EDITOR’S LETTER
As I look on my planner for the month of May it seems like we all have a bunch of dates and events to remember coming up. Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, Thunder on Cocoa Beach (and all the parties), are just the big ones that jump right out at me. Oh yeah, all us parents can’t forget, the last day of school and for a few parents and students, high school graduation is in the mix too!! Well, let’s get right to it and jump into a few things in this month’s issue. We got a chance to try the new Flavour Kitchen & Wine Bar and caught up with Andrew Bunin to ask him a few questions about one of the newest places in Cocoa Beach. Also, check out all the information about Thunder on Cocoa Beach. Our coverage gives you the race map, schedule of events, and some extra information about some of the race teams showing up this year. You also don’t want to miss reading our Cocoa Beach High School spotlight article. We have some pretty amazing young adults right here in our community!

MALIK’S
MESSAGE
FROM THE MAYOR
C O C OA B E ACH U P DAT E
written by Mayor Ben Malik
Wow it is really here, our son Christopher (Chris) graduates from Cocoa Beach High School and moves on to the next phase of his life (off to college to study Business, he is interested in being a banker like his dad :)! He said he likes the fact you can make a difference by assisting small businesses grow and being engaged in your community. My wife has been dreading this day for some time, but as we talk about our future and being able to spend more time together, she is slowly getting less apprehensive about our son going off to school. She was always the parent at home raising the children and is worried about how they will manage. It is my one regret not spending more time with my children early on as I was so absorbed with my career. (For young parents, my old man advice is spend as much time with your children as you can. Enjoy those moments; yes, they can stress you out, exhaust you, but the good far outweighs the bad.)

Fat Snook is moving to the site of the former Mango Tree (welcome to downtown!) Flavour Kitchen and Wine Bar opened in downtown (15 N. Orlando Ave. Give it a try the food is amazing. Brothers Andrew Bunin and Chef Jason Bunin and family will take good care of you!) Grace’s Grill (260 N. Orlando Ave.) is a nice addition downtown with real milkshakes, burgers and a reminder of simpler times.
Thank you for your support and allowing me to serve as your Mayor. Please feel to contact me with any suggestions at bmalik@cityofcocoabeach.com or my cell at 321-794-6668.
We actually got to take a few days off over Spring Break and drove up the coast to New Smyrna (cool beach/surf town with a great walkable riverfront). We left our 18-year-old son home alone for a few days. Expecting the worst, we were pleasantly surprised the house was still standing, dog was still alive, and laundry and dishes done (no giant party per our neighbors the Colburns. Good job, Chris, you are becoming an adult!). So maybe instilling a few values in your children works...how about that! All is not lost on the future of our youth. Parents need to be parents and stay engaged in your children’s lives! City updates: • North Banana River Force Main Extension Project is going to bid and looking for final bid award recommendation by June 7th (this will remedy north end sewer issues) • Maritime Hammock Park recreational amenities approved by Land Management Committee with fitness stations installed along north side of the park • Mobil station at 4th St. North and Orlando is being converted to a new restaurant/gastropub (fuel will still be available) • City Charter Review Committee presents their recommendation to City Commission on May 3rd. (Once the final ballot language is passed, there will be information shared to discuss with residents about what is being placed on the ballot, so voters can make an informed decision. Please be an informed voter.) • Rec Center is getting a new paint job, and the nets on the Cocoa Beach Country Club golf driving range are getting repaired

Cocoa Beach Spotlight these are the young people in your Cocoa Beach High School JROTC Team To Compete in National Academic Bowl Championship After advancing through two phases of online competition, the Cocoa Beach High School’s JROTC Academic Team composed of Team Captain Jonathan Parent and members Kalik Pavliga, Aaron Netterstrom, Brittany Stanley will compete in person at the Championship event in Washington, DC. The 2018 U.S. Army JROTC Academic Bowl Championship will be held on the campus of The Catholic University of America, June 22-26, 2018. This event is sponsored by the U.S. Army Cadet Command, JROTC Headquarters and is conducted by College Options Foundation. Cocoa Beach High School’s JROTC team earned top scores out of the 1,393 Army JROTC teams that competed from around the world. The team is one of only thirty-two Army JROTC Academic Bowl teams in the nation to advance to the National Academic Bowl competition, which includes an all-expense paid trip to the Championship event in DC. During the two fast-paced preliminary rounds, students were tested on their
knowledge of JROTC curriculum, English, math, and science. One of the main goals of the JROTC Academic Bowl is to prepare students for state exit/graduation exams as well as college entrance exams, such as the SAT and ACT. The winner of the U.S. Army JROTC Academic Championship will compete against the winners of the U.S. Air Force, Marine
Corps, and Navy JROTC Academic Bowls in the JROTC Joint Service Academic Bowl Championship. The JROTC Leadership & Academic Bowl (JLAB) is a nationally recognized academic competition created exclusively for JROTC students. THUNDER ON COCOA BEACH
New Events and Returning Race Favorites The Space Coast Super Boat Grand Prix - Thunder on Cocoa Beach is entering its ninth year, and each year it seems to outdo the year before with more events, race boats and parties. This year, they have added a few new events to the roster. One of these all-new events is Race the Racers. For the first time, you and your kids can race against the racers…with RC boats of course! On Saturday, May 19th from 1-4pm on the lake in front of the Exploration Tower in Port Canaveral, RC boats will be set up for racing. You will have the opportunity to race an RC boat against one of the racers. You don’t need your own boat; they will have them on site for you.

Plus, while you are at the port, you might as well stick around for the brand-new Saturday night party at Rising Tide.

THUNDER ON COCOA BEACH
Norwegian Race Team to Rev Their Engines at Thunder on Cocoa Beach Who will you be rooting for? Maybe you don’t want to make your mind up just yet. With 30+ boats on their way here, we are sure to see some old favorites and maybe someone new for you to cheer on. Since Thunder on Cocoa Beach has become one of the racers’ favorite race locations, word spreads and everyone wants to join us here in Cocoa Beach. It’s amazing just how far the word has spread. One of the new race teams attending this year is Team Jesse World all the way from Norway. They are owned by Jan and Ula Zaborowski with co-owner Niclas Johansson. They have a Turkish driver, Isik Ugur, and an English throttleman, Miles Jennings.
The team was known as Team Zabo in the UIM Class 1 World Championship. Through the years, the Zabo team has been a regular on the podiums and have twice made Runner-up in the overall UIM World Championship and won the European Championship. Because they are bringing their team to race in the US, they have opened the door for other Class 1 teams to follow.
Team captain Øivind “Simon” Dreier Sivertsen says, “We are new to US Offshore Racing, but no novices in Offshore racing.”
We welcome them and hope they enjoy Cocoa Beach as much as we do!

Space Coast Super Boat Grand Prix features the biggest and fastest race boats in the world. The racers who pilot these machines are acutely aware of the environment they race in. Super Boat wants you, the fans, to join them in this awareness. No anchoring by any vessel on or above sea grass, hard bottom or coral. By doing so you may be subject to criminal and/or civil penalties. All vessels should maintain a lookout for endangered species like sea turtles, smalltooth sawfish and manatees. If spotted, the event will stop until the animals clear the area of their own volition.

NEWEST HOT SPOT
IN DOWNTOWN COCOA BEACH
The newest place in Downtown Cocoa Beach for delectable delights...Flavour Kitchen and Wine Bar. Doug and I had a chance last week to slide onto a bar chair, watch Chef Jason work his magic and enjoy an outstanding evening of lovely edible treats and liquid libations. Owner, Andrew Bunin, gave us a little insight as to how Flavour came to be and a preview of their amazing menu.
THE BEGINNING The concept of Flavour Kitchen and Wine Bar came from myself, Mark Phelps and my brother, Jason Bunin. As you know, Sandbar Sports Grill has been in Cocoa Beach for 13 years now. I moved here. I’m raising my kids here, and I have really fallen in love with this beachside community. I have been trying to get my brother to move here for many years now, as he has been a chef in New York City for the last 25 years. I think it was my birthday party last July when it finally sunk in that he and his wife, Caron, should move here, and we could open a business together. The two of us have pretty much been in the restaurant business since high school just in slightly different aspects: Jason more in the kitchen, and me the front of the house — bartending, doing promotions and creating a really fun atmosphere! So, along with Mark, my partner at Sandbar who might as well be my other big brother, I decided to look around Cocoa Beach for locations. When Oasis Shaved Ice moved north, we thought that would be a perfect
location for the concept we wanted to do. We met with Ed and Heidi from the Heidelberg and really hit it off. We both are excited about the growing downtown community in Cocoa Beach! Once when we heard about the new parking garage going in, we were sold! THE NAME After I moved to Cocoa Beach, Mark and I and our mentor, Joey Longo, opened a nightclub called FLAVOUR. When we heard about Jason’s culinary delights and
Chef Jason Bunin and Andrew Bunin concept — how he wants everyone to come into his kitchen, so he can make them dinner — the name just fit. Flavour was back! With a twist, I mean with a glass of wine! POTIONS We have five sangrias, or as Chef Jason likes to call them: potions. Chef Jason handcrafts all the potions and has a mixture of fruit or vegetables to go with each one. There are two reds: Little Red Corvette which is topped with sweet cherries and drunken
20
Cocoa Beach Explorer
apples, and Magic Carpet Ride which uses local apples. We have two Chardonnays: Great White with mangoes, fresh pineapple, and pear; and White Lighting which has Granny Smith apples, grapes and is topped with Lychee. The most popular so far seems to be the Rose-a... as chef Jay likes to say, the Rose-Colored Glass. This delight has fresh strawberry, cucumber, and basil. As they say, ‘if it’s not broke; don’t fix it,’ so as of now these will be our main stays, but I’m sure chef Jay will be creating new ones as we get settled in. THE MENU The response we have gotten from the menu has been overwhelming to say the least. So far, the Seared Sea Scallops and Grilled Lollipop Lamb Chops have been the number one small plates that we offer. By far, the Crispy Whole Snapper has been the number one entrée; people are raving it is the best they’ve ever tasted. The presentation on the snapper is out of this world — a whole snapper served over green rice and peas and topped with a red pepper slaw. It looks like you cooked a fish that has hair!

As for our pizzas, I would say the Braised Short Ribs is our top seller. Chef Jason cooks short ribs all day just to use it as a topping for a pizza. You can’t forget about the Truffled Blue Cheese Fries on the side as a great complement to all the dishes. Hopefully, you save room for dessert. Chocolate Soufflé with marshmallow topping has definitely been a hit so far. The menu will change seasonally with a few of the signature items obviously sticking around. We do offer daily specials. All the daily specials will be based on Chef Jay‘s mood and what looks good when he goes shopping for the produce and proteins, and what he wants to create any given day. So, be sure to stop by or check out our Facebook page @flavourkitchencb as we will update them daily. You might even see one on the Wake Up Cocoa Beach page as well, LOL. BRUNCH Chef will be cooking brunch Sundays from 11 AM till 3 PM. Our brunch menu is a completely different menu from the dinner menu. The favorites so far have been the Eggs Benedict and Breakfast Nachos. The kids love the fresh-baked chocolate donut holes topped with fresh strawberries and homemade chocolate sauce. Chef Jason’s BIG Banana Pancake with warm, fresh-berry syrup and homemade whipped cream has yet to be finished by just one person. THANK YOU There is so much I want the people of Cocoa Beach to know about Flavour Kitchen and Wine Bar. I want them to know how appreciative we are for the opportunity to own your own business. I want to thank them for giving me an opportunity to work with my big brother and my good friend Mark Phelps. I want them to come in and try my brother’s cooking or maybe one of his potions. I want to tell them that after they have a great meal at FLAVOUR, they can go hear a band at Sandbar LOL. I asked Chef Jason what he wanted to let people know, and his direct quote was, “You can’t get this food anywhere in Brevard County.” That pretty much sums it up! So, thanks for reading this article, and we hope to see you in Chef Jason’s Kitchen, a.k.a. Flavour Kitchen and Wine Bar, in downtown Cocoa Beach. Cocoa Beach Explorer

COCOA BEACH JR./SR. HIGH SCHOOL NEEDS YOU!!
written by: Karyle Green, Ed.D., Principal, Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. HS
Looking for ways to get involved in your community?
Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School has just the ticket. We are seeking people in the community to volunteer hours during the school day. It doesn’t need to be every day or every week for that matter. A couple of times a month? A specific day each month? We could use your presence on our campus. Volunteering isn’t always glamorous, but it always meets a specific need. Right now, our need is eyes and ears around campus to help keep us safe. In the morning before school starts, having a couple of extra sets of eyes in the parking lot or in the areas where students congregate is a great thing. Striking up conversations to see what our young people are interested in helps to get to know us. Or how about the lunch hour? We have an extremely limited number of supervisors at lunch and an enormous number of places for students to “hang out.” We really don’t have many issues at lunch, but it would be nice to have enough eyes to let the students go out back and get some exercise. I know I would love to take those who wanted to go out walking at lunch. But I have a post, too, which I must man. If we had some volunteers, we could offer some activity for students. Another time it would help to have volunteers is during the school day itself . . . just to monitor hallways. When students ask teachers to leave class to “go to the bathroom” or “get a drink,” some tend to wander. Having some people patrolling the hallways would alleviate that tendency. And, of course, at dismissal. That’s a high need time of the day. We are definitely short of supervision at that time period. Aside from supervision, there are several other ways to volunteer – how about reading with students, helping out in a classroom, working on office tasks, mentoring, chaperoning, etc.? Working with students is always a rewarding activity! There are different types of volunteers in the Brevard Public Schools. Some volunteering services require fingerprinting, others don’t. If you are interested, please contact our volunteer coordinator, Lisa Peloquin, at 321-783-1776 or peloquin.lisa@brevardschools.org to see how you can get involved. We need YOU!

Best Bets for May Movies to Beat the Heat
By: Jim Warthen
Summer’s just about upon us, and as we Floridians know very well, sometimes we need good ways to beat the heat. What better way to escape the heat than relaxing in a nice cool movie theater? This May, there are quite a few great flicks on the way guaranteed to help you forget the sweltering heat! Here are a few previews of the big blockbusters headed to theaters this summer, as well as a smaller film that might have flown under your radar that should be worth checking out.
Avengers: Infinity War (April 27)
Tully (May 4)
Ok, so this one isn’t exactly fair, since it released in April, and you’re reading this after the movie has already released. But we can’t start this out without talking about this huge movie that kicks off the summer movie season. If you’re at all a fan of the superhero movie craze, this is a must-see movie. When Marvel comics was first acquired by Disney in 2009, they started a very ambitious project, connecting multiple movie franchises over almost a decade. This movie begins the culmination of this project. You’ll get to see the Avengers team up with all the other characters we’ve seen on screen over the last 10 years. Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Ant-Man, even the Guardians of the Galaxy all team up on this one to try and stop the big bad Thanos from destroying life as we know it. Events from all these characters’ previous movies will tie into this film. If you haven’t seen this yet, get out and do it. It’s bound to set all sorts of box office records, and who doesn’t want to be a part of history?
Another comedy; this one isn’t as hyped as the aforementioned Overboard. It starts Charlize Theron as a mom who gets some surprise help from a nanny. At first, she’s resistant to the help, but as she begins to warm to the newcomer, a unique bond forms. Jason Reitman directs this one, and if his history (Juno, Up in the Air) is any indication, this one should be pretty good. Theron also tends to only pick projects that she’s passionate about, so I’d say this one is a very safe bet.
Overboard (May 4)
Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25)
This remake of the fantastic 1987 comedy of the same name starring Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell has big shoes to fill. Anna Faris (Scary Movie) has plenty of experience in comedic roles, but she’ll need to bring her A-game in order to kick the summer off with a good laugh. I’d give this one 50/50 odds of being a great comedy, but a 100% chance of being better than sitting in the sun watching your ice cream melt.

Deadpool 2 (May 18) This movie is a follow up to 2016’s Deadpool which proved that even an R rating can’t keep a superhero movie from being a huge hit. Ryan Reynolds stars as the title character, but he also has a very personal passion for this series. He was a driving force behind getting the first movie made, and hopefully his passion for this project will translate into an equally awesome sequel. If you love gratuitous violence coupled with 4th-wall-breaking humor, this one’s for you.
This one’s another in a huge movie franchise, also acquired by Disney (noticing a pattern?). The latest entry in the Star Wars universe is a prequel that serves to give us a peek into the life of everyone’s favorite scruffy-looking nerf herder before he and his best bud Chewbacca helped Luke Skywalker blow up the Death Star. Traditionally, Star Wars prequels have received mixed reviews at best, but Ron Howard is directing this one (A Beautiful Mind, Apollo 13), so expectations are high. Definitely worth seeing if you’re trying to get out of the sun for a couple for hours.
