EDITOR’S LETTER And just like that… the first month of 2020 is over! January flew by in the blink of an eye. For us January wasn’t the perfect start to the new year. We had one of our computers crash, and it needed a new hard drive. Obviously, this set us back with having to download all our programs and settings again. Thank goodness, we had a backup of all our data. Anyway, Tracee and I are going to hit the reset button and start this year over fresh beginning in February. Speaking of February, that ushers in Valentine’s Day. I did a search to get a little history on Valentine’s Day. Of course, I’m only pulling a couple sentences, but this is what I found on Wikipedia:
•
Valentine’s Day, also called Saint Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is celebrated annually on February 14.
•
The day first became associated with romantic love within the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the 14th century, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.
•
In 18th-century England, it grew into an occasion in which couples expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery treats, and sending greeting cards (known as “valentines”).
Then BOOM, retailers got in on the deal, and now it has grown into the craziness we know today. Hope everyone has a great February! Remember to shop local this Valentine’s Day. See you around town.

COCOA BEACH GRADUATION RATE REACHES 96%, AN ALL-TIME HIGH! CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Mark J. Rendell, Principal of Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School
I am excited to share with the community some great news. The State Department of Education just released the “on-time” graduation rates for 2019 and we earned our highest graduation rate ever at 95.7%! This represents an increase of more than five points, as our 2018 graduation rate was 90.6%. It is also above the district average which is 88.3% and the state average, which is 86.9%.
This significant increase, and overall high performance level, are the results of everyone working together. Each of us play a part. Students, parents, teachers, other school staff members, have all worked very hard, and these results validate their efforts. We also benefit from very strong support from our community. Our three elementary schools, Cape View,
Freedom Seven, and Roosevelt, share in this success. They provided the students with the solid foundation they needed to be successful. Everyone in Cocoa Beach should be proud of this accomplishment! Here is a look at our graduation rate over the past five years.
Congratulations to the Class of 2019 and to our entire community for these great results!

This month the City hosts its annual sea oats planting project, a volunteer effort that sees the planting of 10,000 sea oats from Cherie Down Park southward along the dunes. Since 2005, the City has planted over 100,000 sea oats that are acquired from Brevard County. Sea oats are a hardy, salt and drought tolerant grass commonly found in the upper dunes of a beach. They are native to the U.S. southeast, anywhere from Virginia to Florida and across the Gulf region down into Mexico. Sea oats have extensive deep root systems that act as rebar would in a concrete building that help to stabilize a dune system. This reinforces a beaches natural defense against storm surge, wave action and tidal flooding. As an example of green infrastructure, sea oats provide a natural solution to beach stabilization and are so important to maintaining beach structures that they are protected under state law. The City of Cape Canaveral’s recently released Vulnerability Assessment, completed after months of analysis and outreach by City Staff and the East Central Florida Regional Planning Council (ECFRPC), highlights the threat of rising

sea levels and coastal storms in our area. Funded by a grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) through their Florida Resilient Coastlines Program (FRCP) — NOAA approved program — the report created by the ECFRPC examines the impacts of sea level rise and flooding specifically within Cape Canaveral. The report employs several models developed by the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and NOAA to project possible sea level rise scenarios and the respective socio-economic impacts on the City. Timeframes evaluated as part of the report include 2040, 2070 and 2100. According to the report’s findings the City can expect and should plan accordingly for 5.15 to 8.48 feet of sea level rise by 2100 with ever increasing beach erosion and hurricane activity. In light of these issues, the planting of sea oats is one of the easiest and most economically feasible coastal protection projects presently available. Therefore, the City intends to keep this annual tradition in order to increase beach habitat, coastal resiliency and overall sustainability. Thank you to all who volunteer for this important project!

Annual Festival to Celebrate Leap Day with New Community Cook-Off CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Molly Thomas, Cultural and Community Affairs Director, City of Cape Canaveral
It only comes around every four
years, which is cause enough for celebration; but this year the City will use this rarest of days to celebrate its 7th annual Founders’ Day Spring Festival and raise funds for the Cape View Elementary P.T.O.! Each spring, the City of Cape Canaveral comes together to celebrate all of the things that make this community such a great place to live, work and play. Founders’ Day is where we, as a City, take a moment to recognize the individuals that helped shaped this community into what it is today. Featuring music, food, free family activities, and a showcase of local
businesses and history, Founders’ Day offers a little something for everyone and each year it seems to get bigger and better. This year’s Leap Day event, will be no exception!
30 contestants at $17 per entry. Those attending the event will be the judge of who makes the best spicy, best cheesy, most unique and of course—the Best Dip Ever. Sample kits will cost just $5 each!
Last year’s event featured a successful Chowder Cook-off that raised money for Cape View Elementary P.T.O. and with this year’s celebration situated at the half-way point between the Super Bowl and National Chips + Dip Day, it only makes sense to do a community dip-off instead! This people’s choice competition is open to everyone who thinks they make the #BESTDIPEVER. Registration is limited to the first
In addition to the Leap Day DipOff, V.F.W. Post #10131 has
offered to host a Bingo game in the pavilion during the event — the proceeds of which will also benefit Cape View Elementary P.T.O. With free kid’s activities, a wiener dog race and all of its usual amenities, this year is shaping up to be the best Founders’ Day to date!
Founders’ Day Spring Festival + Leap Day Dip-Off February 29th @ Manatee Sanctuary Park (701 Thurm Blvd.) 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Free admission, family + leashed dog friendly!
