EDITOR’S LETTER
I was reading an article about Christmas decorations and the affects it has on us. Psychology experts say putting up your Christmas trees and decorations earlier can make you feel happier since the holidays usually remind us of our lessstressful childhoods. Not sure if that is it, or if it just reminds us of family and friends. Whatever it is, it does seem to make us feel happier. (Except when you are trying to untangle the old strands of Christmas lights.) Keep this in mind as we are working our way through November. Maybe consider starting a little earlier this year. Ok, on to this month’s issue. We seem to have an art theme going on this issue. First, Mark Rendell the Principal at Cocoa Beach Jr/Sr High School tells us about the spectacular mural Kole Trent did for the school. Special thanks to the class of 2009 for coming together and raising the funds to commission Kole, so he could do another great mural in our community. Next, City Council Member, Angela Raymond shares with us an article about new art going up all around Cape Canaveral. It’s November, so you know what that means…. It means, lots of events and fun stuff to do. Here are a few events to mark on your calendar. Food Truck Street Party, Cape Canaveral Reindeer Run, and Cocoa Beach Art Festival. Finally, the City of Cape Canaveral tells us about their partnership with the Brevard Zoo to do some oyster gardening. Remember—while it won’t take away your financial concerns or make your life less chaotic, those experts say your Christmas tree can serve as a form of therapy. So, go ahead and put up that tree and deck the halls a little early this season. I’m going to try and talk Tracee into getting our trees up early this year. Wish me luck. While you’re at it, keep your decorations up well into the new year if you want to. You aren’t crazy. You might actually be mentally better off than the rest of us!

Oysters may seem like ugly, weird blobs of goop that are only good for eating, but strange looks aside, they are in fact one of the many important solutions in the restoration of the 156-mile-long Indian River Lagoon (IRL). Acting as a keystone species - or a species that helps hold an ecosystem together - oysters have the incredible ability to clean the water around them. One adult oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water per day (1500 times their body volume), removing both organic and inorganic particles from the water column, including algae and muck. After using these particles to obtain nutrients and minerals, oysters spit the water they have consumed back out into the environment. This results in improved water quality and a healthier ecosystem. When multiplied by tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands, the filtering power of oysters becomes even more apparent. Unfortunately, oyster populations in the IRL in recent years have significantly declined due to overharvesting, coastal construction, an overall decrease in water quality and even boat wakes, which can dislodge oysters and wash them ashore where they dry out and die.
shell halves that are covered in oyster larvae, called spat. Gardeners then place the shells in the cages provided to them by the zoo and string them up under their dock one foot below the water’s surface and left to grow for 6 to 9 months. Once the growing season has ended the mature oysters are harvested by zoo staff and used in oyster reef restoration projects. To date, over 500,000 live oysters have been harvested. Starting in November, the City will begin its first oyster garden underneath the Banana River Park dock in order to help save our Indian River Lagoon with the hope that other residents will be inspired to follow suit and begin their own oyster gardens through the zoo’s free program. For more info on how to become an oyster gardener please visit the link below:
However, thanks in part to the Brevard Zoo, oysters are beginning to make a comeback. The Brevard Zoo’s Restore Our Shores program empowers residents to become active members in the restoration of the lagoon’s ecosystem, providing them one of the easiest and most cost effective ways in which to improve water quality - oyster gardening. The Brevard Zoo, in partnership with the Brevard County Natural Resources Management Department, provides annual workshops to county residents that teach attendees how to manage and maintain an oyster garden should they have a suitable dock for placement. This voluntary program allows the public to learn about oysters, how to raise them in freely provided cages (two per household) and showcases how the oysters are used after they are collected in the restoration of the lagoon. Each year, oyster shells are donated from local restaurants through the zoo’s Shuck and Share program. Gardeners then receive bags of oyster restoreourshores.org/living-shoreline/oyster-mats-gardening/#oystergardeningtab c a navera l e x p l o re r

ALUMNI CONTRIBUTIONS BEAUTIFY CAMPUS COCOA BEACH JR/SR HIGH SCHOOL We are so blessed to have graduates who care about our school. When the Class of 2009 held their reunion last year they wanted to do something special to give back to the school. They put together some funds and commissioned local artist, Kole Trent, to paint a mural on campus. And Kole knows the campus well, as he is also a graduate of Cocoa Beach – Class of 2012.
“It’s been such an amazing experience coming back to the school I graduated from and being able to bring my creativity to life in the hallways I once walked hoping to inspire and bring smiles to all the kids throughout the years. Thank you so much to the class of ‘09 for helping fund this project to make it happen!”
If you have seen any of Kole’s work, you know that he often features marine life with sea turtles and
jellyfish gliding through the ocean. Kole finished the mural just a few weeks ago, and it is spectacular. We want to thank the members of the Class of 2009 for sponsoring this amazing addition to our campus. We are exploring the possibility of bringing Kole back to work with students in our art classes to co-create some more pieces like this. You can check out Kole’s work at www.Trentartgallery.com.

You may have noticed that there are several new art projects in Cape Canaveral. I ride my bike around the city on most days and discover new additions all the time! During October’s Friday Fest, the city dedicated and lit up our biggest endeavor yet! Anon, an artist from West Palm Beach created a huge mural on the back of our racquetball courts in honor of the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Lunar Landing that we have been celebrating all year. It is just beautiful, and we are very proud of it and hope that this is the first of many murals in Cape Canaveral! During the summer, the traffic boxes were wrapped with different artists’ depictions of space and in particular, the Lunar Landing. Artists submitted their drawings and the best entries were chosen and can be viewed along A-1A and North Atlantic Avenue. A few were created by local school children. I play tennis every Friday morning at Cape Canaveral, and naturally, I ride my bike to and from the courts! While playing I noticed some of the public works crew moving my bike around near the bike rack. I thought they were just getting ready for the Friday night festivities and tried to concentrate on my 12

strokes! That night, when I returned for Friday Fest, I was pleasantly surprised to lock my bike up on a brand new lime green tennis racket! All of the bike racks in Cape Canaveral are sculptures! Some are turtles, dolphins, and we have a silly bookworm at our library! These are colorful additions! Every time I see new ones erected around town, I smile! Cities should be fun! Art strengthens our quality of life. Cape Canaveral has always supported the Arts. The City has hosted local Art Shows and a Children’s Show from Brevard County Schools annually at our library. Manatee Park was the site for the Space Coast Art Festival for the last two years; it was a wonderful setting with the sculptures of the turtles and the manatee. Our new City Hall boasts outstanding paintings, photographs, pottery and sculptures from local artists. It is a joy to walk in the door to take a look around and to appreciate the rich history we have here. We have to look forward to a bright, fulfilling future and at the same time applaud the positive accomplishments in Cape Canaveral. CAPE CANAVERAL REINDEER RUN CELEBRATES ITS 24TH YEAR! CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Aaron Leyte, Recreation Coordinator, City of Cape Canaveral
It’s hard to believe that the holidays are already upon us. That means a lot of things in Cape Canaveral—slightly cooler weather, snowbirds, twinkle lights on palm trees and the annual Reindeer Run 5k. Now in its 24th year, this race supports the local chapter of the Brevard County Sheriff ’s Office Police Athletic League, supporting activities and enrichment opportunities for Cape Canaveral youth enrolled in the program. This year’s event will be on held on Saturday, December 14th at Cherie Down Park beginning at 8:00 a.m. The first 600 participants to register will receive moisture-wicking race shirts featuring all the wonderful sponsors that help make this event successful year after year. More than 20 local businesses have shown their support, with Beachwave and Parrish Medical as this year’s title sponsors. Medals and trophies will be awarded to the top three finishers in each age group as well as the top male and female for each age division including the masters and grand masters division. Just by registering for the race, you will be entered in a drawing to win many great prize giveaways such as restaurant gift cards, hotel stays and tickets to Universal Studios. A free kids fun run will start at 9:15 a.m. followed by a special visitor from the North Pole! This year’s event is part of the Space Coast Runners Race of the Year Series and the Holiday Beach Series. Those who participate in all three of the Holiday Beach Series races will receive a one of a kind medal designed by local artist Hassan Patterson. Register for this race or the whole series at: runsignup.com/Race/FL/CapeCanaveral/CapeCanaveralReindeerRun
