EDITOR’S LETTER Happy November! This is going to be a busy month. Early month we have the elections, and later month we have Thanksgiving. This is a great time of year to reflect and realize everything we should be thankful for. I for one am thankful for this great town and how all of you have truly embraced our little magazine…. Thank you!

This month’s Cocoa Beach Explorer kept us hopping right down to the day we sent it to print. That is probably because we packed it full of great content. First off, the City of Cocoa Beach sent us a small piece for everyone to check out to help clarify Question 1 on the ballot; we placed that piece on Ben’s page. Next, we are helping your teeth and waistline by giving you a good option of what to do with all that leftover Halloween candy; check out the story on Operation Sweet Tooth. Also, you won’t want to miss the 2nd Annual Boom-Shaka-Loco Silly Surf Social on November 17th at Lori Wilson Park. This event is a ton of fun for everyone involved. Then, we are starting to get you prepared for the holiday season that is upon us. We have a holiday movie preview and a holiday gift guide to help you figure out what movies you must go see and what to get those hard-to-shop-for people. Lastly, Tracee and I are introducing you to a new feature in the magazine called Day Trippin’. This is about fun locations we have visited that are just a short drive away. We thought some of you might want to check them out too; in this issue we are introducing you to Whispering Oaks email: Winery. If you have info@cocoabeachexplorer.com visited some place phone: fun on a day trip, let us 321-759-6064 know and we might check them out and feature them in a future issue. As always, thank you for taking the time to read our magazine. Tracee and I hope that you have a wonderful Thanksgiving filled with happiness. Talk to you in December!

MALIK’S
FROM THE MAYOR
MESSAGE C O C OA B E ACH U P DAT E
written by Mayor Ben Malik
November. Hope we can all be thankful for our many blessings and enjoy our beautiful beach town and welcome our visitors from the North (yes, there will be more traffic but hardly the stuff of I-4/International Drive). During this month of Thanksgiving, I have so many things to be thankful for, so please indulge me a bit as I “ramble on” (50th anniversary this year of Led Zeppelin, still waiting for hopes of a 50th anniversary tour!). I am most thankful to have the opportunity to be on this Earth to spend time with my family! (It has been three years since I suffered a heart attack while surfing on 4th of July weekend in 2015. Considering the three 100% blockages in my LAD artery and 95% blockage of my right artery, it is amazing I am still here! Thanks Dr. Palaniyandi and Health First Cape Canaveral Hospital and staff. Four stents later, all is well!)

The ability to still surf and serve via Surfers Helping Kids and making a difference abroad in El Salvador and here in our community; it is truly better to give! For God’s abundant love for all his children. The beauty of a Cocoa Beach sunrise on the ocean and the glassy swells that beckon us to play. (Get up early one day and watch it rise over the ocean. I promise it will be amazing!) For being spared so far from hurricanes this year and prayers for those that have suffered from these devastating events.
See you at the Surfers Helping Kids event, Boom-Shaka-Loco Silly Surf Social on Sat., Nov. 18th at Lori Wilson Park (free, family fun event from 8am – 3pm) Thank you for your support and allowing me to serve as your Mayor. Please feel to contact me with any suggestions at bmalik@cityofcocoabeach.com or my cell at 321-794-6668.

I am also thankful for: • My spouse, Kelly, and my family who always have my back. They are the best things in my life! • Being able to walk my daughter down the aisle in 2016 and adding a son-in-law to our family (even though he graduated from FSU, he is a good fellow)! • Seeing my son graduate from CBHS last year and start his college career (advice to new students, check out ratemyprofessors.com to ensure you don’t make a huge mistake in class selection)! • For my friends and neighbors (many of which I see at the grocery store, coffee shops, and in the lineup on a fun glassy surf day enjoying the best that Cocoa Beach has to offer)! • The residents who supported me during the last election. And to those that didn’t, thanks for keeping me hypermotivated to work harder and do the best job I can for all the residents and businesses of Cocoa Beach! • All the hardworking first responders, fellow city commissioners and city staff that keep our community safe and our city running! • All the first responders and service members across our entire country protecting us from harm here and abroad; we owe you a tremendous gratitude! My other employer, CenterState Bank, that allows me the ability to juggle my duties to serve my community! • For all the awesome community service clubs like Kiwanis, Rotary, Elks, school boosters, etc., for making our communities such an awesome place to live!

Surfers Helping Kids Silly Surfing Event
Surfers Helping Kids: Agape in Action (S.H.a.K.a) -- a Cocoa Beach based nonprofit focused on serving children in need -- aims to bring the local community together to celebrate a shared love of surfing and ocean sports and raise money for at-risk kids both locally and internationally. This family-friendly event is free and open to the public. This is not a traditional surf contest, but rather a fun, goofy, laugh-until-you-cry display of surfing at its silliest. In place of traditional competitive divisions, the event will feature divisions such as “The Brutal Noodle” (where surfers on soft boards whack each other with pool noodles until only one remains), “Raft Riders” (participants ride waves on inflatable rafts), “Crazy Costume” division, an Adaptive Surfers division, and more.

All money raised by S.H.a.K.a goes toward providing children - in Brevard and Central America - with basic needs and positive experiences. S.H.a.K.a serves local children through surfing-based experiences, as well as through collaboration with existing organizations and agencies already doing great work. To date, S.H.a.K.a has traveled to impoverished communities in El Salvador twice on “Surf & Serve” missions, which brought clean water, healthcare supplies, clothing, groceries, and community enrichment activities to Salvadoran orphans and families in need. This is an example of a community coming together for action - S.H.a.K.a’s board of directors includes key members of the local community - including Cocoa Beach Mayor, Ben Malik and City Commissioner Ed Martinez, Pastor Mark Reynolds, and more. Sponsorships for this event encompass a wide range of Brevard-based businesses. Attendance and registration are completely free for this kid/family friendly event.

Awards for silly division winners are hand-carved wooden tikis, crafted by a Salvadoran artisan. Our Adaptive Surfers division will feature surfers of all ages with physical, cognitive and physiological challenges. The goal is inclusiveness and good vibes for all! Non-surfing activities at the event will include: an interactive demonstration by the Lokahi Outrigger Canoe Club; skateboard deck painting led by local artists (free); a “silly sandy triathlon” for kids; food trucks; SUP demos; a raffle featuring thousands of dollars in prizes; a beach clean-up and more. Did we mention it’s hilarious, positive and healthy entertainment for the whole family? weather in Cocoa Beach had been simply perfect. Sunny days, not such blistering heat, a little breezy in the afternoons. But the best weather feature at this time of year is that there is little rain. In fact, it’s been weeks since we’ve had rain disrupt anything we’ve wanted to do. That all changed Thursday, October 4. That day Cocoa Beach saw what seemed like hours of rain – inches and inches. That day, in the midst of all that rain, 1800 students up and down the coast from Daytona to Melbourne, from 30 schools and with thirty organizations participating, learned about field science--actually taking the learning form the classroom to a place outside of the classroom doors. What did that look like at Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. HS? Well, Mrs. Roselip’s classes were in charge of the biological survey – casting nets, catching and identifying fish, making sure there was enough fresh water for the fish. She said, “Travis Frame was a Rock Star! He caught all kinds of fish!” Mr. Carpenter’s classes were responsible to catch the images of what was happening and will be putting a presentation together about the day to present to classes. Mr. Ebright’s classes measured the tidal change calculating current wind direction and wind speed. They tested the waters for evidence of bull sharks in hopes of creating a bull shark nursery. Mr. Ebright commented, “This is what field science is – you have to know what you’re doing scientifically because you can’t predict the

conditions.” Mrs. Rendla’s class captured physical data of the day looking at plant, bird and animal life, longitudinal and latitudinal data, and mapping the area. Mr. Mardulier, the school-based organizer of the event, handled the chemistry tests: PH levels, oxygen levels, water and air temp, nitrates and phosphates; in order to test the health of the water. Why? “This was to create a baseline for the entire lagoon from New Smyrna to Jupiter Inlet. It is to piggy back on the 5-year study by the Marine Resource Council. And, we couldn’t have done it without the support of the Surfrider Foundation of Cocoa Beach and the St. John’s Water Management folks who provided, equipment, tents, testing kits as well as experts in the field.” This day was full of chemistry, biology and physical science. Students participating couldn’t say enough about how much
fun they had while learning. It was exciting and they learned things they never knew before – how to cast a net, how to take measurements, touch a fish! “THIS,” they say, “was learning!” Even in the rain.

Children’s VOICE
Mother May I? Teaching manners and cooperative behavior to children has always been a challenge. When teaching elementary school, I used to debate the first-grade teacher as to whether or not it was our place to teach manners when children had not learned them at home. As a teacher, I felt obligated to provide the instruction so that students could become productive citizens and live within the parameters of our society. Good manners will take a person far in life. The article “Job Interview Etiquette” offers twelve tips to job seekers to land their dream job. Nearly every tip is related to good manners, not experience, or professional knowledge, but good old- fashioned courtesy. Recommendations include using formal titles like Mr. and Mrs., looking people in the eye, not interrupting the interviewer, and thanking the staff for the interview in person along with a follow-up thank you note. To polish the manners of your child or grandchild, first, have high expectations. If you simply model and require civility, the child will mimic your behavior. “Please, thank you, and may I.” These three simple buzzwords and phrases will take your child far in life. Remember the game, “Mother, May I?” Playing this game will be a fun reinforcement for good manners.

Thanksgiving Word Scramble
Mother May I? 1. One person plays the “mother.” 2. Approximately 20 feet away, the children line up facing the mother. 3. The mother calls out a child’s name. 4. The child makes a request, such as “Mother, may I take 3 giant steps forward. 5. The mother modifies the request by saying, “No, but you may take 3 baby steps forward.” 6. The child says, “Thank you, Mother” and takes the 3 steps and it is the next child’s turn. 7. The game continues as the children move closer and closer until someone touches the mother. 8. That child will become the new “mother.”

HOLIDAY MOVIE PREVIEW By: Jim Warthen
While summer is officially over, we residents of the Space Coast know that wouldn’t be able to tell if we relied on the weather. It’s still hot and humid, as usual, and the threat of tropical storms won’t end until we near the final days of November. We know the holidays are approaching though, since stores are quickly stocking shelves with Halloween supplies, and in some cases, even Christmas supplies. Since we’re nearing the sometimes stressful, sometimes fun, but always busy holiday season, I’ve prepared a list of some upcoming films to help you grab a little leisure time if you need it.
Bohemian Rhapsody (Nov 2) Fans of the band Queen should love this one, but even if you only know “We Will Rock You”, this movie looks like it should be entertaining for everyone. Rami Malek stars as Freddie Mercury in what could be shaping up to be his break-out film role. He’s shown up as a resurrected Pharaoh in the Night at the Museum movies, but he’s best known for his starring role in the TV show Mr. Robot. The film’s director, Bryan Singer has directed the first two X-Men movies back in the early 2000s. He’s responsible for casting Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, and this alone gives him a lifetime of credit in my book, but if you need convincing that he’s a good dramatic director, he also gave us 1998’s ‘Apt Pupil’. Check out Bohemian Rhapsody, if should be a great ride. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (Nov 16) This movie is the second in the new movie series based off of the world of Harry Potter. It continues the story of Newt Scamander, a wizard who loves magical creatures. In the first Fantastic Beasts film, Newt helped solve a magical mystery that posed a danger to both the human and wizarding world. In this movie, Newt connects with a young Dumbledore to try and stop Grindelwald, a dark wizard who thinks that wizards should rule over non-magical people. The film stars Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne and Johnny Depp, and is directed by David Yates, who directed 5 other Harry Potter movies. Everyone loves Harry Potter, and this one should have some great moments for all types of audiences. Creed II (Nov 21) Rocky is a classic film series, and it’s now endured over 40 years of success, making this movie the 8th one since it all started in 1976. This movie keeps the Sly Stallone as Rocky, and also Michael B. Jordan as Adonis Creed. He’s the son of Apollo Creed, Rocky’s one-time opponent turned best friend from the first few movies. In the last installment, Rocky trained Adonis to follow in his father’s footsteps as a great boxer. In this latest addition, the duo faces
18

an opponent with ties to their shared past and have to decide what’s worth fighting for. Sylvester Stallone always brings his “A game” when he works with the Rocky character, and Jordan has been fantastic as his protégé. This movie should have plenty of heart and drama, with a feel-good ending. Mary Poppins Returns (Dec 19) Most adults are familiar with Disney’s original Mary Poppins movie from 1964, but these days, many children might know of it by name only, or seen references to it in places like a Disney theme park. This means that they whole family can enjoy this one together, as parents relive childhood memories, and kids get introduced to a world of wonder that has captivated children for decades. In this new installment, Emily Blunt stars as Mary Poppins, as she visits the nowadult characters of Jane and Michael, the siblings that she cared for in the first movie. She helps the pair learn to rediscover the joy they had has children, and share t with their own families. This marks the first big film role for Lin-Manuel Miranda, the man behind Broadway’s musical Hamilton, and even features a little bit of Dick Van Dyke himself. The star power alone makes this ticket worth it, so I’d definitely take the family and go check this one out. Bumblebee (Dec 21) Every single movie I’m listing here is either a sequel, adaptation, or remake. These seem to make up the majority of what’s produced these days, so why should the last pick be any different? This movie continues the seemingly never-ending stream of Transformers movies to flow onto the big screen since 2007. These films have been steadily making their way to theaters every 2-3 years over the last decade, and in the opinion of this film fan, gotten steadily more predictable and forgettable. This one however, seems like it might be a bright spot that helps reimagine the series a bit. It’s got a fresh director who is making his live-action debut but has proven a knack for great storytelling with animated films like ‘Kubo and the Two Strings’. And with this movie focusing mostly on one great character (Bumblebee), this movie has a chance to turn away from the sprawling CGI mess that the Transformers movies have become and tighten into something more character focused and story driven. Whether you love the other Transformers movies, or don’t care for them, this movie should offer something fresh that’s bound to keep you entertained.

Operation Sweet Tooth Halloween Treats for the Troops
It was October of 2014, Halloween was rapidly approaching and Dr. Erin Kahlon, owner of Cocoa Beach Family Dentistry, was exploring ways to reduce the sugar overload the trick-or-treating kids were about to embark on. In exploring the possibilities, she decided that simply paying the children for their unwanted candy probably wasn’t the best incentive. Dr. Kahlon wanted the kids to truly WANT to give their candy, not just for money, but for a good cause. And, what better cause than to share their candy with our brave men and women stationed overseas; they enjoy Halloween goodies too! It was this initiative that inspired Operation Sweet Tooth.
donation before Dr. Kahlon and a few staff members from Patrick Air Force Base make their donation pickups. Of course, Dr. Kahlon cannot send our troops all that sweet-treat goodness without making sure they have the proper tools to take care of those pearly whites. So, along with the Halloween treat care packages, Cocoa Beach Family Dentistry also donates toothbrushes, toothpaste and dental floss. How do the care packages get to our troops? Well, that would be courtesy of the amazing staff at
“I look forward to coordinating and organizing this candy drive every year. Not only do we get to supply our troops overseas with treats plus oral hygiene products, we get our local students to learn about donating something they have excess amounts of. Certainly, reducing the sugar in the children’s diet is an added bonus.” -- Dr. Erin Kahlon, D.D.S. Each Halloween, Dr. Kahlon drops off collection bins to our two local elementary schools, Freedom 7 and Roosevelt. The kids typically have a week or two after Halloween to bring in their unwanted candy for

Patrick Air Force Base. Staff members at PAFB assist in the collection of the donation bins, and they then bundle and ship the care packages to our troops overseas.

In the last couple of years, Doug and I have started “Going Walkabout,” which is just our nickname for a day trip with the requirement of no planned destination. We hop in the car, pick a direction and drive until we see something that piques our interest. Along the way, we have discovered some amazing places and had some unique adventures. We thought we would start sharing some of these adventures with you, our neighbors, in the event you might want to experience them too.
A short one hour and 55-minute drive northwest of Cocoa Beach is a true hidden Florida gem— Whispering Oaks Winery. Located just south of Ocala in Florida’s horse country, you will find yourself taken back to what Florida looked and felt like before urban sprawl took over.
