Hensel partnered to open Rising Tide in the building which was once Auddino’s Italian Bakery. In a down-to-the-studs remodel, they converted the former structure into an exceptional, laid-back dining experience.

Rising Tide combines comfortable dining and creative cocktails with an unrivaled panoramic view. Out the northern windows, cruise ships can be seen sailing by,

From the moment you enter, the selectively eclectic décor speaks to the restaurant’s Space Coast roots. NASA inspired chandeliers and artwork like The Trashy Tarpon, made from debris picked up along the Space Coast beaches, combine with the ocean blues and sunset reds of the dining room walls to generate a unique décor which gives that “this is our community” feeling. The atmosphere may be relaxed, but the food is thrilling; think comfortable pub food with a delightfully delicious twist. Generally, there is a focus on locally-grown, fresh ingredients which change according to the season. Rising Tide’s scratch kitchen, led by Executive Chef Jeff Kainz, takes everyday ingredients and prepares them in extraordinary ways to catapult the dishes from expected to incredible culinary delights. And then…. there’s the bar! Beer taps, 60 of them to be exact, welcome you with a changing array of craft beers with onethird of those taps dedicated to locally brewed Florida beers. The friendly and attentive bar staff are quite happy to help you discover your next favorite brew. Looking for a libation other than beer? Almost Edible Gourmet Candles Not just candles but works of “heart”

an interview with master candle baker Will Therrien When did you start making candles? When I was 13 there was a shop in the town I lived in that I visited often. One day I was in the shop, followed my nose and discovered them making candles in the back room. As most kids do, I began playing 20 questions, and they soon sent me on my way with a slab of wax, fragrance, dye and wicks. I turned my mom’s stove into a candle factory, and immediately set it on fire. She moved me into the basement, and the rest is history. A month later, I was selling candles back to the same hippies who had gotten me started on my first candles. How do you make them look and smell so realistic? Well, I make molds from the real thing. Strawberry molds are made from real strawberries and peppermint patty molds are made from real peppermint patties. I “cook” my candles in a kitchen using regular restaurant utensils. Getting the perfect 222 N. Atlantic Ave., Cocoa Beach

look is a process of elimination and experimentation; it may be hot water, cold water or even hot air. The scents are hand blended from a variety of oils which I blend to get the perfect scent. It took me three years to get the perfect pancake scent.

Do you do special orders? I do! The cupcakes are popular for weddings. Another popular item is strawberry champagne in wedding glasses. I do wholesale orders too.

Is it time consuming to make such realistic works of art with wax? Some are harder than others. The banana split is the hardest candle I make. There are 17 stages to making it. The cupcakes are one of the quicker candles to make.

Tell me a little about author Jaimie Engle and the Wick Books candles you create for her. I have created scents to go along with three of Jaimie’s stories. The concept is to light your candle while reading the books for an immersive experience.

How many different “flavors” do you have? Over 150 flavors and 600 varieties. Flavors include everything from fruits scents like strawberry and peach to savory scents like pancakes with maple syrup. I make seasonal flavors too: cranberry chutney, banana nut bread, gingerbread and eggnog are just a few.

We’ve heard that you support local charities. What charity are you currently supporting? I try to spread my support throughout the community by donating to different charities each month. For the month of November, I am donating a portion of sales to the Cocoa Beach VFW Post 10148 Homeless Veterans Initiative.
