EDITOR’S LETTER

I was reading an article about Christmas decorations and the affects it has on us. Psychology experts say putting up your Christmas trees and decorations earlier can make you feel happier since the holidays usually remind us of our less-stressful childhoods. Not sure if that is it or if it just reminds us of family and friends. Whatever it is, it does seem to make us feel happier. (Except when you are trying to untangle the old strands of Christmas lights.) Keep this in mind as we are working our way through November. Maybe consider starting a little earlier this year. Ok, on to this month’s issue. We seem to have an art theme going on this issue. First, Mark Rendell the Principal at Cocoa Beach Jr/Sr High School tells us about the spectacular mural that Kole Trent did for the school. Special thanks to the class of 2009 for coming together and raising the funds to commission Kole, so he could do another great mural in our community. Next, we do a little spotlight on a new business in downtown Cocoa Beach, Cocoa Beach Essentials, which offers a home for local artists to show off their work. Read through the article and then drop by and take a look around.

CONTACT INFO

It’s November, so you know what that means…. Cocoa Beach Art Festival. This year is going to be bigger and better. Make sure to mark your calendars. November 29 – December 1 in Downtown Cocoa Beach. Finally, Freedom 7 Elementary shares how a Cocoa Beach local that has gone on to work with the United Nations came back to speak with the 6th graders on Sustainable Development Goals. We love when locals come back and give back. Remember—while it won’t take away your financial concerns email: or make your life less info@cocoabeachexplorer.com chaotic, those experts phone: say your Christmas tree can 321-759-6064 serve as a form of therapy. So, go ahead and put up that tree and deck the halls a little early this season. I’m going to try and talk Tracee into getting our trees up early this year. Wish me luck.

While you’re at it, keep your decorations up well into the New Year if you want to. You aren’t crazy. You might actually be mentally better off than the rest of us!

MALIK’S

FROM THE MAYOR

MESSAGE C O C OA B E ACH U P DAT E

CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Mayor Ben Malik

November is here with the promise of cooler weather to come. It will be nice to dust off some sweaters for just a bit! I had a fabulous birthday in October capped off by a long weekend (Columbus Day) of 3 days of fun surf in our little town. So much fun paddling out and trading waves with my friends out in the lineup— Cocoa Beach is truly a special place to live! The National Kidney Foundation Surf Contest also ran during Columbus Day weekend at the Cocoa Beach Pier and enjoyed the better October surf. A good time was had by all! Best invention ever, Biofreeze. So, when your 55-year-old knee tweaks from trying to hit the lip on the inside, apply some Biofreeze, and you will be hitting the lip like it owed you some money! I feel Lawrence Welk touting the benefits of Geritol during his TV show (some of you more mature folks will understand)! I had the pleasure of visiting the Cocoa Beach High School last month as part of an annual event, A Day In The Life Of The Indian River Lagoon, where 1,600 students at about 40 sites from Volusia to Palm Beach counties were paired with local environmental partners to explore and study the lagoon ecosystem. The Cocoa Beach High School students were led by environmental and marine science teacher Jim Mardulier and local organizations included Surfrider Foundation, Florida Institute of Technology and St. John’s River Water District. The annual event was started by S.E.A. a Difference, Inc., and teaches students hands-on learning about the lagoon and the importance to our ecosystem. The Cocoa Beach students were excited to do actual field research, collecting flora and fauna and testing water samples. It certainly beats reading a textbook! The initial oxygen readings in the water testing indicated significant increase in the amount of oxygen in the waterways which is certainly good news for our lagoon! Instilling a sense of stewardship amongst the students will benefit future generations to come!

We have lots of upcoming festivities in November (besides our highly entertaining City Commission meetings, 1st Thursday and 3rd Thursday of the month!): • November 6th - Cocoa Beach Chamber and City of Cocoa Beach - Cocoa Beach Main Street host Wednesday Friendsday at the top of the parking garage from 5:30-7:30 pm • November 15th - Cocoa Beach Friday Fest (Karalyn and The Dawn Patrol will be playing) • November 28th - Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day at 8 am. The race will benefit Get on Track (the project to refurbish the track at Cocoa Beach JR/SR High School). Cocoa Beach Kiwanis is leading the campaign to raise $450,000 for the track. For information on GET ON TRACK, visit cbhsgetontrack.com. Online donations may be made through this race or at GoFundMe.com/cbhsgetontrack • November 29th - Cocoa Beach Art Show kicks off downtown with a Friday Night Street Party • November 30th - December 1st – Cocoa Beach Art Show – downtown, 9 am- 5pm: art, music, vendors, Cocoa Beach Fire Department Chili, kettle corn, good times! Thank you for your support and allowing me to serve as your Mayor. Please feel to contact me with any suggestions at bmalik@cityofcocoabeach.com or my cell at 321-794-6668.

NEW BUSINESS IN DOWNTOWN COCOA BEACH RENEWS AND REVITALIZES

WRITTEN BY: Tracee Baker, Cocoa Beach Explorer Designer PHOTOS: Provided by Cocoa Beach Essentials

FIND US ON

Just across from Coconuts On The Beach is a new and quirky beach shop called Cocoa Beach Essentials. Owners Debbie and Joel Frey envisioned a place where beach goers, locals, and snowbirds could find necessities, décor, and indulgences. “Once I had the walls painted, my husband wanted me to add sea life, but instead, our walls are covered with local artists’ work,” explained Debbie. After moving to Cocoa Beach from Tennessee two years ago, Debbie began taking painting lessons, rekindling her interest in art from her teens. When they opened the shop, Debbie invited some of her teachers and a professional oil painter from her condo to display their paintings on the walls. Other artists she admired on Facebook chose to place their art in the shop. As customers began requesting décor with sea life, the artists began to expand their subject focus to turtles, mermaids, lizards, crabs, and sharks. Two jewelry artists joined the group, and Debbie and Joel began to create

coastal-themed signs and figures with reclaimed wood and shells. There are still plenty of beach-going items in the shop along with a small pharmaceutical area, purses, towels, beach bags, and hats. It is child-friendly, with kites, balls, stuffed ocean critters, beachy books, life vests, and children’s clothing. As Debbie orders merchandise, she always looks for lightweight, non-breakable gifts that she can mail to her grandson. Beach related signs, hooks, clocks, and windchimes decorate the walls and shelves. If you are in a pinch, birthday cards, giftbags, and small, affordable gifts including wine bottle stoppers, bottle openers, reusable drink containers, and jewelry are reasonably priced. Cold drinks and snacks are available if you are out for a walk or bike ride, and of course, Cocoa Beach and NASA souvenirs are available. Drop by to check out Joel’s reclaimed wood Christmas tree and the large assortment of coastal ornaments.

SIXTH GRADERS AT FREEDOM 7 ELEMENTARY LEARN ABOUT THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDG’S) WITH COCOA BEACH NATIVE CONTRIBUTING WRITERS: Jenny Noe & Charlotte Masiello-Riome PHOTOS: Provided by Jenny Noe

As established by the United Nations (UN), the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. The goals address the global challenges we face including those related to poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, peace, and justice. Sixth-grade classes were privileged to have a guest speaker, Charlotte Masiello-Riome, who happens to be a Cocoa Beach native, come to Freedom 7 to speak. She has spent most of her career working both inside and alongside the UN in an effort to make these goals, set for attainment by 2030, a reality. Charlotte grew up in Cocoa Beach and attended Freedom 7 Elementary, starting in kindergarten. She continued on to Roosevelt Middle School and graduated from Cocoa Beach Junior Senior High School in 1987. She 10

completed her study at American University in Washington, D.C. She was appointed to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization in 2001, and she served as lead focal point for global task groups as well as other UN-led initiatives. Today, Charlotte leads Advocacy and Policy for the SDG 2 Advocacy Hub which brings together nongovernmental organizations, agricultural networks, nutritionists, campaigners, civil society, the private sector and UN agencies to coordinate efforts toward achievement of SDG 2 (Ending Hunger) by 2030. Charlotte still calls Cocoa Beach home, and she returns annually with her family to catch up with friends and relatives while doing beach cleanup volunteering and reconnecting with city activities.

passion and keen understanding of how their positive actions impact the world. It has been a real pleasure and makes me even more proud to be from this great city.”

It was a pleasure having Charlotte come to Freedom 7 to speak with our sixth-grade students and teachers who are diving into the SDG’s as they start their journey toward their final sixth-grade Exhibition project and showcase. Charlotte says, “I was impressed with the maturity of knowledge and questions by the classes. I learned so much from them, as they did from me, on their ideas to reach the SDGs. I am excited by their

Students presented various actions they could take in their own communities to help achieve the SDG’s. These included focusing on reducing food waste, beach clean-ups, reducing plastic use, paying attention to healthy diet and eating more sustainably, focus on recycling in their homes and communities, volunteering and supporting shelters, and even fundraisers where money is needed to improve the lives of others. Having this opportunity to connect with someone who is so intertwined in making the SDGs a reality through her work has helped crystallize knowledge within our future leaders.

ALUMNI CONTRIBUTIONS BEAUTIFY CAMPUS COCOA BEACH JR/SR HIGH SCHOOL We are so blessed to have graduates who care about our school. When the Class of 2009 held their reunion last year they wanted to do something special to give back to the school. They put together some funds and commissioned local artist, Kole Trent, to paint a mural on campus. And Kole knows the campus well, as he is also a graduate of Cocoa Beach – Class of 2012.

“It’s been such an amazing experience coming back to the school I graduated from and being able to bring my creativity to life in the hallways I once walked hoping to inspire and bring smiles to all the kids throughout the years. Thank you so much to the class of ‘09 for helping fund this project to make it happen!”

If you have seen any of Kole’s work, you know that he often features marine life with sea turtles and

jellyfish gliding through the ocean. Kole finished the mural just a few weeks ago, and it is spectacular. We want to thank the members of the Class of 2009 for sponsoring this amazing addition to our campus. We are exploring the possibility of bringing Kole back to work with students in our art classes to co-create some more pieces like this. You can check out Kole’s work at www.Trentartgallery.com.

OUTSTANDING OCTOPUS! CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Deborah Frey, Ed.D.

The octopus is one of the most interesting sea creatures in the ocean. The animal has a large oval head, two big eyes, and eight arms called tentacles. The tentacles have two rows of suckers that are used to hold food or move along the bottom of the ocean. The octopus uses its hard beak to crack the shells of crabs, clams, and even lobsters! It’s an escape artist and can squeeze into very narrow spaces. When it is attacked, an octopus shoots out a cloud of black ink and swims quickly away with a watery, jetpropulsion system. The octopus is able to change its color and texture to hide from sharks and other large fish.

GLITTERY OCTOPUS Begin with a piece of colored poster board. Follow the pattern for the octopus head and body, below. After cutting out the head, poke or punch eight holes along the bottom. Using glue and glitter, decorate the head and body with contrasting colors. Cut out large white circles for eyes and smaller black circles for pupils. Thread wide ribbon, tissue, or crepe paper through the holes to create the arms.

OCTOPUS MOBILE Begin with a large piece of poster board, folded in half. Cut two large egg-shaped, octopus heads with four legs. Cut one head halfway down from the top and the other head halfway up from the bottom. Slide the two octopi together so it becomes 3-D with eight legs. Use markers to draw eyes, mouth, and suckers on the tentacles. Poke or punch 8-10 holes in the tentacles. Draw, decorate, and cut out other sea life. Attach to octopus with yarn or string.

FRIENDLY LINK OCTOPUS Begin with a piece of colored poster board. Cut out a large circle for the octopus head. Cut out large white circles for eyes, smaller black circles for pupils, and an orange smiling mouth. Dab white paint on the head to create polka-dots. Cut colored construction paper into 6” x 2” strips. For best results, cut 20 strips per arm and link them together with glue or staples. Attach arms to body with glue or staples.

Please send future column ideas to Dr. Deb at drdeborahfrey@yahoo.com
