EDITOR’S LETTER

CONTENTS October 2019

Happy fall y’all! I’m glad September is over; it has been one active month in the tropics with all these storms. It seems like they are just forming one right after another. Fingers crossed it will slow down in October! We got very lucky with Dorian, but it is sad to see what happened to our neighbors in the Bahamas. It is heartwarming to see the relief efforts all around town. It makes me thankful we were spared any major effects and proud to be in a community that is so giving. This month’s issue is brimming with content. Jim Warthen did a great Fall movie preview for us, so you can plan out what movies you want to catch. Next, find out everything going on at the Satellite Beach Library this month. Also, make sure to read what the Mayor and the Principal of Satellite High School are updating us on this month. Lastly, the Satellite Beach Recreation Department catches us up on what is happening around town. Thanks to all our advertisers! Without them we couldn’t bring this to you every month. Make sure to let them know you see them in the Satellite Beach Explorer! If you have an event coming up, have live music, or would like to advertise in the Satellite Beach Explorer, please reach out to me. My contact is info@explorermultimedia.com or call me at 321-759-6064.

Fall Movie Preview 2019 CONTRIBUTING WRITER: James Warthen

Pumpkin Spice is in the air, Space Coast readers!! Even though it’s been hitting 90 degrees with humidity percentages nearly as high, we’re technically heading into fall! And as any fan of the silver screen knows, this means we’re getting into the 2019 holiday movie season! Following today’s trend, we’ll be following the seemingly never-ending stream of remakes, adaptations, and sequels, with a tiny smattering of new(ish) material: Joker (Oct 4th) The most surprising thing about this movie season is the lack of Super-Hero movies. In fact, the only comic book-based movie on this list is one that’s based not on a hero, but on one of the most iconic comic villains of all time. This film tells the story of just how a normal man might be able to turn into something as abnormal as the Joker. While this version of the Joker won’t connect to the broader DC and Justice League movies that are being made, it certainly draws on the same insanity and mania that makes the traditional Joker who he is. This movie may or may not turn out to be a great Joker-movie, but my prediction is that it may just turn out to be a great movie-movie. Gemini Man (Oct 11) This film is one of the only “original” movies in the pile. I use the term “original” loosely because this flick is almost a re-make of itself before it’s even released. Various stars have been attached over almost 20 years, and it’s Will Smith who finally gets to bring us the story of an aging assassin who is very good at what he does, and is now being hunted by a younger, cloned version of himself. Even when the story or script isn’t the best, Will Smith can usually be relied upon to bring the A-game. So, let’s hope that when he’s working with something that’s been refined over almost two decades, we might get something really fun, and maybe even thought provoking. I’d definitely make room on the schedule for this one. 6

The Addams Family (Oct 11) If you’re a red-blooded American, I don’t need to explain to you what this film is. Another chapter in the story of our favorite creepy family, this time the story is animated. It features a star-studded voice cast, with talent like Charlize Theron, and takes the Addams Family to New Jersey… which sounds just depressing enough to fit for the Addams. This one is a good, kid-friendly flick, so keep it in the back pocket for a rainy Sunday when the whole family needs a good activity. Jojo Rabbit (Oct 18) As usual, along with the blockbusters and wellknown properties, I try to bring at least one lesserknown film to light for you to check out. This fall, my selection is Jojo Rabbit. This is a dark comedy written and directed by Taika Wititi, the man who brought you Thor: Ragnarok (the best of the Thor movies). The story follows a Hitler youth during WWII who realizes his mother is hiding a Jewish person in her attic. Comedy writers often use laughter to stand up to tragic events, and if anyone can bring laughter to this story, it’s Waititi. The film is rated R, and definitely filled with adult language and situations, so this is a movie best suited for late-night hang outs or date nights, but be sure to give it a chance. It’s one of the only originals in the lineup, and we should probably be thankful for any of these when we get them. Terminator: Dark Fate (Nov 1) Another franchise that needs no introduction, this installment of the Terminator franchise marks the return of not only Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator, but also Linda Hamilton and Edward Furlong to their roles from Terminator 2. This film is the first one in almost three decades that has the series creator, James Cameron, involved. And since it also has David S. Goyer as screenwriter (Interstellar, Inception), it seems like everything is lining up just right for a fantastic return to the franchise that has been making the promise for generations that “I’ll be back”.

“SATELLITE BEACH CIVIC CENTER SOON TO KICK OFF RENOVATIONS A MESSAGE FROM SATELLITE BEACH MAYOR FRANK CATINO

SATELLITE BEACH — Satellite Beach is launching the renovation of its Civic Center located on Cassia Blvd. When the project is complete, the 55-year-old Civic Center will reopen as a multifunctional space that will continue to provide a place for our many clubs, volunteers, organizations and activities and can also accommodate weddings, parties, reunions – just about anything to celebrate! I am looking forward to updating our aging Civic Center that will include a beautiful entryway and complete remodel of the facility with new flooring, decorative architectural ceiling tiles, a state-of-the-art kitchen, new appliances, complete drywall and coastal color paints, a new audio/video system, a wedding room for the bridal parties, and of course updates to the plumbing and electrical and new LED lighting. Our Satellite Beach community will have a local place to hold their venues with a facility they can be proud of. The architectural design is 90% complete and the project is slated to go out to bid by the beginning of October. With no hiccups (hurricanes) or other setbacks

the project should be ready for construction beginning of February. On to other City Hall business‌we are excited to launch our newly formed Youth Council. Councilwoman Jodi Rozycki will be assisting our Recreation Director Cassie Warthen with the program. Students will have the chance to learn about the multiple tiers of government with a hands-on experience at City Hall. There will be opportunities for students to learn about their municipal/county government, participate in the Florida League of Cities Annual Youth Summit and work on community projects that could lead to potential partnerships with the School Board, non-profits and local businesses. We hope this program will encourage them to learn more about civic engagement and responsibility and get involved throughout the community. I am always available by phone or get together if you have any questions or want to know more about our City updates. Mayor Frank Catino 321-223-7700 satelli te b each e x plorer

SATELLITE HIGH SCHOOL

Home of the Scorpions

It’s hard to believe we are nearing the end of the first nine weeks already. Each week we have something exciting taking place on our campus for our students. Former Satellite student and alumni, class of 1999, Ben Bretzman, came back to visit teachers and to speak to our nationally recognized automotive technology program. Ben is currently the race engineer for the 2019 Indianapolis 500 champion #22 car driven by Simon Pagenaud. It’s always great to see former Scorpions back on campus sharing all their successes with us.

through the LifeStraw Safe Water Fund. You can contribute by going to https://www.crowdrise.com/o/en/campaign/hurricane-dorian-relief Throughout this semester, Satellite students will have the opportunity to hear from several state colleges and universities. Many of our state colleges and universities are scheduled to speak on the process in which students can apply, expectations, and answer questions about the admissions process. We appreciate these schools coming here to help our students and their families get familiar with their school and admission requirements. If you haven’t had a chance to come watch our students perform or compete, I would encourage you do so. Whether it’s a football game, marching band, cheer, JROTC competitions, golf, volleyball, swimming, cross country, or bowling, you will certainly have a great time and be proud of the work our students and their coaches are doing to represent our great community. You can access all of our sports schedules from our school webpage https://www.brevardschools.org/Page/139 and follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/ScorpsAthletics
