Spring is in the air….AND all the spring breakers are on our roads, in our hotels, and getting on our cruise ships. You can absolutely tell by the traffic on A1A that it is spring in Cocoa Beach. Can you blame them? They just want to experience our little piece of paradise. Not to mention all the events that happen this time of year too. We have included a timeline of a ton of events happening around us. In this month’s “Refresh, Renew, Restore” article we are featuring 4th Street Fillin Station. We chatted with Daniel Todd about how three friends turned an old automotive garage into an eclectically original gastropub. In the process, they created something special from a piece of Cocoa Beach’s history. Do you want to be on TV? Here is your big opportunity. We have information on how you can become one of the next contestants on the reality TV show Survivor. They are holding another casting call at Victory Casino’s terminal on April 28th from 10am till 2pm. Three people have been cast for the show from previous casting calls at Victory Casino. Are you the next one?

Also featured in this month’s issue, Tracee writes about bestselling author Michael Tougias who was just at the Cocoa Beach Library in March. She chats with him about his current book, along with discussing his writing style and some of his previous books. If you are looking for your next great read, look no further, we have found it for you. Lastly, don’t miss the story about Cocoa Beach Plumbing Services. Sarah McKay shares how she is proud to be the third email: generation to carry info@cocoabeachexplorer.com on the family’s traphone: dition. Sarah and her 321-759-6064 husband, Chad, are proud to continue to provide quality plumbing services here in Cocoa Beach while adding their own family touch. Well that about wraps up this month’s issue. Hope you and your family have a happy Easter and enjoy our beautiful weather. With everything going on this month, I’m sure we will see you around town.

REFRESH, RENEW, RESTORE 4TH STREET FILLIN STATION
WRITTEN BY: Doug Baker
We are continuing our series called “Refresh, Renew, Restore” focusing on buildings and areas around Cocoa Beach getting a fresh new look. This month we are spotlighting 4th Street Fillin Station located at the Mobil gas station in Downtown Cocoa Beach. Three friends, one idea and lots of hard work turned an old automotive garage into an eclectically original gastropub combined with a working gas station and convenience store.
I sat down and spoke with Daniel Todd, one of the owners of 4th Street Fillin Station, to find out a bit more about this unique establishment and how the conversion from a closed gas station/garage to a great neighborhood restaurant and bar came to be. The concept for 4th Street Fillin Station was born on a cocktail napkin over a few beers with his partners Mark Ingram and Mike Schwarz. Realizing there was a hole in the Cocoa Beach market for a casual, but upscale, open-air hangout, the three friends devised a plan to fill the gap. They wanted meals to be an experience— envisioning a location with plenty of room to relax and dishes filled with simple, delicious ingredients which could accommodate any dietary request including many vegan options. With just a few modifications, the original gas station was reopened in mid-June of 2018; however, transitioning the old garage into the piece of art it is today took a bit more time and ingenuity. Taking the time, seven months to be exact, to “do it right” paid off. The inside of the gastropub maintains the history of its garage origins with custom metal work incorporating actual tools salvaged from the old garage, and they even converted two of the old car lifts into unique tables. The bay doors, well they still roll up, letting in that 6

lin Station is a piece of art, well, I meant it literally. Abstract artist INSANO from Panama was commissioned to turn the location into his canvas. Brightly colored murals contrast with the gastropub’s steampunk feel creating a very cool fun vibe.
We tip our hats to Daniel, Mark and Mike for providing Cocoa Beach with this great, fresh new location born from a piece of its own history.

Corporal Jackie George is a 15-year law enforcement veteran who exemplifies dedication to the profession, the department, and the community she serves. Her primary responsibility is line-level patrol supervision, but she is charged with many other ancillary duties including traffic homicide investigations, field training, instructing personnel in Taser and vehicle operations, crime prevention, and community relations. Corporal George’s ability to independently handle these duties with efficiency, while maintaining such a positive attitude, made this year’s Officer of the Year selection an easy one.

Brandee has only been with the Department since June 2018, so to even be considered for this recognition is an accomplishment in and of itself. Brandee was a self-starter right out of the gate. She is congenial, dependable, has strong organizational skills, and continually looks to take on more responsibility. Being the Chief ’s Administrative Specialist means wearing many different hats. Dedication, positive attitude, and resourcefulness make Brandee the obvious choice.

Telecommunications Officer (TCO) Petri is a six-year veteran with the Cocoa Beach Police Department. She was selected for the dedication, initiative, and strong work ethic, as well as her willingness to go above and beyond to assist patrol officers in their normal course of duty. TCO Petri is always willing to take on new assignments. If she notices something concerning the Communications function that needs to be changed or updated, she will bring it to supervisory attention and offer to make the needed changes herself. There just doesn’t seem to be a task that TCO Petri will not take on.

Jerry McIlmoyle and M. Tougias
Author Michael Tougias Visits Cocoa Beach Library to Discuss His Latest Book Above & Beyond: John F. Kennedy and America’s Most Dangerous Spy Mission WRITTEN BY: Tracee Baker
As an avid reader, I am constantly on the lookout for my next great read. I’ve found it! Above and Beyond: John F. Kennedy and America’s Most Dangerous Spy Mission by New York Times bestselling author Michael J. Tougias. Some of you lived through those infamous days in October 1962, others of us learned about it in history classes or by hearing stories from our parents or grandparents. However, I wonder how many, or how few, know the complete story of just how close the U.S. came to the brink of nuclear war or about the heroes who pulled us back from that precipice. In March, Michael Tougias visited the Cocoa Beach library to discuss Above and Beyond. Fortunately, we were able to discuss a few details with Michael and discover some amazing insights into his newest book along with his inspiration and passion for authoring true survival stories and historical books. Tougias stated, “In the beginning, my inspiration for Above and Beyond was Rudy Anderson, a U.S. U-2 spy plane pilot shot down and killed over Cuba during the crisis. I wanted to give him attention for giving his life and helping our country. Then during the research, I uncovered three other events 10
c o c oab eache x plorer.c om
which put us right on the brink of war—all four are in the book.” President Kennedy’s meetings were secretly recorded and in researching for Above and Beyond, Michael was able to read the transcripts of these meetings and place the more dramatic encounters into the book. “There were four lesser-known events that will make people’s hair stand up because we were just that close to nuclear war,” said Tougias. “These events occurred because of miscommunications or miscalculations— the very things Kennedy and Khrushchev worried about actually did happen. In a couple of cases, it was luck that averted war.” The opening chapter follows a pilot, Jerry McIlmoyle, who experienced a near miss by Russian surface-to-air missiles during a Cuba fly-over on October 25, 1962, while flying his U-2 spy plane 13 miles above the earth. The military subsequently covered this incident up seeming because they were afraid if President Kennedy knew McIlmoyle had been fired upon he would suspend the U-2 overflights depriving them of pertinent information for a possible invasion. Jerry describes his experience in an interview on Tougias’ website www.michaeltougias.com
JFK addressing the nation WRITING STYLE
We asked Michael about his writing style, and this is what he had to say. “My mantra when I’m writing is ‘make them fast paced.’ That is how I try to do it, especially with those true rescue books. People tell me they stay up all night to finish them. The pacing is intentional on my part. In the case of A Storm Too Soon, the story is written in the present tense, so it is like you are going through the ordeal along with the people. These are the types of books I like to read, so I’m going to write for people like myself. Hook them in the first chapter!” OTHER BOOKS
Another of Tougias’ bestselling books, The Finest Hours: The True Story of the U.S. Coast Guard’s Most Daring Sea Rescue, tells the story of Bernie Webber and the harrowing rescue of 32 sailors from the stern of the tanker Pendleton. Webber, described by Tougias as a very humble man, was a Melbourne, Florida, resident for many years until his death in 2009.

KEEPING IT ALL IN THE FAMILY
A 3rd Generation Family-Owned Cocoa Beach Business CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Sarah McKay Owner of Cocoa Beach Plumbing Services, Inc.
“I remember as a little girl posing for a picture in front of my parents plumbing company for a local magazine, and now here I am with my family doing the exact same thing—God is so good!” My father learned everything he knew about plumbing from his father, and three generations in, that process is still going strong. My father took over his father’s plumbing business after many years of working as his employee. Now, here we are in 2019 as the 3rd family generation plumbing company. I met my husband, Chad McKay, while working in the office of Cocoa Beach Plumbing. Chad was an employee of my dad’s and was making a name for himself in the plumbing world. I remember receiving call after call of customers requesting “Chad only.” I always knew Chad was a fabulous plumber; the phone calls always proved that. About 10 years into his job at Cocoa Beach Plumbing, I was no longer just the 12
secretary, but the girlfriend. Soon into our dating life, Chad began the process of obtaining his Master Plumber License. Long story short, a few years later we were married, and in early 2018 the conversation began regarding the purchase of the plumbing business from my parents. I had watched my dad work diligently in providing a quality plumbing service for his community, and I was excited at the chance to continue that process while adding our own family touch. By November of that same year, we were officially owners of Cocoa Beach Plumbing Services, Inc. As a family, Chad and I are excited to revamp, renew and refresh Cocoa Beach Plumbing Services, Inc. It is a blessing we get to pour into our community as we know the importance of providing quality work.
Sarah and Chad McKay Every day is a chance for us to grow as leaders, to grow a confident team of employees who know they are appreciated and to grow a solid customer base that can be confident in our abilities. It has been incredible to see God unfold this plumbing story in my family’s life, and we are excited to see if the story will continue for even more generations to come.

FROM THE MAYOR
MALIK’S
MESSAGE C O C OA B E ACH U P DAT E
CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Mayor Ben Malik
Last month I attended an Ash Wednesday service led by Father Val DeVera at Our Saviours Catholic Church in Cocoa Beach. Father DeVera’s sermon to remember the phrase “memento mori,” Latin phrase for “remember you will die,” really stuck with me. The phrase is not intended to frighten or cause alarm about death but to acknowledge our own mortality and to reflect on living a more simple life. Father DeVera encouraged all of us to live a humble life and to realize our time on earth is short and to use the time wisely instead of only pursuing wealth and material goods. This is a simple concept applicable to everyone no matter what one’s religion for all of us to live a happy life. I have had the big house, expensive automobiles, etc., and finally realized I was not really happy. What matters most in life is time with your family and what you do for your fellow man and community! There is an excitement in the air about Cocoa Beach that has not existed for some time! Our new parking garage is almost complete which, as intended, resulted in the organic growth of several new restaurants in our downtown (https://www.floridatoday.com/story/life/style/suzy-leonard/2019/03/08/cocoa-beach-restaurant-scene-beckons-new-parkinggarage-coming-soon/3095087002/). This culinary renaissance couldn’t have happened without recent land development changes allowing shared parking/mixed use and investment in a parking garage (funded by CRA bond). This has led to investment in our community with these new additions and surrounding commercial/residential values have all benefited as evidenced by recent real estate market data (rents downtown are no longer $6-$8 per sq. ft. but are now in $16-$20 range). Ocean Dunes is finalizing their plans for the 25 new condos downtown which will be the first new residential condo project in Cocoa Beach for some time! The 520 parcel owned by Health First recently sold for $4.5MM and will be developed soon (plans are still being finalized)! These improvements came about as a result of not only a better economy but reflect the efforts of small changes in land development/building codes to encourage redevelopment in a small portion of our community which will allow the City to tackle our deferred infrastructure and beautify our community! Our region’s commercial space program is leading us back into manned flights into space this summer with the successful initial launch of Space X’s Dragon capsule (Russia has been charging us $81 million per seat to send our astronauts to space)! There are a number of other commercial launch companies coming into our area to increase competition including Blue Origin, Firefly, and One Web (which recently launched six small satellites from French Guinea and plans on offering sat-based high-speed Internet— look out Spectrum!). Thank you for your support and allowing me to serve as your Mayor, please feel to contact me with any suggestions at bmalik@cityofcocoabeach.com or my cell at 321-794-6668. c o c oab eac he x plorer.c om

Have you ever had the opportunity to see a play put on by the award-winning Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School drama department? Did you read Dr. Seuss books to your children? Did your parents read them to you? On April 11th, 2019 at 10:00 am, the award-winning Cocoa Beach Jr. / Sr. High School Fine Arts Department will proudly present, Seussical the Musical! Music is by Stephen Flaherty, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, from the book by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens. Co-conceived by Lynn Ahrens, Stephen Flaherty and Eric Idle. Seussical the Musical is based on the books by Dr. Seuss. It’s characters and

plot lines derive from Horton Hears a Who, but there are many other story lines built in to the play. Now one of the most performed shows in America, Seussical is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza. The Cat in the Hat tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust that contains the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child sent off to military school for thinking too many “thinks.” Horton faces a double challenge: not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers,
Seussical Singers but he must guard an abandoned egg left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant. Some of the amazing cast include the following: Kristiana Quiett as Cat in the Hat, Julianne Patillo as JoJo, Chris DeMuro as Horton, Ava Bogle as Gertrude and Ava Boyd as Mayzie. Stagecraft technical assistance students include Lucas Harges and Xavier Matos. Of course, many other of our students are involved in both acting, singing, dancing and stagecraft! Seussical will be presented April 11, 12 and 13 at 7:00 p.m. in the Cocoa Beach Auditorium. Our student cast members and our behind-the-scenes stage craft students have worked hard over the past several months to create a fun-filled evening for all who attend. Tickets are $10.00 and can be purchased at the door. We hope to see you there! 16

Safety at the Beach
CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Deborah Frey, Ed.D.
Please send future column ideas to Dr. Deb at drdeborahfrey@yahoo.com Salt, sand, and waves are in my blood! My family had a beach condo in Ocean City, Maryland when I was growing up. We spent many wonderful days along the shore and to this day we have a yearly family reunion on Hilton Head Island. My husband and I vacation on the beaches of Cancun, Hawaii, and Acapulco and have taken a couple of cruises to tropical islands. Along the way, we’ve had some unfortunate accidents that have spoiled our days in paradise! We all try hard to keep our children safe, but they have an annoying habit of doing the unexpected. When my eightyear old daughter and husband were waiting to cross the street in Ocean City, she darted in front of a car. No, she wasn’t holding his hand because they were both carrying things and yes, she was hit. Fortunately, she survived with scrapes and bruises, but the two previous children hit at the same intersection did not survive their accidents. Always be aware of traffic, even on Ocean Beach Boulevard where the speed limit is 25 miles per hour. My daughter certainly knew better than to dart into traffic, but children can be impulsive when they are excited.

During our first full day in Cancun, our daughters went to the pool while we were caught up in a time share presentation. By the time we escaped, both children were terribly sunburned and miserable for the rest of the vacation. The sunscreen was in my bag and we’d left the room before applying it on the girls. During our subsequent vacations, we’d apply the sunscreen inside the condo. Doctors recommend a SPF rating of 50 or higher for young tender skin and a waterproof version of sunscreen will be resistant to washing off at the first immersion in water. Just be aware that sunscreen can only protect for up to five hours. Reapplying it will not help protect for additional hours of the day. Other options are hats and sun protective clothing. Although our Cocoa Beaches are fairly clean, there is always a danger of stepping on discarded fishhooks, rough shells and sticks, crab claws and shells, sharp plastic and glass, and jellyfish. Lightweight water shoes will help protect your little one’s feet as they cross splintered boardwalks, tread on hot sand, and cross patches of broken shells to reach the ocean. If you are in need of emergency care, below is contact information for drop-in healthcare centers in and around Cocoa Beach.
