EDITOR’S LETTER And just like that… the first month of 2020 is over! January flew by in the blink of an eye. For us January wasn’t the perfect start to the new year. We had one of our computers crash, and it needed a new hard drive. Obviously, this set us back with having to download all our programs and settings again. Thank goodness, we had a backup of all our data. Anyway, Tracee and I are going to hit the reset button and start this year over fresh beginning in February. Speaking of February, that ushers in Valentine’s Day. I did a search to get a little history on Valentine’s Day. Of course, I’m only pulling a couple sentences, but this is what I found on Wikipedia:

Valentine’s Day, also called Saint Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is celebrated annually on February 14.

The day first became associated with romantic love within the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the 14th century, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.

In 18th-century England, it grew into an occasion in which couples expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery treats, and sending greeting cards (known as “valentines”).

Then BOOM, retailers got in on the deal, and now it has grown into the craziness we know today. Hope everyone has a great February! Remember to shop local this Valentine’s Day. See you around town.

MALIK’S MESSAGE

COCOA BEACH UPDATE FROM THE MAYOR

CONFESSIONS OF A BABY BOOMER

HAVING BEEN BORN IN 1964, I JUST MADE IT

CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Mayor Ben Malik

I grew up in an era of pre-cell phones/ internet/personal computers, GPS and digital media, etc. My children will never know the struggle of having to read a map, go to a library to do research, type a paper on a typewriter with whiteout (no spell check, one needed a dictionary), and look for payphones when you needed to call someone away from home!! It was a simple time, and I got to see some amazing concerts (Rolling Stones/Van Halen-1981, The Police-1983 (both shows in Orlando), and Rush at the Lakeland Civic Center in 1982, RIP Neil Peart), and ticket prices were about $16!! Lest I forget some great concerts while attending UF in the 1980s: Talking Heads/INXS/Stevie Ray Vaughan/Peter Tosh. Over the course of my early working life, I have had some really interesting jobs. My first bank job out of college in West Palm Beach was not exactly a high paying gig as it was during the 1986 recession, and I was always looking for part-time second jobs (needed to payoff student loan debt, and I guess I have a history of working two jobs ☺)! I took a side job as a surf reporter for Surfline. I was one of the first surf reporters for Surfline during pre-internet/cell phone

days of course. I was paid $10/report to provide a phone-based surf report for Reef Road in Palm Beach. Surfers would call 976-SURF and pay $1.50/call to get a recorded phone surf report for the day. I would go twice a day (before work and during my lunch hour) to answer a payphone at the Publix shopping center in Palm Beach. I had to wait for the Surfline staff to call the payphone, so I could deliver my report! It was stressful to drive over the bridge, scope out the surf and await a payphone call at a Publix store in Palm Beach! You kids have no idea how you have it made with internet reports/wave cams, etc… The worst part-time job I had was a Domino’s Pizza delivery driver. Working nights and weekends with no cell phone/ no GPS/trying to find an address on a map in the dark with no phone, fun times… Best part-time job was working as the dessert server at a French restaurant in Palm Beach. I got to use my French language skills, enjoy some fine cuisine, and after work, we got to hit the Heineken on draft!

Work ethic is something that both my father instilled in me as my wife’s parents did for her. As parents, we have instilled not only work ethic for our children but also empathy and compassion. My daughter is graduating UCF with honors and is applying to get into the UCF Master’s program in Clinical Psychology (while working part-time and putting herself through school); my son is working part-time and completing his AA at Eastern Florida while maintaining a 3.4 GPA! Teach your kids the importance of work ethic, spend time with them (it is the greatest treasure you can give them), and teach them compassion! Remember to log your minutes: The 2020 Health First Mayors’ Fitness Challenge begins Saturday, February 1st through March 27, 2020. Registration began December 9th and went through January 8, 2020. Thank you for your support and allowing me to serve as your Mayor. Please feel free to contact me with any suggestions at bmalik@cityofcocoabeach.com or my cell at 321.794.6668

Can You Improve Your Relationship with Money? In your life, you will have all sorts of relationships – with your family, your friends, your co-workers, and even with civic groups and charitable organizations you support. But have you ever considered another key relationship – the one you have with money? Of course, this type of relationship has several aspects, such as saving, spending and investing. And your fellow Americans clearly face some challenges in these areas. For example, in a recent survey by financial services firm Edward Jones, only 21% of respondents reported that they feel happy when thinking about saving money, while 92% said they see room for improvement in their financial health. Yet only one in four plan to improve their spending habits. Furthermore, just 26% said retirement was a top savings priority. If you share some of these concerns, what should you do? Here are a few suggestions:

Identify your money-related emotions. Try to recognize the emotions you feel in connection with saving and investing. Do you get nervous about spending? Does putting away money for the future give you satisfaction or not? Do you worry that you don’t know how much you should be investing, or whether you’re investing in the right way? Clearly, these types of questions can cause some anxiety – and, even more importantly, they may lead you to make poor decisions. Emotions are obviously closely tied to money – but they really should not play a big role in your spending, saving and investing choices.

Develop a financial strategy. By developing a sound financial strategy, you can reduce money-related stress and help yourself feel empowered as you look to the future. A comprehensive strategy can help you identify your goals – a down payment on a new home, college for your children, a comfortable retirement, and so on – and identify a path toward reaching them. Your financial strategy should incorporate a variety of factors, including your age, risk tolerance, income level, family situation and more. Here’s the key point: By creating a long-term strategy and sticking to it, you’ll be far less likely to overreact to events such as market downturns and less inclined to give in to impulses such as “spur of the moment” costly purchases. And without such a strategy, you will almost certainly have less chance of achieving your important goals.

Get an “accountability partner.” Your relationship with money doesn’t have to be monogamous – you can get help from an “accountability partner.” Too many people keep their financial concerns and plans to themselves, not even sharing them with their partners or other family members. But by being open about your finances to your loved ones, you can not only avoid misplaced expectations but also enlist the help of someone who may be able to help keep you on track toward your short- and long-term goals. But you may also benefit from the help of a financial professional – someone with the perspective, experience and skills necessary to help you make the right moves.

Like all successful relationships, the one you have with money requires work. But you’ll find it’s worth the effort. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

Are YOU invested properly? Isn’t it time for a SECOND OPINION!!

NO LAN 'S IRISH PUB Authentic Atmosphere Irish Owned & Operated

Can You Help Your NEIGHBOR? We recently received an email from a Cocoa Beach resident, Terry Kohl, with a request for help on a great idea she has for beach clean ups. We thought it would be a good idea to share this message with the entire community and ask for your assistance in helping Terry. TRA DITIONAL FISH AND CHIPS

I regularly walk the beach near the pier and pick up trash as I go. Recently while collecting trash, it dawned on me that I was using a plastic food store bag to do so....what irony! The plastic bag I was using is as much a contributor to the problem as the trash I was picking up! I started researching reusable Keep Brevard Beautiful bags but could not find any. My idea for a solution is to collaborate with a local store, such as Publix, and have reusable KBB bags made that are focused on trash pick up. We could even take this a step further and have an annual competition for the bag artwork. The bags would be used by locals and visitors for trash pick up and perhaps even become collectibles (similar to my older Rich Salick shirts!). Can you help me find a path to making this happen? Any suggestions your reading audience have would be greatly appreciated.

COCOA BEACH GRADUATION RATE REACHES 96%, AN ALL-TIME HIGH! CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Mark J. Rendell, Principal of Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School

I am excited to share with the community some great news. The State Department of Education just released the “on-time” graduation rates for 2019, and we earned our highest graduation rate ever at 95.7%! This represents an increase of more than five points, as our 2018 graduation rate was 90.6%. It is also above the district average which is 88.3% and the state average which is 86.9%.

This significant increase, and overall high performance level, are the results of everyone working together. Each of us play a part. Students, parents, teachers and other school staff members have all worked very hard, and these results validate their efforts. We also benefit from very strong support from our community. Our three elementary schools, Cape View,

Freedom Seven, and Roosevelt, share in this success. They provided the students with the solid foundation they needed to be successful. Everyone in Cocoa Beach should be proud of this accomplishment! Here is a look at our graduation rate over the past five years.

Congratulations to the Class of 2019 and to our entire community for these great results!

Cocoa Beach’s Community Theater Celebrates 60 Years CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Kate Schwartz, Surfside Playhouse

Did you know we have a thriving community theater right here in Cocoa Beach? There’s no need to cross bridges to experience excellent live theatrical productions. Celebrating its 60th anniversary, Surfside Playhouse at 301 Ramp Rd. (Brevard Ave. and 5th Street S.), is a 250-seat theater which produces six main shows a year, including musicals and non-musicals, as well as youth programs, Improv classes for adults, and a fulllength playwriting contest. It has also hosted surf films, concerts, TedX Cocoa Beach and the Murder on the Space Coast podcast. Maybe you saw Surfside’s production of Young Frankenstein, a murder mystery, or the Youth Players production of Annie. Repeat patron or not, you are invited to enjoy the upcoming shows at Surfside. Opening in March is Pirates of Penzance, then Sex Please, We’re Sixty in May, followed in June by The Three Musketeers Fractured, written and directed by

Surfside’s Artistic Director, Bryan Bergeron. For tickets and more information, go to the website www.surfsideplayhouse.com. There is a strong vibe of beachside hospitality and welcome for audience members and volunteers alike. Actors (themselves volunteers), scenery builders, costume makers, ushers, and others find it fulfilling (and fun) to join people from all walks of life to create something entertaining and uplifting for the community. If you’d like to volunteer, call Surfside Playhouse at 321-783-3127 and leave a message. Someone will call you back and chat about how you can get involved. Or you can message the Surfside Playhouse Facebook page.

The

Children’s

v o i c e

With the emergence of “helicopter” parents, we have too many young adults whose parents have worked hard to make everything easy for their children. They buy admittance into universities and defend their children against teachers and principals. These parents do all of the chores, buy expensive and unnecessary gifts, and center their lives around children who usually end up feeling entitled and ungrateful for what they’ve been given. On the other side are parents who are so wrapped up in their own drama that they don’t make time for their children, resulting in defiant and irresponsible behavior. Finding a balance between protecting your child and helping them grow to be self-reliant requires planning and attention. An article in Psychology Today outlines the errors that overprotective parents make as their children grow, such as providing little opportunity for children to make their own decisions and solving all of their children’s problems for them, without consulting them. Here are some steps that can be taken at different age levels to foster self-reliance in your child.

Raising Strong, Independent, and Self-Reliant Children CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Deborah Frey, Ed.D.

I’ve been working on a eulogy for a friend who recently died. As I reflect back on her life, I realize that

her children are independent and immensely talented. They inherited their talent from their mother, but the independence was developed because of their mother’s lack of sensible parenting skills. This deficit in parenting also resulted in adults who are guarded and not sure of their own self-worth.

Provide choices and allow your child to make his/her own decision, even if it is not the one you would make. For example, let your child choose clothing and shoes, even if you don’t like the colors, style, or the way they are matched. If your child gets a blister from not wearing socks, then next time, the child will either wear socks or choose to wear different shoes. If your child is freezing while waiting for the bus because wearing a coat is “uncool,” then help him/her find an alternative like wearing layers and a hoodie. Set limits and consequences on play and the use of electronics. If your child exceeds those limits, then follow through with the consequences. Your child might continue to exceed those limits in the future, but it is his/ her choice to do so, weighing the consequences of his/her actions. Set study and homework parameters, expectations for good grades, and consequences for poor ones. If your child refuses to study and complete homework, let him/ her reap the consequences from school and your home without asking the teacher for extra credit work or extended time to finish. Follow through on consequences,

but make sure they are reasonable and that your child has a path to regain privileges and control.

with an opportunity to struggle to earn success and remember, it is about the child’s success, not your own.

Help your child find an interest that challenges him/her. It can be a sport, arts-related, games, or anything else that intrigues your child and provides problem solving opportunities. Does he want to build a difficult Lego starship? Then provide the materials, and a little guidance, but make it his project, not yours. Does she want to be the pitcher on her baseball team? Then provide time and game equipment for her to throw 100 pitches, a night. Provide your child

I sum up this topic with a direct quote from “Parenting: Raise Independent Children”: “Your children can’t take responsibility for their achievements and successes unless they are willing to take responsibility for their mistakes and failures.”

Mini

Road Trip

54 Years of Seafood Festival Fun WRITTEN BY: Doug Baker, Editor, Cocoa Beach Explorer

Looking for a little get-a-way that’s not too far away! The Grant Seafood Festival is the perfect mini road trip. With a little less than an hour drive, you can visit one of Florida’s best seafood festivals. Mark your calendars for the 54th Annual Grant Seafood Festival on February 29th and March 1st. Free admission; free parking; over 125 craft exhibits; live, continuous entertainment along with a vast menu of delicious seafood makes this a weekend no one wants to miss! This year, the festival is providing free parking at the Valkaria Airport with a free shuttle service running all weekend. Festival food and drink tickets can be purchased for $1.50 each, with most items ranging from 1-7 tickets. Tickets can be purchased with cash, credit or debit on site and at the Valkaria Airport parking area. The Grant Seafood Festival is a time-honored tradition like none other, but what really sets it apart is the total commitment from the

Grant community—the festival is run 100% by volunteers and many booths are made up of family members, often having several generations working alongside one another. All organizing, purchasing, preparation, cooking and serving is accomplished by community members. They are proud of their community and this festival is a wonderful testament to that. All proceeds from the Grant Seafood Festival are put back into the community of Grant— the projects include the Grant Seafood Festival Scholarship Fund, Grant Community Library, Grant Historical House and The Grant Community Center. So, take a little drive over the bridge, enjoy some of the best seafood in Florida, and help keep the great Grant Seafood Festival tradition alive! Hours for this year’s event are Saturday, February 29th from 9am to 7pm and Sunday, March 1st from 9am to 5pm. For more information go to www.grantseafoodfestival.com
