EDITOR’S LETTER

Well, it is already June and hard to believe that 2020 is nearly half over. Looking back on the last three months, I suddenly feel like a gambler standing at the Craps table, bet placed and waiting on the come-out roll. Let’s hope the back half of 2020 has better odds than the first half! First, let me start by saying thank you to the readers who reached out to us during the shutdown. It was encouraging to hear from you and great to know you enjoy the magazines, miss them when they are gone, and look forward to getting them. It was very disappointing to be unable to publish the April and May issues of Canaveral Explorer, but it is great to be back in June. However, this issue might look a bit different than previous issues, but we have faith it will only be a short time until the magazine is back to normal. Due to current circumstances and requirements for social distancing, most events and gatherings have been canceled; therefore, the June issue is missing some of the sections which have previously been included. These sections will be returning as the world (and the magazine) continues its trek back to normal. This month we have included a section called Getting Back to Business which includes some local businesses that have unshuttered their doors and are ready to welcome you back. Many of the businesses in this section have special offers listed in their ads, so make sure to take advantage of the offers. It is a win-win for you and them. I pray that June is a healthy, happy and productive month for everyone.

MAYOR’S MESSAGE

CAPE CANAVERAL UPDATE FROM MAYOR HOOG

CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Mayor Robert E. Hoog

City of Cape Canaveral Residents: In March, our peaceful beach town was faced with a public health threat unlike anything ever experienced in its history. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the leaders of cities around the world have been faced with many of the most difficult administrative decisions that they will ever make — and we here in Cape Canaveral were no exception. We declared a State of Emergency in the City of Cape Canaveral on March 16, 2020 and as a longtime resident and leader of this community, I can assure that this decision was not made lightly. This measure and the many that followed allowed the City to address equipment, supplies, personnel, Emergency Operations Center, City property assignments and waiver of procedures; all in an effort to best serve you and protect the Community. We knew going into this that challenges and inconveniences would be inevitable. City Council and other Public Meetings needed to be hosted virtually, City events and recreation activities were canceled, City offices were closed to the public and many Staff members had to learn to work remotely.

6 | C ANAVER AL E X PLORER .C OM

But in every instance Cape Canaveral rose to the occasion, led by example and proved its resiliency as a Community. While COVID-19 remains an unprecedented experience for our community, and we are aware that it will not go away overnight, Staff is trained and the City is prepared for the challenges to come. We are here to band this Community together, to help provide information and resources as they become available and answer any questions you might have. Citizens are urged to remain calm and help each other out as neighbors and friends. Please follow us on all City social media accounts, join our email mailing list and stay tuned to our website for continually developing updates on this situation. Stay safe out there!

City’s First Virtual Student Art Show Sidesteps COVID-19 Challenges CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Molly Thomas, Cultural + Community Affairs Director

For the past two decades, the Cape Canaveral Student

global nature of the challenges faced by communities around the world amid the COVID-19 public health crisis.

Art Show has been a Spring time cultural staple for students throughout Brevard County. In the last few years, it has expanded exponentially and now features the artwork from as many as 16 area schools — to include a mix of public, private, magnet and charter institutions, as well as art created by students enrolled in home school programs. The original show was slated to open on April 3rd and by early March, with the increasing restrictions necessary to stop the spread of COVID-19, it became evident that a physical show would not be feasible. Just when cancellation seemed imminent, a solution appeared on the other side of the globe, in Auckland, New Zealand, with a company called Exhibbit, that specializes in creating virtual 3-D art gallery experiences. Sympathetic to our dilemma, the company was eager to collaborate and help the City of Cape Canaveral avoid one less disappointing cancellation for area students — many of which have lost the opportunity to engage in athletic programs, coming-of-age social activities and above all, their well-earned commencement ceremonies.

Based on the feedback from parents, teachers, students and judges, the move towards an annual virtual Student Art Show may be a lasting one, at least for the immediate future. We will look forward to once again being able to share our students’ talent with the world.

While many schools had to withdraw from the show due to the challenges imposed by the pandemic, the show went on with nearly 160 pieces of art. It was the first time, our student artists were able to share their art with friends and family around the world — any and every one that was previously unable to visit the show in person. Comprised of four individual galleries, visitors experienced the students’ artwork in a virtual 3-dimensional space — traversing the room as if in an actual gallery and with the ability to examine each piece in high-definition and vibrant color. The decision to go virtual also presented show organizers with a unique opportunity. With its world-wide accessibility, this year’s show has enlisted a handful of guest judges who are professional artists, working in an assortment of fields around the world. This served as encouragement for our students considering careers in the arts and reinforced the

LIVE MUSIC SECTION WILL BE RETURNING TO CANAVERAL EXPLORER Let’s face it— the world is quite a strange place right now. We each have our own opinions about to mask or not to mask, to open the beach or to not open the beach, to open the businesses or to not open the businesses, etc. But, no matter how you feel about the current situation, I think one thing we can all agree on is we would love our lives to go back to normal. I miss normal! Not a “new normal,” but that normal we didn’t even realize was normal until it wasn’t. During the current normal, our great local live music venues are focused on getting reopened while meeting the current safety guidelines which means that live music is extremely limited. Explorer magazines looks forward to a time when the venues are prosperous, the music is loud (or soft if that is your thing) and our Live Music section is once again filled to the brim. As local venues begin to reintroduce live music, we will once again add the Live Music section to the magazine. We have faith that we will be back in the music in no time! We would like to express a special thank you to our Live Music section sponsor KelTec. They have made the Live Music section possible since we began publishing the Canaveral Explorer back in 2018. We greatly appreciate them sticking with us through these unusual times.

Young Entrepreneur is a “Cut” Above WRITTEN BY: Doug Baker, Editor, Canaveral Explorer

What were you doing when you were 17 years old? Most of us were busy just being a typical teenager— going out and hanging with friends, playing video games or something along those lines. We did not even dream about owning our own business; well, maybe we dreamed about it, but those dreams were for the future not for the present. Corey Bollinger, however, is not your typical teenager. He did not just dream about the future. At the ripe young age of 17, he began living life as a business owner. Yes, you read it correctly, a 17-year-old business owner. Starting in 2017, Corey spent his time cutting grass and building a client base around the beachside communities—all of this while keeping up with his homeschool studies. Fast-forward to 2020, Corey, now 18 and a homeschool graduate, has been swiftly expanding his business, Lawns by Corey, providing monthly complete lawn maintenance to over eighty clients.

If you ask Corey what his favorite thing to do is (besides boating and skateboarding), he will answer “making money cutting grass.” Much of the money he has earned over the past few years he has turned around and reinvested into his company by purchasing state-of-the-art lawn equipment, a new truck, and an enclosed trailer for all his lawn equipment. He also makes sure to maintain a fully licensed and insured business. Currently, Corey is looking to grow his business to between 100 and 120 clients. He feels this is the sweet spot for the number of clients he can comfortably handle on his own and still provide those clients with top-notch service. He chooses to do all the work himself and does not farm it out or hire other people. This way he knows the work is done to his standards.

realize that quality equipment makes a huge difference. Plus, Dad taught me how to take good care of that equipment!” He finished by telling me, “I love working outdoors. It’s a bonus that I get to work for myself and make a comfortable income.” To say the least, it is impressive seeing such a young man with such fierce ambition. Corey is a young man striving to reach his goals and showing how hard work and perseverance make dreams a reality. The sky is the limit for this young entrepreneur! If you need a lawn service, give Corey a call at 321-697-9602.

I asked Corey how he got into the business, and he replied, “I’ve learned to love the business through my Dad’s lawn mower shop. Being raised around lawn mowers, I have come to C ANAVER AL E X PLO RER .C O M | 11

Our school year came to a close in a much different manner this year and the group it probably affected the most was our Seniors, the Class of 2020. The Pandemic forced the cancellation of many traditional events and activities that mark the end of the “Senior Year.” For example, they lost their Senior Prom and our traditional Graduation Ceremony. Fortunately, our community rallied around our Seniors. A group of parents who had been working together to provide an event called Project Graduation turned their attention to providing these young people with a series of celebrations to close out their Senior year. Led by Rebecca Pletcher, they worked with city officials and local organizations, like the Cocoa Beach Kiwanis Club and the Elks Lodge, to organize a “Senior Celebration” on May 22nd – which was the original date for our traditional graduation ceremony. It all began

with a walk on the beach, a light dinner on the city parking garage, followed by a car parade down Minutemen Causeway, and finished with a small event at the school football stadium. This Senior Celebration was incredibly fun and created memories that I am sure the Class of 2020 will never forget. All of the events required the contribution and collaboration of so many individuals and groups in our community. It was, of course, so appropriate for Seniors from Cocoa Beach High School to begin their celebration with a walk on the beach. I imagine that this will become a new tradition that all Senior classes will want as part of their celebration each year. We wish the Class of 2020 the best as they embark on the next chapter of their lives. We are so grateful to our community that we were able to send them off with such a memorable celebration.

Contending With Hurricane Season in the Midst of COVID-19 CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Zachary Eichholz, Sustainability Manager, City of Cape Canaveral

Wind and water will not be the only threats facing the

City of Cape Canaveral this year during the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season. Storm planning and preparation will also unfortunately have to take into account the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. In light of what is expected to be a very active hurricane season, the City is researching and implementing numerous precautionary measures to combat these issues. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. According to numerous private, public and university forecasting teams this year’s hurricane season could see anywhere from 14 to 20 named storms, with a high likelihood that at least some will have US impacts. The average among all official predictions is 17 named storms with eight hurricanes. To prepare, City Staff have begun installing semipermanent metal flood barriers that take the place of traditional sandbags. These new barriers are mounted on pre-installed holding racks affixed to door frames in as little as 30 seconds by a single staff member, replacing hours of time spent on filling and placing sandbags. These barriers will be used only when all occupants have left buildings. The City now also has its first mobile solar generator that does not require any gasoline or diesel fuel. It can continuously recharge after a storm via a one-kilowatt solar array to power City mobile devices, computers and lighting systems. Staff will also be utilizing a new handheld radio system to ensure consistent communications even if cell coverage goes down.

COVID-19 has added another element of preparation for City Staff, with an ever-present risk of localized outbreaks of the disease that are most likely to last well into next year until a vaccine is developed. Staff hurricane training has been conducted virtually, additional personal protective equipment (PPE) has been ordered and the City has stocked additional supplies of food and water. The City has also hosted a virtual preparation meeting for residents via the National Weather Service Melbourne Office. Other measures being taken to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 include: • The installation of plexiglass barriers across previously unprotected receptionists. • Scoping for the installation of Ultraviolet (UV)/Bi-Polar Ionization equipment within facility HVAC systems to disinfect air handlers and ductwork. • The development of a COVID-19 Reopening and Mitigation Strategy document to map out a phased and safe reopening of City facilities and services. • The purchasing of no contact thermometers to take Staff temperatures. • The procurement of a mobile UV disinfection lamp for new deep cleaning procedures of City facilities and fleet vehicles. Please stay safe this hurricane season in the time of COVID-19. Make sure you have an evacuation plan and enough supplies (don’t forget pets) to last you and each member of your family for at least a week. Follow the National Hurricane Center and the City on social media for continuing hurricane and COVID-19 updates.
