EDITOR’S LETTER

Well, it is already June and hard to believe that 2020 is nearly half over. Looking back on the last three months, I suddenly feel like a gambler standing at the Craps table, bet placed and waiting on the come-out roll. Let’s hope the back half of 2020 has better odds than the first half! First, let me start by saying thank you to the readers who reached out to us during the shutdown. It was encouraging to hear from you and great to know you enjoy the magazines, miss them when they are gone, and look forward to getting them. It was very disappointing to be unable to publish the April and May issues of Cocoa Beach Explorer, but it is great to be back in June. However, this issue will look a bit different than previous issues. At only 16 pages, it is back to the same size as 2017’s inaugural issue, but we have faith it will only be a short time until the magazine is back to normal. Due to current circumstances and requirements for social distancing, most events and gatherings have been canceled; therefore, the June issue is missing some of the sections which have always been included: Events at the Library, Community Corner, The Children’s Voice, and the Live Music section. These sections will be returning as the world (and the magazine) continues its trek back to normal. This month we have included a section called Getting Back to Business which includes some local businesses that have unshuttered their doors and are ready to welcome you back. Many of the businesses in this section have special offers listed in their ads, so make sure to take advantage of the offers. It is a win-win for you and them. I pray that June is a healthy, happy and productive month for everyone.

MALIK’S MESSAGE

COCOA BEACH UPDATE FROM THE MAYOR

Instinctively I go to call my dad on the phone as was my routine every morning to discuss current affairs/politics and realize he is no longer there. It sinks in, the pain of loss of not being able to speak with your loved ones after they pass. I still talk to him, but it is now a one-way communication…. My father instilled in me a strong sense of work ethic and morality; to always work hard, keep your word as your bond, and to just do the right thing. He was a journalist at a time when journalism was CONTRIBUTING about reporting facts and not slanted opinion pieces. Having worked WRITER: for many major news organizations including AP, Daily Telegraph, Mayor Ben Malik Time magazine, New York Times and most recently the Lakeland Ledger, he still read five newspapers every day until near the end when his eyesight was failing, and I enjoyed our discussions on all current affairs. He was a Democrat of the Kennedy era and an immigrant to this country. This guidance gave some of the basis of my centrist viewpoints on many topics. One of the last things he told me is that our “family is like the roots of a tree; we are four but bound together as one.” Now I finally understand the pain of loss, and what my wife went through over 29 years ago losing her father and then mother some 22 years ago (both passed away at Cape Canaveral Hospital). It is a problem that cannot be solved, and I pray over time the pain will ease. Covid 19 certainly represents the most challenging issue our city has dealt with due to so many unknowns. We are blessed to only have nine positive cases here in Cocoa Beach, of which six were past the incubation period, but due to lacking data from the Health Department, we cannot ascertain if these six cases have fully recovered or the current status of the remaining three cases. The more information we have the better we can make policy decisions. Given the low numbers we have (371 cases to date out of over 600,000 people in Brevard County represents .06% of the entire population) it warrants a reopening of our economy as the economic fallout is worse in terms of numbers of people impacted in our region. What we have learned thus far is it seems our policy of keeping the beaches open for recreation and providing a healthy outlet for our residents was sound as there are some scientific studies that indicate health benefits of vitamin D from sunshine and exercise. This virus is certainly more severe for the elderly and those with underlying health conditions (diabetes/hypertension/immune compromised, etc.). These folks still need to continue to avoid outside contacts as much as possible and be extra vigilant. Please continue to monitor our city’s Facebook page/website and sign up for email alerts on our website. Looking forward to our region’s return to manned spaceflight! God bless all of you and looking forward to better days ahead. Congrats to the class of 2020 (including my daughter, Megan from UCF, go Knights!). Thank you for your support and allowing me to serve as your Mayor. Please feel to contact me with any suggestions at bmalik@cityofcocoabeach.com or my cell at 321-794-6668. LIVE MUSIC SECTION WILL BE RETURNING TO COCOA BEACH EXPLORER Let’s face it— the world is quite a strange place right now. We each have our own opinions about to mask or not to mask, to open the beach or to not open the beach, to open the businesses or to not open the businesses, etc. But, no matter how you feel about the current situation, I think one thing we can all agree on is we would love our lives to go back to normal. I miss normal! Not a “new normal,” but that normal we didn’t even realize was normal until it wasn’t. During the current normal, our great local live music venues are focused on getting reopened while meeting the current safety guidelines which means that live music is extremely limited. Explorer magazines looks forward to a time when the venues are prosperous, the music is loud (or soft if that is your thing) and our Live Music section is once again filled to the brim. As local venues begin to reintroduce live music, we will once again add the Live Music section to the magazine. We have faith that we will be back in the music in no time! We would like to express a special thank you to our Live Music section sponsor KelTec. They have made the Live Music section possible since we began publishing the Cocoa Beach Explorer back in 2017. We greatly appreciate them sticking with us through these unusual times.

Congratulations Class of 2020! Our school year came to a close in a much different manner this year and the group it probably affected the most was our Seniors, the Class of 2020. The Pandemic forced the cancellation of many traditional events and activities that mark the end of the “Senior Year.” For example, they lost their Senior Prom and our traditional Graduation Ceremony. Fortunately, our community rallied around our Seniors. A group of parents who had been working together to provide an event called Project Graduation turned their attention to providing these young people with a series of celebrations to close out their Senior year. Led by Rebecca Pletcher, they worked with city officials and local organizations, like the Cocoa Beach Kiwanis Club and the Elks Lodge, to organize a “Senior Celebration” on May 22nd – which was the original date for our traditional graduation ceremony. It all began

with a walk on the beach, a light dinner on the city parking garage, followed by a car parade down Minutemen Causeway, and finished with a small event at the school football stadium. This Senior Celebration was incredibly fun and created memories that I am sure the Class of 2020 will never forget. All of the events required the contribution and collaboration of so many individuals and groups in our community. It was, of course, so appropriate for Seniors from Cocoa Beach High School to begin their celebration with a walk on the beach. I imagine that this will become a new tradition that all Senior classes will want as part of their celebration each year. We wish the Class of 2020 the best as they embark on the next chapter of their lives. We are so grateful to our community that we were able to send them off with such a memorable celebration.

Tips on How to Boost Your Immune System Smart, Simple Ways to Stay as Healthy as Possible CONTRIBUTED BY: Sara Paulson, Health First

HOW CAN I KEEP MY PETS SAFE DURING THIS TIME? CONTRIBUTED BY: Jeni Szmidt, Health First

While there is a lot to think about these days regarding planning for the people we love, we need to be sure to think about our pets as well. During these uncertain times, it is recommended to also come up with a proactive plan to protect our pets. According to the American Humane Society (AHS), there are many things you can do to protect your pet’s health and well-being. • First and foremost, please know there is no evidence people can get COVID-19 from pets. If you become sick but can still take care of your pet, please stay home with them. • Have a plan in the event you become hospitalized or too sick to care for your pet. Talk with your neighbors, family members, friends or co-workers to see if they could temporarily take care of your animals. Boarding facilities may also be able to help—but do your research ahead of time. • You should also be sure to prepare a pet supply kit. While it may never be necessary, having all of the supplies needed will be helpful in the event you ever find yourself in an emergency situation. Items in your kit should include the following:

• • •

Name and contact information for who can help with your pet (and a back up person in case the original person is not available) Daily care instructions Food and treats (for up to two weeks) A leash (and harness if needed)

• • • • • •

Blankets, a bed and toys A crate or carrier for transportation Vaccination records Information about your veterinary clinic Collars with ID tags Medications and prescriptions

If you are worried for any reason about your pet’s health, contact your veterinarian. If you have any questions about your own symptoms or health, please reach out to your healthcare provider or call our Centralized Scheduling office at 321.434.3131 for more information and to see if you can schedule a Virtual Visit.

With the public health crisis we’re all facing with COVID-19, many of us are wondering what we can do to protect ourselves and our loved ones. Beyond social distancing and staying at home, is it possible to boost our immune systems? In our latest installment of our “Healthy at Home” video series, we’re offering some smart but simple tips on how to stay as healthy as possible during this pandemic. The truth is, the best strategy to safeguard yourself against sickness is prevention. Click the link here to view the video, which offers the following helpful tips: • Follow a healthy diet. This may consist of leafy greens, fruit and lean meats, such as chicken and fish. • Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day – and staying away from sugary, carbonated drinks – will help to flush your body of toxins. • Controlling chronic diseases. Staying in touch with your primary care provider is important to maintain any other diseases that may compromise your immune system. • Get plenty of sleep. On average, an adult should try to get seven to nine hours of sleep per night, and children should get 11 to 13. • Try to reduce your stress. An easy way to do this could be keeping a daily routine and trying to stay positive. We hope these tips help you and your family during this trying time. Remember, we’re here for you when you need us – during this public health crisis and beyond. Stay safe and be well.

Young Entrepreneur is a “Cut” Above WRITTEN BY: Doug Baker, Editor, Cocoa Beach Explorer

What were you doing when you were 17 years old? Most of us were busy just being a typical teenager— going out and hanging with friends, playing video games or something along those lines. We did not even dream about owning our own business; well, maybe we dreamed about it, but those dreams were for the future not for the present. Corey Bollinger, however, is not your typical teenager. He did not just dream about the future. At the ripe young age of 17, he began living life as a business owner. Yes, you read it correctly, a 17-year-old business owner. Starting in 2017, Corey spent his time cutting grass and building a client base around the beachside communities—all of this while keeping up with his homeschool studies. Fast-forward to 2020, Corey, now 18 and a homeschool graduate, has been swiftly expanding his business, Lawns by Corey, providing monthly complete lawn maintenance to over eighty clients. 14 | C O C OABE ACHE X PLORER .C OM

If you ask Corey what his favorite thing to do is (besides boating and skateboarding), he will answer “making money cutting grass.” Much of the money he has earned over the past few years he has turned around and reinvested into his company by purchasing state-of-the-art lawn equipment, a new truck, and an enclosed trailer for all his lawn equipment. He also makes sure to maintain a fully licensed and insured business. Currently, Corey is looking to grow his business to between 100 and 120 clients. He feels this is the sweet spot for the number of clients he can comfortably handle on his own and still provide those clients with top-notch service. He chooses to do all the work himself and does not farm it out or hire other people. This way he knows the work is done to his standards. I asked Corey how he got into the business, and he replied, “I’ve learned to love the business through my Dad’s lawn mower shop. Being raised around lawn mowers, I have come to

realize that quality equipment makes a huge difference. Plus, Dad taught me how to take good care of that equipment!” He finished by telling me, “I love working outdoors. It’s a bonus that I get to work for myself and make a comfortable income.” To say the least, it is impressive seeing such a young man with such fierce ambition. Corey is a young man striving to reach his goals and showing how hard work and perseverance make dreams a reality. The sky is the limit for this young entrepreneur!
