EDITOR’S LETTER
I was reading an article about Christmas decorations and the affects it has on us. Psychology experts say putting up your Christmas trees and decorations earlier can make you feel happier since the holidays usually remind us of our less-stressful childhoods. Not sure if that is it, or if it just reminds us of family and friends. Whatever it is, it does seem to make us feel happier. (Except when you are trying to untangle the old strands of Christmas lights.) Keep this in mind as we are working our way through November. Maybe consider starting a little earlier this year. Ok, on to this month’s issue. We are spotlighting a couple local businesses. First, we talked with Son on the Beach to find out what is new with them besides their new location. Then, guest writer Crystal Marin visited with Sun Harbor Nursery. Dave Grover, the owner, tells us all about his plumerias.
CONTACT INFO
It’s November, so you know what that means…. It means, lots of events and fun stuff to do. Here are a few events to mark on your calendar. Satellite Beach Annual Founder’s Day & Marketplace, School Holiday Skate Dayz, Hooked Kids on Gardening, and the Cocoa Beach Art Festival. Of course, we have our monthly features like the Mayor’s letter, a word from Satellite High School’s principal, local live music, and our Community Corner section. Remember—while it won’t take away your financial concerns or make your life less chaotic, email: those experts say your info@explorermultimedia.com Christmas tree can serve phone: as a form of therapy. So, 321-759-6064 go ahead and put up that tree and deck the halls a little early this season. I’m going to try and talk Tracee into getting our trees up early this year. Wish me luck.
While you’re at it, keep your decorations up well into the new year if you want to. You aren’t crazy. You might actually be mentally better off than the rest of us!

SUN ON THE BEACH
NEW LOCATION, NEW HOURS, NEW MENU SPECIALS WRITTEN BY: Doug Baker, Editor of Satellite Beach Explorer
Good food, good company, and good vibes have been what Sun on the Beach has been all about since they opened in 2004. They have spent the last fifteen years sharing their family’s love of fresh, Southern fare alongside tasty cocktails with locals and tourists alike. Locals know if you want a great breakfast or lunch this is the place to go. This is Florida, so fresh-squeezed orange juice is the perfect complement to breakfast, and at Sun on the Beach all the juices are fresh squeezed on site which means those mimosas taste extra special. On July 4th of this year, they opened at their new stand-alone location at 1390 Highway A1A in Satellite Beach. Same great food and drinks for breakfast and lunch but a fresh, new location. After talking with them, I soon found out this new location isn’t the only new idea they had in mind. When most businesses move, they are content with riding the wave of a new location. Customers are curious about the new venue, so there is a bump in visitors just from your new digs. Just riding that new location wave is not Sun on the Beach’s plan— they have multiple changes in store.
First off, they recruited Jason Sipes to manage the restaurant. Jason brings 20 years of restaurant and bar experience with him. Next, starting November 7th, Sun on the Beach will begin opening for dinner on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings. Each night will feature a tasty dinner special. Thursday nights will feature Prime Rib, Friday nights will feature Grouper Fish and Chips, and Saturday night’s feature will be Apple Cinnamon Stuffed Pork Chops. Plus, you can order off the regular menu which includes breakfast any time. Sun on the Beach will be one of the only places in Satellite Beach that you can get a late-night breakfast. Lastly, the drink and food menus will soon be getting some fresh new options. Stay tuned for those additions. Sun on the Beach’s motto is no matter the occasion, they will be there to welcome you in with a smile and treat you to a homecooked meal along with all the beach vibes you can handle. As a special thank you to our readers, Sun on the Beach has allowed us to include the coupon below for you to put their home cooking and hospitality to the test. So, drop in and give the new location a try.

For example, veterans have demonstrated perseverance. And as an investor, you’ll need to persevere in the face of volatile markets and shortterm losses.
Finally, veterans obviously have a sense of duty. And when you invest to preserve your financial independence, you’re showing your own sense of duty by helping relieve your grown children of the possible need to help support you in your later years.
Veterans also know that their individual duties are part of a much larger landscape – namely, the security of their country. As an investor, you

FROM THE DESK OF PRINCIPAL PRUETT
Satellite High School continues to have a successful first semester. With the first nine weeks of the year behind us, the Scorps are now in the middle of major academic projects, athletic competitions, and clubs. Satellite’s internationally recognized science research program is in full swing. With nearly 60 students involved in science research once again this year, SHS students look to continue their success at county, state, national, and international science fairs this year. The Satellite Marching Scorps have put the final touches on their show, “The Great Gatsby” for their upcoming Music Performance Assessment and their final two halftime performances of the year. If you haven’t had a chance to come watch their show, you have one more opportunity on November 8th. The Scorpion fall athletic teams have already brought home district championships and district runner-up awards with more to come later this month. The SHS varsity football program is home twice in November for their final two games of the season, November 1st, which will include our homecoming festivities and on November 8th for the Heroes Bowl. Members of our first responders and military communities will be recognized during our Heroes Bowl. Please come out and enjoy the game and show your support for these great men and women! IS AROUND THE CORNER AT SUN HARBOR NURSERY CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Crystal Marin, Satellite Beach Resident PHOTOS PROVIDED BY: Crystal Marin and Linda Grover
Plumerias are one of the most beautiful and recognized flower, especially in Satellite beach area where they bloom and grow so abundantly and beautifully. Just walk down one of any of our streets and you will see blooms in pink, white, red, yellow and a mixture of colors on these perennial plants also known as frangipani. A particular favorite of Dave Grover, the owner of Sun Harbor Nursery on Eau Gallie, is the Singapore plumeria. He has described its fragranced bloom as “the aroma of paradise.” Dave Grover started Sun Harbor Nursery on Eau Gallie over 40 years ago. His career began as a real estate broker, but decided his love for plumerias, landscaping, fruit trees, and surfing in the tropics was his true calling. When he visited Hawaii in 1970’s on a surfing trip, he said he had the most vivid experience walking down a street in Kauai. “The air was blanketed with a most beautiful fragrance. At this point, I realized that paradise did exist on the earth and this was what the aroma of paradise was.” His nursery sells a variety of tropical plants, but the special garden in the back is all plumerias that he has cultivated himself. He brought back seeds from Wakiki and cross pollinated them here with other plumerias. His very first cultivation was when he planted many different colored plumerias all very close to each other to cross pollinate. It worked! The seeds were planted and
the results were spectacular! He now has many unique colored varieties growing that “exist nowhere else in the universe.” Grover named these colorful varieties names like “fireworks,” “rockstar” and “sunrise.” He said this is his legacy to his family and community. Now a days his surfing days may be on hold, but he is very active in his nursery educating people about his tropical plants. “I love flowers and the joy it brings to people.” He speaks locally to community centers to educate the public on tropical gardens and especially about his beloved frangipani, or plumerias. He said “The length of my life should determine how far we go with the Paradise Garden. I do not plan on retiring as this is my retirement.” The nursery is currently managed by his son, Chris Grover, who is a graduate of the Colorado State horticultural program.
