EDITOR’S LETTER

It’s July!! Time to pull out the red, white and blue clothes, throw some great food on the grill and get ready for some fireworks! Welcome to summer… which brings the hot weather and afternoon thunderstorms. Almost everyday is a great beach day (at least early day), and we get to work on our summer tans (of course, using Sea & Ski sun care products!!) It’s a great time of year. This month’s issue has all kinds of information in it. Should make for some good, light, summer reading. Dr. Hendrix sent us a great article about floaters in your vision - a common eye issue. We are spotlighting a great restaurant in Cape Canaveral called Preacher Bar and reveal some of their unique dishes and drinks. Like to gamble, but don’t like cigarette smoke? The new, non-smoking cruises on Victory Casino are for you! Next, we’ve listed the 4th of July celebrations with fireworks that are happening all over the Space Coast! Finally, we are helping you get ready for your summer vacation with a little help from some local businesses.

CONTACT INFO

Tracee and I are always trying to think of great additions for future issues of Cocoa Beach Explorer. We are kicking around the idea of doing a “Recipe of the Month” idea. The concept would be that our readers would share a recipe, and we would feature email: Dougbaker34@aol.com this recipe and let you Traceepbaker@gmail.com know who shared it with us. What do phone: you think of this idea? Let 321-759-6064 us know. Send me an email at dougbaker34@aol.com or leave us a note on our Facebook page. If you wish to participate, please send your recipe and a picture or two of the dish to me via email. Everyone have a safe and happy 4th of July.

MALIK’S

MESSAGE

FROM THE MAYOR

C O C OA B E ACH U P DAT E

written by Mayor Ben Malik

I have been fortunate to travel the world early in my life having lived in both Belgium and Bangladesh and traveling throughout Europe, Southeast Asia, Mexico, and Central America. The real life experiences that come from traveling have really shaped me in relating to all sorts of people, cultures and customs. It is invaluable knowledge not found in textbooks but from actually experiencing the beauty of an 11th century Cathedral of St. Michael & St. Gudula in Brussels, seeing the Taj Mahal in India, changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace in London, beaches of Sri Lanka, lush green valleys of Costa Rica/El Salvador, and the swimming pool blue colored ocean of Cabo San Lucas. I would encourage everyone to travel and immerse yourself in the local customs, foods and culture; it is such an enriching experience. Even if you are budget constrained like myself now (with two children in college), trips to other parts of Florida or nearby like Charleston/Savannah allow you to explore new sights and things. My wife and I are planning a trip to Asheville (Allegiant Airlines offers roundtrip flights right around $120..yes same airline on 60 Minutes but sometimes you just gotta take a chance!) and will be celebrating our 27th anniversary in the craft beer capital of the world with the Blue Ridge Mountains in the backdrop (Chief Rosenfeld and our neighbors the Colburns, our 18-year-old son Chris will be left home alone for a few days, he did well last time!)! We begin our budget cycle and will have a workshop on Monday, July 17th (6 pm at City Hall). We welcome all to participate as we will have some challenges to overcome. I am confident in our ability to work together to overcome these challenges. I attended the Space Coast League of Cities Dinner in June and Dr. Blackburn (Brevard County Superintendent) talked about how the entire county/cities and school board worked together to solve the school safety issue while many other counties in Florida were busy pointing fingers. Brevard County came up with a solution. For us locally, Cocoa Beach will be placing a police officer at Roosevelt Elementary School and is looking to work with Freedom 7 Elementary to offer some space for Cocoa Beach Police officers to have an office to use for reports and having a security officer presence with support from CBPD (it is not only a fiscal challenge for more officers, there is a systemic shortage of police officers). We are very fortunate to live in a wonderful community that people actually spend money to come vacation in; never take it for granted, always take time to go sit by the ocean! Thank you for your support and allowing me to serve as your Mayor, please feel to contact me with any suggestions at bmalik@cityofcocoabeach.com or my cell at 321-794-6668.

Preacher Bar, which opened its doors in November 2014, is the brainchild of partners Richard Virgovic and Tomas Trska who also happen to own the restaurant next door – Kelsey’s Pizzeria. The decor is an eclectic mix of sparkling jewel toned stained glass lanterns and Mexican inspired artwork with a splash of Gothic and pseudo good time religion. Preacher Bar’s atmosphere is casual and family friendly, yet upscale with handmade cocktails and a mouthwatering menu unlike any establishment on the Space Coast. The funky mix of background music ranges from classics like the Eurythmics to current pop and electronic dance.

COCKTAILS AND BEER

THE MENU The menu consists of starters like the Scotch egg – a hardboiled egg wrapped in sausage and rolled in breadcrumbs then baked to a golden brown, and always a crowd favorite, crispy calamari served with petal blossom sauce. Follow up with an entrée like the bacon mac n’ cheese – pasta tossed in a blend of smoked Gouda, Vermont cheddar and fontina cheese topped with applewood smoked bacon. Looking for something on the lighter side? Try one of Preacher Bar’s favorites, blackened mahi mahi tacos served with fresh ginger slaw, avocado cilantro cream sauce and mango relish. Top off your meal with one of Preacher Bar’s sinfully sweet desserts. They offer favorites like tiramisu, fresh key lime pie and a decadent chocolate cake.

Preacher Bar carries over 40 craft, import and domestic beers both on tap and in bottles. The selection of beer changes monthly, which means there’s almost always a new beer to tempt your taste buds. Like wine? Their extensive wine selection includes reds, whites, sparkling wines and blends from California to Italy, Argentina and New Zealand. No matter your preference, there is sure to be a wine selection you’ll fall in love with. If you prefer a cocktail over beer or wine, they have a full liquor bar and many of their handmade cocktails are sure to please. One of the newest additions to the lineup is the Preacher Mule – made with ginger-infused vodka, fresh lime juice, agave nectar and ginger ale and the Moscow Mule – made with Stoli vodka, fresh lime juice and ginger beer. The mule drinks are served in the traditional copper mug which keeps your drink cold long after it is served. Check out the Drink of the Month feature on page 16. Preacher Bar kindly supplied this month’s recipe: Raspberry Mojito!

NEW FACES AT COCOA BEACH JR./SR. HIGH SCHOOL written by: Karyle Green, Ed.D., Principal, Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. HS

It’s amazing how quickly things change during the summer. As of today, Brevard Public Schools is welcoming its next superintendent, Dr. Mark Mullins! We, beachside, are very excited about Dr. Mullins carrying forth all the wonderful progress the district has made on behalf of all its students. Dr. Mullins has worked throughout this district from north to south. He started his teaching career right here at CBJSHS. He spent the last several years overseeing district programs. Most recently, he has been the Deputy Supt./COO for Brevard Public Schools! He hopes to maintain and carry forth the wonderful relationships that have been built throughout the community as he takes the reigns of the district. At Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School, we have many new faces that you’ll see in the fall. Not all spots have been filled, but I’m

happy to update you where we are so far. The new assistant principal for curriculum is Mr. Kevin Rhyne. Mr. Rhyne has spent the last few years as a dean at Satellite High School. The committee joked about “that Satellite guy,” but really, he’s a Rockledge guy more than a Satellite guy. He spent more than a dozen years teaching social sciences at Rockledge. During that time, he headed the Academy programs and built the Maritime program into one of only 50 across the nation. Mr. Rhyne is excited to start his new ventures at Cocoa Beach Jr./ Sr. High School and to be on “this side” of the Scorpion/Minutemen battle! Our new Athletic Director is Ray Kimball. Coach Kimball comes to us, most recently, from Viera High School as the girls’ basketball coach and PE teacher. Before that, he spent 30 years in Michigan teaching, coach-

ing girls, coaching boys and loving athletics. He is looking forward to getting out into the community and meeting all of our top notch supporters and wrangling in some more. He is excited to meet so many of you and to create a visible presence within our community. One of our counselors, Mrs. Robertson, has moved to a school closer to her home. We have hired Ms. Emery Carr to fill her shoes. Ms. Carr is a UCF graduate and has a background in psychology as well as counseling and guidance. I just know that our students and parents will love her! She makes a great addition to the team who will be working with Ms. Southall, Mrs. Shepard, Dr. Primus and Dr. Baldridge. It is my hope that next month, we’ll be able to share more of our new hires as they sign on to the best staff in the county!

VICTORY CASINO

NOW OFFERING NON-SMOKING CRUISES ON SELECT DATES

Victory Casino Cruises sails out of Port Canaveral at Terminal B 2. They quickly became one of the top attractions in our area. This July, Victory will be celebrating their 7th Anniversary and look to welcome their 2 millionth passenger later this summer. Most people know Victory for their casino where they offer over 600 of the latest slot machines in every denomination from penny machines to $25.00. You can play all of your favorite table games that you would in Las Vegas including, Blackjack, Craps, Roulette, 3 Card Poker, Let It Ride, Ultimate Texas Hold ‘Em and more. They also offer Bingo and a full Sports Book. Besides the gambling, they feature live entertainment on every cruise and frequently bring in national acts to perform for their guests. They have recently featured several contestants from The Voice television show and brought in Grammy Award winning songwriters from Nashville. Joey Fatone from NSYNC recently hosted a party on the ship only two days before receiving his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Victory sails twice a day everyday, so there is always something different going on. Victory has top-of-the-line smoke eaters throughout the ship and two of their floors are non-smoking everyday. In April, Victory offered their first completely non-smoking cruise. The first cruise was a hit, and since then they have scheduled two days each month which have been dedicated to non-smokers. This month those cruises will be on Wednesday, July 11th and 25th on both the morning and night cruise.

Getting You Kids are out of school, the temperatures are going up, and we are all getting a little stir crazy. It’s vacation time! It’s the perfect time to get away. We have a few local businesses that can help you out on your summertime journey. This information will help you take care of your feline family members while you are gone, show you where to learn the perfect way to pack, and get you started on your journey to the airport or cruise terminal. Travel safe, and have a great trip!

We all love to get away for a little while. Time to relax, ignore the emails and phone calls, and just let our hair down for a bit. BUT, we must figure something out for our feline family that isn’t going with us. We have your solution! Dondi Allen owns Kitty Kritter Sitter and she specializes in taking care of your furry friends. Kitty Kritter Sitter provides personalized, in-home pet care allowing your feline friends to stay home in familiar surroundings. She will try to follow your pet care routine as closely as possible. This includes feeding, watering and giving any medication your pet may require. Of course, she also spends “quality time” with your pet - just playing, petting and loving, so your pet receives personal attention while you’re away. As a bonus, she is happy to keep an eye on your home at the same time by doing such things as bringing in your mail and newspaper, alternating lights, opening and closing curtains and blinds and watering plants — activities that give your home a lived-in look. Give her a call at 321-9171530 or visit kittykrittersitter.com to check off kitty sitter from your “to do before the trip” list.

We can also help you with the dreaded task of packing for the vacation. Do you always pack and waste a lot of space or end up with everything a wrinkled mess? Please say yes, so I’m not the only one! Ship To Shore Luggage Store on the 520 Causeway across from the Dinosaur Store has you covered. They are offering FREE packing demonstrations. Just call them at 321-749-3896 to book your spot in the class or sign up on their website: shiptoshoreluggage.com. Do you have a group or organization that would be interested in a private packing demo? They can help you with that too; just give them a call to coordinate the details. Of course, if you need anything like luggage, travel backpacks, garment bags, a luggage scale or tags…they have you covered. Stop in and tell Sharlee hello.

Now that your kitties are taken care of and you are all packed and ready to go, we need to get you to the cruise ship or airport. Here is where Happy Hour Shuttle comes into play. Why pay for parking at the airport or cruise terminal? Call Happy Hour Shuttle at 888-601-6640 or visit their website at HappyHourShuttle.com. They can get you to Melbourne, Sanford, or Orlando Airport in time for your flight no matter when it leaves. Plus, if you are leaving on a cruise, they can drop you off right at the terminal. No parking, no shuttles, no dragging luggage…seems like a no-brainer.

WE DELIVER!

Let’s not forget the dreaded return trip. You know you will be tired from your world tour, and won’t it be great to crawl in a van and let someone else drive you home? Happy Hour Shuttles can also take you and your friends out on the town and be your designated driver, so everyone can have a good time. Perfect for bachelor/bachelorette parties, birthday parties, weddings, beach crawls, or any other time you don’t want to drive. Open 11am 7 Days a Week
