EDITOR’S LETTER The champagne corks have popped, and we have watched the ball drop in Times Square again! Welcome to 2019! Happy New Year! The beginning of a year always has so much promise. We all scramble to figure out our new year’s resolutions. What are yours this year? Maybe you can join the Mayor’s Fitness Challenge along with a bunch of your neighbors and do that dreaded deed…. lose weight and get in shape! Whatever your resolutions, I wish you much success on hitting your goal. In the January issue of the Cocoa Beach Explorer, we are kicking off the first article of a series we are going to do called Refresh, Renew, Restore. It will spotlight different places around town that are adding to the wonderful character of Cocoa Beach. We are starting the series with a look into what the City of Cocoa Beach parking garage will look like and some information on its progress and features. Also featured in this month’s issue is a story about some of the great students at Freedom 7 Elementary that sold a tremendous number of socks for a great cause! They raised a remarkable amount of money and awareness for We Help Two which helps infants and children born with clubfoot. Definitely worth reading.

MALIK’S
FROM THE MAYOR
MESSAGE C O C OA B E ACH U P DAT E
written by Mayor Ben Malik
City of Cocoa Beach, January in Cocoa Beach as we enter the full throes of winter, our small town swelling in size from our snowbird friends up north and cooler temps abound. The brutal arctic air descends upon us as we break out the sweaters to deal with the 50-degree nights (yet, very thankful to not deal with blizzards, icy roads, etc.). I mean the struggle is real! Having to wear socks with our flip flops is pretty miserable, but it is really all relative! And, how about that Christmas miracle Miami Dolphins’ win over the Patriots with 0 time left!
Mayors’ Fitness Challenge which runs from February 2 through March 30, 2019. The winning team will be determined by the total number of minutes exercised by the members of each team. The municipality with the most points will win the challenger trophy, “Most Fit City 2019.” And, guess what, Surfing/Skating counts! Keep those New Year’s resolutions by staying active! Thank you for your support and allowing me to serve as your Mayor. Please feel free to contact me with any suggestions at bmalik@cityofcocoabeach.com or my cell at 321-794-6668.
The new year is a great time for a fresh start: take some time off to enjoy your family, learn new things (such as not electrocuting myself putting up Christmas lights with a staple gun and then once more to untangle such before I unplugged the cord. I now have nice plastic clips to hold the lights in place!), visit other cities in our state (go surf in aqua blue water in Delray Beach during a cold front— just be ready for crowds), catch the holiday lights in downtown St. Augustine (through February 3, 2019!), get involved in a civic organization in our community (Kiwanis, Rotary, Elks, Surfrider, Keep Brevard Beautiful, Women’s Club, etc.), take notice of the amazing things we have right here in our community (catch a play at Surfside Playhouse, enjoy a fine meal at one of our local eateries, go explore the Thousand Islands, visit the Dinosaur Store which has an amazing museum-quality collection of artifacts, try a new water sport, check out our amazing public library, golf, tennis courts and skate park!). We have lots of exciting things going on in our city: new parking garage underway, plans getting finalized for a new police station, and over $5 million in new wastewater plant upgrades (there are 40-year plus filters that have been rebuilt twice and fully outlived their useful life). The wastewater plant upgrades will also improve our capacity to handle large rainfall events, ensure our sewers are not backing up into people’s homes, and address the malodorous sulfur smell on the northside lift station. All right folks, our fittest city title is on the line; let’s keep it in Cocoa Beach! The 2019 Health First Mayors’ Fitness Challenge begins in February, and all participants must register online before January 15, 2019. T-shirts are available while supplies last. CONGRATULATIONS COACH LOWE!
written by: Karyle Green, Ed.D., Principal, Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. HS
Cocoa Beach High School recognized Coach and Teacher Dave Lowe on his incredibly successful years as an educator, coach and mentor to students in Brevard county over the past few decades. Football has always been a part of his life. Coach Lowe, following his graduation from Merritt Island High School in the 70s, went on to play football at both East Carolina and Troy State. After his graduation, he began his coaching career at Melbourne High School. From there, he spent time at Palm Bay, Cocoa Beach and back to his alma mater, Merritt Island High School. His second stint at Cocoa Beach came in the 90s when he served as an assistant and a head coach (interrupted by one year at MCC). The 2000s, Coach Lowe coached at Holy Trinity and returned to Cocoa Beach for his 3rd and final stint in 2008. If you add all those years up as a coach, Coach Lowe has impacted well more than 1000 student athletes on the field. One of those athletes impacted by Coach Lowe is Jackson Lalani. Jackson says football means so much to him. He said, “I respect Coach Lowe a lot! He spends hours and hours of his own time to make our team better. I will miss him a lot!” During the retirement activities for Coach Lowe, Cocoa Beach also recognized Senior Ryan Tsarnas who is leaving with Coach. Ryan has played football since 8th grade. He says that Coach Lowe “always found a way to make things funny. That’s how kids learned. Kids would get in trouble and the lessons came with laughter.” Ryan also had advice for younger kids. He says, “Get in8
volved. It’s definitely worth it to try new things. You make lots of memories that you’ll carry with you.” Ryan’s plans are to head off to UF and remain active in athletics through club sports.
Coach Lowe will be missed tremendously in the classroom. As a math teacher with 40 years’ experience, the impact he had on getting those kids across the bridge is indescribable. He has a way of connecting math to real world, and getting the kids to do the work! Coach Lowe is one of the reasons Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School has been an “A” all these years. When he’s retired from here, if you’re looking for a math tutor, you’ll have to look him up! That is, IF you’ll be able to find him at home. We know Coach Lowe is looking for ways to stay involved. He and his wife have been a huge part of Cocoa Beach all these years and we definitely will find ways to keep him supporting our students and our athletes. Congratulations, Coach Dave Lowe!

New Year’s Resolutions
Contributing writer: Deborah Frey, Ed.D.
Historically, people begin the New Year with unrealistic resolutions such as losing 50 pounds, giving up sweets, or going to the gym. This year, set a goal to help your child or grandchild develop or improve his/her cooperative skills. All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten written by Robert Fulghum in 2003, lists life lessons that reflect cooperation with others. How many of today’s children share toys, play fair, say they are sorry, clean up their own mess, return things where they found them, and are good winners and losers? Cooperation is not just a skill that children need, it is a life skill, necessary for people to live and succeed in society. Erin Schreiner wrote about the importance of cooperation in the workplace and its ability to cause a business to succeed or fail. When a group of employees works as a cooperative team they are more successful, more productive, have increased job satisfaction, and reduce misunderstandings among themselves. One of the first steps to developing cooperation is learning to take turns. This is a skill that must be taught to our children, it is not a natural inclination. Below is a list of cooperative games to play with your child to help him/her develop valuable, cooperative skills. Bean Bag Toss Bingo Candy Land Cards: Old Maid, Go Fish, War, Uno Cats in the Cradle Catch with balls and frisbees Checkers Chess Chinese Checkers Chutes and Ladders
Freeze Dance Guess Who Hi Ho Cherri O Hide and Seek Horse (with a basketball) Jenga Jump Rope (with two twirlers and a jumper) Kick the Can Lawn Darts Match Games
Mother May I Red Light, Green Light Relay Races Simon Says Sorry The Farmer in the Dell Treasure Hunts Trouble
A more complete list can be found at https://childcarelounge.com/pages/children-games-you-know Enjoy this special time connecting with your child while developing life skills! REFRESH, RENEW, RESTORE New Downtown Parking Garage
What makes a community stand out among the crowd of other towns vying for the attention of new businesses, new residents and visitors? What are the qualities certain communities hold which make people want to live and work in them? Character. It all boils down to small-town, big-hearted character. Think about the most memorable places you’ve been and what made them stick out in your mind. It was the character, and character is something that Cocoa Beach has in abundance.
16
Recently citizens, local government, Cocoa Beach Main Street and other entities have been hard at work refreshing and reinventing the Cocoa Beach we all love in the hopes of attracting both visitors and locals alike. Over the next few months, the Cocoa Beach Explorer will be doing a series of articles spotlighting some of these refreshing new endeavors. As all of you are probably aware, construction on the long-awaited downtown parking garage began back in September. The three-level structure will house 241 parking
spaces as well as public restroom facilities and outdoor showers — all greatly needed. With an estimated 2.4 million day-trippers visiting our vibrant community every year, parking has been a longstanding issue in downtown especially during the busy spring break and summer months. The positive effects of the parking garage should be felt by locals and visitors alike. Locals out for

lunch, dinner or an afternoon of shopping will know a parking space will no longer be an issue. And, visitors will no longer need to ride around block after block looking for a beach-day parking space. According to Melissa Byron, Director of Economic Development and CRA for City of Cocoa Beach, “The parking garage is moving forward with all the pilings completed. Footers have been poured; plus, by January, a few of the precast pieces should be in place! We are still looking for an early summer completion date.” c o c oab eac he x plorer.c om

Third Grade Students Take Action Our third grade students chose to take collective action and lead the school-wide initiative! They decided to sell socks to help an organization called We Help Two which corrects infants and children born with clubfoot. The goal was to be able to sell at least 100 pairs of socks in order to help with the surgery and expenses for one child impacted by clubfoot. But, through their dedication and commitment to a common goal, they sold over 200 pairs of socks, and with that, two children with clubfoot will be able to have corrective surgery and ongoing care. They even painted shoes for these children. As an IB PYP school, when students take action such as this, they are exhibiting their commitment to the attributes of the learner profile. -Jenny Noe, Instructional Coach/PYP Coordinator
“I feel good because I got to help someone that really needed help. I love helping people because then you feel like you did a good deed and I love that feeling.” -Frannie S. “I was happy to do the sock sale because it’s great to help people repair their feet so they can walk.” -Nicole M.

Why did you write this book? I wrote this book to show how ordinary people can do extraordinary things when their faith is greater than their fear and intimidation. You mentioned to me that little things and small investments from others helped navigate your path in life. Can you tell us about one or two? I obtained a scholarship from Lake Eye Associates for $1500, and I used that money for my first mission trip to Egypt which I embarked on a few days after graduating high school. That trip changed the course of my life, taking me out of rural Central Florida and introducing me to the great big world. You often don’t know how small things can make a huge difference in others’ lives. Even
small investments can pay big dividends. What message do you have for young adults in high school and college that are trying to find their way? Just because your path is difficult doesn’t always mean you’re on the wrong path. If you’re willing to do what others will not and go where others refuse, you will discover the depth and breadth of your gifts and have a major impact in the world. Nothing impactful ever happens in our comfort zones. We understand you have garnered some national attention while on your current book tour. What television appearances have you made? I had the privilege of being on the Megyn Kelly show, ABC’s
ASSAD
Meet the Author of “Breaking Cover: My Secret Life in the CIA and What It Taught Me About What’s Worth Fighting For”
CIA operative and counter terrorism expert Michele Rigby Assad spent a decade working as an undercover intelligence officer in the Directorate of Operations. Michele worked in Iraq and other classified Middle Eastern locations. A central Floridian, she is currently a public speaker, security consultant and trainer. Beyond 007 The CIA looks for walking contradictions—people who can keep secrets, yet can pull classified information out of others; people who love their country, yet are able to leave it behind, and head into dangerous places to perform our nations most highly sensitive tasks; people who can live a double life... in spite of all the personal and professional stress that it entails.
20/20, Fox Business, C-SPAN in addition to events at the International Spy Museum, Smithsonian, and Google. I bet you have a fun story or two that has happened to you while on this book tour. Can you share one? My favorite memory was meeting a young lady, I think she was about seven years old, while doing a book signing at Costco in Altamonte Springs. She wants to be an intelligence officer when she grows up and to be able to serve as a role model for such an adorable young lady gives me great joy! We all need role models to look up to, people who look like us, so we can imagine ourselves in their shoes.
What thought or lasting message would you like your readers to walk away with? We are capable of doing so much more than we can imagine. Don’t limit yourself. Do the things that scare and challenge you and will you discover talents you didn’t know you had. Any thoughts of writing anymore books? Yes, I have a couple of ideas for follow-on books. I’m looking forward to writing again. Anything else you would like to share with our readers? Don’t worry about jumping into the deep end of the pool. You don’t have to go into the CIA or the Middle East to make a difference. Focus on the baby steps. Focus on the people and the activities in your orbit and grow from there.
