EDITOR’S LETTER
Oh, my goodness, where do I start? A lot has happened since our last issue. We all had to contend with an unwelcome guest in Hurricane Irma, and she brought with her plenty of inconveniences to all of us in one shape or another. We hope everyone is on their way back to “normal life”.
CONTACT INFO
One observation I have made is how our little beachside community rallied around each other and stepped up when it was needed most. It started at the top with our leaders and trickled down to all the residents. I have seen and heard of many cases of neighbor helping neighbor and stranger helping stranger, and it makes me proud to be a part of this community! We made every effort to compile the October issue in a timely manner. This issue would not have happened if it wasn’t for the support and help of everyone involved from story contributors to sponsors! Each and every one of them had their own personal problems to deal with but found the time to work with us to make this issue happen. THANK YOU! I would like to do a special email: “Thank You” to the HilDougbaker34@aol.com ton Cocoa Beach Traceepbaker@gmail.com Oceanfront for suppling us a lophone: cation with electricity, 321-759-6064 air conditioning, and internet to put this issue together. As we turn the page on this experience, let’s look onward and upward. I want to wish everyone a happy Fall and we will see you in November.

Words cannot express how proud we are to call Cocoa Beach home and to have all of you as neighbors. It is in times of adversity when we see the true nature of the human heart, and Hurricane Irma proved the hearts of the Cocoa Beach community truly beat as one.
written by: Cocoa Beach Resident Karen Bugler
I felt helpless hearing about all of Irma’s victims that had far worse situations than my husband and myself. The long, dark days without power and water gave me plenty of time to think. I listened to my husband curse as he tried to get the screen slider to stay attached to the magnet that was no longer working. He had tried everything. I suddenly knew what I could do to cheer up my wonderful condo neighbors who were weathering the storm with us. I began to type. I have never been someone that had business ideas. I don’t think that I would have made a very good salesperson. I am more of a Willie Loman. You know, a hacker who doesn’t see the signs all around that this profession just isn’t for him anymore.
seem mundane! The DAVE-A-1000! A device so simple, but so ingenious I fear sales will rocket past anything anyone could imagine. Apple, Microsoft, Oracle, Mary Kay, Facebook, watch out! The business world will be rocked. And this story, my friends, is how my bored husband took a zip tie and strapped it around the magnets to hold the door. Not much of an invention, not even much of a gadget. But reading the story to my neighbors, and hearing them laugh was the whole point. Irma was very destructive, but seeing my friends laugh until they cried turned out to be my way of providing my friends with a bit of humor.
Why does this even matter, well, I think that I may just be married to someone more akin to Larry Ellison or Ron Popeil or Dale Carnegie. Scratch the last, even I know that Carnegie would be a long stretch. Anyway, my husband Dave is a wonderful man but he has zero fix-it skills. Oh, he tries, bless his heart, but even with six or seven large toolboxes and countless related supplies hidden all throughout our home, he usually “calls the guy”. But not this time. No sirree Bob! You see, his calling appears to be born out of the concept that necessity is the mother of invention. And here is why I have to, at long last, give him kudos for accomplishing something that would impress even the famous salesman, Zieg Ziegler. We are, after all, in the throes of the aftermath of the super hurricane Irma here in Florida, so you may be thinking, “a new and faster way to get FP&L to our homes?” No, not even close. Ice that melts slowly and keeps things cold for weeks you say? No siree John (couldn’t use Bob again, after all this is creative writing)! What my husband invented is something that will save money, keep your home bug free and comes in two colors. Adorably, he calls it the Dave A 1000! Why the A or the 1000? Damned if I know, but doesn’t it make you WANT to pay $19.99 (plus shipping) even before you know what it is? If you have sliding screen doors leading to a lanai, patio, porch, piazza, veranda, portico or solarium, don’t you just wish that there was a way to ensure that the magnets holding your doors in place would never fail? Fail safe screen sliders! I know, I know, the concept is, well, it certainly makes the discovery of splitting atoms Cocoa Beach Explorer

The Ever Expanding Kelsey’s IT’S NOT JUST (FANTASTIC) PIZZA ANYMORE Expansion and renovation have been the name of the game for Kelsey’s in Cape Canaveral. The dining room, waiting room and takeout area have recently been modernized with an eclectic mix of nautical and Tuscan elements which blend seamlessly together. To accompany the beautifully redesigned interior, Kelsey’s has also completely transformed their menu. All your favorites are still available, and let’s face it, their pizzas are a tantalizing treat for the taste buds, but Kelsey’s is not just a pizza house any longer. The menu has been expanded to include a variety of seafood dishes to tempt your palate. Are you a Mahi lover? Then you want to put the Grilled Agave Mahi Mahi on your list of must haves. The Mahi is marinated and grilled in agave nectar then topped with cilantro and house-made mango relish and served with fresh vegetables. Is fresh Ahi Tuna your thing? The Ahi Tuna Tacos, served blackened and seared with a wasabi aioli, ginger slaw and soy glaze; or one of the delicious daily specials, such as the Ahi Tuna Flatbread, definitely need to find its way onto your dinner plate. To complement the new expanded menu, the bar selections have also been broadened. Kelsey’s now offers 24 different draft and craft beer selections as well as 30 bottled beer options, a full liquor bar and a wine selection to make any connoisseur smile. Speaking of smiling, happy hour, from 3pm until 6pm, offers a dollar off all drinks.
Pizza is, and always has been, a heavyweight on Kelsey’s menu, but even the pizza selections have been extended. The addition of the new Cuban Pizza, Kelsey’s version of the famous Cuban sandwich, has quickly become a favorite of locals, tourists and even NASA rocket scientists. Made with a mayonnaise and mustard sauce then topped with ham, turkey, pickles, mozzarella, and cheddar cheeses, this pizza is uniquely delicious. Kelsey’s owners, Tomas Trska and Richard Virgovic, shared how this unique pizza wasn’t an original concept of Kelsey’s but rather started as a requested dish from a couple visiting the restaurant. The couple explained what they wanted on the Cuban pizza, and Kelsey’s obliged. Tomas related how he later had the kitchen create another Cuban pizza for taste testing before they would add it to the menu. He stated, “I just didn’t know how good a pizza with a mayonnaise and mustard sauce would be. It was actually a very good combination of flavors.” Now, this uncommon combination has become a great seller for Kelsey’s and well worth a try the next time you stop by. Continuing the expansion theme is the expanded parking lot and home delivery area. Kelsey’s recently completed construction on a twenty-space parking lot addition, and their delivery area has expanded south to Minutemen Causeway. Stop in, grab a bite…or two…or three….you won’t be disappointed!

FROM THE MAYOR
MALIK’S MESSAGE C O C OA B E ACH U P DAT E Irma has come and gone but not without leaving her mark on us here in Cocoa Beach. We were very lucky compared to our neighbors in the Keys and the Caribbean islands who were less fortunate with loss of life and extensive property damage. We are Cocoa Beach Strong and Beach Pride was evident everywhere! I am truly humbled to represent such a fine community of such caring people. I am also incredibly impressed with the professionalism of our City Manager, Jim McKnight; Police Chief, Scott Rosenfeld; Fire Chief, Ryan Duckworth; all of our first responders and city staff; and our guest from FL Municipal Insurance Trust (insurance claims adjuster on hand to assess damages) who worked long hours to ensure essential city services were met. The new fire station worked as intended to house essential personnel and first responders and equipment to ensure the city kept going with over 30 of us bunked up in the station. The station serves as the local emergency operations center to coordinate nightly briefings with County, State and Federal assets to solve a myriad of challenges: no power, lack of potable water, sewer plant functions, fuel, public safety, logistics and communications with our residents. It was a Herculean effort done by ordinary people doing some very extraordinary things with dedication to our residents! Thank you to Kimberly Prosser w/ Brevard County EOC, Gov. Scott for getting us help from the National Guard and fuel deliveries, Mayor Henry Parrish and Cocoa City Manager John Titkanich for getting our water back on! This event brought out the best in our residents by helping each other and our guests. Thanks Daniel Colburn and Ed Martinez for helping me get my generator running, Dan Kope for the BBQ, John & Deborah Deleo for the usage of their pool (to flush toilets and cool off). Thank you to the following for feeding 54 National Guard troops deployed here in Cocoa Beach: Timothy B. Holt, Jeremy Graves, Craig Harriman, Papa Vito’s Italian Restaurant, Bruno’s Pizzeria and Sunrise Dinner. Also, thanks to Zarella’s in Cape Canaveral, Juice N Java, Heidelberg, Pizza Gallery, Florida Fresh, and Hilton for helping our first responders and city staff with food/ coffee/etc. Special thanks to Lynne Adams for doing our family’s dirty laundry (wow!) and residents for feeding the Chicago linemen who left their families to come help us (one of them even took the time to write me a note that I had to share on social media)! We will continue to face challenges and will continue learning from each one. I am proud to serve as your Mayor! This is why we live in Cocoa Beach, and we take care of each other! God Bless each of you! written by Mayor Ben Malik

Main Street…What it is…how to get involved. Q and A with Main Street Director Beth Javens What is Cocoa Beach Main Street?
Main Street began as a pilot program when preservation professionals in the 1970s realized they were losing downtowns and historic buildings to uncontrolled development. The program was designed to build economies around historic preservation and old buildings. There are several Main Street programs in Florida. Eau Gallie is another program that many people recognize. They are doing great as an arts district. All Main Street programs are non-profits and are funded differently.
Why should we care about Main Street in Cocoa Beach? After recent events in Houston and here in Florida, many people rallied around their communities to begin the rebuilding process. That is what Main Street is about. It’s an organic, community-driven, volunteerdriven labor of love for many communities who want to retain the sense of place that is unique to them. Cocoa Beach has some buildings from the 1940s (Cottage Row) intact. You saw the emotion when the Surf was torn down. Buildings and community mean some-

thing to people. Main Street speaks to both the preservation and the revitalization process. Cocoa Beach is mid-century and has its own unique feel and aesthetic and cultural and historical significance. What are some of the things Main Street does? We try to provide insight into the downtown as the “eyes and ears”. We can provide thoughtful leadership on issues like parking, wayfinding signage, pedestrian flow, small business loans, façade and beautification (murals, paint) and prof-

itable event promotion. Some of these are industry terms, but it’s basically the best ways to get people moving around in town, utilizing parking supply and demand, creating an environment that is attractive for residents and provides economic vitality for business with a balance that makes sense. Because we have a large tourism component here, it’s even more important that we can speak to those issues. We’ve partnered with the Police Department, aided in the reduction in service calls during Spring Break with the addition of the Beach Rangers, bringing
some of those issues to the attention of the City. Who is currently involved in Main Street? Business owners, residents and City representatives are all involved. We have had a lot of volunteers in our three years as a Main Street, and a lot of people in downtown to credit for helping us over the last couple of years to get us to this point. It’s important to have investment from a variety of sources and that includes financial support. You can support Main Street as an individual for $25.

We are a non-profit, and fundraising is a lot of what we do. Friday Fest-type of events are expensive to produce, and they are fundraisers for us. What are ways Cocoa Beach Residents and Businesses can get involved? Volunteers of all ages and vision are needed to help out at our office on Minutemen and can assist both at the office on a committee such as design, promotions or remotely. I have experience with linked learning and service learning, so I hope to expand those programs in the future. It is essential to bring a variety of perspectives to the table for constructive discussion. Get involved in our
Business Watch if you have a business in downtown and are concerned about safety, security and the like. If you like posting things going on in the City like meetings or civic activities or other social events, we need help with that too. We have a team of about 20 volunteers who jump in at any one time to assist with events and/or participate in City Commission Meetings and CRA Meetings (Community Redevelopment Agency). Residents and parttime residents are welcome to help out. Last year, a part-time resident volunteered to “tag” the downtown with red hearts for Valentine’s Day. This year we will be working with the City on our first downtown clean-up.

SALTY SWEET SURF CONTEST WOMEN’S PRO/AM | OCTOBER 14 & 15 hosted by Cocoa Beach Pier Known for its golden-brown sand and consistent surf, Cocoa Beach is a surfer girl’s dream. In 2014, Crystal Cooper, the organizer of The Salty Sweet Women’s Pro/Am Surf Contest, turned a dream into reality for women and girls around the country. The Salty Sweet Women’s Pro/Am, one of the largest women’s professional surf contests in the U.S., attracts both professional and amateur surfers to Cocoa Beach to compete for cash and prizes. With a cash prize of $5,000, split equally between the professional longboard and shortboard finishers, and 13 different amateur divisions, the Salty Sweet Pro/Am draws nearly 200 female surfers from around the country. The event earned Eastern Surf Magazine’s “Best New Contest” award in 2014 and has shown consistent growth since then. Ms. Crystal Cooper, Event Organizer Cooper stated, “We are very proud to add a photo credit: Duce Smith new division this year: The Exceptional Surfers’ Exhibition. This division is for girls who have various disabilities but are still making their way to the ocean and fighting through their challenges to enjoy surfing.”
NEW THIS YEAR
Exceptional Surfers’ Exhibition
This year is sure to be even larger as the event, for the first time, is supported by Florida’s Space Coast Office of Tourism through its Sports Marketing Program. The contest spectators are a mixture of locals and tourists - some are the competitors’ supporters and others are people on vacation who simply enjoy the entertainment of the event. Competitions begin on Saturday, October 14 at 8 a.m., and will run through Sunday afternoon. The awards ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. on Sunday, October 15th at Keith’s Oyster Bar. Spectators are welcome all weekend! Top Photo: Reigning professional longboard champ Jazmine Dean photo credit: Paul Cooper
