EDITOR’S LETTER
CONTENTS October 2019
Happy fall y’all! I’m certainly glad September is over; it has been one active month in the tropics with all these storms. It seems like they are just forming one right after another. Fingers crossed it will slow down in October! We got very lucky with Dorian, but it is sad to see what happened to our neighbors in the Bahamas. It is heartwarming to see the relief efforts all around town. It makes me thankful we were spared any major effects and proud to be in a community that is so giving. This month’s issue is brimming with content. Jim Warthen did a great Fall movie preview for us, so you can plan out what movies you want to catch. Next, we have some updated information from the Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier letting us know about all the new happening and fun activities there. Also, make sure to read what our Mayor and our Principal of Cocoa Beach Jr/Sr High School are updating us on this month. Lastly, Deborah Frey, Ed. D., has done a fun Children’s Voice section for us with the history of the jack-o-lantern including some fun ideas we can do with the kids this fall. Thanks to all our advertisers! Without them we couldn’t bring this to you every month. Make sure to let them know you see them in the Cocoa Beach Explorer! I know I say this often, but I am truly thankful for their support. If you have an event coming up or would like to advertise in the Cocoa Beach Explorer, please reach out to me. My contact is info@cocoabeachexplorer.com or call me at 321-759-6064.

MALIK’S
FROM THE MAYOR
MESSAGE C O C OA B E ACH U P DAT E
CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Mayor Ben Malik
Made it to another year; looking forward to turning 55 this month — a little wiser every year and ever so slowly becoming more mature (my wife says it has been a long process!). REFLECTIONS ON HURRICANE DORIAN There were so many acts of kindness and generosity: neighbors helping each other with securing their homes, local restaurants/stores offering food/ water to our city’s first responders and staff who stayed to watch over our city, local hoteliers offering rooms for our first responders/staff while they worked 12-hour shifts. Every reporter I spoke with was amazed at the niceness of the people of our community, and that is what makes a great community! Our city warmly welcomed a mother and her two children from Hope Town, Bahamas, and Dr. Mark Rendell (principal at CBHS) ensured the children were registered for school. Local resident Tracy Dix reached out to me and between Cocoa Beach Kiwanis, Drifthouse Surf Shop (Jesse Hunter/Cheyne Dean/SaraKate Inmon), and Surfers Helping Kids, we ensured the kids had new clothes and supplies ready for the school year! Thank you to Deputy Fire Chief Justin Grimes for sharing your office-turned-dorm room with me. Again, I apologize for my occasional snoring; my wife wasn’t there to tell to tell me to turn on my side. I did turn on my side and promptly rolled off the air mattress setting off the motion-activated lights at 4:45 a.m.! Also, thanks to Commissioner Skip Williams for assisting Cordelle Rolle (local Brevard resident from Abacos, Bahamas) with Bahamas relief supplies. We truly live in a special place! I am pleased many residents decided to evacuate as the storm appeared to be coming right at us (I sent my wife and family including our dog, Holly, to Orlando!). It is concerning that some people continue to stay as we have all seen the devastation caused by Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas and the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Some of the residents that stayed on Ocracoke Island, NC, had to be airlifted out by the Coast Guard as the 7-foot storm surge flooded their homes. Remember during the last two storms (Irma and Dorian) Cape Canaveral Hospital was evacuated; there is no hospital on the barrier island! So, please take heed and seek out shelter inland. You don’t have to go far just get off the barrier island! COCOA BEACH UPDATE The City of Cocoa Beach passed a budget at our last meeting which included a less than 1/10 of a mill from 5.7298 millage to 5.8294 millage (so $582.94 per $100,000 of taxable property value versus $572.98/$100,000). This rate allows the city to continue to invest in infrastructure such as the new force main sewer line on the north end of town (which is working as intended; we had no reports of sewage intrusion into homes of our residents on the north end), to catch up on other deferred maintenance projects, and increase our reserves for emergency events such as hurricanes. Thank you for your support and allowing me to serve as your Mayor. Please feel to contact me with any suggestions at bmalik@cityofcocoabeach.com or my cell at 321-794-6668.

Fall Movie Preview 2019 CONTRIBUTING WRITER: James Warthen
Pumpkin Spice is in the air, Space Coast readers!! Even though it’s been hitting 90 degrees with humidity percentages nearly as high, we’re technically heading into fall! And as any fan of the silver screen knows, this means we’re getting into the 2019 holiday movie season! Following today’s trend, we’ll be following the seemingly never-ending stream of remakes, adaptations, and sequels, with a tiny smattering of new(ish) material: Joker (Oct 4th) The most surprising thing about this movie season is the lack of Super-Hero movies. In fact, the only comic book-based movie on this list is one that’s based not on a hero, but on one of the most iconic comic villains of all time. This film tells the story of just how a normal man might be able to turn into something as abnormal as the Joker. While this version of the Joker won’t connect to the broader DC and Justice League movies that are being made, it certainly draws on the same insanity and mania that makes the traditional Joker who he is. This movie may or may not turn out to be a great Joker-movie, but my prediction is that it may just turn out to be a great movie-movie. Gemini Man (Oct 11) This film is one of the only “original” movies in the pile. I use the term “original” loosely because this flick is almost a re-make of itself before it’s even released. Various stars have been attached over almost 20 years, and it’s Will Smith who finally gets to bring us the story of an aging assassin who is very good at what he does, and is now being hunted by a younger, cloned version of himself. Even when the story or script isn’t the best, Will Smith can usually be relied upon to bring the A-game. So, let’s hope that when he’s working with something that’s been refined over almost two decades, we might get something really fun, and maybe even thought provoking. I’d definitely make room on the schedule for this one.
The Addams Family (Oct 11) If you’re a red-blooded American, I don’t need to explain to you what this film is. Another chapter in the story of our favorite creepy family, this time the story is animated. It features a star-studded voice cast, with talent like Charlize Theron, and takes the Addams Family to New Jersey… which sounds just depressing enough to fit for the Addams. This one is a good, kid-friendly flick, so keep it in the back pocket for a rainy Sunday when the whole family needs a good activity. Jojo Rabbit (Oct 18) As usual, along with the blockbusters and well-known properties, I try to bring at least one lesser-known film to light for you to check out. This fall, my selection is Jojo Rabbit. This is a dark comedy written and directed by Taika Wititi, the man who brought you Thor: Ragnarok (the best of the Thor movies). The story follows a Hitler youth during WWII who realizes his mother is hiding a Jewish person in her attic. Comedy writers often use laughter to stand up to tragic events, and if anyone can bring laughter to this story, it’s Waititi. The film is rated R, and definitely filled with adult language and situations, so this is a movie best suited for late-night hang outs or date nights, but be sure to give it a chance. It’s one of the only originals in the lineup, and we should probably be thankful for any of these when we get them. Terminator: Dark Fate (Nov 1) Another franchise that needs no introduction, this installment of the Terminator franchise marks the return of not only Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator, but also Linda Hamilton and Edward Furlong to their roles from Terminator 2. This film is the first one in almost three decades that has the series creator, James Cameron, involved. And since it also has David S. Goyer as screenwriter (Interstellar, Inception), it seems like everything is lining up just right for a fantastic return to the franchise that has been making the promise for generations that “I’ll be back”.

We have certainly had an interesting start to the school year. We had a smooth opening and had three full weeks of classes under our belt before we had a slight pause with Hurricane Dorian. But, we were very fortunate once again. The hurricane remained off of the coast as she traveled north and spared our community. Our buildings and facilities did not suffer any significant damage whatsoever. While we did miss three days of school, we were able to return to campus and begin classes almost immediately after Dorian’s departure.

I truly hope that you were able to come through the storm without any difficulty or hardship. Even though our community is more than familiar with the challenges of Hurricane Season, it can be an emotional rollercoaster as we watch the weather reports and the tropical updates – especially with a close call such as this one.

As I said earlier, we are back on course and have already settled back in to the school year. But again, we are very thankful that our school and community were not negatively impacted by Hurricane Dorian.

In many ways, the campus looked exactly as it did when we went home before the storm. That is a result of the efforts of our staff. For example, teachers took action to prepare their classrooms and safeguard electronic equipment. The cafeteria staff took measures to secure the kitchen stock and equipment. Our custodial staff took care of the exterior of the campus prior to the event and then cleaned up any and all debris that was on campus after the storm. It was if time stood still while we were away from school.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE JACK-O-LANTERN CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Deborah Frey, Ed.D.
After Christmas, Halloween is the most popular holiday for children. Halloween dates back nearly 2,000 years to the Celtic New Year, marking the end of summer. The Irish immigrants brought Samhain (summer’s end in Gaelic) traditions to the United States in the 1840’s. According to Irish folklore, a Jack-o-lantern would guide lost souls home, and the carved, scary faces would scare away evil spirits. The original Jack-o-lanterns were carved turnips, but when then Irish arrived in the United States, large turnips weren’t readily available, so pumpkins were substituted.
1
The Irish believed that the line between the worlds of the living and the dead were blurred on Samhain and that the ghosts would disguise themselves in human form and knock on cottage doors demanding food or money. If the residents refused the request, it was believed the ghosts would haunt the house. The Celts also believed that dressing up as a ghost would keep real ghosts from taking their soul. Today’s Halloween looks very different from the original Celtic holiday, but is extremely popular with children and adults in the U.S. Below you will find ideas on how to put a coastal spin in some holiday decorations. Some grocery stores carry “white pumpkins, but if you can’t find any, just paint the pumpkin before you carve it.
