Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Equestrian Sports Enthusiasts,

On behalf of the Longines management, it is a great pleasure to be in Miami for the second leg of the Longines Global Champions Tour, of which we are the Title Partner and the Official Timekeeper. This event promises great moments of sports and unique entertainment. We are looking forward to the weekend’s highlight trial, the Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of Miami Beach on Saturday.

The second leg of the 2023 series is the perfect opportunity for Longines to present the new Longines DolceVita X YVY line. Swiss designer Yvonne Reichmuth has given the famously rectangular timepieces a new identity, with sophisticated leather straps. Referencing the equestrian world so dear to Longines, their design is evocative to bridles and harness.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Equestrian Sports Enthusiasts, I wish you a thrilling weekend filled with beautiful sports emotions at the Longines Global Champions Tour of Miami, where top-level show jumping meets the very unique atmosphere of this city.

& THE ISTANBUL WARRIORS POWERED BY CARPE DIEM

The Istanbul Warriors powered by Carpe Diem entered the 2023 GCL Championship race with a distinct commitment to success. - a strengthened team and big goals for the year ahead saw an impressive Round 1 performance at the Longines Global Champions Tour in Doha.

We sat down with Team Owner and rider, Efe Siyahi to find out a little more about Carpe Diem, and the year ahead for the Istanbul Warriors.

Efe, tell us a little bit about Carpe Diem!

Carpe Diem is a stable based in Holland, we are quite a big team with 7 riders. There are three of us competing up to 5* level - Derin Demirsoy, Ömer Karaevli, and me, we then also have 4 riders who are competing up to 2* level, whose roles are to bring the young horses on and give them some more experience.

I bought the stable in 2015, and after a big renovation, we moved in at the beginning of 2016 - 7 years ago. We have up to 60 horses at Carpe Diem, with recent works including more stables, a bigger indoor, and more apartments.

What has your journey with Global Champions looked like so far?

This is the second year we are competing with Global Champions. Last year we were in the Istanbul Sultans, and this year I have my own team, the Istanbul Warriors - we are excited with what is to come.

Last year we found ourselves in the GCL team at the last moment, so didn’t have a lot of time for preparation. We are very honoured and happy to be riding in the Global Champions events, it makes us push and grow to the level with all our horses. Our motivation, our investment and our supporters make it better… this year we continue to grow and reach our dream.

Your family is very involved in the sport, tell us a little about them.

My family are long standing supporters of the sport of show jumping. My family likes to follow the tour, also my wife is mostly with me at the events. Of course, depending on the plan, other members of my family like to come and support as much as possible.

Having the Istanbul Warriors on the GCL starting grid this year is an exciting move for you. How have you strategised and built your team?

I take my own riders who are Turkish - Ömer, Derin and me. To make it even stronger we choose the riders who are ready to make it better for us and ready to fight to make our team better. Johanna Beckmann is our U25 rider, who is a growing talent in her level, we are very happy to have her on our team. I think it is very nice that there is a rule that you have to have a U25, it is very important to support the next generation so they can grow at that level. What I am following and what I see, it is really helping to grow the U25 riders into the highest level which is very nice from Global Champions.

The famous Miami Beach offers a pretty special location, what are you looking forward to about the second leg on the Longines Global Champions Tour for 2023?

I have heard a lot about the LGCT of Miami Beach - as a location it is amazing, it is the best location I believe. Being in the middle of the city, there are challenges but it is the price to pay for such a location. I am very excited to be in Miami, and as the Istanbul Warriors, we are aiming to do our best and to stay on top.

LONGINES GLOBAL CHAMPIONS TOUR 2023 THE ULTIMATE INDIVIDUAL CHALLENGE

Explained

As the 2023 season of the Longines Global Champions Tour gets underway, the ultimate individual championship race heats up. With 16-stops on the 2023 tour, horses and riders will be challenged by technical courses, new arenas, unique backdrops and fierce competition.

Top talent, both equine and human, return to the Longines Global Champions Tour in 2023 in pursuit of individual glory. Opening in Doha, the tour spans the continents of Asia, Europe, The Americas and Middle East, delivering unbeatable venues for the best in show jumping.

With Doha as the launch pad, the tour arrives in Miami Beach for the second leg. Swiftly followed by Mexico City, the tour hits a new gear as it heads into the heart of Europe to locations such as Monaco, Paris, St Tropez, Stockholm, London, Risenbeck and Longines Tops International Arena in Valkenswaard, just to name a few.

The undercurrent of all events is the race to the Final. Hosted in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia’s capital city, for the second year, points earned by riders on each stop on the tour contribute to the result of the overall championship finale.

Won by Ben Maher in 2022, in what was labelled the Trifecta of Championships, Maher wrote himself into the history books by taking out his third Longines Global Champions Tour Champion of Champions title.

In a secondary race for glory, riders, owners and trainers alike will be looking to get their hands on a Golden Ticket, a qualification for the Longines Global Champions Tour Super Grand Prix at the GC Prague Playoffs in November. Only 15 tickets up for grabs in 2023, with each winner earning one through a win in a Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix, if riders claim top podium position in more than one LGCT Grand Prix, the golden ticket is then handed down to the second placed rider.

As one of the highlights of each event on the Longines Global Champions Tour, the LGCT Grand Prix attracts jumping’s top riders team up with their best horses for individual honours in a series of spectacular competitions on the tour.

All eyes are firmly focused on the 16-leg tour this year, with the question on everyone’s lips… who will reach pole position on the leaderboard and earn the coveted title of Champion of Champions in 2023?

GCL 2023 SHOW JUMPING’S GREATEST TEAM CHALLENGE

Explained

An exciting 2023 is underway, with GCL again welcoming 16 teams to the 16-event series set to battle it down in the championship race.

With the 2023 season underway, strategy for success continues to be front of mind for Team Owners and Managers, who’s approach has successfully launched what is set to be a highly charged year ahead. The first leg of GCL 2023 saw a formidable performance by Christian Kukuk and Philipp Weishaupt of Riesenbeck International powered by Kingsland, in Doha, Qatar as they took an early lead ahead of the second leg in Miami Beach.

This year sees a change in the GCL series with the introduction of a new weekend format, designed to benefit both horse, rider and team strategy. The biggest change will see Round 1 and Round 2 of the GCL team series now take place on the same day with again no drop score.

A BRIEF GUIDE TO GCL

Launched in 2016, the GCL brings together the world’s best horse and rider combinations from across the world from different nationalities riding on the same teams, rather than decided by country. Each team must feature an U25 rider, providing young talent of today, and future world champions of tomorrow, a launchpad of opportunity to ride, train and build camaraderie amongst their idols and the best in the business.

Each stop on the tour sees the teams compete in two rounds. In true championship style, the team’s combined scores from Round 1 are taken through into Round 2. The easy format of no drop score makes it simple for new audiences in each destination to follow the team competition.

Round 1 of the GCL will see riders faced with a CSI 5* 1.55m class, with team managers strategizing for their best approach for a day of intense competition.

A short break between Round 1 and Round 2 could see strategic changes from Team Managers, who can swap in horses and/or riders between the back to back rounds, ultimately producing a highly competitive Round 2.

Round 2 of the GCL takes place straight after Round 1, is a CSI 5* 1.60m class. In Round 2, teams will be represented by two riders from their team, with scores and points at the end of the competition ultimately going towards their overall team score, and series standing.

Throughout the year teams earn points to the overall total and series standings which comes to a head in the Final in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The teams placed in the top four after the Final will be granted a fast track place at the GC Prague Playoffs for the GCL Super Cup Semi Finals, the ultimate final show-down.

Longines DolceVita X YVY

THE OFFICIAL WATCH OF THE LONGINES GLOBAL CHAMPIONS TOUR IN MIAMI.

During the second leg of the Longines Global Champions Tour in Miami, Longines is proud to present the new Longines DolceVita X YVY line. Swiss designer Yvonne Reichmuth has given the famously rectangular timepieces a new identity, with sophisticated leather straps. Referencing the equestrian world so dear to Longines, their design is evocative to bridles and harness.

As the summer invites watch-wearers to bare their forearms and reveal the timepieces adorning them, the winged hourglass brand is unveiling its new line of Longines DolceVita X YVY models. The Swiss watch brand has matched its watches here with subtle double straps in leather, in three shades: double beige leather, brown and with black with rivets. The design of these models was entrusted to the Zurich-based company YVY, creators of sophisticated glam-rock accessories popular with international stars and a clientele looking for exclusivity.

The complementary worlds of Longines and YVY have come together in an almost instinctive collaboration. The straps of these Longines DolceVita X YVY models are made of Italian or Swiss leather. They are produced according to a traditional manufacturing method. Adorned and reinforced with metal details, their finishes are impeccable and feature striking references to the equestrian world beloved of the winged hourglass brand.

MEET

Colm McKay

Hi Colm, please introduce yourself!

I’m Colm McKay and I joined the Global Champions Tour back in 2014. As the Event Production Manager, I am responsible for the safe delivery of the venue and its operations and the temporary venue overlay.

What does a day in the life of Colm McKay look like on and off event?

My job role is very diverse and it’s such a cliché, but the tasks genuinely differ from day to day. In the lead up to the event, I work on the site layout design, event management plans and construction schedules as well as the contracting of suppliers for the equipment and materials which make up the event. I will also liaise with the City of Miami Beach and its various departments to ensure the permit requirements are met ahead of the load in.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is the work on the ground which includes the site management during the build period, operational days and breakdown of a venue. I must ensure the event is built up on time and to a high standard, then dismantled and the venue is handed back to the City of Miami Beach in better condition than when we took it over.

Miami Beach is one of the most iconic destinations on the Longines Global Champions Tour, what is so special about this event?

Miami Beach is one of the most anticipated stops on the Longines Global Champions Tour, and for good reason too. The images speak for themselves. The LGCT of Miami Beach epitomises what Global Champions is about – bringing the sport to a new audience in the middle of the city with an amazing backdrop and the Atlantic Ocean only a few metres from the competition arena, which is truly unique.

What is the biggest challenge with managing the production of the LGCT Miami Beach?

As with any unique location on the Longines Global Champions Tour, Miami Beach has its own specific challenges, not least its complex Special Event permit process which has so many layers to it.

Hosting an event on Miami Beach means navigating the rules and regulations associated with turtle season, police escorts, lighting and noise restrictions and of course building temporary structures on the sand. Everything has to run like clockwork and our suppliers have to work in harmony with one another to complete the project on time. Thankfully, we work with many great local suppliers who take a professional approach and are familiar with organising events on the beach.

Where to next with your role at Longines Global Champions Tour?

As with all my friends and colleagues at Global Champions, we don’t sit still for very long.

After Miami Beach, I head back to Ireland for a few weeks to spend time with family and friends before stepping into a few busy months of travel. My main focus this year will be on the events in Stockholm, London and New York.

Any final words?

I’m grateful for every day that I’m able to keep doing this job in these amazing locations. I hope you have a truly wonderful weekend at the Longines Global Champions Tour of Miami Beach and can recognise the hard work and dedication from all the team behind the scenes in producing this incredible event.
