EDITOR’S LETTER
Can you believe it is already June! It really doesn’t seem possible that we are half way through 2018. June also signifies the start of another hurricane season, Ugh! Hope the fact that we already have had a named storm BEFORE the official season started isn’t significant to the kind of hurricane season we are going to have. Fingers crossed that it was just a fluke, and this year will be a quiet and safe season. This month’s issue has some great articles in it. We caught up with Kole Trent and walked through his art studio. He is our spotlight person of the month. Next, we talked with Mark Granger with Cocoa Beach Helicopters in Port Canaveral for information on getting a “birds-eye” view of our great town. Plus, we would like to thank Megan Malik (Ben Malik’s daughter) and Mary Ann Thompson for a couple great stories. Mary Ann is giving you a little insight on Cocoa Beach real estate and Megan will pull at your heart strings with an essay she wrote about her Nana.

Remember, if you are a non-profit organization having an event or fundraiser, send us the information; we will try and include it in our Community Corner. A good rule of thumb is to have it to us by the 10th of the previous month to be included.

MALIK’S
MESSAGE
FROM THE MAYOR
C O C OA B E ACH U P DAT E
written by Mayor Ben Malik
Summer is here and soon the start of another hurricane season. I pray that our community is spared from any storms this year (I have had my fill!). Residents should have a hurricane plan and some important tips/tools (such as filling up your bathtub with water, which I now realize after losing water supply last year is vital!) are available at: • https://www.weather.gov/safety/hurricane • http://flash.org/hurricanestrong/ The most important thing to do obviously is to evacuate to a safer location if possible. A small window AC unit and generator can really make a difference in keeping comfortable and running your fridge as well. If you own a restaurant, please consider investing in a generator to ensure your food inventory is not lost. As we all painfully know, power restoration can take a while! We are going to decide on adoption of our city charter and ballot language for residents to consider including our building heights. As we have discussions, I hope we can have a healthy debate based upon facts and not hyperbole. I personally have no interest in high-rise buildings and will not support any (a high rise is defined by International Building Code or IBC as: “A building with an occupied floor located more than 75 feet above the lowest level of fire department vehicle access.” ). It is my desire that we do not fracture the community with this discussion and forget that we are all neighbors and should be able to have differences of opinion
without launching into personal attacks. We live in a coastal community prone to storm surge. Multiple year revisions to building codes and new FEMA wash-through requirements have taken place since residents voted on this issue in 2002. It is time for all residents in 2018 to consider some of the adverse impacts of these regulatory changes as well as economic challenges we face as a community. Social media has changed the way we interact and has both positive and negative effects on today’s society. While it allows for broader interaction with residents in our community and getting real time updates for residents during emergency situations such as hurricanes, severe weather, etc., it also creates a platform for people to post inaccurate information (such as the millions the City spent on the Minutemen Project which was a stormwater project primarily funded by State and local grants — it was a huge win for Cocoa Beach residents and reducing runoff to the lagoon (see https:// content.govdelivery.com/accounts/FLDEP/bulletins/1ac80ed), etc.), launching into personal attacks because someone expressed a different viewpoint on an issue. I wonder if people would really talk to each other in person the way some of these go at it on social media. Thank you for your support and allowing me to serve as your Mayor. Please feel to contact me with any suggestions at bmalik@ cityofcocoabeach.com or my cell at 321-794-6668.

A tribute for all those who lost their mothers and still grieve... written by Megan Malik / submitted by Ben Malik My daughter is attending UCF and wrote a beautiful essay for her English composition class, an ode to Nana Claire Scovel and her daughter/ my wife, Kelly Malik. ~ Ben Malik
The day I found out my Nana passed away, my mother took me to the circus. I suppose she thought elaborate costumes, dimly lit seats, elephants, clowns, and fire hoops would make the news a little less horrible. Nana and I had a special bond since the day she met me in the hospital. My mom was the youngest out of seven children, so I was an important addition to the crop of grandchildren she had. I was four years old when we lost my Nana, my most special friend in the world. Nana Claire Scovel was an incredibly beautiful person, inside and out. She had soft blond hair that was always styled, blue eyes, a gentle voice, and the sweetest smile. She always looked put together. Matching outfits that flattered her tan, fit figure, classic lightly applied makeup, and pearl earrings. The image of her smil-
8
ing face is with me to this day, I can feel her peacefulness on the tougher days that life throws me. Her beach condo was my favorite place to go to as a child. She lived all the way at the top of an 8 story condo, in Cocoa Beach, Florida. It was a castle in my eyes. She had the fluffiest light pink carpet that I loved to run my bare feet across. I still picture myself looking down from the white railings on her balcony at the waves crashing on the shore. I felt like I was on top of the world when I looked down there. I loved staying over at my Nana’s condo. She would always call me “my little meggy” while she grabbed my toes, and we would laugh, and laugh. I can still hear her voice. Her kind energy is something I have always strived
Megan and Nana for. She spoiled me with love, beach picnics, and Barbie dolls. We always read Beach Bunny together, while on the beach. It was my favorite book because it reminded me of my Nana. We’d chase the birds on the beach, while looking at the “peach waves”

as she would call them. The sunset created a beautiful pink sky that reflected over the ocean like an oil painting during the evenings. This was Nana’s favorite time of day, she always pointed out those “peach waves”. Every time I’m at the beach at sunset I feel an overwhelming sense of peacefulness, I know you’re still with me Nana. When Nana passed, I had experienced loss for the first time. This sadness was microscopic compared to the agony my mom had felt. I lost my Nana, my favorite beach buddy. While my mom lost her best friend, her biggest fan, her therapist, and her number one source of unconditional love. My mom wasn’t even 30 years old when she lost her mother unexpectedly. I would always hug her tightly on the bad days and remind her that I too, was her biggest fan. This horrible loss brought along an even stronger bond between my mother and me. I would always be there for her to cry to, and to cry with, that never went away. Loss is a funny thing to explain to a 4-year-old, but my mom did her best. I saw tears fill my mother’s hazel green eyes, as she attempted to explain that Nana is in heaven now. I remember crying and saying, “but mom, I
don’t want her to leave”. I didn’t understand why my Nana would leave us. I didn’t really know people did leave us in this world. My mom grabbed me tightly and we both cried in each other’s arms. To this day my mother is in awe of how emotional my response to the news was. At only four years old I knew I had lost somebody I wasn’t ready to lose. My mother was never quite the same after she lost her mother. I’d hear her crying and crying, as she dialed Nana’s old phone number in hopes of hearing her voice. She would sit in her in her closet and smell Nana’s old clothes, squeezing them tightly as she held them closely to her chest. We would visit Nana’s old condo just to smell her hallway and look at her old view. Nana left us too soon, everyone says that I know. But this time it was true. She was feeling some chest pain and went to the hospital. Later that day my mother received a call that Nana’s artery had ruptured upon insertion of a heart catheter and my mom was completely devastated. Nana has taught me to be kind in life, to always keep a smile, and that it’s okay to be soft spoken. My mom sees a lot of Nana in
me as I’ve grown older. Our mutual hatred for olive oil, our blue eyes, our demeanor. Losing her has made me stronger throughout the years, so I can be there for my mother. Being there for my mother, brought me to the realization that I love to help others. After countless breakdowns wondering what I’m supposed to do in life, Nana made me realize that I want to be a psychologist/ counselor. Losing her will always hurt, she was so special to me growing up. I always wish I could call her and fill her in on my life throughout the years. I wish she could have met my younger brother, saw me graduate high school, and gone to my wedding. My mom said that is the hardest part, she always wants to call her mom, by habit or instinct, but she can’t. Some days we still hug each other so tightly, it brings me back to the day we lost my Nana. That grip of reassurance that lets us know we still have each other, that it’s hard but it will be okay. Nana may be gone, but she has never truly left us. She will be apart of our lives forever, leaving signs here and there, guiding us throughout our lives, reminding us all that everything is going to be okay.

IS THE SCHOOL REALLY CLOSED OVER SUMMER? written by: Karyle Green, Ed.D., Principal, Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. HS
So many people wonder what happens throughout the summer at school. Summer time is when things really “ramp up!” Often times, people think that summer is dead. But there is so much work to do that there are times the whole day goes by and there hasn’t been time for lunch. At least when the students are here, there is a forced lunch period for all adults! Throughout the summer, more than half of the teachers attend some sort of professional development. This could be related to curriculum such as new textbook adoption, new standards or new state requirements. Other types of professional development might be about programs found in our schools such as our PBIS incentive program. Still other sorts of professional development opportunities are requirements for programs such as AP and IB. Students are found on campus during the summer time as well as teachers. We have summer school, clubs, community service activities and academic contests which have moved on to state and national levels. There is athletic conditioning and sports camps
12
and practices start long before students return for school. Also, there is a testing window where students come to retake tests when necessary. With these opportunities, it is our goal that all students start the year at the grade level they should be. All throughout the summer, our facilities are getting reconditioned, cleaned, spruced up and rejuvenated. Our custodial team works really hard all summer long to make Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School look brand new upon the arrival of staff and students in August. The gym floor is refinished, lighting across all the facilities is enhanced, repairs are made, etc. There is always some work occurring across campus. Definitely not last, but last in this list, is the hiring, master scheduling, student scheduling, records maintenance, planning and calendar work that is needed for school to open in August. Many things happen throughout the summer. We are definitely NOT closed!

OF THE PARADISE WE CALL HOME
an interview with Cocoa Beach Helicopters’ owner Mark Grainger photos courtesy of NPI Productions/Mark Walsh
We have all seen your helicopter flying around Cocoa Beach and Port Canaveral. What flight packages do you offer, and which are the most popular? Our incredibly convenient private helipad in Port Canaveral allows us to offer the best tours for the best prices. We currently have six different tour options, ranging from our quick 3-5 minute “Port Special” to our 45-minute “See-It-All” tour. All our tours take customers over the Port and past the cruise ships, SpaceX rocket landing ship, shrimp boats, and Canaveral Locks. The longer tours cruise the beach to the Cocoa Beach Pier and Thousand Islands, while our longest tours cruise over the St. Johns River and the Kennedy Space Center, including an incredibly unique low pass down the Space Shuttle runway.

We saw your helicopter flying over the boats in the Thunder on Cocoa Beach race. What roll do you play in the race? Every year we assist the race by flying an Official Wildlife Observer to make sure that no turtles, manatees, or dolphin are in harm’s way. As a matter of fact, the delay of the start of the race this year was because our observer spotted a sea turtle, and it had to be “escorted” out of the way. Do you get many locals flying with you? While we carry lots of tourists, the local community makes up a big part of our business. Just about every local resident I know is very proud of the beauty and charm of our barrier island home. It seems we all have out-of-town friends and family that often want to come visit and taking
them up in our helicopter to see the awesomeness of this area is the perfect thing to do. We also fly lots of locals for birthdays, anniversaries, and “it’s just a beautiful day to fly” customers. I’ve seen some flight packages at some of the charity events around town. Do you work with a lot of charities? We opened for business in 2010 with our World War II vintage open-cockpit biplanes from the Merritt Island Airport. Between the biplanes and the helicopter, we have donated hundreds of free and discounted tours to local charities, groups, churches, schools, and other worthwhile fundraisers. We believe it’s very important to be a good partner and supporter of our local communities. We are very fortunate to have a such

a unique and exciting activity on the Space Coast that we can offer to these groups for fundraising and the support of important charitable goals. I bet you have some good stories about passengers. What is one of the most unique stories you can share? Several years ago, we had a father and young daughter take a ride for her birthday. She had never flown before and seemed to be truly amazed and enthralled with her flight. He kept in touch over the years, telling us how much the experience transformed her and that she couldn’t stop “talking about and dreaming of the sky and flying”. He recently contacted us to tell us that she graduated high school and was accepted into the US Air Force Academy where she
intends to be a fighter pilot. That was one heck of a birthday present! How many passengers can you take at one time? Our modern, air-conditioned helicopter can carry three passengers and a pilot. Just like the airlines, infants under the age of 2 can sit on a lap and fly for free. We are open 365-days per year, weather permitting.
What else would you like to share with our readers? We are veteran owned and operated by a Cocoa Beach family, and only employ the most skilled and experienced pilots to fly our helicopter. We strive to provide the safest and most enjoyable experience you can have in the air. If you haven’t flown with us and had the opportunity to see the beauty of this area from above, then you need to. We tend to take for granted our daily perspective of our lives and where we live, but knowing how it looks from above, and experiencing the fun of flight is something everyone needs to do.

How is the real estate market? That is a question I seem to get quite a bit these days. Since I do not have a crystal ball that allows me to see into the future, I can only use trends and statistics to answer this question. My answer is typically always the same. Homes are still selling quite well, if they are priced properly. Inventory has remained low, fewer homes are on the market, which has kept home prices up.
REAL ESTATE TRENDS IN COCOA BEACH written by Mary Ann Thompson, Remax Solutions Agent I have clients that have been receiving area listings for years. They have decided this is where they want to retire but are not quite ready to buy. They have watched as the home values have steadily increased, and most regret not buying three or four years ago. There are a lot of people who want to move to Florida! Cocoa Beach, particularly, has become more and more appealing to new residents, investors and vacationers. Finding a short term furnished rental for a “snowbird” is almost impossible these days. Some of those visitors that have been coming to Cocoa Beach for years, have not only
16
$250
found it difficult to rent a place, but have been hit with much higher rental rates. The rental market is certainly tough for tenants here in Cocoa Beach. Most listing in Cocoa Beach are closing at approximately 96% of their original list price and will typically stay on the market for about 50 days. Keep in mind, that is the average. Waterfront properties, especially those needing little to no updates, don’t last long in this market. Even with the increase in home prices here, this area still seems like a bargain compared
to some in South Florida. Our proximity to the beaches, Port Canaveral and the attractions in Orlando, make our little town a great place to live in as well as visit. And compared to Orlando and South Florida, we have no traffic! Well, at least most days, traffic flows well. I’m not complaining, I still think this is a great place to live and work! If you want to know what your home’s current market value is, or if you are looking to purchase a new home or investment property, call me at 321-863-9757. I would be happy work with you!

Cocoa Beach Spotlight
these are the people in your
Kole Trent A gracious and immensely talented local artist Tree of Light
Just south of 4th Street North be-
tween the A1A split is a gem of an art studio you must check out. The studio, named Backsideart, is the home of Cocoa Beach artist Kole Trent. We had the pleasure of first meeting Kole at an art festival back in April where the vivid and captivating colors of his Tree of Light drew us into his booth for a quick chat, but only after visiting his studio did we realize the depth of his talents. Kole and his brother, Kyle, were kind enough to give us a fantastic tour of the Backsideart studio along with explanations of some of Kole’s fantastic art — an extensive collection of work ranging from tropical reefs and sunset savannahs to his newest series “Self Expression” — and little tidbits of Kole’s history and how it all started.

But I think it is best to let Kole tell you about himself and his art in his own words...
Just Smile
My Self Expression series was a way for me to step back to the origins of why I started to paint. A way for me to express what I’m truly feeling rather then fitting into society’s expectations.

Self Expression Series
Infinite Youth
They say writers see their work as art, and it is. I see my Art as life... MY life. The pieces I create are my truest interpretations of my personal seeing, thinking, feeling, breathing, real LIFE! My name is Kole Trent, and I want you to know me... I am a young artist born in 1996, who grew up primarily, and still resides in Florida. Growing up in Cocoa Beach, my first love quickly became surfing. At age 10, I picked up my first paint brush and set my heart and eyes upon a blank canvas. With the waves still under my board, and a paintbrush in hand, I have merged these two loves into the life I am currently living and sharing with you through every piece of art I create. The pieces I create come from so deep within me that I define them as the very essence of who I am. I have been blessed with many gifts in life, but the gift I cher-

ish most is the gift I’ve termed “true sight”. I see the true beauty of this world through vibrant colors, the magnificence of nature, through love and peace that can and does exist if we embrace it, through kindness and serenity, through lightness of heart and soul, through smiles passed amongst us. This kaleidoscope of life is what I put into every wave I ride, and every brushstroke that touches my canvas. This is not only my life’s passion and work... This is Me... Great to meet you!
You can visit Kole’s studio at: 366 N. Atlantic Ave. Cocoa Beach.
