The 2022 season opened in Doha, Qatar and then travelled to 15 further destinations across three continents, culminating in the season Finals where this year’s season champion will be crowned.
Show jumping’s top riders team up with their best horses for individual honours in a series of spectacular competitions on the tour, with the LGCT Grand Prix as one of the highlights of each event. To help you keep track of this thrilling series of highoctane jumping, here is a brief guide to the format
As well as the overall ranking battle, athletes will be competing for a place in the highly coveted GC Prague Playoffs, the ultimate showdown for the world’s best, scheduled this year for November at the O2 Arena in the Czech capital city. Here, winners of each LGCT Grand Prix will be invited to compete in the Longines Global Champions Tour Super Grand Prix, the ultimate head-tohead battle of the season’s best.
Explained longines global champions tour
The 2022 Longines Global Champions Tour kicked off in March with the world’s very best riders competing for an unprecedented amount of prize money across LGCT and GCL, and the highly prestigious Championship title.
This is the ultimate showdown in show jumping. Each winner (or next highest ranked athlete if more than one event is won), will qualify for a place in this special class, held at the GC Prague Playoffs. This will see the best horses and riders across the season return to face off for the ultimate goal of taking the title of LGCT Super Grand Prix Champion.
Horses and riders compete in any of the CSI5* supporting classes at each show. This allows horses to acclimatise to each different venue, which ranges from grass to sand surfaces, with different sized arenas and a range of environments, as well as giving riders the chance to win some serious prize money.
Points are allocated to each of the 35 riders according to their finishing place in each event’s LGCT Grand Prix. Over the season, each rider’s top eight scores count towards the overall cham pionship ranking and a share of the bonus prize money, which will be awarded at the season Finals.

The world’s top riders may take part in any of the 15 LGCT events, earning points and competing for a prize pot of over €300,000 in each of the LGCT Grand Prix.

The top 35 riders according to their penalties and time qualify from the previous competition, which also doubles as a second GCL leg, held earlier on the Saturday at each event. Jumping in reverse order of merit from the qualifier, horses and riders begin by jumping over a 1.55m/1.60m course of fences. Any combi nation that completes on a zero score, or tie on penalties if no combination remains clear, goes through to a jump-off against the clock, held over a shortened course, to decide top honours.

The concept is the first top level competition in the sport’s history that allows riders from different nations to compete on the same team, providing a breathtaking spectacle of fierce rivalry and immense team spirit in a modern and dynamic format.

The GCL classes take place over two days at each of the global legs of the circuit, running alongside the Longines Global Champions Tour throughout the season. The climax of the year will be the GC Prague Playoffs, as teams battle through the quarter-final, semi-final and final stages of the knockout GCL Super Cup.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
WHAT HAPPENS IN THE TRANSFER WINDOW?
Teams can change horses and/or riders between the two GCL classes as well as fielding different squads for each of the global legs in the series. Strategy and inter-team strengths will be crucial as different riders and horses are fielded for particular circums tances. Teams will be able to earn points at every single event, all contributing to their place in the season long Championship ranking, as well as tussle for a top place in the all-important GCL Super Cup at the GC Prague Playoffs.

This stand alone event in November will be the ultimate face-off for the GCL teams. Here teams will go head-to-head in the GCL Super Cup in a three-day high stakes knockout competition.
The transfer windows are at critical points in the season as teams re-evaluate to gain maximum advantage on the road to the GC Prague Playoffs.
The second part of the GCL competition also doubles as a qualifier for the LGCT Grand Prix. It will be a CSI5* 1.55/1.60m class. This takes place on Saturdays at every event before the LGCT Grand Prix. Individual riders, not riding for teams, will be the first to start in this class to try to qualify for the LGCT Grand Prix. Then the GCL teams will take centre stage, carrying through their combined faults from the first class. The results of the GCL riders will count towards their overall team score, but now their performance will also deter mine whether they qualify for the LGCT Grand Prix as individuals.
HOW DOES THE SERIES PROGRESS?
The teams ranked 5th-16th will compete in the first day quarter-fi nals, with only eight teams carrying through to the next day’s competition-the semi-finals. They will be joined by the top four ranked teams in the Championship, and battle to finish in the top six, making it through to the final. Here the winning team will be crowned GCL Super Cup winners.
TEAM STRUCTURE
The first part of the GCL will be on the opening day of each event and this CSI5* 1.50/1.55m class will see teams’ combined scores taken forward to the second class. Two riders from each GCL team compete in each class before the class opens to individual riders. All riders in this class will be chasing Longines world ranking points and teams will be looking to put themselves in pole position ahead of the second round.
The overall winners of the GCL competition will be the team with the least combined faults and the quickest time over the two rounds.

Teams again have a roster of six riders (including at least one U25 athlete) for the season. This means tactics and strategy will remain a priority for team managers and owners, with a large team of horses and riders to field at each distinctive event. There have been plenty of high profile movers and shakers across the grid, with new allegiances formed and unique partnerships forged deeper still, and this season already promises to be an electric showcase of high-octane team sport.

Crucially Ahlmann of Germany will not be taking to the arena in New York so will stay with 238 points to his name in the championship standings, just six points ahead of Maher who currently lies in second on 232 points. A win from Maher at the LGCT of New York will see the current world number 6 soar into the lead on 259 points ahead of the much-anticipated final in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, next month.
As winner of both the 2022 LGCT Grand Prix in Stockholm and Hamburg, and anchor-man of the GCL team Shanghai Swans, Ahlmann is set to defend his lead against Maher who is traditionally in form in the heartland of America, as winner of the 2019 LGCT Grand Prix of New York, and two-time overall winner of the LGCT Championship.

All through the 2022 season, the 16 GCL teams will be fighting tooth and nail for every valuable ranking point, collected at each event on the global circuit. The GCL overall classification is based on each team’s points earned at every GCL event and the top four teams will fast-track their way to the semi-finals of the GCL Super Cup.

The GCL Super Cup will consist of team quarter-final, a semi-final and final rounds. The quarter-final, held over one 1.55m round, is open to 12 teams with three riders per team — those placed 5th to 16th on the GCL overall team standings prior to the GC Prague Playoffs. The best eight placed teams according to the aggregate time and penalties for each of the three riders then qualify for the semi-final the following day where they will be joined by the top four teams on the GCL overall team rankings and each of the three team riders will jump one round over 1.60m. The best six placed team competitions then go head-tohead in the final – held over two different 1.60m rounds against the clock without a jump-off.

As the FEI official charity partner, JustWorld International is joining forces with the LGCT ahead of the highly anticipated New York leg. The LGCT’s commitment to an exceptional quality enhances its philanthropic partnership with JustWorld. These combined efforts will effectively change the lives of children in need through education, healthcare, and nutrition programs in Cambodia, Guatemala, Honduras, and the United States.
Olympic gold medalist Kevin Staut (FRA) is a longtime ambassador of JustWorld International and will continue his devotion to its advocacy at the LCGT New York. He was also the first athlete representative named to the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) Executive Board, so his longstanding loyalty to the organization is commendable, as are his achievements in the Stautsaddle.will be in good company. He is joined by many fellow ambassadors, including Olympian Daniel Bluman (ISR), former leading lady rider Erynn Ballard (CAN), young talent Lucy Deslauriers (USA), and Brazilian Olympian sensation Marlon Modolo Zanotelli.
Rising stars like Mimi Gochman (USA) have also pledged to jump for the cause. Gochman might be 17-year-old, but she has the experience that rivals even that of many of her elders. She is already jumping successfully at the 5* level and was recently part of the winning FEI Youth Equestrian Games 2022 in Aachen. She is not only beyond her years in the saddle but also in her ability to articulate the importance of giving back.

Perhaps the most iconic city in the United States, New York has been dubbed the “concrete jungle where dreams are made of” for its astonishing ability to bring even the loftiest aspirations to life. Surrounded by skyscrapers, whose structures were once thought to be impossible, the city’s existence alone is a reminder that dreams have no limits. It is a sentiment echoed by JustWorld International, which works every day to improve the lives of children against incredible odds.
This sense of community resonates on this leg of the tour, where the backdrop is the breathtaking Manhattan skyline. New York is comprised of five boroughs and is the city with the highest population density in the United States. The unique convergence of cultures is mirrored by JustWorld’s core values and the show jumping venue’s unmatched hospitality.
Looking ahead to this dazzling display of show jumping sport, we hope to see you join the equestrian champions of change when we meet on Governors Island.

Still, laying host to the highest level of show jumping in this mega metropolitan landscape seemed a far-fetched idea before the Longines Global Champions Tour (LGCT) landed on Governors Island in 2019. Now, the penultimate leg of this exclusive tour will put equestrian sport in the spectatorship of Lady Liberty once again, truly bringing together the best of both worlds—and the best of JustWorld International.
The ringside Global Champions Club pays homage to the cultures of their destinations through the art of gastronomy, all while creating an international social network among guests. For that reason, the GC Club is also one of many locations which can foster important discussions on how to collaborate with JustWorld to promote sustainable change worldwide.
