EDITOR’S LETTER And just like that… the first month of 2020 is over! January flew by in the blink of an eye. For us January wasn’t the perfect start to the new year. We had one of our computers crash, and it needed a new hard drive. Obviously, this set us back with having to download all our programs and settings again. Thank goodness, we had a backup of all our data. Anyway, Tracee and I are going to hit the reset button and start this year over fresh beginning in February. Speaking of February, that ushers in Valentine’s Day. I did a search to get a little history on Valentine’s Day. Of course, I’m only pulling a couple sentences, but this is what I found on Wikipedia: •
Valentine’s Day, also called Saint Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is celebrated annually on February 14.
•
The day first became associated with romantic love within the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the 14th century, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.
•
In 18th-century England, it grew into an occasion in which couples expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery treats, and sending greeting cards (known as “valentines”).
Then BOOM, retailers got in on the deal, and now it has grown into the craziness we know today. Hope everyone has a great February! Remember to shop local this Valentine’s Day. See you around town.

LOCAL BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
Jerry’s Action Auto Repair WRITTEN BY: Doug Baker, Editor, Satellite Beach Explorer
T
his month’s business spotlight is on Jerry’s Action Auto Repair.
Jerry’s Action Auto Repair, off South Patrick Drive, has been a fixture in Satellite Beach since 1994. Today, the location encompasses two buildings: the storefront directly on South Patrick Drive and the repair bays directly behind it. However, back when Jerry Davis first opened the repair shop, it was only in the back building. In 2000, Jerry purchased the old Amoco gas station that was on the front part of the property, remodeled, and opened the storefront along South Patrick Drive in 2001. Jerry was not only a great mechanic but he was also quite the handyman. Throughout the years, he did most of the upkeep work (such as painting and installing his own sprinkler system) himself on the buildings and property. Taking this kind of pride in his business is part of what led to the growth of Jerry’s Action Auto Repair. Last year in 2019, Jerry Davis was ready to step back and let someone else take the reins. In February, Isaque Faria took those reins when he purchased the business from Jerry. This month, we celebrate Isaque’s oneyear anniversary of owning Jerry’s Action Auto Repair. Isaque’s dream of owning his own shop was a long time in the making. Earning an associate degree in business, Isaque then tackled the auto mechanic industry spending eleven years working in the industry (five as a Ford technician and six at an independent shop) before making the leap to shop ownership.
Isaque Faria, owner of Jerry’s Action Auto Repair
Isaque’s education and experience have served him well in his new shop ownership adventure. During his first year as the new owner of Jerry’s Action Auto Repair, Isaque has achieved growth for the shop. He attributes this to two important things: making everyone feel comfortable with their experience and educating

the customers on what they are doing to the vehicles. Also important to maintaining the business and achieving that growth is the fact that Isaque has been able to keep almost all the original staff from Jerry’s Action Auto Repair which equates to the same great quality service everyone has come to expect. So, for your next oil change, new set of tires, or if that dreaded check engine light comes on, drop into Jerry’s Action Auto Repair and let them show you what they can do! As a full-service auto repair shop, they can do it all from oil changes to engine repair. Their motto says “…where ACTIONS speak louder than words” and they stand by that motto.

MAYOR’S MESSAGE
SATELLITE BEACH UPDATE FROM MAYOR CATINO
FLORIDA LEGISLATORS WANT TO TAKE AWAY LOCAL AUTHORITY OVER VACATION RENTALS
CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Mayor Frank Catino
The battle over short-term vacation rentals has become an annual tug of war in Tallahassee. Efforts to limit local rental regulations, particularly in beach towns that have seen proliferation of large rental homes in recent years. State legislative efforts to limit local rental regulations have faced fierce opposition from cities and counties from across the state. Residents complain that living next to the rental homes is equivalent to living next to a hotel. I believe homes are people’s largest investment in their life and when you buy in a single-family residential neighborhood, that’s supposed to mean something. They are a detriment to the City of Satellite Beach and the renters’ market, and I share many of the concerns about rentals impacting the character of communities and driving out full-time residents. Older neighborhoods without homeowner’s associations are particularly at risk of becoming one vacation rental after another. The City of Satellite Beach is going to battle for our community. We feel at the local level we are the closest to the people, and I think we have a good understanding of what’s needed in our zoning code and ordinances. We need to stick with home rule authority that ensures our City is effectively and efficiently providing for the wishes of our citizens.

54 Years of Seafood Festival Fun
Mini
Road Trip
WRITTEN BY: Doug Baker, Editor, Cocoa Beach Explorer
Looking for a little get-a-way that’s not too far away! The Grant Seafood Festival is the perfect mini road trip. With a little less than an hour drive, you can visit one of Florida’s best seafood festivals. Mark your calendars for the 54th Annual Grant Seafood Festival on February 29th and March 1st. Free admission; free parking; over 125 craft exhibits; live, continuous entertainment along with a vast menu of delicious seafood makes this a weekend no one wants to miss! This year, the festival is providing free parking at the Valkaria Airport with a free shuttle service running all weekend. Festival food and drink tickets can be purchased for $1.50 each, with most items ranging from 1-7 tickets. Tickets can be purchased with cash, credit or debit on site and at the Valkaria Airport parking area. The Grant Seafood Festival is a time-honored tradition like none other, but what really sets it apart is the total commitment from the
Grant community—the festival is run 100% by volunteers and many booths are made up of family members, often having several generations working alongside one another. All organizing, purchasing, preparation, cooking and serving is accomplished by community members. They are proud of their community and this festival is a wonderful testament to that. All proceeds from the Grant Seafood Festival are put back into the community of Grant— the projects include the Grant Seafood Festival Scholarship Fund, Grant Community Library, Grant Historical House and The Grant Community Center. So, take a little drive over the bridge, enjoy some of the best seafood in Florida, and help keep the great Grant Seafood Festival tradition alive! Hours for this year’s event are Saturday, February 29th from 9am to 7pm and Sunday, March 1st from 9am to 5pm. For more information go to www.grantseafoodfestival.com

Can You Improve Your Relationship with Money? In your life, you will have all sorts of relationships – with your family, your friends, your co-workers, and even with civic groups and charitable organizations you support. But have you ever considered another key relationship – the one you have with money? Of course, this type of relationship has several aspects, such as saving, spending and investing. And your fellow Americans clearly face some challenges in these areas. For example, in a recent survey by financial services firm Edward Jones, only 21% of respondents reported that they feel happy when thinking about saving money, while 92% said they see room for improvement in their financial health. Yet only one in four plan to improve their spending habits. Furthermore, just 26% said retirement was a top savings priority. If you share some of these concerns, what should you do? Here are a few suggestions: •
Identify your money-related emotions. Try to recognize the emotions you feel in connection with saving and investing. Do you get nervous about spending? Does putting away money for the future give you satisfaction or not? Do you worry that you don’t know how much you should be investing, or whether you’re investing in the right way? Clearly, these types of questions can cause some anxiety – and, even more importantly, they may lead you to make poor decisions. Emotions are obviously closely tied to money – but they really should not play a big role in your spending, saving and investing choices.
•
Develop a financial strategy. By developing a sound financial strategy, you can reduce money-related stress and help yourself feel empowered as you look to the future. A comprehensive strategy can help you identify your goals – a down payment on a new home, college for your children, a comfortable retirement, and so on – and identify a path toward reaching them. Your financial strategy should incorporate a variety of factors, including your age, risk tolerance, income level, family situation and more. Here’s the key point: By creating a long-term strategy and sticking to it, you’ll be far less likely to overreact to events such as market downturns and less inclined to give in to impulses such as “spur of the moment” costly purchases. And without such a strategy, you will almost certainly have less chance of achieving your important goals.

Get an “accountability partner.” Your relationship with money doesn’t have to be monogamous – you can get help from an “accountability partner.” Too many people keep their financial concerns and plans to themselves, not even sharing them with their partners or other family members. But by being open about your finances to your loved ones, you can not only avoid misplaced expectations but also enlist the help of someone who may be able to help keep you on track toward your short- and long-term goals. But you may also benefit from the help of a financial professional – someone with the perspective, experience and skills necessary to help you make the right moves.

estled in the corner of Skyview Plaza, 246 Hwy A1A, just south of the Pineda Causeway, is Beachside Arts and Beyond (BSAB)—the expressive vision of owners Deborah Conti (Creative Director) and Stephen Long (Science Director). This fun, colorful and eclectic community-based studio is brimming with creativity. BSAB features a stunning art gallery, with new shows featuring local artists. In our three large classrooms students can learn and explore their artistic talents. On any given day, the students can participate in a variety of handson opportunities: glass bead making, nighttime acrylic pours sessions, daytime beginner/ intermediate watercolor, pencil drawing, acrylic and mixed media, and weekend weaving classes. We are known for our jewelry making workshops instructed by local and international teachers. Diverse student experience levels are welcome. BSAB provides a positive and supportive environment where people can gather to create art, bond as a community, and sell their art works. Our mission is to foster community artistic, cultural and intellectual growth. Satellite Beach and greater Brevard County have a diverse and amazing wealth of intelligent, talented, and creative citizens. To serve this

Original art works, prints, giclee, one-of-a-kind jewelry, upcycled goods and distinctive finds are available to purchase. Fine art is a perfect home centerpiece, accent or unique gift. For artists that need a place to work, BSAB offers “creative space” temporary work areas for artists that want to drop in and create. Our “Beyond” offerings include monthly Science Lectures, Yoga in the Art Gallery, local author book signings, occasional indoor market events, private parties, girl’s night out, or any other creative idea you can dream up. The BSAB gallery is currently filled with the captivating wood sculptures of Judith Copeland, a Melbourne Beach resident who “…discovered the pleasure of working with wood…” while in college in Tallahassee. The gallery perimeter is filled with over twenty sculptures. We are also featuring works by renown local artist Nancy Dillon. Come visit us! Come peruse and even buy the works of over thirty Associate Artists and our Resident Artists Gretchen Ten Hunt and Deborah M. Conti. Happy New Year!!! It’s hard to believe the second semester of this school year has begun. Thank you to the Satellite High School community for their generosity and support of our great school. We had an exciting first semester and look forward to a great second semester as well. Students were welcomed back with a grade level college and career assembly reminding each class of their next steps in their educational journey. Students had a chance to hear from their peers a grade level above them as to what they should expect moving into the second semester, the necessary preparations they need to take for the college admissions process, building a quality academic course transcript, military information and much more. SHS students continue to perform at an extremely high level both in the classroom and in their extra-curricular activities. Winter sports are in full swing and our spring sports begin in the coming weeks. Come out and see our students in action!
