We have a couple great surfing events coming up. The first one is the 34th Annual NKF Rich Salick Pro/AM Surf Festival on Labor Day weekend at the Cocoa Beach Pier, and then you don’t want to miss the 6th Annual Salty Sweet & Barefoot Designs Pro/Am Surf Contest behind Coconuts on the Beach on October 5th. This month’s issue has tons of great stuff in it. I sat down with Johnny Nolan, and he caught me up on what is new at Nolan’s Irish Pub and filled me in on his Halfway to St. Patrick’s Day Celebration. Next, I chatted with Rebecca Pletcher with Cocoa Beach High School’s Project Graduation to find out about this organization, and she told me how we can help. Last, I got to meet the great people at Dave’s Tire and share my experience and what I learned about them. Tracee and I would like to thank Deborah Frey, Ed.D. This issue is her one-year anniversary email: of providing us the info@cocoabeachexplorer.com section “Children’s Voice” every month. phone: It is a great feature in our 321-759-6064 magazine, and we truly appreciate her effort and knowledge.
Please make sure to check out our advertisers and let them know you have seen them in the Cocoa Beach Explorer!! They make this magazine possible.

MALIK’S
FROM THE MAYOR
MESSAGE C O C OA B E ACH U P DAT E
CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Mayor Ben Malik
Happy dance for all the parents as the kids are back in school (sorry kids, all good things come to an end!). On that note, drivers please slow down and watch for our children riding bikes/skateboards or walking to school. For God’s sake slow down— we live on the beach; what is the rush!! The national news continues to be disheartening with the recent tragedies in El Paso and Dayton. I am at a loss as to why we cannot have any legislation to keep guns out of the hands of people with mental issues?? It shouldn’t be easier to get a gun than a driving license in terms of some basic requirements. For the record, I support the 2nd Amendment and have recently applied for conceal and carry (get trained on how to operate a firearm safely)! City updates: We recently entered into a contract to fast-track a litany of backlogged facility upgrades with ABM Building Services, LLC that will allow us to replace aging HVAC systems and capital improvements paid out over 15 years and getting everything done in the next year or so. The net savings by the firm is over $230,023 (a 16.5% return on investment!!). Plus, this frees up our limited public works staff to tackle ongoing deferred landscaping projects/beach crossovers, etc., rather than constantly fixing HVAC systems, building repairs, etc.! The new police department building contractor was selected, and hopefully, construction will start soon on the site located next to the new downtown parking garage. This will allow us to consider a much smaller City Hall facility in the future which, if you recall from many public workshops/meetings, would be built on the parking lot where City Hall is now. The former City Hall building will be a green space with a small band shell for live music/events such as the Art Show and Friday Fest! Again, remember we have a summer ban on fertilizers for your lawn; and frankly, if you are on reclaimed water, there is no need to use fertilizers on your lawn! Recently the city has discontinued the use of Roundup on all city-owned facilities including the golf course not only for the benefit of our personnel but also the health of our waterways. We replaced it with an organic weed killer which, of course, is almost four times as much in terms of cost and needs to be applied more frequently, but the safety of our employees and our environment is certainly worth the additional cost! Thank you for your support and allowing me to serve as your Mayor. Please feel free to contact me with any suggestions at bmalik@cityofcocoabeach.com or my cell at 321-794-6668.

Many times, we have been asked how we come up with ideas for our articles. Well, inspiration comes in many ways sometimes when we least expect it. From time to time we know the person the article is about. Other times we get a call or an email letting us know about an event or company that has something interesting going on, and sometimes the stories just crop up from regular day-to-day life. The last case, regular ol’ day-to-day life, was the catalyst for this article. Let’s start with the fact that our son is a newer driver. He realizes gas needs to go in, or the car stops. He has also learned the oil needs to be changed regularly, or Mom and Dad start to harass him. However, his newest “learning moment” came when we discovered he had been remiss in communicating to us that his tires were worn to the
point of wires showing—he was in immediate need of new tires. Well, that was the moment where Dave’s Tire and Automotive came into play. Life brought us together! Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the engine splash shield was hanging down and sometimes scraping the ground due to an incident in the college parking lot, but that is a whole other story for a different day. Dad pulled out the handy zip ties for a quick fix, but something more needed to be done. So, thanks to our son, we got to meet Kayla and Joe Zielinski the new owners of Dave’s Tire and Automotive. After hearing their story, we thought it would be great to share.
Dave’s
TIRES Hometown Service You Can Trust
Kayla and Joe Zielinski
WRITTEN BY: Doug Baker, Editor, Cocoa Beach Explorer
A BIT OF BACKGROUND ON JOE, KAYLA AND THE SHOP
A staple here in town, Dave’s Tire and Automotive was opened back in 1991 by Dave Jacobs. Joe began working with Dave in 2015, and when Dave started thinking about retirement, it was a natural fit for Joe to purchase the business and continue the hometown feel and service that has been around for nearly 30 years. In October of 2017, the transition was complete; Joe and his wife Kayla were the proud new owners of Dave’s Tire and Automotive. A true team, Joe and Kayla work together to run the shop— Joe managing the automotive side and Kayla managing the front office. They currently employee two additional fulltime mechanics.
“
Joe grew up in Michigan but moved to Brevard County thirteen years ago. He built his career working in the welding and automotive repair industries. Kayla, who has lived in Brevard County since the age of 2, spent her years before running the shop’s office as a stay-at-home mother to the couple’s 9-year-old daughter, Addison.
I’m going to tell people what needs to be fixed for their safety. If I notice other needed repairs, I will talk to them about what can wait and what might be more of an annoyance than a needed repair. It’s not about the upsell. ~Joe Zielinski
SERVICES OFFERED AT DAVE’S TIRES
”
Of course, they do tires and brakes…you get that from the name, but what you might not know is they can do basic service for all vehicles— everything from transmissions to complete rebuilds. They can do computer diagnostics, A/C work, and even work on European vehicles. If you are in need of automotive service or routine maintenance for your automobile, you might want to consider giving them a shot. We found working with Joe and Kayla to be a great experience. After I limped our son’s car up to Dave’s Tire, Joe took a quick look at the tires and front splash shield, gave a little chuckle, and fixed it right up. They offer quick service at reasonable rates, and with a college-age driver who still likes to bounce off curbs every now and then having them close by is a godsend. 1866 S. HALFWAY TO ST. PATRICK’S
DAY
Raise a Glass on September 15th WRITTEN BY: Doug Baker, Editor, Cocoa Beach Explorer
What events do you think of when thinking about September? Labor Day, Grandparent’s Day, first day of Fall, or maybe even National Talk Like a Pirate Day, but what about Halfway to St. Patrick’s Day? The popularity of Halfway to St. Patrick’s Day as a new holiday really took off in 2009 when Guinness had its 250th anniversary. The company sponsored live music and other events all over the world as part of the festivities, and among those, “Halfway to St. Patrick’s Day” celebrations sprang up. Sunday, September 15th marks the halfway point to St. Patrick’s Day. If, like me, you are looking for any excuse to grab a beer and celebrate, well what better reason than (halfway to) St. Patrick’s Day. Nolan’s Irish Pub feels the same way, so they are throwing a party— the Halfway to St. Patrick’s Day Celebration. Festivities start at 4pm. Drop in and enjoy live music all afternoon and evening, corned beef and cabbage and fun galore. The evening will also feature the always entertaining Brevard Police and Fire Pipes and Drums. A couple of weeks ago, I stopped into Nolan’s for lunch and a pint and caught up with Johnny Nolan, the owner of Nolan’s Irish Pub. I was being a bit nosy and started asking him about the construction currently underway along the south side of Nolan’s building. I was excited to find out Nolan’s is in the process of adding a brand new, extended patio/outdoor seating area that promises to be one of the nicest outdoor drinking areas around town. My question regarding the construction led into a full-blown discussion (Yes, I probably ended up taking a
bit too much of Johnny’s time. Sorry, Johnny.) about ALL the updates happening at the pub: the furniture, the menu, the entertainment. Johnny and his wife have been busy refreshing the inside of the pub and adding their own Irish stamp to it. There are new, authentic Irish pub tables which were hand-crafted in Ireland along with new lighting fixtures which give the pub that authentic Irish feel. What we, the public, can’t see is the all-new, expanded kitchen which has recently allowed Nolan’s to introduce new items to their food menu. You can find Irish favorites such as fish & chips, bangers & mash, Guinness stew and shepherd’s pie along with staples such as burgers (you must try the caprese burger), sandwiches, wraps and salads. It seems expansion is the theme at Nolan’s right now. A (soon to be finished) expanded patio, an expanded menu, the addition of happy hour (Monday through Friday 3-6pm), and an expanded entertainment calendar. There is entertainment of some form scheduled almost every day. There are always the fun favorites such as Ukulele Night, Trivia Night, Writer’s Night and traditional Irish music sessions. But, let’s not forget that it is football season! Nolan’s shows all the Notre Dame Fighting Irish games live and many of the Premier League soccer games live. You can always see what is going on each day in our Live Music & Events page or on their website www.nolansirishpub.net. Stop in for the party. Stop in for the music. Stop in for the food. Just stop in! And, have a pint for me!

It is certainly no wonder that they are classed as Ireland’s Number 1 Ballad Group! Tickets for this event are very limited and available at the pub or at nolansirishpub.net

End of Life Planning Workshop Sunday, September 8th from 2:00-4:00pm A philosopher once said “No one gets out of this life alive.” It’s true. So, how do we plan for a “good death” where our personal wishes, values and beliefs will be honored? How do we communicate what those wishes, beliefs and values are? Thinking about this part of our lives sooner rather than later, while in the midst of a crisis, is one of the keys. National End of Life Options organization, Compassion & Choices and the local Action Team, The Good Fight-Space Coast, will present a workshop where attendees will have actual planning worksheets and personal help filling them out. FROM THE DESK OF PRINCIPAL RENDELL COCOA BEACH JR/SR HIGH SCHOOL Hello Everyone, We have had a wonderful start to the new school year. Our returning students and our staff came back from summer vacation rejuvenated and refreshed. Our new students arrived with nervous excitement as they began their journey with us. We hit the ground running from the first day of school on August 12th and have not looked back. There is a positive atmosphere on campus and everyone is committed to having another great year. Our athletic teams have already begun competing in various fall sports. We hope to see you in the stands cheering on the Minutemen. I want to let you know that not everyone “took the summer off.” One of our students, Tessa Colaiacovo, participated in the Student Science Training Program at the University of Florida. This is a seven week residential research program for academically talented high school students interested in pursuing a career in the STEM field.
“ Tessa Colaiacovo Photo courtesy of CBHS
There is no doubt in my mind that this was a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity. I learned so much about chemistry and was able to interact with my peers and learn about them and their experiences. I am so thankful that I was able to participate in this type of work so early in life. ~ Tessa Colaiacovo
”
The application process is highly competitive and only a handful of students are selected. Tessa worked directly with UF professors, conducting research in the laboratory and in the field. She also took part in an Honors Seminar in Scientific Inquiry, attended a lecture series and was involved in leadership development activities. Tessa is a Senior in our International Baccalaureate Programme and is one of our top students. She certainly represented Cocoa Beach Junior-Senior High School well in Gainesville. We are very proud of what she has already accomplished and can’t wait to see what the future holds for her. CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Mark J. Rendell Principal of Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School

Keeping Graduating Seniors Safe on Their Big Night of Celebration If you have a child in high school or had one in high school recently, you have probably heard of Project Graduation. If you haven’t heard of it, it is a great organization put together to throw a fun and safe party for our graduating seniors. We reached out to Rebecca Pletcher, Chairperson for Cocoa Beach High School’s Project Graduation, to get some information about the organization and hear about what they have planned for this year. She was nice enough to answer a few questions for us to fill us in.
How did Project Graduation get started? Project Graduation was an event started in the northeast in the 80s in response to drunk driving incidents that left graduating seniors dead on graduation night. Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) got involved and started offering a drug-free, alcohol-free party the night of graduation to keep seniors and the community safe. The idea spread with high schools across the country offering such an event on graduation night. How long has Cocoa Beach High School been doing Project Graduation and how long have you been involved? I have been involved with Project Graduation at Cocoa Beach High School for the last four years. I know that it has been offered at this school for longer than that, but I’m not sure how long it has been in place.
Who implements the Project Graduation for Cocoa Beach High School? This event is put on completely by parent volunteers starting with the fundraising and then the putting together and hosting the actual allnight party on graduation night.
sometime in the fall and a Christmas tree burn in January. We are always looking for sponsors for Project Graduation as a whole or for individual fundraising events. SETTING THE STAGE FOR LEARNING CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Deborah Frey, Ed.D.
As the new school year begins, it’s always a challenge to get children back into a routine. Gone are the leisurely mornings and late bedtimes. Now, it’s early morning alarms and a mad scramble to make it to school on time. As an educator who raised two children who went to two different schools in two different directions, I’ve had my share of hectic mornings. Below are some tips on improving your mornings. THE NIGHT BEFORE: • Prepare snacks and lunches and label the containers/ bags • Designate a shelf in the refrigerator for perishable snacks and lunches • Ask children to empty their backpacks and folders to make sure there are no last-minute projects to complete or permission slips to sign • Children complete all homework and projects (Tips for homework are listed below.) • Children pack their backpacks with all necessary school folders, books, paperwork, and nonperishable food • Children select clothing for the next day and set it out along with their shoes. (I can’t tell you how many times parents brought their children to school late because they couldn’t find a pair of matching shoes!) MORNING: Remove perishable snacks and lunches from the refrigerator and place them in backpacks. Pick up backpacks and go! Now that your mornings are organized, the next challenge for a successful school year is completing homework, in a timely manner. Check to see if your child’s teacher has a homework hotline, a homework webpage, or sends home
a weekly newsletter with regular homework assignments. Elementary students tend to have weekly spelling tests, and teachers usually send home activities and lists to aid in learning the words. Set up a designated area for homework that is under your watchful eyes. My oldest daughter would complete all of her math and language arts assignments for the year in the first month of school and hand in the completed work, each week. However, my youngest daughter presented more of a challenge in homework completion! Letting your child work where there are electronics to distract him/her tends to be counterproductive. Prepare a caddy with homework supplies including pens, pencils, markers, glue, highlighters, sticky notes, index cards, paper, and big erasers. Finally, set up a designated time for homework completion. If the time you choose is too early, your child may be starving and unable to concentrate. If the time is too late, your child may be exhausted and unable to concentrate. These steps can set the stage for a successful school year for your family by minimizing the of stress level and helping children manage their own learning. Please send future column ideas to Dr. Deb at drdeborahfrey@yahoo.com
