EDITOR’S LETTER

This issue is our 2nd anniversary issue! On one hand, it’s hard to believe this issue signifies two years of doing this monthly magazine, but on the other hand, it feels like we have been at this for a lot longer than two years. We are still having fun and love working with everyone here in our great town. We thought it would be fun to revisit an article which was done in our very first issue on Wake Up Cocoa Beach (WUCB). WUCB is a private Facebook page hosted by Steve Romano for anyone who lives or used to live here. We let Steve give us an update on Wake Up Cocoa Beach and how it has changed over the past two years. Last month’s issue had a “first” for Cocoa Beach Explorer. We had a marriage proposal! I am proud to announce Lisa Capaz said “YES” to Rick Sosa. See, our ads really do work!! The August issues has some great articles for you. We caught up with Lonnie at Barrier Island Pet Supply and learned about their new storefront mural and also what’s new inside the store. We also have a couple great articles shared by our advertisers. First, Dr. Hendrix shares some information about myopia in children and second is an article about smart financial moves for every stage of life from Brad Bernkrant at Edward Jones. Lastly, Kenne Wells shares information regarding Cocoa Beach Main Street.

I would like to take a moment to congratulate Cocoa Beach Junior/ Senior High School on another “A” grade for the 2018-2019 school year. We are all proud of our students and staff. Make sure to mark your calendars for another NKF Surf Festival happening at Cocoa Beach Pier from August 30th – September 2nd.

email: info@cocoabeachexplorer.com

I’m going to wrap this letter up with a special phone: “Thank You!” to Ben Malik. As 321-759-6064 previously mentioned, this is our 2nd year anniversary, which means Ben Malik has been providing us his Malik’s Message for two years now. He always sends them no matter what other things he is dealing with in his personal life/work/mayoral duties. We know you are a busy man, and we greatly appreciate your monthly input for the Cocoa Beach Explorer. THANK YOU! Talk to you in September.

MALIK’S

FROM THE MAYOR

MESSAGE C O C OA B E ACH U P DAT E

Hope everyone enjoyed the fantastic astronaut parade to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11! It truly made me proud to be part of this community with our rich heritage of space, and the resurgence of our space programs points to an even brighter future. The Apollo astronauts and all the support staff/companies involved showed the entire world what our country is capable of if people work together for a common goal. The whole world was watching, and we as humans have to realize we are one human race and one planet! My sister actually has all three Apollo 11 astronauts’ autographs she got during the Giantstep-Apollo 11 Presidential Goodwill Tour (24-country tour in October 1969). We are fortunate to live in the greatest nation of the world and be part of this rich legacy leading the world in technology and innovation! With NASA opening to the commercial space sector, we are seeing an unprecedented amount of activity and investment in our region! Competition is heating up in this sector with all-new technology being created such as reusable rockets, satellite-based Internet, and even space tourism! The National Aerospace Forecast calls for 56 launches every year by 2021 and a return to manned spaceflight from the Kennedy Space Center later this year in 2019! Companies such as SpaceX, Blue Origin, One Web, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, ULA, Firefly, and others are making millions of dollars in investments and thousands of engineers are coming to our region! Florida used to own 100% of the global commercial launch market before the majority of this market went overseas (Europe/Russia). North America is now predicted to dominate the commercial launch market by 2024. It is a market with an estimated value of $2.5 Billion (with a B!!). Our region has the infrastructure in place and technological assets to be at the center of this new space race!

As a barrier island, we are limited in growth capacity and can look at smart growth best practices such as redevelopment of older buildings to incorporate more environmentally friendly designs with low impact stormwater systems, greater energy efficiencies and safer modern construction methods (there was no stormwater plan in the 1960s!). Given the roughly 1,000 less residents we have in full-time population from 2000 to present, we can certainly look to attract some of these new engineers and their families to our community and ensure our community will thrive in the decades to come! Hurricane season is entering peak season. Have a plan and make your preparations now. Here is a link to a great kit for storm season: https://www.brevardfl.gov/EmergencyManagement/BuildAKit Happy Birthday to my wife and best friend, Kelly (August 17th)! COCOA BEACH MAIN STREET Supporting the Economic Health and Vitality of Our Downtown Area

CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Kenne Wells, Executive Director of Cocoa Beach Main Street

Welcome to downtown Cocoa Beach. “Where Downtown Meets the Ocean.” Cocoa Beach Main Street is a 501c-3 not for profit organization; our purpose is to advocate for the economic health and vitality of our downtown. This also includes issues that could possibly affect residents and visitors. Working in partnership with the City of Cocoa Beach, we promote and create events that bring crowds to our downtown. These events are designed to introduce and bring recognition to our eclectic blend of downtown businesses and also be fun for the community and visitors. The third Friday of each month Friday Fest hits Minutemen Causeway. The evening is filled with live music, a variety of vendors, food vendors, a kids’ free art tent, a scavenger hunt, beer, wine and dancing. Yes, dancing in the street and having fun is a requirement! Events are organized and created through the Promotions Committee. If you are interested in participating in our Friday Fest as a vendor, we encourage you to visit our website www.mainstreetcocoabeach.com and review the vendor information and application. We love having local artists and businesses showcase their products. The community support is invaluable and also appreciated. CBMS has other committees, working in 8

conjunction with the Promotion Committee, that benefit our downtown businesses and community. We welcome anyone that wants to volunteer. There are many areas that volunteers are needed such as social media, website, design, organization, promotions, economic vitality and Business Watch. We like having “boots on the ground” volunteers that visit businesses and keep them informed on the upcoming events. There is something and someplace for anyone to share their talents in volunteering. Our new office location is in the new parking garage. We will be happy to offer any brochures from our business members. Other information offered will be a map and any other general information regarding downtown Cocoa Beach. It will also be the meeting place for Guided Mural Walks (we hope to start offering them in the fall). We are in the process of extending the boundaries of Main Street to include all businesses south of the Cocoa Isles intersection down to 1st Street South. The Space Coast Credit Union will also be included in our boundaries. We encourage the businesses located within those boundaries to join Main Street and be part of the revitalization of downtown Cocoa Beach. For more information contact Executive Director, Kenne Wells at kenne.cbms@gmail.com

Soon, we will be announcing the location and date of our Membership Drive in September. As always, it’s going to be fun and entertaining. Follow us on Facebook and look for posters for more information. The benefits of being an active business member include but are not limited to: ribbon cutting ceremonies for new businesses or any re-grand openings; promotions on Facebook, Twitter and our website directory; you have a liaison with the city; information and help with licensing; being an active member in Business Watch. The Business Watch committee is partnered with CBPD— the information and access to the Police Department is extraordinary. Police Chief Scott Rosenfeld supports us and has made available the right tools to keep us up to date with what’s happening downtown. There are membership benefits for individuals and families alike— a sense of community pride and being a part of the future. Our city was shaped by space travel and surfing. How fortunate we are to look back on our past and be proud. Now is the time to join the efforts to make the future of our town, for our children and many visitors that come, great again. In order for Main Street to work, we need your involvement. At any level! We need to hear from you, we need you to volunteer, actively participate, come out and enjoy our events, show your community support. For more information or if you have any questions, please contact Executive Director, Kenne Wells kenne.cbms@gmail.com

Revisiting a story from our very first issue....

WAKE UP COCOA BEACH STILL THE LOCAL’S VERSION OF TMZ

CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Steve Romano (the Sheriff), Administrator of Wake Up Cocoa Beach Facebook page

I would like to congratulate the Bakers on two years of running this really nice magazine that supports Cocoa Beach. I can’t believe it’s been two years since I wrote the article in the first edition of the Explorer. There have been a few changes...more than you would know, but we are up to 8,414 members from 6,506 (that’s a 30% increase). My building is a different color— THANKS TO IRMA who put a whupping on me. There is a big parking garage next to me that seems to be helping the businesses around town. We are launching more rockets than ever, and there are more cruise ships coming in and out of Port Canaveral. The one thing that seems to be getting better, but damn we better figure out a way to get it better, is our Lagoon. I am not the sharpest crayon in the box, but there must be something we can do or stop doing. I get stopped from time to time in a local establishment from people who never post on WAKE UP COCOA BEACH, but thank me for getting their news. We keep on finding pets, jewelry, bikes, etc. We usually start off with a couple great pictures of sunrises over the ocean and later have sunsets over the river; just think about how lucky we are to live where people want to vacation. It was not too long ago I spent a weekend in Orlando, and every time I engaged in conversation with a bartender, bellman, or anyone, and I told them I was from Cocoa Beach the first response was, “What the heck are you doing over here?” We are truly lucky!

The thing about running a social media forum of close to 10,000 people is keeping it civil. There is a word [civil] that keeps coming up. I have made it clear to the group that we DO NOT talk about Trump, the Clintons, Obama, the Bushes, etc., etc. I believe the great George Carlin (I think the smartest man to ever walk this planet) said something along the lines of “Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, The Roosevelts, Kennedy then Johnson, Nixon, Carter, Clintons and Bushes WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED?” It just seems on WAKE UP COCOA BEACH somehow, someway, someone will make a political post or comment, and then it’s like a shark frenzy. If I have said it once, I will say it 1,000 times, the RIGHT ain’t going to change the LEFT, and the LEFT ain’t going to change the RIGHT. The bravery behind the keyboard is amazing! We just lost a member, Rob McGrath, due to cancer. A great Cocoa Beach guy who was a huge democratic supporter. He would come into town for the Art Show, and when he did, I got him together with my good

friend, Rocky Jenks, who is on the right side (or let’s just say the other side). We all rode bikes on the beach at low tide and had a great time. I guess the moral to my story is that people will say things to each other on a computer that they would never say to each other in person. There are smart people on both sides, and until we

realize that and work together, we are going to struggle. So, WAKE UP COCOA BEACH continues to strive to be the TMZ of Cocoa Beach. I was having lunch one day at a local establishment, and one of my buddies who keeps me grounded was with me. This nice older lady was across the bar from me, and my friend made the comment that she was staring at me. When we made eye contact, the lady pointed her finger at me and said, “Hey, I know you, YOU ARE THE SHERIFF!” He kind of threw up in his mouth, but I do get the nicest messages, thanking me, from all over the country from people who have lived here, have family here, grew up here or that just love to hear what is going on. So, with saying that, I want to congratulate the Bakers on a great magazine, and let’s remember what Ben Franklin said, “We must all hang together, or be rest assured, we will be hung separately”! c o c oa b ea c h e x p l o rer.c o m

Smart Financial Moves For Every Stage of Life Regardless of what stage of life you’re in, you must make financial and investment decisions that will be with you for the remainder of your years. But the moves you make when you’re just starting out in your career may be quite different from when you’re retired. So, let’s look at some of these moves, stretched out across your lifetime. In your 20s and 30s: During this period, you should strive to place yourself on a sound financial footing by taking steps such as reducing, and hopefully eliminating, your student loans and embarking on saving for retirement through investments such as a 401(k) and IRA. You also might buy a home, which offers some financial benefits, but be careful not to become “house poor” by devoting too much of your monthly income to mortgage payments. If you have young children, you might also want to start saving for college, possibly through a 529 plan, which offers tax benefits, high contribution limits and the ability to switch beneficiaries, as needed. And if you do have a family, you’ll certainly need to maintain adequate life insurance. Also, since you’re at the early stages of your working life, you should chart a long-term financial and investment strategy with the help of a financial professional. Your strategy should encompass your important goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. And you’ll want to revisit your strategy regularly to accommodate changes in your life and financial situation. In your 40s and 50s: These are the years in which your career advances, leading to bigger salaries. The more you earn, the more you should be putting away in your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan, along with your IRA. During the middle-to-end of this particular period, you might finish helping pay for your child’s higher education – which should free up even more money to put away for retirement. You also may want to consider long-term care insurance, which can help protect you against the devastating costs of an extended stay in a nursing home. In your 60s, 70s… and beyond: Once you’re in this age range, chances are pretty good that you’ll either retire soon or are already retired. (Although, of course, you may well want to work part-time or do some consulting.) However, you certainly haven’t “retired” the need to make financial and investment decisions, because you’ll have plenty, including these: When should I take Social Security? Will my investment portfolio provide me with enough income to help keep me ahead of inflation? How much can I afford to withdraw each year from my retirement accounts without outliving my resources? Again, a financial professional can help you deal with these and other issues.

Seeing eye to eye comes from meeting face to face. Brad A Bernkrant, ChFC® Financial Advisor

Also, if you haven’t done so, now is the time to draw up your estate plans, so you can leave the type of legacy you desire – one that provides for the next generation (or two) and the charitable organizations you support. You’ll need to work with a legal professional to create estate planning documents and arrangements appropriate for your needs.

This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

www.edwardjones.com MKT-5894G-A-A1

You will spend a lifetime making financial and investment decisions – so put in the time and effort, and get the help you need, to make the best decisions you can.

MYOPIA

Is Your Child at Risk? CONTRIBUTING WRITER Dr. David Hendrix Board Certified Optometrist hendrixeyecare.com

Children with uncorrected and undiagnosed visual problems face many challenges in life. There is a significant relationship between vision and learning, of course, but vision problems can also affect social skills, athletic abilities and the health of their eyes as adults. Unlike adults, children often do not realize that they have vision problems. They often assume that their vision level is the norm because they have little life experience with which to compare it. Comprehensive eye exams can detect visual problems early on leading to earlier treatment and better long-term vision and ocular health. Myopia, or nearsightedness, means that the child has difficulty seeing clearly at a distance. Myopia is the most common visual condition that affects children. Studies estimate that 42% of kids in America under the age of 18 are nearsighted. Young children under the age of 5 have the least risk for having myopia while children aged 1518 have the greatest risk. Symptoms include squinting, sitting close to the television, difficulty with or not wanting to participate in sports and general lack of awareness of surroundings. 14

The rate of myopia has increased dramatically over the past 50 years, and it is expected to continue to increase over the next few decades. Studies have confirmed that prolonged near work is a significant risk factor. Handheld electronic devices have lead to a startling increase in the amount of time that children spend doing near vision work. Research shows that screen time on mobile devices has tripled over the past three years in children 8 years and younger. The average screen time in that age group is now 48 minutes. The average screen time for all children is estimated to be over 2 hours per day. Another key risk factor in the increase of myopia is children spending less time outdoors. Studies have shown that spending at least 60 minutes a day outdoors significantly decreases the risk of developing myopia. Over the past 30 years there has been a large decrease in the amount of free time children spend outdoors. Gone are the days when most children were free to roam their neighborhoods, and this lack of outdoor time has lead to more near-sighted children.

What can be done to slow the rate of progression of near-sightedness? There is a commonly held belief that wearing glasses for near-sightedness will weaken your eyes and lead to worsening of vision. However, in 2015, the World Health Organization published their report on a large-scale study of myopia. The study found that kids who had their vision appropriately corrected with glasses had significantly less worsening of their vision compared to those kids who were either not corrected or were undercorrected. The best form of correction to slow the progression of near-sightedness is lined bifocals or hard bifocal contact lenses. It is important to limit children’s screen time and encourage outdoor activity. Annual comprehensive eye exams are the best way to detect and treat nearsightedness. One of the best times to make this appointment is before or at the beginning of the school year to ensure that your child has the best possible vision for the upcoming academic year.

COCOA BEACH JR/SR HIGH SCHOOL

A N “A” S C H O O L FOR THE 2018-2019 SCHOOL YEAR

As this summer is drawing to a close, we have some great news to share with the community. Cocoa Beach Junior Senior High School has a history of strong academic achievement, and we just received some results for the 2018-2019 school year. The Florida Department of Education has once again named Cocoa Beach an “A” school. The Department of Education has been assigning school grades since 1999; Cocoa Beach has been an “A” school all but two years in that span! The Department of Education calculates these school grades using student test scores and other data such as graduation rate and participation in advanced courses. Speaking of advanced courses, we also learned that once again our students have performed very well in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. Our passing rate for this extremely demanding curriculum was 86% which was the highest in Brevard County and well above the state (74%), national (66%), and even the international average (77%). Further, 31 of our graduates earned the prestigious International Baccalaureate Diploma. This is an incredible achievement for these students. It certainly takes hard work by everyone on the team to continue to record such strong numbers. Our students and staff work very hard, and that leads to these results. It is certainly something to celebrate. I did say summer was drawing to a close. We are all very excited to dive into another school year and help prepare our young people for their future. The first day of school is Monday, August 12th. Our first home football game is August 23rd, and Homecoming week is October 14th-18th.

BARRIER ISLAND PET SUPPLY COCOA BEACH MURAL PROJECT

WRITTEN BY: Doug Baker, Editor Cocoa Beach Explorer

25 N. ORLANDO AVE., COCOA BEACH, FL | 321-783-3200 | barrierislandpet.com

THE MURAL

THE PET STORE

If you have traveled south on A1A through downtown Cocoa Beach lately you may have noticed Barrier Island Pet Supply getting a bit of new “color”. Barrier Island Pet Supply’s colorful new storefront is one of the latest ventures in the 2019 Cocoa Beach Mural Project initiated by local artist Kole Trent. The mural’s colorful rainforest theme laden with tropical flora and fauna is a perfect fit for Barrier Island Pet Supply and this little slice of tropical paradise called Cocoa Beach.

Barrier Island Pet Supply has been in business in Cocoa Beach for 10 years. In May 2018, owners Lonnie Fessler and Deb Richardson, who have worked in the pet industry for over 15 years, felt they needed to be more easily accessible to locals, so they relocated the store from W. Cocoa Beach Causeway (SR 520) to downtown Cocoa Beach. Their 25 N. Orlando Avenue location is one of the few in downtown with dedicated customer parking (located on the south side of the building)— and it’s free!

The goal of Trent Art Gallery’s Cocoa Beach Mural Project, “…to make Cocoa Beach the next Wynwood Art District! This is our home and we would love to see it turned into a global art destination by adding beautiful murals all over the city.”

A local one-stop pet shop for your pet supply needs and a good dose of art therapy all in one location. Yet another reason to love Cocoa Beach!

If you haven’t yet had the opportunity to enjoy this latest piece of downtown art, do yourself a favor and stroll by— the detail will astound you.

Swimming with Mermaids CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Deborah Frey, Ed.D.

In mythology, mermaids were depicted as beautiful sirens that sang to lure sailors to their doom. Disney took the dark, mermaid tale from Hans Christian Andersen and softened it into a child-friendly story with quirky sea creatures and a happy ending. Despite the recent controversy about the upcoming version of the Little Mermaid, the story and theme are still very popular. Mermaid décor is found in clothing, wallpaper, shoes, purses, costumes, bathing suits, and children’s toys. Below are some fun mermaid crafts to share with your children.

Mermaid Slime

Mermaid Crown

Sequined Mermaid

Ingredients: • 5-ounce bottle of clear or white glue • ½ cup water • neon food colors (purple, blue, green) • ¼ teaspoon baking soda • 1 tablespoon of saline solution • glitter & sequins

Ingredients: • wide headband • seas shells • large, fake pearls • flat marbles • plastic gems

Draw or download a picture of a mermaid. Color her hair and skin and add sequins to represent scales for her bikini top and fins. Here is a link to free mermaid templates. https://bit.ly/2XSEsYb

Mix the water, baking soda, and glue in a bowl. Add the food coloring, glitter, and sequins. If you use white glue, the colors will be brighter. If you use clear glue, the colors will be jewel toned. Finally, add the saline solution and stir the mixture until it begins to pull away from the bowl. The longer you work the mixture with your hands the better the consistency. Mix up separate batches of blue, green, and purple and mix them loosely together to make mermaid colors. When you are done playing with the slime, you can add shells, marbles, gems, or plastic sea animals.

Using a hot glue gun, decorate the headband with the sea shells, flat marbles, and gems.
