DESTINATION
Rome This year’s Rome event will be staged at ancient Rome’s awe-inspiring Circus Maximus bringing horses back to the World Heritage site for the first time in over 2,000 years. The magnificent ancient stadium, once used by Emperors for horse and chariot races, sits within the City’s UNESCO World Heritage site and will host top-level modern day show jumping for two weeks in September. Circus Maximus sits beneath the famous Palatine Hill and is overlooked by the extraordinary ruins of the Imperial Palace. It is one of the most exceptional arenas for show jumping in the world today and is only one kilometre from the Colosseum where the gladiatorial games took place. The colossal entertainment stadium in ancient Rome will deliver an exceptional atmosphere as the LGCT and GCL Championships race towards their climax in 2021. More than 200 horses will compete in 2* and 5* competitions and the event will also showcase artist exhibitions, animations and shows. Circus Maximus, the first and largest stadium in ancient Rome and the later Roman Empire, will be the new home for LGCT in Rome for the next five years. The venue is 2,037 feet long and sits in a valley between the Palatine and Aventine Hills. The world’s top riders and horses will be in action during the back to back weekends of top show jumping with Italian stars out in force.

longines global champions tour
Explained The 2021 Longines Global Champions Tour kicks off in March with the world’s very best riders competing for a total of €25.9 million in prize money across LGCT and GCL, and the highly prestigious Championship title. As well as the overall ranking battle, athletes will be competing for a place in the highly coveted GC Prague Playoffs, the ultimate showdown for the world’s best, scheduled this year for November at the O2 Arena in the Czech capital city. Here, winners of each LGCT Grand Prix will be invited to compete in the Longines Global Champions Tour Super Grand Prix, the ultimate head-tohead battle of the season’s best. The 2021 season opens in Doha, Qatar and then travels to 15 further destinations across four continents, culminating in the season Finals where this year’s season champion will be crowned. Show jumping’s top riders team up with their best horses for individual honours in a series of spectacular competitions on the tour, with the LGCT Grand Prix as one of the highlights of each event. To help you keep track of this thrilling series of high octane jumping, here is a brief guide to the format:

WHO WILL BE COMPETING IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP? The world’s top riders may take part in any of the 15 LGCT events, earning points and competing for a prize pot of over €300,000

This allows horses to acclimatise to each different venue, which ranges from grass to sand surfaces, with different sized arenas and a range of environments, as well as giving

riders the chance to win some serious prize money.
WHAT ABOUT THE LGCT SUPER GRAND PRIX? This is the ultimate showdown in show jumping. Each winner (or next highest ranked athlete if more than one event is won), will qualify for a place in this special class, held at the GC Prague Playoffs. This will see the best horses and riders across the

season return to face off for the ultimate goal of taking the title of LGCT Super Grand Prix Champion.
WHICH RIDERS COMPETE IN THE LGCT GRAND PRIX? The top 35 riders according to their penalties and time qualify from the previous competition, which also doubles as a second GCL leg, held earlier on the Saturday at each event. Jumping in reverse order of merit from the qualifier, horses and riders begin by jumping over a 1.55m/1.60m course of fences. Any combination that completes on a zero score, or tie on penalties if no combination remains clear, goes through to a jump-off against the clock, held over a shortened course, to decide top honours.

GCL 2021
Explained The 2021 GCL season will see show jumping’s top riders unite in pursuit of championship glory as they battle it out across the world. A total of 16 teams line up for this, the sixth season of the GCL. This tactical series will feature Olympic and world champions going head-to-head, as well as offering some of the world’s leading under-25 riders a chance to compete on the globe stage. The concept is the first top level competition in the sport’s history that allows riders from different nations to compete on the same team, providing a breathtaking spectacle of fierce rivalry and immense team spirit in a modern and dynamic format. The GCL classes take place over two days at each of the global legs of the circuit, running alongside the Longines Global Champions Tour throughout the season. The climax of the year will be the GC Prague Playoffs, as teams battle through the quarter-final, semi-final and final stages of the GCL Super Cup. The countdown is on and here is a brief guide to the format:

Light and dark, shading and texture. For some jewelry designers, silver medal might seem like a limited palette. But for Tuscan artisan and Longines Athina Onassis Horse Show trophy bucket designer Giovanni Raspini, silver is the building block for endless possibilities; contemporary designs that are as intricate as they are beautiful. Inspired by the natural world, Raspini has made the creation of timeless silver homeware and other pieces the center of his life’s work for more than 50 years. Although he frequently designs in other mediums—gold and precious stones, for instance—silver will always be Raspini’s first love.
“I USE SILVER THE MOST,” HE SAYS. “SILVER IS DISTINCT FROM ANY PALETTE OF COLORS; IT DEFINES A WORLD IN BLACK AND WHITE.” Tucked away in his 16th-century home and studio in Valdichiana, in the heart of Tuscany, Raspini uses the age-old method of “lost wax casting” to lovingly sculpt and hand-create his range of cast silver dishes, fragrance holders, champagne buckets, and picture frames. His diverse, natural motifs range from stylized recreations of everything from jaguars, lions, and butterflies, to daisies, seashells, coral, and—his current muse—crocodiles.

When people ask me if it still makes sense to manufacture jewels in Italy, I think it’s funny. It is like asking a French “vigneron” if it makes sense to produce wine in France! [laughs] The artisans I meet every day here in Tuscany are an inside part of a centuries-old tradition. Here, there is a strong connection with the heritage of a rich and refined craftmanship. w Ho ’ s

Once again this year, Giovanni Raspini will create his limited edition, equestrian-themed ice buckets for class winners at the Longines Athina Onassis Horse Show. We caught up with Raspini this spring to learn more about his work, inspirations past and present, and why, among all forms of homeware, designing picture frames is a responsibility he doesn’t take lightly.

Light and darkness make the difference. When it comes to gold and jewels, you have an infinite range of precious stones to offer any color and any reflection. But silver presents you with the possibility of chiaroscuro and bassorilievo, and also gives you the thrill of using plastic modeling, which is then cast with silver using a method known as “lost wax casting.” It has been in use for at least 3,000 years. y ou ’ ve

I am much intrigued by this matter. With champagne buckets, I do not think about occasions when one drinks in a consolatory way—champagne is for celebration and joy. This must be reflected in my buckets and in their design. Silver photo frames, on the other hand, are a different issue from any other piece of silverware. They bear a cornucopia of sweet and personal memories, and this fact makes them different from any other home ornament. Yes, I deeply consider this aspect.

PREMIUMARES breeding for success
A grand prix horse typically completes a first-round track in just a matter of minutes; it’s often just seconds for a jump-off. But the time it takes to get that horse into the ring to begin with—the thoughtful breeding, endless care, training, and dedication—is a process many years in the making.
Milena Pappas, business woman, amateur rider and founder of the elite sport horse breeding company, PremiuMares, understands the irony of this situation all too well. And, for Pappas, it’s a more than worthy tradeoff. “[We feel] it’s important that our foals and mares enjoy enough time out in the fields, especially during the young horses’ tender years,” she says. “We are very selective in the mares we keep and breed. For this reason, we choose to give them extra time before introducing them to the sport. That extra year or two might put them at a disadvantage when compared to young horses that have been in the sport from an earlier age. But, in our experience, being out in the field with other horses builds [strength in] their bodies, joints, and muscles as much as it builds their character and determination.” In that respect, Pappas notes, a little extra patience pays dividends. “A healthy and happy horse will do anything for its rider, and that extra time usually translates into a longer career.”

they are monitored closely for signs of potential, something that Pappas says is easy to spot—if you know what you’re looking for. “Each foal represents hope and a smile for someone in the future,” she says. “To me, each one is a wonder.” “What we [watch] for first is their attitude; how they react to their environment, and how they interact with their similar-aged peers. Initiative, bravery, and curiosity are always good indicators, as is intellect,” Pappas says. “Then, of course, come the physical foundations: How does a young horse move? Is it light on its feet? Does it have a good gallop?”

LOVE YOUR HORSE, LOVE THE WORLD. NATURAL BAMBOO CHARCOAL — RECYCLED AND ECO FRIENDLY At Lami-Cell, our focus is creating quality equestrian products, but we are equally concerned with preserving the world that we all share for future generations. Our latest innovation is the use of natural and recycled Bamboo Charcoal textiles. By recycling, we can prevent further consumption of new raw materials and, thereby, reduce the consequences of energy usage: air pollution from the incineration of discarded materials and water pollution from landfill waste. Additionally, Bamboo Charcoal has many advantages over other materials. It is antibacterial and deodorizing. It regulates body temperature, promotes blood circulation and metabolism, and quickly absorbs moisture. Natural materials like our Bamboo Charcoal are also extremely comfortable for your horse. With our commitment to quality products and our conviction to protect the environment that we all share, when you choose Lami-Cell, you too, are making a significant contribution to a better tomorrow for all of us.
