EDITOR’S LETTER Wow, it is May already. This year is flying by! Two big dates to remember this month, May 12th is of course, Mother’s Day— don’t forget Mom! Then, we have May 27th which is Memorial Day. Oh yeah, the month of May signifies the last day of school too. Soon, all the kids will be out for the summer. As you can tell by the cover, it is time again for a bit of Thunder on our beaches. The time of year when all the race teams bring their toys out to play. It’s hard to believe, but this year is the 10-year anniversary for Thunder on Cocoa Beach. This year’s race is promising to be the biggest one yet. Inside you can check out all the information about Thunder on Cocoa Beach 2019. Our coverage gives you the new race map, schedule of events, and some other fun information about this year’s race and all the parties. Did somebody say breakfast? We caught up with Christopher Becker, one of the owners of Marilyn’s Cocoa Beach Diner. We asked Christopher a few questions about the new hours, new breakfast menu, and their new expanded lunch/dinner menu.

Also, Tracee and I slipped away to a Caribbean get-a-way. The best part, we only had to travel to Port Canaveral to the brand new Junkanoo Island Kitchen and Rum Bar. Check out the article about them and what you can expect when you go see them.

MALIK’S

FROM THE MAYOR

MESSAGE C O C OA B E ACH U P DAT E

Finally, no more wetsuit— spring is here! It is also time for our annual Lakeland High School Memorial Day surf reunion. I cannot believe it was almost 40 years ago a group of us kids from Lakeland High School made the trip over to Cocoa Beach. Not much to do in Lakeland in the early 1980’s, and we discovered this wonderful slice of paradise known as Cocoa Beach. We all learned to surf that summer at 12th Street South in Cocoa Beach, and we would get up at 3AM and drive over before dawn. We would sleep under the boardwalk hoping to hear the roar of the surf and got into the ocean before first light. There was no Internet, no surf cams, you just got in your car and went for it. Sometimes the surf was flat; sometimes it was really good! The irony that my home surf break is 11th Street South now is pretty amazing! Those summer days were some of the best memories of my life even the awful sand-encrusted car ride back to Lakeland (we were too stupid to realize showers were only a few blocks away). We are all older now, married with kids, tied to careers and family responsibilities, but every Memorial Day weekend we still get together in Cocoa Beach for a surf weekend reunion (albeit on bigger boards, bigger baggies and with less hair). Surfing is not just a sport; it truly is a lifestyle that makes one appreciate the beauty of the ocean. Talk about a great stress reliever; just leave your troubles behind and share some laughs with friends (even beats hitting the heavy bag which has its merits!). Looking forward to seeing the old gang this Memorial Day weekend. Hope all of you enjoy a wonderful holiday weekend and remember all those who 6

served their country and fought for your freedom to enjoy this great nation! Thanks to all of our service members for all their sacrifices. A big thank you to all the residents that participated in the 2019 Health First Mayors’ Fitness Challenge. Cocoa Beach won the title again as the Fittest City in Brevard County with the most minutes of exercise logged in. I did have some extra help from my wife Kelly and 19-year-old son, Chris, who are faithful gym attendees. (She has been hitting the heavy bag a lot as well, I wonder why ☺.) My son goes to the gym twice a day for 2 hours every day. No wonder we go through so much laundry detergent; he goes through 3 shirts a day! Mr. Bill Myers passed away last month, he was a former Cocoa Beach commissioner and WWII veteran. Thank you for your service, and God Bless you and your family. (Mr. Myers would be pleased to know I live by 11th Street South and not South 11th Street ☺!) Thank you for your support and allowing me to serve as your Mayor. Please feel to contact me with any suggestions at bmalik@cityofcocoabeach.com or my cell at 321-794-6668.

MARILYN’S

“There’s something about diners, the lack of pretense, the simple food, the real people, that’s what we were looking for and believe we have created with Marilyn’s. - Christopher Becker

COCOA BEACH

D I N E R Small-town Diner Serving Up Big Taste A short interview with co-owner Christopher Becker

260 N Orlando Ave. Cocoa Beach, FL 32931 Monday | 7am - 2:30pm Tuesday | CLOSED Wednesday | 7am - 2:30pm Thursday | 7am - 2:30pm Friday | 7am - 7pm Saturday | 7am - 7pm Sunday | 7am - 2:30pm

What was the inspiration for Marilyn’s Cocoa Beach Diner? The complete story of the name can be found on the cover of our menu, but additional inspiration came primarily from friends and family telling Quentin Tatro (coowner) he should open a restaurant due to his remarkable ability to cook great tasting food for large numbers of people. Quentin has worked in everything from diners to fine dining. Though he appreciates all types of food, his go-to has always been home cooking or comfort food, the sort of thing found in diners. When we think of diners we usually think of breakfast, that is what we were looking to create from the start, a great breakfast diner. Though we are making that happen now, we did not want to completely disregard the dinner crowd that has come to enjoy Marilyn’s, and we will continue to offer dinner on Friday and Saturday evenings staying open until 7pm.

Tell us a bit about your new breakfast menu and hours. Breakfast in many ways is simple, but when you think about all the extras like cups, saucers, creamer, syrup, jelly’s and juices you begin to realize it is more complex than lunch or dinner. It took us a little longer to get there than we hoped, but yes, we are now serving breakfast from 7am to 11am. What are a couple of the most popular items on the new breakfast menu? Though there are several interesting options, people tend to gravitate to the basics and enjoy The Elvis: three eggs any style (except poached), two meats (everyone seems to really enjoy the link sausage and polish sausage), potatoes and choice of pancakes or French toast. The sweet cream pancakes served with imported real Vermont maple syrup have received a lot of praise. And, our authentic Mexican Green Chile is also really attracting some attention.

Breakfast isn’t the only thing new. What about your expanded lunch and dinner menu. We have 12 sandwiches and 9 burgers on our lunch menu, but the massive club sandwich and open-faced tuna melt seem to be favorites. Our expanded burger menu has the Surfin’ USA with a pineapple ring, American cheese, bacon, grilled onions and teriyaki sauce. Is there anything else you would like to say to our readers? There is something about the smalltown diner where everyone knows each other and says hello. We now have some regulars that we look forward to seeing. We hope to see Marilyn’s become a big part of the local community and give back. We want to reach a point where we can donate to ovarian cancer research in honor of Quentin’s late mother (Marilyn) and sponsor school kids, local events and charities. We want to thank our regulars for embracing us and making Marilyn’s a small part of their lives.

THUNDER ON COCOA BEACH

Ten Years of Offshore Powerboat Racing on the Space Coast Ten years…for some that seems like a very long time, but for Kerry Bartlett, the executive director of Thunder on Cocoa Beach Space Coast Super Boat Grand Prix, ten years have flown by. Maybe it’s due to a passion for extremely fast boats! THEN: ALL GREAT THINGS BEGIN AS A DREAM Rewind to 2010. Thunder on Cocoa Beach literally started with one of the race founders uttering the words, “Wouldn’t it be cool if there was a powerboat race in Cocoa Beach.” Well, yes it would be. From the outside looking in, it would appear the magic powerboat racing fairy waved her magic wand and…poof…powerboat racing in Cocoa Beach. However, in reality, it took months of extensive planning and permitting to make it happen. But it did! In late August of 2010, a Cocoa Beach racing tradition began with the inaugural Thunder on Cocoa Beach Space Coast Super Boat Grand Prix. Looking for a more equitable time of year to hold the offshore races, the team of directors decided to move the race to May, specifically the weekend between Mother’s Day and Memorial Day, for the 2011 and subsequent seasons. Setting up what many Cocoa Beachers now refer to as “Race Weekend.” NOW: A DREAM BECAME REALITY Fast forward ten years and Thunder on Cocoa Beach is now one of the largest offshore powerboat races in the 10

country as the season-opener for the sixrace American Power Boat Association Offshore Championship Series. Of course, the pinnacle events are the races held on Sunday, but race festivities start days earlier with four days and nights of events, street parties, concerts and lots of racing action. The tenth anniversary also holds a big surprise for race fans. Namely, the new, extended race course. In previous years the race course ran from the Cocoa Beach Pier to Lori Wilson Park; however, for 2019 the race course has been extended south down to Coconuts on the Beach with Lori Wilson Park now becoming the start/finish line.

This means more racing action along our beaches and the addition of a new viewing chalet at Coconuts. Space Coast Super Boat Grand Prix has become one of the largest events in Central Florida attracting top race teams from around the world to compete in several classes. Remember those extremely fast boats the race directors have a passion for? Well, the premiere class racing boats can reach speeds of over 175mph. Just imagine the feeling of flying over the waves at 175mph. Anyone else have the famous quote, “I feel the need…the need for speed,” from Top Gun pop into their head?

JUNKANOO ISLAND KITCHEN AND RUM BAR

A Kaleidoscope of Caribbean Flavors in Port Canaveral WRITTEN BY: Tracee Baker

If you’ve spent any time in the Caribbean, especially the Bahamas, chances are you’ve heard the word Junkanoo, but do you know what it is? In the Bahamas, Junkanoo is an annual parade and celebration bursting with a medley of colors and sounds. Well, this isn’t the Bahamas, so why limit the festivities to just once a year. Port Canaveral’s newest dining and drinking destination, JUNKANOO Island Kitchen and Rum Bar, is a daily festival bursting with a kaleidoscope of colors, sights, sounds and of course, tastes—a true feast for the senses! JUNKANOO’s location right on the shipping channel of Port Canaveral is the ideal setting for their Caribbean theme. Gentle sea breezes, frolicking dolphins and upfront views of the cruise ships provide the perfect place to kick

back, catch a game or listen to live music, and enjoy the tastes of the islands on the spacious daiquiri deck and waterside rum bar. OK, admit it, at this point you can already feel yourself unwinding. Doug and I certainly did last Saturday when we dropped by for a late lunch. Owners, Gary Foreman and Rich Hensel, expressed to us their goal of offering a location unlike any other in the Port with a fun, new look and a novel taste. The bright, tropical colors of the décor and the menu’s islandinspired options seem to do just that. When we asked about the inspiration for the food menu, Gary detailed, “We cover ‘key’ food from all the islands. Enjoy appetizers of coconut shrimp, jerk wings, fresh guacamole or conch

chowder, sandwiches like the PorkEtta Cuban or shrimp Bahn Mi and large plates of blackened Wahoo, steamed banana leaf Covina, Churrasco steak or Ropa Vieja.” Ropa Vieja is braised, shredded beef over rice and peas. It is one of the national dishes of Cuba, but it is also popular in other areas of the Caribbean. Rich, with an impish grin, made sure to mention the need to get your rum ration at JUNKANOO. “We have two bars serving up all your favorite adult beverages such as our (soon to be) famous Mojitos, Hurricanes or frozen Daquiris and Pina Coladas.” Put yourself on island time... drop by JUNKANOO in the Port, grab a drink and a bite, and just sit back and enjoy the island vibe. COCOA BEACH HIGH SCHOOL VALEDICTORIANS HAVE GREAT THINGS TO SAY Four students have been named valedictorians of the Cocoa Beach High School class of 2019! Valedictorians are students who have maintained a perfect 4.0 (Straight A) GPA for their entire high school career. This year’s valedictorians are Austin Rush, Jeremy Sabol, Brittany Stanley and Anna Stark. Each of these students have lofty goals after high school. Austin and Anna both plan to attend the University of Florida and major in Engineering. Jeremy’s choices are UF or George Washington University to study international affairs. And Brittany has been appointed to the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs to study astronautical engineering and become a fighter pilot. Each of these students has been involved throughout the school with activities such as National Honor Society, Environmental Club, Spanish Club, JROTC, GSA, SAC Board, Baseball, FBLA and much community service. When asked what their favorite memories of Cocoa Beach are, they included Homecoming, beating Satellite at various events, and celebrating the 50th anniversary of Cocoa Beach High School. Brittany mentioned her favorite memory was “pie-ing” Mr. Walters in the face for a fundraiser while Jeremy’s favorite memory was watching Mr. Walters getting the pie in the face! Just so you know, Mr. Walters raised an awful lot of money to earn that “pie in the face” designation! Each of our valedictorians has advice for our students. Anna says, “Try not to worry about every little thing – what you wear, what you got on that quiz – most of it won’t matter in ten years.” Jeremy said, “push yourself academically and work hard, but have fun with your friends and enjoy high school experiences!” Austin concurs, “Work smarter, not harder; but still work hard.” Brittany reminds students to “make sure to socialize with friends. It relieves a lot of stress.” When asked about last thoughts, Anna says, “GO GATORS!” Brittany and Jeremy both mention the amazing teachers they had throughout their years at Cocoa Beach and that they could not have made it through school without them. Cocoa Beach congratulations and the best of luck to ALL students in the Class of 2019!!

BUILDING CONNECTIONS

MA KING A DIFFER EN C E

www.facebook.com/Freedom7Elem

Our faculty’s Service Heroes Committee, along with our student Safety Patrol team organized a drive to collect items for pediatric patients at Nemours Children’s Hospital. Inspired by our own student, August, and her journey, we have all felt connected and eager to help in any way possible. The drive included a collection of items for the hospital’s activity center including Play Doh, board games, puzzles, and new gym clothing. In addition, we held a card making session before school one morning for students to create cards of encouragement for the patients as well. It is advocacy for collective action such as this that continues to help our students build connections within their local communities in order to make a positive difference.

Children’s

Children’s VOICE Paring Children with Pets CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Deborah Frey, Ed.D.

Congratulations to us! We have a new addition to our family. Layla is an adorable, loving, year-old rescue dog. She appears to be a lab/dachshund mix, but fortunately her personality appears to lean heavily towards a laid-back lab rather than a mini-dictator dachshund. Weighing in at 25 pounds, Layla is well within the guidelines of our condo regulations and fits within the limited space of our home. She is making life more interesting with her squeaky toys and her need for brisk, long walks. HEALTH BENEFITS Pet ownership has mental benefits and is advantageous for adults and children. According to a health survey with 11,000 participates, pet owners made fewer visits to the doctor than non-pet owners. According to Andrew Weil, M.D., “Exposure to animals early in life may help strengthen immune function.” “All allergies have a mind/body component. A childanimal bond can reduce stress and anxiety, thereby decreasing allergic responsiveness.” With all of the electronic devices within easy reach of our children, a pet can provide an avenue to a more active lifestyle. Rough-housing, chasing, running, exercising, and walking a pet gets children off the couch! COPING WITH GRIEF We were unable to have pets until we moved to our Tennessee farm. But it didn’t take us long to begin acquiring a menagerie. I was initially worried about how the short lifespan of the animals would 20

affect our children. Joel’s folksy uncle told me that when children lose a pet, they develop a natural grieving process that will help them cope with losing a human member of their family. Pets can also be a comfort when a child loses a loved one. COMPASSION & KINDNESS In a previous column, I wrote that children need to experience and practice kindness. Pets, especially dogs, love unconditionally which helps children develop compassion and love for another being. Some children find it difficult to connect with other humans, but can bond with a pet. The National PTA Congress stated, “Children trained to extend justice, kindness and mercy to animals become more just, kind and considerate in their relations to each other. Character training along these lines will result in men and women of broader sympathies — more humane, more law-abiding and in every respect more valuable citizens.” “Petting an animal, hearing its soft

breathing, feeling its heartbeat, looking into its sweet eyes, knowing that the pet needs us and that we need the pet creates feelings of love and a corresponding influx of chemicals from the brain that are calming and comforting and create a sense of well-being and happiness,” reported Caryn Sabes Hacker, psychotherapist and author. RESPONSIBILITY Raising responsible children is a challenge in this society. When children are expected to assist with a pet’s daily care, they begin to develop a sense of responsibility. Involving children in the choice of a pet, collars, cages, leashes, toys, and other accessories helps build their decision-making skills. Children and pets are a natural match, but please don’t rush the choice of a pet. Take a serious look at the time you have to devote to an animal, your available indoor and outdoor space, and possible costs involved in health care and feeding. For nearly a year, I’d been

looking at the “Adopt-a-Pet” and “Get Your Pet” websites and had joined several Florida dachshund rescue groups to find the perfect addition to our family. The local human societies have everything from guinea pigs, rabbits, and mice to cats and dogs. If you are seeking a special breed, try Googling the breed and the word rescue to see if any have the pet that you are looking for. Good luck in the search for your new furbaby!
