It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, everywhere you go…. Christmas lights are going up, the familiar holiday tunes are playing, and we still get to wear our shorts! I love the holidays in Florida. This is what we brag about to all our friends and family up north! This month’s issue has a great Holiday Savings and Gift Guide— make sure to check it out. This year’s guide has plenty of great gift ideas for those hard to shop for people on your list, plus it has multiple options of fun things to do around town this holiday season. Many of the companies in this year’s guide have offered a special savings for our readers. Remember, you must take their ad in with you to get these great savings.

This time of year, it is easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holidays. We all have that last-minute task which must be done, but I want to take a moment to reflect and thank everyone that plays a part in making the Cocoa Beach Explorer magazine happen every month. So, here is a great big THANK email: YOU to our sponsors, info@cocoabeachexplorer.com advertisers, guest writers, and those of you who call phone: and email us with story ideas 321-759-6064 and suggestions. We couldn’t do this magazine without you.
This month, please try to shop local. These small businesses are our friends and neighbors. Let’s keep that in mind as we are checking off everyone on our Christmas shopping lists. As always, thank you for taking the time to read our magazine. Tracee and I hope you have a Merry Christmas, and we remind you to always remember the reason for the season.

MALIK’S
FROM THE MAYOR
MESSAGE C O C OA B E ACH U P DAT E
CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Mayor Ben Malik
Christmas came a little early for us surfers as we have enjoyed some fantastic swells that arrived preThanksgiving and lit up the entire east coast from New York to Palm Beach. Surf was firing with well overhead waves and glassy conditions (could have been a little warmer as I actually had to break out my full suit!). My wife missed our old fireplace (yes, I know we live in Florida!), and I finally broke down and bought an electric LED light fireplace for our house. I must admit it actually looks pretty cool (and it also gives off heat)! Holiday decorations are in full gear, and after two prior electrocution fails involving a staple gun (epic fail!), I learned about the wonders of clips to hang the outside lights! Daniel Colburn, I look at your plug-in laser Christmas lights with envy as Kelly says, “don’t even think about it; get the ladder out!” We are fortunate to live in such a caring community as I see the many civic organizations in our community (Cocoa Beach Kiwanis, Elks, Rotary, Surfers Helping Kids, Surfing 365 for the Community, Women’s Club, School boosters, Surfrider, etc.) willing to step up and assist those who are less fortunate. Many of these organizations do this in fact year round and that is what makes our community great!! Please remember those that are
less fortunate all year round; a simple act of random kindness can go a long way to bettering someone else’s life! The new police station construction will commence soon (long overdue as the working conditions for our City’s finest are completely inadequate). For those that think we should just renovate that old facility, let me remind you that it costs more to renovate an old building than to build new. It is the exact same case as our Cape Canaveral Hospital, which Health First decided was cheaper to build new than to renovate! Within the next year, we will begin to come up with a plan for a new City Hall which will be significantly smaller and located on the west side of the current building where the parking is currently. The east side will become a green space with a small band shell as a gathering area for our events such as Friday Fest, Winter Fest, Art Show, etc.! Lots of great events on the horizon for all of us to enjoy: • Saturday 12/7/2019 – City of Cocoa Beach Christmas Parade from 2pm-4pm (thanks Peter Cunningham and George Leonard for organizing!) • Saturday 12/7/2019 – Cocoa Beach Winter Fest 2pm – 7 pm • downtown Cocoa Beach (thank you Cocoa Beach Main Street!) • Saturday 12/14/2019 – Cocoa Beach Christmas Boat Parade 6pm • Saturday 12/14/2019 – Skydiving Santas at Cocoa Beach Pier 10am – 3pm • Saturday 12/24/2019 – Surfing Santas 8am-12pm at 3 Minutemen Causeway See you in the water for Surfing Santas on Christmas Eve. Merry Christmas and God Bless! Thank you for your support and allowing me to serve as your Mayor. Please feel to contact me with any suggestions at bmalik@cityofcocoabeach.com or my cell at 321-794-6668.

TOWER
OF LEARNING
UNCONVENTIONAL GARDEN WILL GIVE STUDENTS AN UP-CLOSE LOOK AT GROWING FOOD
In late September, Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School added a Tower Garden to their after-school GECKO gardening club in an effort to teach children about hightech plant growth systems. The GECKO Club is comprised of 35 students ranging from third to sixth grade. The Tower Garden is a vertical, aeroponic growing system that can grow up to 20 vegetables, herbs, fruits, and flowers in less than three square feet— indoors or out. This will be a powerful, real-life teaching tool for the classrooms at Students put the finishing touches on their Tower Roosevelt. Gardening is a science, and children will learn Garden, aptly nicknamed Salad Droid. lessons from biology, chemistry and botany. This handson approach to gardening will teach kids that science, and healthy eating, can be cool! According to towergarden.com, plants grow in less time and with fewer resources than soil gardening. In fact, compared to soil gardening, aeroponic gardening has been shown to increase yields by as much as 30% and triple the speed of plant growth while using only 10% of the water and space.
WHAT IS AEROPONICS? An advanced form of hydroponics, aeroponics is the process of growing plants in an air or mist environment rather than soil. Aeroponic systems use water, liquid nutrients and a soilless growing medium.
The Tower Garden at Roosevelt Elementary has been fitted with a grow light which will allow the students to grow fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers year-round. This means bodies (and minds) don’t have to leave their learning environment to grow. The tower, fitted with a dolly, can be easily transported wherever learning is happening— from the classroom to the cafeteria to the playground. This will give students an exciting opportunity for hands-on learning! FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THE TOWER GARDEN FOR SCHOOLS PROGRAM

CHRISTMAS ANGEL WALK IN REMEMBRANCE OF SOPHIE DADEJ
CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Kate Vinson, Ginger, Grapefruit & Rosemary
This past August, my daughter Nora lost one of her best friends, Sophie, to cancer. During Sophie’s brief life here on earth she was an inspiration to all who watched her so bravely fight cancer. Despite such a terrible diagnosis, Sophie kept the cancer at bay for nearly four years before finding her place in Heaven this past summer. Sophie’s mom and little brother, Mary and Gabriel, will be visiting us the weekend of the Cocoa Beach Christmas Parade. As a part of the parade, Nora and I decided to honor Sophie’s memory by holding a Christmas Angel Walk. This is a way for our community to embrace Mary and Gabriel and hopefully help them continue to heal as we enter what is always a tough time for any who have lost a loved one.
Please come out and join us as we walk alongside the GG&R float in order to lift up Mary and Gabriel. I encourage anyone who would like to participate to wear white angel wings. The parade starts at 2 p.m., but anyone who would like to participate in the Angel Walk needs to arrive by 12:30 p.m. For more information about the Christmas Angel Walk visit my event on Facebook at Ginger, Grapefruit & Rosemary. photos: (top) Sophie, (middle) local kids at Ginger, Grapefruit & Rosemary making angel wings for the walk, (bottom) Nora and Sophie at the park last spring 10

A LESSER EVIL
Cocoa Beach Resident Spent Four Months as Saddam’s “Human Shield” in 1990 Early last December as the country was mourning the loss of President George H.W. Bush, an account of one of our neighbor’s history with the past president came to our attention. That neighbor is Glenn Coleman who in late 1990 spent more than four months as a hostage in Iraq as one of Saddam Hussein’s “human shields.” Though it would take us an entire issue of the magazine to do justice to Glenn’s story, we want to give you a brief glimpse at one of your (and our) neighbors. In August of 1990, Glenn, a defense contractor, was in Kuwait on a business trip when Saddam’s army invaded Kuwait City. A former military officer, Glenn knew to rid himself of any exposing paperwork and to try and appear as non-businesslike as possible. However, Glenn and his associates were taken hostage, placed on a bus and driven across the Iraqi border to a Basra prison camp. From the prison camp, Glenn and his fellow “shields” would spend the next four months being transported from one facility to another around Iraq to prevent the bombing of Saddam’s high-value facilities. While held prisoner, Glenn spent time in Baghdad’s Royal Tulip Al Rasheed hotel; Al Qaim, a uranium processing facility near the Syrian border; a plutonium enrichment plant near Baghdad; and the Al Tuwaitha Nuclear Center. During his confinement, Glenn penned a poem to then President Bush and slipped it to someone in the International Red Cross. In early December of 1990, he, along with 155 other hostages, was released and returned home to Andrews Air Force Base on December 10, 1990. Glenn’s poem had in fact reached President Bush and upon his return home, Glenn received a letter from the President acknowledging his poem and its inspiration. Days after the hostages’ return, President George H.W. Bush invited Glenn, his wife, Hope, and five other hostage families to visit the White House.
A LESSER EVIL: MY MESSAGE TO GEORGE H. W. BUSH We all hate war, like Eleanor, And Franklin’s small dog Fala. But what is more, we all abhor, It’s call invoked by Allah. A madman’s dream can hardly seem A vision of God’s voice. Yet nations wait and let their fate Unfold by Saddam’s choice. “Of thee I sing…Let freedom ring” I’ll shout if you reply, With all the might that’s fit and right, To silence this great lie. This human shield will gladly yield, To consequence of guns, If lesser evil is the deal, For freedom’s future sons.
“Hope and I, and five other hostage families, were invited to meet with President and Mrs. Bush two days after I got home to Marlboro. After the meetings (I and the others met with the President and some of his cabinet, and Hope and the other wives met with Barbara and their dog Millie), we all went down to attend the lighting of the National Christmas Tree on December 13, 1990. It’s hard to believe it all happened 28 years ago, but I clearly remember each detail, and especially now, at this time of year, and with the recent passing of the President.” Glenn Coleman, December 5, 2018

COASTAL WINTER HOLIDAYS Although the temperature doesn’t get very chilly in Cocoa Beach, there are still a variety of ways to decorate with shells that bring to mind wintery holidays. Whether you stay in town or visit with children and grands in another area, keep your shell collection handy for these cute, handcrafted projects!
SHELL SNOWMEN There are many cute shell snowmen ideas on the Internet using clam shells, scallop shells, sea urchins, and sand dollars. The key to cute snowmen is to paint the shells completely white, then stack and glue them according to size. The faces and buttons can be added with beads, markers, or paint. Add a bit of felt or cloth to make a snazzy scarf and matching hat!
CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Deborah Frey, Ed.D. Please send future column ideas to Dr. Deb at drdeborahfrey@yahoo.com
CHRISTMAS TREES Child-friendly shell trees are all about the base material. Cardboard and paper mache cones are the easiest to use. You can make your own or purchase the base at a craft store. Cover the cone with tacky glue, roll it in sand, and stand it up to dry. Begin gluing on the shells from the bottom to the top, using bigger shells at the bottom. Place a little sea star or spiral shell at the top.
SHELL-FILLED ORNAMENT Begin with an inexpensive, plastic ornament ball and add about ¾ of an inch of sand. If you add too much sand, the decorations will be hidden. Next, add ½ a teaspoon of glitter, white or clear. Don’t use the fine glitter, as it will stick to the sides and not mix with the sand. Add shells, tiny coastal charms, pearls, and any other items that will remind you of a trip to the beach. Glue the top with either a hot glue gun (adults only) or tacky glue. With a two (2) foot piece of jute or twine, begin wrapping and gluing on the ball from the top of the metal insert to an inch below (onto the ball). Tie the remaining jute/twine to the ball as a hanger. 22
