EDITOR’S LETTER
Cocoa Beach Explorer is a monthly publication mailed to every address in the Cocoa Beach (32931) zip code. Our goal: to keep the citizens of Cocoa Beach up-to-date about the affairs in our delightful little beachside town ranging from large-scale social events to high school games & performances. August 2017 was our inaugural issue.
CONTACT INFO
The concept for Cocoa Beach Explorer was born over a year ago while sitting on the patio with a glass of wine in hand watching the sun set over the Banana River. My husband and I were discussing the happenings at the previous evening’s monthly Danube River Book Club meeting (cheers to a group of exceptional Cocoa Beach ladies). While I was talking to one of the ladies at book club, the topic rolled around to my son’s recent orchestra performance at Cocoa Beach High School. She was disappointed to find out the performance had been open to the public, but the public, unless you had a child in orchestra, was completely unaware of the performance. Her comment to me, “I wish I would have known. I would love to have gone.” was the catalyst for email: the concept of the Dougbaker34@aol.com Cocoa Beach Traceepbaker@gmail.com Explorer.

OPEN Mon. - Fri. 9am - 7pm Sat. - Sun. 9am - 5pm
Welcome, to the only grocery and deli market in downtown Cocoa Beach. With Publix closing this month, it’s the perfect time to stop in. Owner, Kenne Wells, was kind enough to show us around this local gem. Looking for a quick lunch? Options include homemade soups, made to order sandwiches and an extraordinary salad bar. How about a homecooked meal without the “home” cooking? Pick up one of Kenne’s Kitchen “Grab-n-Go” meals. The meals are prepared fresh daily using old family recipes. Beef Stroganoff or Pork Chops with Mushroom Gravy sounds like a
dinnertime winner! The week’s meal menu is posted on their Facebook page (facebook.com/coastalproduce) every Monday. Friends coming over for dinner? Then you need to check out the fresh meat market: beautiful steaks, ribs, ground beef, sausage, and bacon. Don’t forget the cold beer and wine to go with that dinner! They have a great selection from which to choose. How about everyone’s favorite, dessert? From Kenne’s Key Lime Pie to cinnamon rolls, banana pudding and cookies, they’ve got you covered. You must try the No No cookies (no flour, no butter, no oil, no sugar). There is always something delicious to satisfy your sweet tooth.

A COCOA BEACH ICON LEAVES A LASTING LEGACY
For as long as many of us can remember The Surf, as it is lovingly known by locals, has tenaciously stood at the southwest corner of Minutemen Causeway and A1A. Shortly after the demolition, we sat down with Rhett Fischer to reminisce about the nearly sixty years of memories he and his family cling to and to discuss the lasting legacy of Bernard’s Surf.
When Bernard Fischer opened the doors to Bernard’s Surf in October 1948, did he realize the decades of memories and life-lessons he was creating for not only his family but for an entire town? What started out as a liquor store grew quickly to include a fine-dining restaurant, cocktail lounge and private dining rooms. Within those walls, Bernard created an atmosphere and a culture that would become his legacy: treat everyone like family. In 1965 Bernard died unexpectedly and the restaurant was passed to Fischer’s nephew, Rusty Fischer. Rusty was a 22-year-old college student at Florida State University when he began managing the then popular hangout. With the space race in full swing, Fischer and his righthand-man of 33 years, general manager Charlie
10
Cocoa Beach Explorer
Ragland, played host to many celebrities, astronauts, newsmen and the occasional movie producer at The Surf. Fischer even authorized Sidney Sheldon to use the restaurant’s name in the “I Dream of Jeannie” television series.
“There’s just nothing like it anymore.” - Rhett Fischer Rusty’s sons, Rusty Jr. and Rhett, both grew up with The Surf as a backdrop to their childhood. Rhett pointed out one of his fondest memories being hurricanes. Not that he enjoyed the storms per se, but the feeling of community and neighborly caring. Rhett fondly remembers getting to sleep in the booths while the Fischer family, their dogs, and sometimes a few friends would hunker down at the restaurant. Since they were close to the fire station, it was a pretty good bet the restaurant would maintain power, so the Fischers would keep the firemen fed and in return the firemen kept a check on them.
Photos courtesy of the Fischer family
Rhett will humbly say he doesn’t consider himself a great restaurateur (though we tend to disagree), but he is quick to boast about the enduring lesson he took from his years working with his dad at The Surf: treat everyone like family. The Fischer family sold The Surf in 2006. To the dismay of Cocoa Beach residents, and visitors alike, the new owners unexpectedly closed the doors in 2010 never to reopen. The demolition in early August of the stalwart landmark was a poignant reminder of the passing of time. All good things must come to an end; however, the memories and lessons learned will go forward and the legacy of treat everyone like family will endure long after the final piece of rubble is removed.
“We treat our employees and customers like family. It’s a family atmosphere that we pride ourselves on. My Dad taught me that, and he learned it at The Surf.” Bernard’s legacy lives on through Rusty, Rhett and Rusty Jr., at Rusty’s Seafood and Oyster Bar in Port Canaveral.

MALIK’S
MESSAGE
FROM THE MAYOR
C O C OA B E ACH U P DAT E
A new school year begins and it is a bittersweet reminder of how fast our children grow up as my wife and I watch our son enter his last year in Cocoa Beach High School. It seems just yesterday we watched him playing little league with his friends he made at Roosevelt Elementary (most of which are also entering their last year as seniors at Cocoa Beach High School). These friendships will very well last a lifetime and a reflection of the benefit of being a small town community that we all cherish! The city of Cocoa Beach is taking the lead on a large scale project to improve Cocoa Beach High School soccer/baseball fields, crew/ sailing/SUP facilities, marine research and necropsy labs, fitness trails working with a multitude of agencies/companies to assist in supporting including but not limited to Space Coast Tourism Development Council, Brevard County school board, Cocoa Beach High School staff, Eastern Florida State College, Florida Tech, Sea World, Brevard Zoo, Florida Inland Navigation District, etc. The key to getting this project off the ground is obviously the funding mechanism for such an ambitious project with the Space Coast Tourism Development Council leading the way with initial funding for a complete renovation of the soccer/baseball fields at Cocoa Beach High School. Working with the Brevard County school board and Cocoa Beach High School staff to allow travel collegiate/high school teams to access these facilities will bring visitors and parents to visit our region and boost our local economy! The win for the residents and students of Cocoa Beach is having brand new facilities for them to enjoy without having to pay for the new facilities! In addition combining the new soccer/baseball fields, making use of the existing waterfront with addition of crew/sail/SUP facilities will also encourage travel crew teams to visit and offer our students new sports/scholarship opportunities as well. The plans also call for a waterfront hiking trail along the Banana River for all residents to enjoy, building a marine research and necropsy laboratory for students to engage in hands on learning experiences. It is one thing to learn from a science book; it is a whole different experience with kinesthetic learning (hands on learning) which has proven to be way more impactful for students. Cocoa Beach hotel visitors generate a significant amount of our region’s local bed tax and it is nice to see it finally being re-invested

Full Moon Paddle Out with Swell Life Magazine
Written By: Zack Fleischer photos by: David Pritzker
The bright glow of the full moon was almost as luminescent as the neon glow sticks that filled the ink stained ocean, as over 60 surfers paddled out for the 2nd annual Swell Life Magazine Full Moon Paddle Out.
Cover Up
The event was hosted on the south side of The Cocoa Beach Pier on Monday, August 7th from 9 p.m. through midnight. Watermen and women traveled from all over the state, just to be a part of this occasion. “The event was a lot busier than I expected,” said Cocoa Beach resident Aaron Conti “it was pretty epic.”

Ron Jon Team Rider Logan Hayes
Swell Life Magazine CEO Gina Onori explained her excitement of the paddle out and what it means to her.
“I’ve always loved night surfing,” said Onori. “The energy of the full moon combined with the exhilaration of uncharted waters is both thrilling and peaceful. What’s more important is that our water community can come together and have genuine fun, that’s what the swell life is all about.” Local Terry Perez stood out of the crowd as he surfed on a short board installed with bright green L.E.D. lights. Meanwhile, some dare devils preferred to fly under the radar using only the moonlight to catch their next wave. However, one thing these surfers all had in common was their love for their ocean. And as famous surfer Duke Kahanamoku once said, “the best surfer is the one having the most fun!”

Information in this article provided by Brevard County Emergency Management and the City of Cocoa Beach.
Will the causeways close? Causeways do not close prior to a storm. Residents are provided every opportunity to evacuate. • It is unsafe to cross causeways and high winds. After the storm, causeways will close until inspected for safety by the Florida Department of Transportation. • Please be patient as it takes time for inspectors to assess all seven causeways. For updates before/during/after a storm, follow “Brevard County Emergency Management” on Facebook or @BrevardEOC on Twitter, or text FOLLOWBREVARDEOC to 40404.
More planning now means less stress later, when incidents happen. Make a plan for your family and property. • Where will you go, how will you get in touch with each other, and where will you reunite afterwards. • Update your Homeowner’s or Renter’s insurance policy for adequate coverage. • Purchase flood insurance. • Make sure you have at least a 3-day supply of food, water and needed supplies.
Do I need to evacuate? Brevard County’s mandatory evacuation areas include the Barrier Islands, mobile and manufactured homes, and low-lying areas. Homes near US1 maybe in a storm surge or evacuation zone. Plug in your address at http://www.brevardfl.gov/EmergencyManagement/Haveaplan/evacuation and determine whether you live in an evacuation zone. Deciding to stay when told to evacuate could mean a delay in emergency services and difficulty reaching you. • Large, top-heavy vehicles like ambulances and fire engines will not cross causeways when winds are too high for their safety. • Washed-out roadways, downed trees and other debris may make your home inaccessible or cause a delay in response. Go tens of miles, not hundreds of miles, to shelter from the storm. It is not necessary to leave the county; save gas, time, money and aggravation by staying in a sturdy structure outside of evacuation zones. Evacuations are announced with enough time for you to prepare your home, pack your car, and drive to a place of safety before tropical-storm force winds arrive. Cocoa Beach Explorer

Do you wash your car at home? Washing your car at home can introduce soap, oil and grime into our Lagoon. It’s good to get dirt and salt off our cars so they look good and last long, but improper car washing directly damages our lagoon and waterways. NEVER allow your carwash water to run into the road - all City roadways have storm drains that lead directly to the Lagoon. Even if it dries up in the curb - the next rain will take the soapy dirt residue out to the Lagoon. It’s “better” to wash your car in the grass so the soil can sop up the mess but don’t forget that the groundwater is not far under your feet. Best to bring your car to a commercial car wash that cleans, filters and recycles its water and then discharges it to the City’s sanitary sewer system for treatment.
