EDITOR’S LETTER appy new year! We want to wish each of our readers a healthy, happy and prosperous 2020. Take a moment just to focus on your plans for the new year. Set some new goals for yourself, or maybe just revisit some goals from 2019 that might have fallen by the wayside. Let’s all make today better than yesterday.

During Winterfest, we dropped by a Cocoa Beach business which had previously advertised with us only to find out by the time you are reading this letter they will be out of business. Without all of us supporting small local businesses, they just can’t compete with the online retail giants. These advertisers are your neighbors, friends or even relatives, so let’s get out there and support them— shop and dine locally. Please take a moment and look through our advertisers and continue to patronize their businesses. It is their support which makes this local magazine possible. Our challenge to you, and to ourselves, for 2020 is to find an advertiser in the magazine which you might not have visited in a while or maybe never visited or used their services and make a point to reach out to them. Go to a local restaurant for dinner, shop at a local retail establishment instead of online, or book a household service. We all get in a rut and continue going to the same locations or doing the same things because it is comfortable and easy, but for 2020 let’s get out of the rut and try something different! We are always looking for local content for our magazine. Do you have a story idea? Do you know someone (or yourself) with an amazing experience that needs to be shared? Maybe your organization has an upcoming event or fundraiser that your neighbors might be interested in hearing more about. Reach out to us; we’d love to hear from you. Email us at info@explorermultimedia.com or call 321-759-6064. Have a wonderful start to this new year. Get out there and make 2020 your best year yet!

MALIK’S MESSAGE

COCOA BEACH UPDATE FROM THE MAYOR

CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Mayor Ben Malik

Stay warm Cocoa Beach; we have had a few cold snaps to quickly remind us of why we live in Florida! Let’s be good neighbors to our visitors from the North that support our local merchants as they escape the sub-zero wind chills and snow! It’s also a time to commit to those new year’s resolutions on fitness and weight control that seem to quickly go by the wayside in a few weeks. Being healthy and fit is not only a lifestyle change but represents an individual effort to do so. It requires true desire and willpower to achieve these goals. I must say I have been inspired by my son, Chris, to get back into shape and lose a few pounds. I am so proud of the young man he has grown into, and he has been going to the gym and eating healthy for quite some time now (thanks Debbie Barnes-trainer from Cocoa Beach Health & Fitness for guiding us!). As a young kid, he played a lot of video games and didn’t make the best eating choices. Today, I cannot keep up with him at the gym but will keep at it with him. He works out every day and eats healthy (you can have a cheat day and not deprive yourself— just don’t make it two days in a row!!)! There is no magic pill, diet or anything else that works; it is simply eating healthy and staying active.

Get off your electronics and go for a walk/run on the beach, ride your bike, skateboard, surf, lift weights and avoid sugary/processed foods. It really is not that hard if you set your mind to it; you will live a better and more productive life! Here is the proof:

The winning team will be determined by the total number of minutes exercised by the members of each team. The municipality with the most points will win the challenger trophy, “Most Fit City 2020. And guess what, surfing/ skating counts. Keep those new year’s resolutions by staying active! Thank you for your support and allowing me to serve as your Mayor. Please feel free to contact me with any suggestions at bmalik@cityofcocoabeach.com or my cell at 321.794.6668

We will break ground soon on the new Cocoa Beach Police Station, and this will be the year NASA will send American astronauts to space for the first time since 2011 (no more expensive Russian rocket launches). Way to go Space X, Boeing and NASA!!

COCOA BEACH JR/SR RECEIVES GENEROUS DONATION TO BOLSTER HEALTH AND WELLNESS PROGRAMS CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Mark J. Rendell, Principal of Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School

We want to highlight the generous contributions of one of our local business partners. We received a grant for $5,000 from State Farm Insurance. The funds will be used to purchase treadmills, dumbbell sets, workout mats, heart rate monitors and fitness workbooks. This is all part of a renewed focus on health and wellness at our school. With the additional equipment, we will be able to help students attain and maintain a well-balanced health and fitness routine. We were made aware of the competitive grant program by local State Farm Agent Sara Houston. We are extremely grateful to State Farm for this generous contribution, and we want to thank agent Sara Houston for making this possible. State Farm Agent Sara Houston presents a check for $5,000 to Cocoa Beach High School.

TIME FOR SOME NEW YEAR’S FINANCIAL RESOLUTIONS Have you thought about your New Year’s resolutions for 2020? When

many of us make these promises, we focus on ways we can improve some form of our health. We vow to get more physically healthy by going to the gym, or we promise to improve our mental health by learning a new language or instrument. But it’s also important to think about our financial health – so it’s a good idea to develop some appropriate resolutions for this area, too. What kinds of financial resolutions might you make? Here are a few suggestions: Increase your retirement plan contributions. One of the best financial moves you can make is to take full advantage of your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan. If you contribute pre-tax dollars to your plan, the more you put in, the lower your taxable income will be for the year, and your earnings can grow on a tax-deferred basis. So, if your salary goes up in 2020, increase the amount you put into to your plan. Most people don’t come close to reaching the annual contribution limit, which, in 2019, was $19,000, or $25,000 for those 50 or older. You might not reach these levels, either, but it’s certainly worthwhile to invest as much as you can possibly afford. Use “found” money wisely. During the course of the next year, you may well receive some money outside your normal paychecks, such as a bonus or a tax refund. It can be tempting to spend this money, but you may help yourself in the long run by investing it. You could use it to help fund your IRA for the year or to fill a gap in another investment account.

Be financially prepared for the unexpected. Even if you’re diligent about saving and investing for your long-term goals, you can encounter obstacles along the way. And one of these roadblocks could come in the form of large, unexpected expenses, such as the sudden need for a new car or some costly medical bills. If you aren’t prepared for these costs, you might have to dip in to your long-term investments to pay for them. To prevent this from happening, you may want to keep sufficient cash, or cash equivalents, in your investment accounts. Or you might want to maintain a completely separate account as an emergency fund, with the money kept in low-risk, liquid vehicles. If possible, try to maintain at least six months’ worth of living expenses in this account. It will take some effort but following these resolutions could help you move closer to your financial goals in 2020 – and beyond. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

ARE YOU CERTAIN YOU ARE INVESTED PROPERLY? Be sure, get a second opinion!! Brad A. Bernkrant, ChFC ® F I N AN CI AL ADV I S OR

Don’t overreact to market downturns. You’ve probably heard stories about people who lamented not getting in “on the ground floor” of what is now a mega-company. But a far more common investment mistake is overreacting to temporary market downturns by selling investments at the wrong time (when their prices are down) and staying out of the market until things calm down (and possibly missing the next rally). The financial markets always fluctuate, but if you can resolve to stay invested and follow a consistent, long-term strategy, you can avoid making some costly errors.

Adopt A

Downtown

CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Kenne Wells Executive Director, Cocoa Beach Main Street

Cocoa Beach Main Street in partnership with Keep Brevard Beautiful, Inc. (KBB) has created, the first Adopt-a-Downtown. Like the ongoing road and beach clean-ups and adoptions, there hasn’t been a downtown clean-up movement. Until now! We are reaching out and encouraging local businesses, organizations, schools, government officials or any locals interested in adopting an area of downtown and keeping it clean. Your only commitment is to maintain the adopted area for a minimum of one month, but hopefully, you will continue throughout the year. The purpose is to raise awareness on the importance of litter prevention while fostering community engagement and improving where we all live, work, shop, eat and play. The reward is a nice clean and inviting downtown.

The first Adopt-a-Downtown event will be held on the front lawn of City Hall, January 25, 2020. The kick-off ceremony begins at 9:00am, when Cocoa Beach’s Mayor, Ben Malik will be presented with a golden picker. From 9:30am – 11:30am is cleanup, followed by lunch at Coconuts for the volunteers. A clean-up will be scheduled for the third Saturday of each month from 9:30am – 11:30am. KBB will provide clean-up supplies each month. A donation of $50 is suggested, but not required. (It takes a lot of money to pick up and remove trash. All donations are appreciated). Volunteers from CBMS will help with organization and scheduling. The adoptee should include staff and are encouraged to get customer and resident volunteers involved. Have fun with it. Get your “team together. Have competitions. Take ownership and pride in your downtown. There will be an ongoing record of how many bags of trash have been collected and by what “team throughout the year. We’ll have a big trashy party the first quarter of 2021 to celebrate how we have cleaned up and kept our downtown clean.

ROWING

ON THE BANANA RIVER SPACE COAST CREW CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Crystal Marin, Satellite Beach Resident PHOTOS: from Space Coast Crew Facebook page

Did you know that the first organized collegiate sport in the U.S. was not football or even baseball? It wasn’t golf, tennis or soccer either. It was rowing! Yale and Harvard raced their boats competitively on the Charles River marking the beginning of organized collegiate sports in the United States in 1852. Now fast forward 150 years later, the Space Coast has its very own rowing club right here on the Banana River.

The Space Coast Crew is a Brevard County rowing team that started over 20 years ago when multiple high school rowing teams came together to share resources and equipment. A myriad of teams quickly grew to become one club team. Today the Space Coast Crew club serves both middle and high school scholastic athletes from all over Brevard. There is approximately 150 youth student athlete members between the high school and middle school programs. The Space Coast Crew

is committed to teaching rowing while simultaneously using the natural lessons that come with the sport to teach youth how to work hard, be patient and set goals. The Space Coast Crew is a nonprofit organization that was established in 1996 to promote the sport of rowing among Brevard County students in grades 6th through 12th. There is a professional coaching staff, but they also rely heavily on parents, community volunteers and community donors to operate, manage and maintain their wonderful programs. These students practice and workout every day except for Wednesdays and Sundays. It is a rigorous program for serious athletes. “Space Coast Crew is a growing family that is becoming even more competitive every day. We are looking for young athletes to join us and learn something new that they could use for their whole lifetime,” high school coach Bryan Little said.

The facility they use is Oars & Paddles Park in beautiful Indian Harbour Beach. They row on the Banana River where it meets the Intracoastal Waterway. Their nearly unlimited, well-protected waterway is some of the best in the state of Florida for rowing and paddling, according to their website. The alumni of Space Coast Crew have rowed for colleges such as UCF, Stetson University, and Embry Riddle. Alumni also coach around the state of Florida and the Southeast. The Space Coast Crew high school team rowed in their first Regatta (boat race) of the year in Jacksonville, Florida, where they earned medals in five of the races. Coach Little says they are always recruiting new athletes and welcomes anyone interested in finding out more about Space Coast Crew to go to their website at www.spacecoastcrew.org.

JUST ONE BREATH WRITTEN BY: Tracee Baker Designer/Editor, Cocoa Beach Explorer

With

just one breath Cocoa Beach native, Alli Penovich, calmly sinks into the tranquil blue abyss of the Bali Sea. Returning to the surface not as just a freediver, but a champion freediver. Alli started spearfishing at a young age alongside her father, Joe Penovich. As a teenager, she and her father along with a family friend, Bobby Kim, traveled to Mexico for a spearfishing vacation. It was on this trip Alli discovered her passion for freediving. Little did they know that just a few years later her passion for freediving would earn her the women’s championship title at the 2019 Singapore Depth Championships. In April 2019, Alli reconnected with Bobby at the Blue Wild Ocean Adventure Expo in south Florida. While there, he convinced here to take his freediving instructor course. So, in June Alli became a Level 1 Freediving Instructor for FII (Freediving Instructors International). During her instructor training, Bobby mentioned he was planning to spend five months freediving in Bali, and Alli decided to tag along with Bobby as her freediving coach. Booking a one-way ticket to Bali, she only planned to stay two months to work on increasing her depths, but fate had other plans in mind. Originally not planning to compete, Alli ended up registering for September’s 2019 Singapore Depth Championships but was waitlisted due to the fact she had never competed before. If she got into the competition, she only had one more month to train. “It was the coolest experience. I’ve competed my whole life, so I’m used to being under pressure and having that adrenaline, but I’ve always been raised running or doing triathlons and you use that adrenaline to fuel you. However, in freediving you must remain as calm and relaxed as possible, so I was interested to see how that would go, but I loved it.” The Competition Dives Let this sink in for a moment, 71 meters (approximately 233 feet). That is Alli’s personal best freediving depth which she hit during her second competition in November. 18 | C O C OABE ACHE X PLORER .C OM

What’s Next? Next year Alli is going back to Bali for six months and is planning to work on increasing her depths. Hoping to reach depths of 80+ meters (240+ feet). Alli’s competitive drive overwritten by her sweet smile and punctuated with a slightly shy, contagious laugh makes one wonder just what heights, or in her case depths, she will reach. But one thing’s for sure… it will be somewhere deep, blue and utterly amazing.

There are three different disciplines of competition: constant weight, the diver kicks down and kicks back up; free immersion, the diver pulls themselves down and back up a rope; no fins, the diver performs the breast stroke down and back up.

Alli’s deepest dive is a free immersion dive. She stated, “I find it really relaxing. I love that one.”

“The pressure (water pressure) is definitely intense, but over the course of three months you are able to adapt to it. You do small jumps. It took me three months to get to 71 meters. I’ve been super blessed that I haven’t had too many equalization issues. Equalization issues stop a lot of people because they hit a block. You just have to work through it and see what works for you.”

Children’s Snazzy Sea Stars

v o i c e

CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Deborah Frey, Ed.D.

According to National Geographic, marine biologists are encouraging people to call starfish sea stars because the creatures are not fish. Sea stars are closely related to the sand dollar, sea urchin, brittle stars, and feather stars. They are found in every ocean of the world. There are nearly 2,000 species of sea star, and although the five-armed one is the most familiar and the most common, they can have up to 40 arms. Sea stars vary in size from ¼ of an inch from tip to tip, to more than 25” across. For protection, some sea stars have developed brilliant colors to warm off predators. All sea stars have a bony outer skin that is hard for other sea creatures to bite through. However, crabs, seas turtles, fish, birds, and larger sea stars can eat them whole. Sea stars are one of the few animals on earth that can regenerate their limbs. They have tiny suction cupped “feet” to help them pry open shellfish such as clams, mussels, and oysters. They have an interesting way of feeding. They push their stomachs out of their central body and digest their food outside of their body! Enjoy making some of these cute sea stars with your child to decorate your home.

Salty Sea Stars

Salt Dough Recipe: 2 cups flour bowl 2 cups salt spoon 1 cup water measuring cups Mix the ingredients in the bowl until it begins to form a dough. Then begin to knead the dough until it is pliable and not sticky, adding extra flour, if needed. Form the sea stars using your hands or cut them out with cookie cutters. Roll small pieces of dough between your fingers and use them to outline the top of the starfish. Use a pencil to poke shallow holes in the top of the sea star to create a rough top.

Antioxidants Fight Against Cancer CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Susie Bond, RDN, LDN Health First Pro-Health & Fitness Center

Antioxidants are often called “the bodyguards of health.” They earned this distinction because they protect our cells from destruction by free radicals. Free radicals are highly-charged, oxidized particles that enter our cells, causing damage. This results in a greater risk of developing cancer, cataracts, a suppressed immune system, premature aging, heart disease and stroke. Oxidation is what happens to metal when it rusts. The metal reacts with the oxygen in the air which causes the metal to decompose and deteriorate. When you slice an apple it turns brown. It reacts with the oxygen in the air causing it to oxidize and decompose. The same type of thing happens in our cells when they become oxidized due to free radicals. Our bodies have a built-in defense system against free radicals, but like anything else, there’s a limit to how much they can handle. Excess exposure to free radicals overloads our bodies’ natural defense system, and leads to damage and disease. So, where do free radicals come from? Typically they come from chronic inflammation, ozone, industrial chemicals, excessive ultraviolet light,

22 | C O C OABE ACHE X PLORER .C OM

radiation, cigarette smoke, and air pollution. Antioxidants neutralize or inactivate free radicals, rendering them harmless. We get antioxidants in our diet primarily from fruits and vegetables. There are thousands of different antioxidants that have been identified by scientists. Interestingly, it’s the specific antioxidants in fruits and vegetables that gives them their characteristic colors. For example, the antioxidant beta-carotene gives carrots, cantaloupe, and pumpkin their orange color. Lycopene provides the red that we see in cherries, watermelon, and tomatoes. Anthocyanins are blue-purple, and are found in eggplant, blueberries, and plums. All antioxidants are generally cancer-protective. However, each one has a specific function and

tends to target different parts of the body. Therefore, to get broad protection, you’ll want to consume a variety of colors of fruits and vegetables on a regular basis. Hence, “eat the rainbow” every day! The bottom-line best advice is to get your antioxidants from their original source – that is, real food, rather than supplements. The antioxidants in food work synergistically with other compounds in food to provide the best protection. So, that apple you sliced? If you want to prevent it from oxidizing or turning brown, you can dip the slices in lemon juice. That works to protect the apple because of something in lemon juice that functions as an antioxidant. That “something” is vitamin C!
