EDITOR’S LETTER appy new year! We want to wish each of our readers a healthy, happy and prosperous 2020. Take a moment just to focus on your plans for the new year. Set some new goals for yourself, or maybe just revisit some goals from 2019 that might have fallen by the wayside. Let’s all make today better than yesterday.
During Winterfest, we dropped by a Cocoa Beach business which had previously advertised with us only to find out by the time you are reading this letter they will be out of business. Without all of us supporting small local businesses, they just can’t compete with the online retail giants. These advertisers are your neighbors, friends or even relatives, so let’s get out there and support them— shop and dine locally. Please take a moment and look through our advertisers and continue to patronize their businesses. It is their support which makes this local magazine possible. Our challenge to you, and to ourselves, for 2020 is to find an advertiser in the magazine which you might not have visited in a while or maybe never visited or used their services and make a point to reach out to them. Go to a local restaurant for dinner, shop at a local retail establishment instead of online, or book a household service. We all get in a rut and continue going to the same locations or doing the same things because it is comfortable and easy, but for 2020 let’s get out of the rut and try something different! We are always looking for local content for our magazine. Do you have a story idea? Do you know someone (or yourself) with an amazing experience that needs to be shared? Maybe your organization has an upcoming event or fundraiser that your neighbors might be interested in hearing more about. Reach out to us; we’d love to hear from you. Email us at info@explorermultimedia.com or call 321-759-6064. Have a wonderful start to this new year. Get out there and make 2020 your best year yet!

MAYOR’S MESSAGE
CAPE CANAVERAL UPDATE FROM MAYOR HOOG
CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Mayor Robert E. Hoog
A new year, a new decade and new Council Member – welcome Mickie Kellum! This year promises to be one for the record books as we work with an Interim City Manager, Todd Morley, who has been with the City for over 18 years; serving in such roles as Building Inspector, Building Official and most recently, Economic Development Director. Todd brings with him lots of experience and a new innovative management style that will serve the City well! There are several projects underway that will continue on into the upcoming year. The MultiGenerational Facility and C.A.P.E. Center (Cultural, Arts, Preservation + Enrichment) are two important Community improvements that we will see progress towards in 2020. Both of these facilities have been a long-time coming and will improve the quality of life for both residents and guests of Cape Canaveral. Staff has worked hard and made amazing strides in the last six months in an effort to increase public accessibility to City information online! A new website, online permitting, web registration for recreation programs and new internal systems as well. In the coming months, additional features will roll out; such as online payments and a Community reporting application that will allow residents and visitors to report concerns from their smartphones, directly to the appropriate departments within the City! Stay tuned! 1

Antioxidants Fight Against Cancer CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Susie Bond, RDN, LDN Health First Pro-Health & Fitness Center
Antioxidants are often called “the bodyguards of health.” They earned this distinction because they protect our cells from destruction by free radicals. Free radicals are highly-charged, oxidized particles that enter our cells, causing damage. This results in a greater risk of developing cancer, cataracts, a suppressed immune system, premature aging, heart disease and stroke. Oxidation is what happens to metal when it rusts. The metal reacts with the oxygen in the air which causes the metal to decompose and deteriorate. When you slice an apple it turns brown. It reacts with the oxygen in the air causing it to oxidize and decompose. The same type of thing happens in our cells when they become oxidized due to free radicals. Our bodies have a builtin defense system against free radicals, but like anything else, there’s a limit to how much they can handle. Excess exposure to free radicals overloads our bodies’ natural defense system, and leads to damage and disease. So, where do free radicals come from? Typically they come from chronic inflammation, ozone, industrial chemicals, excessive ultraviolet light, radiation, cigarette smoke, and air pollution. Antioxidants neutralize or inactivate free radicals, rendering them harmless. We get antioxidants in our diet primarily from fruits and vegetables. 8 | C ANAVER AL E X PLORER .C OM
There are thousands of different antioxidants that have been identified by scientists. Interestingly, it’s the specific antioxidants in fruits and vegetables that gives them their characteristic colors. For example, the antioxidant betacarotene gives carrots, cantaloupe, and pumpkin their orange color. Lycopene provides the red that we see in cherries, watermelon, and tomatoes. Anthocyanins are bluepurple, and are found in eggplant, blueberries, and plums. All antioxidants are generally cancer-protective. However, each one has a specific function and tends to target different parts of the body. Therefore, to get broad protection, you’ll want to consume a variety of colors of fruits and vegetables on a regular basis. Hence, “eat the rainbow” every day! The bottom-line best advice is to get your antioxidants from their original source – that is, real food, rather than supplements. The antioxidants in food work synergistically with other compounds in food to provide the best protection. So, that apple you sliced? If you want to prevent it from oxidizing or turning brown, you can dip the slices in lemon juice. That works to protect the apple because of something in lemon juice that functions as an antioxidant. That “something” is vitamin C!
COCOA BEACH JR/SR RECEIVES GENEROUS DONATION TO BOLSTER HEALTH AND WELLNESS PROGRAMS CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Mark J. Rendell, Principal of Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School
We want to highlight the generous contributions of one of our local business partners. We received a grant for $5,000 from State Farm Insurance. The funds will be used to purchase treadmills, dumbbell sets, workout mats, heart rate monitors and fitness workbooks. This is all part of a renewed focus on health and wellness at our school. With the additional equipment, we will be able to help students attain and maintain a well-balanced health and fitness routine. We were made aware of the competitive grant program by local State Farm Agent Sara Houston. We are extremely grateful to State Farm for this generous contribution, and we want to thank agent Sara Houston for making this possible. State Farm Agent Sara Houston presents a check for $5,000 to Cocoa Beach High School.

City to Host 1ST ANNUAL SPACE COAST PADDLE BATTLE (pickleball tournament)
CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Aaron Leyte, Leisure Services Manager
Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in America! This fun sport combines the skills of tennis, badminton and ping pong into a fast-paced court game which is played on a smaller tennis court with a modified net. Scoring in this game can only be done by the serving team. Both players get the opportunity to serve and score points for their team before the service changes teams. Pickleball games are played to 11 points traditionally and a team must win by two points. Tournaments may be played to 15 or 21 points to extend the length of the game, but teams must still win by two points to win the game. This sport is a great way to get active and have fun with people in your Community! The City of Cape Canaveral will be hosting the 1st Annual Space Coast Paddle Battle, a pickleball tournament for beginner and intermediate skill level players. The tournament is limited to the first 16 mixed double teams to register. Registration is $25 per team which includes entry to the tournament, a commemorative t-shirt and lunch for each player. This single elimination tournament is open to all players 18 years of age or older.
To register for this tournament, please call the City of Cape Canaveral’s Leisure Services Department at 321-868-1226 or visit the Nancy Hanson Recreation Complex located at 7300 N. Atlantic Avenue in Cape Canaveral.

THE SUN CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Zachary Eichholz, Sustainability Analyst
In 2019, the City of Cape Canaveral went all in on solar energy! Throughout the year the City embarked on several solar initiatives that will help to save money in terms of reduced utility costs, increased resiliency against power outages and lowing the Community’s overall environmental footprint. These efforts, as well as many others related to resilience, have been a binding focus of the City Council and are clearly displayed within the City’s Vision Statement. Transitioning City operations to run on clean and renewable forms of energy is also one of the recommendations set forth by the City’s recent Vulnerability Assessment Report. SolarTogether: In January, the City partnered with FPL to become one of the first municipal SolarTogether members. SolarTogether is an offset program where the City agrees to pay a slightly higher utility rate in order to invest in large-scale solar arrays being deployed by FLP. In exchange for this increased rate, the City will receive bill credits that will - after six years - see a breakeven point and subsequently begin positive financial returns. Over the life of the 30-year program the City will see over $385,000 in utility savings while helping to invest in a clean, renewable form of power. Solar Bus Shelter Lighting: In February, the City installed low-cost, grid independent LED solar lights onto each of its eight covered bus shelters to increase visibility and security for those using the shelters at night. Water Reclamation Facility (WRF) Solar Lighting Conversion: City Staff completed the conversion of all exterior grounds lighting at the City’s WRF in August to grid
independent solar variants to increase this critical facility’s resilience to outages and lower the plant’s energy cost. It is estimated at least 5265 kilowatt hours of electricity have been removed from the plant’s monthly energy demands. Multi-Generational Facility (MGF) + C.A.P.E. (Cultural, Arts, Preservation + Enrichment) Center Arrays: In November, the City Council unanimously voted to incorporate rooftop solar arrays into the designs of the upcoming MGF construction and C.A.P.E. Center development projects. Over the course of their 25-year life spans, the arrays will yield an estimated $242,525 and $108,773 in energy savings respectively and save an estimated 2,961,127 pounds of carbon dioxide from going into the atmosphere or the equivalent of planting 34,938 trees. Mobile Solar Generator: In December, the City took delivery of its first mobile solar generator in order to test the technology in preparation to transitioning its current fleet of mobile diesel generators to cleaner alternative fueled variants. This generator, manufactured by Californiabased company Mobile Solar, has a 1.0 kilowatt solar array with a 15 kilowatt hour onboard battery, giving it a maximum twoday lifespan at full charge depending on operating conditions. Zero traditional fuel is required for operations. According to the Solar Energy Industries Association, Florida ranks 5th among all fifty states for installed solar capacity, representing 3,337 megawatts of electricity (enough to power over 400,000 homes) supporting a growing workforce of over 10,000.

TIME FOR SOME NEW YEAR’S FINANCIAL RESOLUTIONS Have you thought about your New Year’s resolutions for 2020? When
many of us make these promises, we focus on ways we can improve some form of our health. We vow to get more physically healthy by going to the gym, or we promise to improve our mental health by learning a new language or instrument. But it’s also important to think about our financial health – so it’s a good idea to develop some appropriate resolutions for this area, too. What kinds of financial resolutions might you make? Here are a few suggestions: Increase your retirement plan contributions. One of the best financial moves you can make is to take full advantage of your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan. If you contribute pre-tax dollars to your plan, the more you put in, the lower your taxable income will be for the year, and your earnings can grow on a tax-deferred basis. So, if your salary goes up in 2020, increase the amount you put into to your plan. Most people don’t come close to reaching the annual contribution limit, which, in 2019, was $19,000, or $25,000 for those 50 or older. You might not reach these levels, either, but it’s certainly worthwhile to invest as much as you can possibly afford. Use “found” money wisely. During the course of the next year, you may well receive some money outside your normal paychecks, such as a bonus or a tax refund. It can be tempting to spend this money, but you may help yourself in the long run by investing it. You could use it to help fund your IRA for the year or to fill a gap in another investment account. Don’t overreact to market downturns. You’ve probably heard stories about people who lamented not getting in “on the ground floor” of what is now a mega-company. But a far more common investment mistake is overreacting to temporary market downturns by selling investments at the wrong time (when their prices are down) and staying out of the market until things calm down (and possibly missing the next rally). The financial markets always fluctuate, but if you can resolve to stay invested and follow a consistent, long-term strategy, you can avoid making some costly errors.

Be financially prepared for the unexpected. Even if you’re diligent about saving and investing for your long-term goals, you can encounter obstacles along the way. And one of these roadblocks could come in the form of large, unexpected expenses, such as the sudden need for a new car or some costly medical bills. If you aren’t prepared for these costs, you might have to dip in to your long-term investments to pay for them. To prevent this from happening, you may want to keep sufficient cash, or cash equivalents, in your investment accounts. Or you might want to maintain a completely separate account as an emergency fund, with the money kept in low-risk, liquid vehicles. If possible, try to maintain at least six months’ worth of living expenses in this account. It will take some effort but following these resolutions could help you move closer to your financial goals in 2020 – and beyond. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.
