Young Entrepreneur is a “Cut” Above WRITTEN BY: Doug Baker, Editor, Satellite Beach Explorer
What were you doing when you were 17 years old? Most of us were busy just being a typical teenager— going out and hanging with friends, playing video games or something along those lines. We didn’t even dream about owning our own business; well, maybe we dreamed about it, but those dreams were for the future not for the present. Corey Bollinger, however, isn’t your typical teenager. He isn’t just dreaming about the future. At the ripe young age of 17, he is living reality as a business owner. Yes, you read it correctly, a 17-year-old business owner. For the past three years, Corey has spent his time cutting grass and building a client base around the beachside communities. All of this while keeping up with his homeschool studies (he is currently a senior). Corey now owns his own lawn company, Corey’s Lawn Service, which provides monthly complete lawn maintenance to over fifty clients. 6
If you ask Corey what his favorite thing to do is (besides boating and skateboarding), he would answer “making money cutting grass.” Much of the money he has earned over the past few years he has turned around and reinvested into his company by purchasing state-of-the-art lawn equipment, a new truck and an enclosed trailer for all his lawn equipment. Corey also makes sure to maintain a fully licensed and insured business. Corey is looking to grow his business to around eighty clients. He feels this is the sweet spot for the number of clients he can comfortably handle on his own and still provide those clients with top notch service. He chooses to do all the work himself and doesn’t farm it out or hire other people. This way he knows the work is done to his standards. I asked Corey how he got into the business, and he replied, “I’ve learned to love the business through my Dad’s lawn mower shop. Being
satelli te b each e x plorer
raised around lawn mowers, I have come to realize that quality equipment makes a huge difference. Plus, Dad taught me how to take good care of that equipment!” He finished by telling me, “I love working outdoors. It’s a bonus that I get to work for myself and make a comfortable income.” To say the least, it’s impressive seeing such a young man with such fierce ambition. Corey is a young man striving to reach his goals and showing how hard work and perseverance make dreams a reality. The sky is the limit for this young entrepreneur! If you need a lawn service, give Corey a call at 321-697-9602.

The Satellite Beach City Council on Wednesday, July 17th unanimously approved a resolution phasing out the use of single-use plastic items and expanded polystyrene (Styrofoam) products by Satellite Beach city staff within the next six months for operational use. The resolution includes establishing a Green Team to guide city employees in becoming more sustainable in each department and municipal facilities working towards a cleaner and safer environment. “Phasing the use of single-use plastics and Styrofoam products is a great first step, said Mayor Frank Catino. “The City is striving to be the rolemodel for our residents to make a change in their use of single-use plastic and Styrofoam. Recent studies have shown that plastics and Styrofoam have a detrimental and long-lasting effect on the health of the environment. As plastics photo degrade and become micro plastics, it is estimated that the average person eats 70,000 microplastics each year. As of today, there are over 127 countries who have banned plastic bags, 14 countries who have banned single-use plastics and 25 U.S. states have enacted a plastics ban in one form or another with Palm Beach, Florida, being the first to ban plastic bags and polystyrene containers, and Orlando banning single-use plastic and polystyrene on city property.
Corinna Daninger Buyer and Listing Specialist Call Today for a Free Consultation
To coordinate the implementation of the resolution, the city will establish the Satellite Beach Green Team. Representatives from across city departments will develop sustainable solutions to reduce each department’s plastic and Styrofoam use and educate their peers in the practices of sustainable best practices in and around their offices. The goal of the Green Team is to create monthly meeting topics including clean energy, recycling, composting and to lead the path to becoming a zero-waste city. City staff will be given an outline created by the City’s Green Team to assist employees in phasing out the use of single-use plastic items and Styrofoam products. The City Council unanimously determined that it is in the best interest of the public health, safety, and welfare of its residents and employees, to work towards the city’s long-term goal of phasing out the use of singleuse plastic and expanded polystyrene (Styrofoam) products. “Enhancing the quality of our Indian River Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean waters is important to the quality of life enjoyed by Satellite Beach residents, businesses, and visitors, said City Manager Courtney Barker. satelli te b each e x plorer

The main topic of last night’s City Council meeting was looking towards the future of our great City and discussing the findings of a report prepared for and presented to the City by Dr. Jason M. Evans, Interim Executive Director of the Institute for Water and Environmental Resilience, Stetson University, regarding what effects hurricanes, climate change, rising sea levels and rising Indian River Lagoon levels have on our community. One of the important findings of the report discussed water levels within the Indian River Lagoon. The Tidewater Inflow Assessment shows the mean water level of the Indian River Lagoon has risen five inches since 1992. Though that doesn’t seem overly drastic, an increase in mean water levels even that small, can affect the floodplain, stormwater runoff and subsequently, stormwater management. Erin L. Deady, Esq., AICP, LEED and President of Erin L. Deady, P.A. and Thomas Ruppert, Esq., Florida Sea Grant Coastal Planning Specialist prepared a GIS mapping of the city of Satellite Beach to demonstrate the location of the areas most effected by the rise in lagoon levels. We are using this data to update and develop our resiliency plan and to help us forecast where capital improvement revenues should be allocated in the future. This information will also help us make certain the City’s stormwater infrastructure is designed for longevity. The City can also utilize the report’s findings to establish better building practices for the future. This new GIS map has been submitted to FEMA requesting an amendment to the official FEMA Flood Map. If you are interested, the Tidewater Inflow Assessment report is available at City Hall for you to review as well as the two power points presented at our Council meeting. Thank you for your support and allowing me to serve as your Mayor. Please feel free to contact me with any suggestions at fcatino@satellitebeach.org, or my cell is 321- 223-7700. SATELLITE HIGH SCHOOL
Home of the Scorpions
Satellite High School is off to a fantastic start for the 2019-2020 school year. After receiving another “A” grade from the Florida Department of Education for the 2018-2019 school year, the staff has come in ready to do great things for our students again this year. Enrollment is up considerably from last year with about 100 more students on campus. From our first ever Saturday registration to our seniors painting their parking spaces, through to the first few weeks of school, the buzz and excitement of being a Satellite Scorpion has certainly picked up where we left off at the end of last year.
I want to thank our many community partners, leaders, and businesses who continually support our great school each year. Your time and generosity certainly plays a key role in the success of our students and staff. This year we are developing a Satellite High Parent, Teacher, Alumni Organization, PTAO. The PTAO will be organized and run by SHS parents and alumni. The goal of this new organization is to provide for our students, staff and school, whether it is in the form of a financial donation, volunteering, in kind donations, etc., all in the name of continuing to build even stronger ties with our great community. If you or someone you know may be interested, please contact me at school, and I will get you in touch with the PTAO president as soon as they are an official organization. Believe it or not, our fall sports kicked off right away this school year. Come out and see these incredibly talented and dedicated Scorpions in action. The SHS homecoming game will be played on September 6th at 7:00pm at the Scorpion Stadium. We’d love having our community attend all of our events, including homecoming. Check the school website, https://www.brevardschools.org/SatelliteHS for athletic and event schedules throughout the school year. Sting ‘Em Scorps!!!
