Summer 2021

Joana Bento

Hi Joana, congratulations on being the first model chosen to represent the very first edition of Exposer Algarve. Tell our readers a little bit about yourself. I am a confident woman, a fighter! I am not one to say no to new challenges and I am proud of the values that were passed on to me by my family and friends. And where do you see yourself in the next five years? I hope to see myself fulfilled professionally and to be with the ones I love the most.

What's the best thing you've read recently? It has to be when they discovered the vaccine against COVID-19. I can see our lives changing completely and it was as if I saw a light at the end of the tunnel. I felt that we are closer to having a normal life again. If you could live in one historical era, which would you choose and why? The early time to experience the feeling of discovery, to search for something better, to value the simplest things. Who or what drives you absolutely crazy? The social pressure that exists nowadays to have the perfect body. They say they want to deter the trend but then social media and social networks counteract it. Self-care has never been more important or, arguably, more challenging during the pandemic that we all had to endure, what do you do that always makes you feel good about yourself? Without a doubt training and dancing! I feel like I subtracting myself from all the problems around me and I feel lighter. Have you learnt any new skills during the pandemic? If not what do you wish you had gained? Yes! what it is to be an entrepreneur. Due to the pandemic, I had a lot of free time and decided to open an online clothing store. I had no idea how complex it was. But at the same time it is something that fascinates me. With lockdown easing what are you looking forward to the most this summer? Dancing until the morning. I know that unfortunately it won't happen this year yet, but I really want to go out with my friends and have fun without restrictions. We have a tremendous following online across Portugal, tell our readers who plan on visiting the Algarve your recommendations on the best place to eat, drink, party and sunbathe? For me the best beach in the Algarve is Falésia beach because of its extension of sand and the incredible landscape! I love going to the fisherman's beach for drinks and dancing and the best restaurant is "A Ruína" for its location and quality of service. There are many things that should be changed about the world, if you could change one thing, what would it be and why? The gender inequality! The fact that us women are still criticized for the clothes we wear, the behaviors we have, the friendships we build. Unfortunately I have felt it several times and to escape those comments I avoided going to certain places. Nowadays it doesn't affect me anymore but I believe that there are many women who stop being themselves for fear of what others will think and say. It seems like 2021 is just beginning, what do you wish to achieve by the end of this year? I have no plans! I am in a phase of living one day at a time and making the most of every opportunity that comes my way. Finally tell us what makes you the cover girl of this edition? Because of my willpower to grab opportunities, I like to live different experiences and I believe in showing that the confidence we have in ourselves can take us very far.

In the Seventies, ignorance was bliss: the way to get tanned skin was, er, the sun. These days we know too much to go out without SPF, but we still want that glow and make up that will not melt away with the heat. This was successfully achieved by make up artist Élia Camões for Exposer Algarve's first model Joana Bento. Although Joana is naturally blessed with chestnut hue coloured skin, highlighter and bronzer enhanced her skin providing the ultimate blendable shimmer, creating an enviable sunkissed glow we all want this summer without having to overdo it in summers hottest rays. A smokey eye might be a surprising choice for summer, especially among all of summers bright color options, but hear us ou,t the key to this trend for summer is to keep it subtle by sticking with soft browns. Which is what Élia applied on Joana. Pair this, with water slicked back hair and Joana was exuding bond girl-esque vibes. The black and white duo bathing suite from Calzedonia flatters Joana's curvy and athletic build and further enhanced her golden glow. So what was the result? as you can see, the beautiful Joana plus the turquoise waters and the scenic backdrop of Ponta da Piedade em Lagos created a postcard picture brought to life. Leaving us wishing we were all right there with her.

Verão 2021

from the EDITOR You do not need me to tell you that it has been a year unlike any other, we all had our hopes pined for 2021 from the waste of a year that endured us in 2020 only to have those hopes dashed as we entered more lockdowns and restrictions that stopped us living our best lives. At the start of this year, many including myself were counting on being able to finally pre-order tickets to that rescheduled show, host a family members birthday party and get excited about counting down the days to a well deserved exotic trip abroad. As you can imagine, none of those things happened, because the coronavirus pandemic derailed the entire year in every conceivable way. So in order to break our cycle of horrible years perhaps we should stop authoritatively and preemptively declaring that the next year will be better and just let the year do its thing. For starters the roll out of vaccinations against Covid-19, has not been the rush back to normal that many of us hoped for but this slower and steadier move back towards to what once was, is the proof that something seismic has changed in our communities and outlooks. With that ethos the team at Exposer is excited to announce with its previous successes of Exposer Coimbra and Exposer Leiria the expansion to its neighbouring sister city of Aveiro and of course here, the coastal holiday hotspot of the Algarve, a district highly commendable and felicitous to our brand. If thinking of paying Coimbra, Leiria or Aveiro a visit, check out whats occurring by reading the summer editions online @ exposermagazine.pt. In our exclusive interview we speak to Portuguese Futsal star Ricardinho, who's level of success is almost mind-boggling to us mere mortals, but his passion for his craft, as well as the joy he finds in his partnership with the Portuguese jewellery brand Zarco, amongst other accomplishments , shines through in the interview with the sports star (pag. 18). Inspiration continues throughout the pages as we have brought together the trends and expertise that will inspire you from the outside in, whether you are making plans for your idyllic sustainable getaway (pag. 47 ) or a perfect staycation in Portugal (pag. 50), now a regular feature in our travel section. How about upgrading your transport for luxury leisure drives (pag. 24), or simply transforming yourself and your home with tantalising sought after objects of desire from our wishlist (pag. 16). The inimitable comedian Hugo Sousa also adds some well needed humour into our lives as he tells us about his journey through comedy (pag. 28). We also review the art works of Ai Weiwei deemed the most powerful artist in the world. Currently displaying his art work in Lisbon, the brave and unrelenting critic of the authoritarian regime has been a symbol of struggle of human rights in China and showcases this through his art pieces, see some of his best work (pag. 34). The artistic focus continues as we select some global artists creative response to the coronavirus (pag. 64). As we approach the midst of summer I hope you enjoy reading Exposer Algarve's very first edition, a combination of the very best Algarve has to offer, as well as Portugal's trendiest occurrences and dashes of global news. So lets celebrate this period of renewal after a tumultuous 15 months that has hit Algarve the greatest and support our towns local businesses that are bringing joy and normality back into our lives. Lets also look forward to setting our own challenges and goals that will take us to the next level of our own successes whether thats getting that little be further on our morning jog to reaching our wildest aspirations - slow and steady, one step at a time, together we will win the race.

Ricardinho R10

In this edition, Exposer gives you the opportunity to meet the legend of world futsal who told us about his achievements, routines, inspirations, and passions. Introducing Ricardinho! 18 \\ www.exposermagazine.pt

Ricardinho // PROFILE

S

tarting from your childhood. What is your first memory related to football? I remember always going to school with the ball and playing after school in the "park" in Fânzeres, where we used to make the benches to place the goals, and when I was only 6 years old I asked my mum for my ID card, because I wanted to play federated, in a team called Estrelas de Fânzeres. How was it growing up in Bairro Timor in Gondomar? My move to Bairro de Timor in Valbom (Gondomar) happened because we had a fire in the house we had in Fânzeres and, at the time, the state gave us three possi bilities and we decided to go to Valbom. It was very hard in the beginning. After a fire, it meant starting from scratch. I left school behind, my friends, my club... but with time we adapted well, created new bonds of friendships, and I returned to my passion which was and is to play football. It's true that it's a neighbourhood where there is crime, like drugs and robberies, but it was part of my growth and my strong mentality, because I had to find a way not to fall into those paths.

Unfortunately I really don't remember... I remember several goals, but not the first one! But I would like to see it and remember it! You have an enviable curriculum with passage by the best futsal clubs in the world. You have played in Japan, Russia, Spain and now most recently in France. How has your family been dealing with the constant changes? It is very difficult. In fact, my separation, with the person I married, was largely due to these constant changes and the distance. Unfortunately, not everyone has the structure, mental strength and capacity for this lifestyle. I was always very focused and knew what I wanted, wherever I went. There were really many cultural and sports experiences, but I would do it all again, it was and is amazing. The children are the ones who suffer the most, but I hope soon to be able to return home and compensate for this distance by being a more present father.

" Who would have thought that April the 25th, a few years later, would really be an unforgettable date for me, As I won the futsal Champions League with Benfica."

Who was your first great idol in the football world? When I was younger, my great idol was Ronaldo Fenômeno. Later on, I had some other great names like Devo, Figo, Ronaldinho, amongst others. How did Futsal appear in your life? Pure coincidence! I played and always wanted to play football. I played until I was 13, until one day they took away or killed my dream, because of my height. It was then that I decided I would stop playing. One day, on April the 25th I was invited to play in a 7-a-side soccer tournament, already after being inactive for about a year and lo and behold, it went well, I was happy and we won the tournament. That day, a lady named Carolina Silva, a coach, saw something in me and asked me to play on her futsal team. After much thought and denial, I accepted, and here I am! Who would have thought that April the 25th, a few years later, would really be an unforgettable date for me, As I won the futsal Champions League with Benfica. Do you still remember your first goal for Gramidense?

And from all that you have experienced around the world, what was the cultural difference that impressed you the most? On the positive side, it was Japan. I loved Japan! The respect, the way of life, all the experiences were incredible. The worst was Russia. Cold people, just like the country, but it was a learning experience, of course. Now talking about our national team where you had a dream debut in the European Championship 2007 with four goals scored. What does it mean for you to wear the national jersey and represent your country? It was, without a doubt, unforgettable. At my home (Gondomar) it was incredible, it was a pity we didn't get either the final or a medal, it would have been the icing on the cake at that time, but I will never forget it. Wearing that jersey, hearing the anthem, and being able to represent thousands of people was unforgettable and one of the most beautiful things I have ever experienced. And it still contin ues to be an immense pride. Each training session, each game with the national jersey is exciting and I will miss it when it's over. Speaking of the collective, there are already 32 titles you have achieved in your professional career, both at club and national team level? Which ones had a more special meaning for you? I honestly don't know how many, I know they are many, but I don't count. When I finish playing I will have time to count them and really understand all that I conquered in a sport that welcomed me for life! Futsal has given me everything and I just try to give back the best way I know how on and off the field. The first home league I won, the Champions League, the title with the National Team... they all have their importance, each in its own way. Impressive, 6 times the best futsal player in the world. When did it click and you realise that you really had the potential to become the best futsal player in the world? How far does your ambition go? Those yes, I have counted because, to date, it is a record and also because they are few and easy to count. (laughs) When I won for the first time, in 2010, in all honesty, I felt that I was one or two years behind... However, you undoubtedly feel a huge joy because you are the number 1 of millions of practitioners in the world. Obviously it would be even more valuable if you were valued more by FIFA or UEFA, but nobody can take that feeling away from me!

www.exposermagazine.pt // 19

I'm happy because I was the first Portuguese to give this merit to our sport and I hope there are more in the future because Portugal has a lot of talent! I always felt that I could be the best in the sport I play, it was all a matter of hard work and being lucky with injuries, because I am very ambitious! How do you prepare mentally for each game? Do you have any special habits or superstitions? I used to. I would always call my mother. Later, I stopped believing in that because I think that everything should be trained and prepared, and then I started to prepare myself more at the level of concentration, visualising good things that could happen, and I also like to listen to music, happy music, fun music that you can dance to, because that's what I try to do on the field! I also watch videos of the rivals at home so that I can choose the less strong opponents and know better the weak points of the team! What is your daily training routine? Do you follow any diet? There were times when I was very strict. Now not a little less, maybe because it's been a long time, but I like to take care of myself. Most of all, I love to train, I feel the need, and that helps so that every now and then I can skip the regime. (laughs) Tell us a bit about the Ricardinho & Ortiz Academy, and about the plans for the future of this project... Academia de Tecnificaçao is an academy that was created by a need to bring back the creative player, to not lose that boldness and ability to have the ball, to not be afraid of making mistakes. This is what we try to transmit and pass on to the younger players around the world, as we have already done in Japan, Bolivia, Spain, and very soon in the United States. Nowadays, coaches take a lot of the creative capacity from athletes, they want robots, and then we complain that there is no creativity and creative goals... I hope this is a project for many years to come. Before the Academy project, you also released two books, "Ricardinho Magia nos pés" and "A magia acontece onde há dedicação". Which was for you the biggest challenge as an author? The hardest and biggest challenge was trying to explain and show what I really wanted to those who would write it, but I think the message got through and I am very happy for that! How do you use your influence, especially on social net-

works with over 1M followers to make a difference? I try to show a little (not too much) of my private/personal life for people to understand that I am not a robot, that I am human, that I have good and bad days and that I also have problems, even though I have my dream job and that I still have my salary and get paid affection for doing it. Then, to show a little bit of the backstage of training, games to try to help in the preparation for what I call success, which is to give your best in every game, but until then there is and must be preparation, not everything is luck and talent! And there is also room to create some partnerships with entities, brands, or initiatives with which I identify myself. What do you usually do in your free time? Do you have any other passion besides soccer? I love swimming pool, beach, playing PlayStation, being with my friends and family. I am a big fan of Poker and one day I would like to dedicate myself to this game of skill that I love so much. You have launched a jewellery collection. How did this challenge come up? What is your relation with fashion? Where can we find your accessories? I am a fashion lover, a fan of jewellery and accessories, and I have always expressed to my agent, Diana Ramos, from Glam, the will to do something in that sense. So, the invitation came through my agency and it was a path made side by side. I would like to create something with a national brand until Zarco came along. In partnership with this Portuguese brand, I developed a capsule collection of men's accessories, composed of 4 exclusive pieces. All pieces were designed for a fashionable, active man who takes care of themselves and likes, like me, to have an element to mark a special moment. Finally, what is the message you would like to leave to the younger ones, who dream one day to become a professional football player like you? First of all, that they should never take NO as something that will stop them from doing what they love the most, that they should fight for what they want to be, even though they know they might not make it, because the real loser is the one who gives up and doesn't go for it. Then, that they should know how to listen, respect and improve every day, because you learn from everything!

it's a MAD WORLD ... japan Are 3D printed homes the future of real estate?

Can you envision yourself living in a house that resembles a cell, can be 3D printed, is weather-resistant, and easily transportable? And all for the price of a new car. Serendix Partners is betting on this as a viable future habitat. The house, spotted by SoraNews24, is light but sturdy and costs 3 million yen (about €28,500). It was designed by Japanese architect Masayuki Sono, winner of the NASA 3D housing challenge. This future-oriented home takes the form of a spherical honeycomb cell. Its size is modest, about 30 square meters, but every centimeter is optimised to offer a pleasant living space. This futuristic house design responds to many issues facing housing today. According to Serendix Partners, the firm that developed the concept, the decreasing number of carpenters, particularly in Japan, has increased the prices of traditional constructions. Entrusting the building of this structure to robots that print in 3D therefore significantly reduces costs. And the construction time, fully automated and therefore more “fluid,” according to the firm, is 24 hours. In addition to its manufacturing time and cost, the house has other advantages: it is resistant to natural disasters such as earthquakes and typhoons. It is also easily transportable — a major advantage at a time of global warming. Many developing countries seem to blackout when figuring out solutions for homeless residents. Getting affordable and quick homes isn’t very feasible. However, with 3D printing, it is. Using these machines, it is easier to build economical houses and homes for the economically challenged population of developing countries. Also, these solutions are cost as well as time effective. Just putting the designs into the 3D printer’s memory will do the trick. Well, not as simple as it sounds, still convenient when compared to traditional construction workflow. Will this half-igloo half-alveolar house find a place in your home? In any case, that’s the goal of Serendix, which patented its plans in 2020.

GERMANY Scientists are producing deadly zoonoses on this tiny German island The German island of Riems is home to some of the most dangerous virology research on the planet. On a small, unassuming German island called Riems lies one of the oldest virus research institutes in the world. And also one of the most dangerous. The Friedrich Loeffler Institute is closed to the public. To access the island, approved visitors must first cross a small stretch of the Baltic Sea via a dam, which can be closed immediately in case of an outbreak. To enter the facility, they must take a shower and put on protective clothing. Inside, scientists study some of the world's most deadly viruses, including bird flu, Ebola and mad cow disease. One of their many focuses is zoonoses, which are diseases that can be spread from animals to humans, or vice versa. But the facility was originally founded in 1910 to study foot-and-mouth disease. Over the following decades, the Friedrich Loeffler Institute was used for various purposes, including the development of chemical weapons during World War II, vaccine research during the Cold War, and the study of animal welfare and husbandry. It eventually earned the nickname the "island of plagues." In 2010, the Friedrich Loeffler Institute completed construction on a series of new laboratories that are classified as biosafety level 4, one of the most dangerous distinctions. Today, there are only a handful of level-4 facilities worldwide. Zoonoses pose a major threat to humans. From malaria to rabies, they account for about 60 percent of all infectious diseases contracted by humans, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that "3 out of every 4 new or emerging infectious diseases in people are spread from animals. But as scientists continue to study how to treat, prevent and contain these infectious diseases, it's also worth noting the threats they pose to animals. The animal toll has been much greater, according to neurobiologist and public health physician Professor Charles Watson, when the Nipah virus broke out in Malaysia in the late 1990s there were relatively few human deaths but five million pigs had to be slaughtered in order to wipe it out. One reason zoonoses are so deadly for animals is that they mysteriously don't hurt humans, even when we contract them.

FRANCE Inception is here: French researchers “talk” to lucid dreamers for the first time New studies show that some people can hear and respond to questions while dreaming. From Leonardo DiCaprio to Freddie Krueger, pop culture has long been fascinated with the idea of entering someone else's dreams to influence their thoughts—or steal their souls. Of course, dreams have a much longer track record than blockbuster movies. We've long been enthralled with the possibilities of what occurs when we drift off into that "other" world. But what if that world isn't as "other" as we believed? Unlike many studies, which are conducted by one team of researchers, four teams in four labs in four countries led by France recently attempted to communicate through dreams. The results were published in the journal, Current Biology. In total, 36 volunteers were asked a total of 158 questions. Methods of replying ranged from smiling and frowning to eye movements. The French team went so far as to request Morse code tapped out with eye patterns in a display of, as the team writes, "interactive dreaming." Participants in this study certainly experienced their imagination stretching, with one volunteer "hearing" the math problem (what is eight minus six?) through a car radio while another dreamer was questioned by a movie narrator. The results were overwhelmingly positive, proving successful enough to warrant further research. While the researchers aren't stealing secrets from the subconscious, they hope this discovery could open up new avenues of therapeutics in the treatment of anxiety, depression, and trauma. The idea of accessing "dream content" that they can inform with new content could lead to non-invasive forms of treatment—or "Inception."

japan Introducing Poimo, a Japanese inflatable electric scooter

Wondering what’s next for mobility? Check this out. The Japanese are never short of ideas when it comes to innovation. After unveiling the first prototype this spring, the University of Tokyo is now presenting a new version of its “poimo” concept (“Portable and Inflatable Mobility”), an inflatable electric scooter. The aim is to create an easily transportable device for use as and when needed. The “poimo” project is the fruit of a collaboration between researchers from the University of Tokyo and the research and development division of the startup Mercari (Mercari R4D). They’re working on developing something called “soft mobility” solutions, with soft, lightweight and inflatable credentials to create easily portable mobility devices, some of which can even be carried in a backpack. As well as saving space, the advantage of the latest concept is that it can theoretically be custom fit to suit different body sizes. The idea is that each user can find a mobility solution that suits their needs, their body size and their riding position. The various inflatable elements then combine to make a unique vehicle. This new prototype will be presented at UIST online conference based in Minneapolis, USA.

USA GREAT BRITAIN Injured dog owner spends £300 on X-Rays and vets for his limping dog only to learn he was only copying him out of sympathy Below pictured is the heartwarming moment a dog imitates his injured owner's limp out of sympathy as he walks beside him. Russell Jones, whose leg had been placed in a plaster cast, took to social media to share footage of his beloved lurcher Bill hop along the street with his paw raised above the ground in an effort to mimic his owner's movements. The proud dog owner, whose video has since received more than two million views on social media, later took to Facebook to write: 'Cost me £300 in vet fees and X-rays, nothing wrong just sympathy. Love him.' In 2011, scientists at the University of Vienna provided the first evidence of 'automatic imitation' in dogs and found that canines will imitate their owners with or without the prospect of a reward.

e had the pleasure of getting to know and test driving the new EQA and were quite surprised by what we discovered, it does indeed measure up to being one of the most anticipated EQ models of the year that perfectly combines beauty and futuristic design with the most innovative technologies in the automotive world. At first glance, the closed grill with a black background and the star positioned in the centre stood out, as well as the spectacular horizontal fibre optic strip which joins the daytime running lights. It also features incredible LED headlights at both ends of the front and all around the rear, which added more punch to the futuristic design. Its interior, extremely spacious, takes into consideration the passengers' comfort, counts once again with MBUX technology, in which we can operate our EQA in an intelligent and intuitive way using the high-resolution screens. All of this is possible with gestures, touches and even your own voice. In addition, the unique dashboard is guaranteed by the interfaces intended for smartphone and digital media. Another strength of the EQA is its ease of use in everyday life thanks to the Electric Intelligence function. The system calculates the fastest route to the destination. Based on continuous simulations of the distance, the system considers any charging stops as well as various other factors, such as the topography of the route and the weather. On the road, the smooth driving and, above all, the silence on board stands out, even for an electric car. The electric motor has an incredible autonomy of 426 km and reacts as soon as we touch the accelerator, doing 8.9 seconds from 0 to 100 km/ hour. Ready to drive the future?

PROFILE //

Hugo Sousa

Exposer decided to do a little catch-up with the real "Boss" of stand-up comedy, the great Hugo Sousa during his "Return to Abnormality" tour. We reminisced about his early days and the start of his career and also talked about what inspired him to do a tour dedicated to such a particular moment as the pandemic...

When did you come to the conclusion that you were a naturally funny kind of guy? From the age of around 7/8 years old I realised that I could make people laugh by telling jokes. I was an introverted kid but when it came to telling jokes I lost my embarrassment because I loved to make people laugh. Do you remember your first stand-up comedy session in the spotlight? Before the spotlight I went through a process of doing stand-up comedy in bars. This had nothing to do with being the limelight but this prepared me for real shows. The first big show I did was Stand Up and Laugh. What was the biggest hiccup you've ever had on stage? There's been so many! ahah. What worries me the most is if I make a joke and the audience doesn't laugh. If I make a mistake and people laugh than it's OK. Who are your national or international stand-up comedy references? I really like Dave Chappelle, Jim Jefferies, Louis CK, Eddie Izzard... There are many more I love but these are my main references. Where do you get the inspiration and themes to develop your stand-up comedy sessions? Inspiration comes a lot from things that happen around me. Those who know my style know that I love telling stories and analysing situations that I come across.

How has the pandemic been affecting you in terms of your personal and professional life? In personal terms, I have been very sad, however, it has allowed me to spend more time at home with my daughter who just turned 9 months old. At a professional level I can't complain much because I've been working. Less than in 2019 but still regularly. During the pandemic, those who suffered most were not the artists but those who do the backstage work and without those people in the show there wouldn't be a show in the first place. I stand in solidarity with all those professionals. What inspired you for your "Return to abnormality" tour ? Like I mentioned earlier, everything that occurs around me. We're in a very peculiar moment where all our lives have been affected negatively but you have to see the funny side of everything that has also occurred. What were your expectations for this Tour? I was expecting this to be my biggest tour ever, and it was, ahah! You started off big, with seven shows in a row. How was your audience this year? Demanding as always? Yes, extremely, I was always giving, and the audience didn't disappoint! I take this opportunity to thank everyone for their presence! Finally, what message do you want to give to your fans... Stop sending bras and other underwear garments through the the mail... It's enough!

AMIZA Sushi Bar is an authentic dream come true for its owners Daniel Szczepanski and his wife Filipa Szczepanski who opened their first sushi bar at the beginning of this year right in the centre of Loulé. It was a project that was born in a state of emergency and as such, they were forced to open on a TAKE AWAY basis. But the truth is that it was this way that they won the Algarvians' hearts, and soon KAMIZA became famous with its free deliveries, practically throughout the region. They only work with the best Asian products, imported directly from Japan. Besides Japanese products, they also use a series of regional products to maintain and represent the Portuguese culture by creating a fusion of modern Japanese cuisine. The sauces, including Teriyaki, sweet and sour and fruity sauces are all 100% homemade. The fish arrives at KAMIZA daily and fresh, coming from several points of the Algarve and is selected only among pieces of superior qual such as Bluefin Tuna (Kuromaguro), Sea Bass, King Crab,

Lobster and a variety of caviar. Another highlight is their immense consideration for their customers in that each order is always prepared on the spot and served, or delivered immediately in order to create a perfectly extraordinary taste experience full of freshness and intense flavours. With all this dedication and professionalism, it's nothing new that KAMIZA has already become a reference in the Algarve sushi world, and the result of this success is the fact that a second space is about to be inaugurated, KAMIZA Sushi Bar 2 with a date scheduled for the 8th August, which will also be in Loulé and will present itself with a capacity for 60 seats, covered terrace and private parking. Well, now there's really no excuse, whether it's for TAKE AWAY, at KAMIZA 1, or at KAMIZA 2, there are plenty of alternatives for a memorable and authentic sushi experience that will surely satisfy all your most refined desires for this truly a wonder of Asian gastronomy.

IS IT ART OR POLITICS?

Ai Weiwei Its both. One of the world's renonowned conceptual artists, Ai Weiwei fuses art and activism in his contemporary work. Throughout his career, the artist has never shied away from difficult truths and has resolutely fought for freedom of expression. Through sculpture, film, installation, photography and architecture – and across an array of materials including ceramics, marble, paint and tea – he has campaigned for human rights with works dealing with oppression, commemoration and Chinese identity and social history, as poignant as they are provocative. Showcasing his exhibition Rapture in Cordoaria Nacional in Lisbon up until November 28th , we pay homage to some of his key works throughout his career.

Ai Weiwei // SCENE

Circle of Animals/Zodiac heads, 2010. Ai has recreated the famous twelve bronze animal heads that once adorned the Zodiac Fountain in Yuan Ming Yuan, the Old Summer Palace, in Beijing. Cast around 1750, the original heads were looted by Anglo-French troops who took part in the destruction of Yuan Ming Yuan in 1860 during the Second Opium War. The heads remain a potent trigger for Chinese nationalist sentiments. For Chinese people, these animal heads symbolise 100 years of humiliation and they continue to activate nationalistic pride and anger.

Straight, 2008–12. Straight is Ai Weiwei’s poignant response to the Sichuan earthquake of 2008. Poorly built schools in the Sichuan province – held up by steel rods which twisted and mangled in the quake – were devastated, leaving thousands of students dead. These rods (which Ai had labourers straighten by hand) make up the 90-ton floor-based sculpture, that is laid out in broken undulations recalling fault lines.

Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn, 1995. In 1995, Ai smashed an antique urn. He had became fascinated with China’s traditional heritage that Mao had tried to wipe out during the Cultural Revolution (1966-76). He would visit antique markets, gathering items that he’d learnt from Duchamp could be presented as artworks in themselves, or “readymades” – among them, 2000 year-old urns from the Han Dynasty. Creating what is still one of his most provocative works, the artist photographed himself dropping one.

Forever Bicycles, 2013. In Forever – the latest of Ai’s Forever Bicycle series – the artist acknowledges his appreciation of Marcel Duchamp, and in particular Duchamp’s first readymade, Bicycle Wheel of 1913. This installation is a grouping of 1,179 stainless steel bicycle frames, held together in geometrical shapes. The sculpture’s name refers to the Forever bicycle brand which has been producing bikes in Shanghai since 1940, and the work can be seen as both a reference to Chinese peasants (for whom the Forever bicycle was a primary means of transport) and a comment upon the widespread mass production that fuels China’s industries.

Ye Haiyan’s Belongings, 2013. Ye Haiyan is an activist for women’s rights in China. In response to her activism, the Chinese government evicted her from her home, leaving her, her daughter and their luggage on the side of a motorway. Ai has helped Ye Haiyan financially since she became homeless, and eventually turned her hastily packed belongings into an artwork.

Gilded Cage, 2017. The golden structure resembling a bird cage is Ai's response to witnessing a rise in nationalism, an increase in the closure of borders, and an exclusionary attitude towards migrants and refugees, the victims of war and the casualties of globalization. In harmony with Weiwei’s soulful and politically charged oeuvre, the work calls to mind a birdcage — emblematic of freedom curtailed. Visitors are encouraged to enter the 25ft structure through a series of turnstiles, thereby inviting consideration of the refugee’s siloed experience. Refracting sunlight from its steel skeleton nigh on painfully, one is reminded of the famous line from William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice: ‘All that glitters is not gold.’

re lab-grown diamonds the future of sustainable jewellery?

The jewellery industry is embracing sustainability and the most interesting example is the turn towards lab-grown diamonds, a smart move that’s transforming the diamond industry.

What are they?

A lab-grown diamond is made by putting a fragment of diamond, either mined or lab-grown, into a high-temperature, high-pressure growth chamber. After a few months the stone will begin to crystallise and take the shape of a diamond – something that would take billions of years in the natural world. Even though they’re not from the earth as per mined diamonds, they’re physically, chemically and aesthetically the real deal.

Why are they more sustainable? Lab-grown diamonds are the ethical diamond choice for a number of reasons. Firstly, there’s the human cost of mined diamonds. Conflict diamonds or ‘blood diamonds’ have plagued the industry. The term describes diamonds mined in areas ruled by force that are sold to fund military action against the government. This has led to prolonged violence, human rights exploitation and dangerous working conditions. As well as the human consideration, there’s the environmental impact of diamond mining to consider, which is why many people are turning to lab-grown diamonds. Deforestation, soil erosion and the loss of animal habitats are all attributed to irresponsible diamond mining, while some mines are now so vast they can actually be seen from space. It also requires displacing around 250 tonnes of earth for every single carat of diamond and twice the amount of energy (including diesel, gas, oil and petrol) to produce one carat compared to a lab-grown diamond. In an era where there’s heightened awareness and urgency around environmental responsibility, lab-grown diamonds seem like a no-brainer. It’s especially true when you consider that they’re 50% - 60% less expensive than mined diamonds. Where to buy them Acoording to diamonds.pro the best places to buy lab created diamonds this year are as follows 1. James Allen – The best place for lab-created diamond engagement rings, offering over 30,000 high-quality lab diamonds with IGI certificates and superior ring settings. 2. Blue Nile – Their Lightbox collection offers the best place to buy lab-created diamond necklaces, earrings, and bracelets including stones with color. 3. Clean Origin – Another top vendor with thousands of lab-created diamonds to choose from for engagement rings, wedding bands, bracelets, earrings, and pendants.

FOOD &DRINK YUMMY EDIBLE STRAWS

Edible straws, have become the next brand innovation in the quest for sustainability. Brands are embracing flavoured edible straws in an effort to enhance the drinking experience while simultaneously working to eliminate plastic waste. For example, US-based Loliware has created plant-based straws that look and feel like plastic but start to decompose 18 hours after use. The star ingredient is seaweed, which means that it won’t harm marine life if it ends up in the ocean and can even be eaten by fish. In India, Nom aims to combat the stigma that edible straws are tasteless. Their flour-based, edible straws come in a variety of flavours to provide “drink compatibility”. Flavours include vanilla, butterscotch, mint, chocolate and lemon-citrus. Therefore don't throw away that plastic straw, instead get ones you can eat.

The three-Michelin-starred dining spot in France, which currently holds the top spot of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list, believed ‘unprecedented times bring unprecedented opportunity'. Chef Colagreco used Mirazur’s temporary closure to reimagine the culinary concept, resulting in an ever-changing ‘Lunar Menu' driven by the cycle of nature. By day, Mirazur's hillside garden is drenched by the sun and by night it’s lit up by the moon, resulting in a menu that’s divided into four separate offerings Root, Leaf, Flower and Fruit—to align with the cycle of the moon. New dishes are created on a daily basis with no set menu for diners.

MOOD-ENHANCING ICE CREAM JUST IN TIME FOR SUMMER With the perils of lockdown in our wake, ice cream although already boosts the dullest of moods has returned with flavours to enhance spirits. DECOR

Contemporary Portuguese

Stylish and traditonal

In the middle of summer, there is no better way than to start the night in the most cosmopolitan avenue of the country, the "Strip de Albufeira", but if it is to be one of those that will stay in memory, then you will have to start with an authentic and sublime gastronomic experience that only The Market, can offer. This restaurant is undoubtedly a very distinct space with the best views over the avenue and the distant sea dominated by the beautiful warm colours of the most spectacular sunsets. The half moon designed architecture allows the wonderful views to be enjoyed from anywhere you are seated. The interior has a chic and modern vibe, with a beautiful and wellequipped wine cellar and wonderful bar where the most peculiar and interesting cocktails are created. As for the outside veranda, it has a more tropical "vibe", where the beautiful palm trees stand out, as well as the original landscaped wall, the pleasant ambient lighting and, finally, the triangular designs, which besides being functional also give a very artistic and cool "look" to this whole outside space. The atmosphere is super animated, as background music of the bars of the avenue are heard as well as laughter and conversations that can be heard in all languages. The waiters are very attentive and helpful, with an immense attention to detail, so much so they were without fault the entire night. There is an "open kitchen" concept, allowing us to appreciate the hustle and bustle of the whole kitchen team that, with the "sound and step" of chef Márcio Silva, who creates the most incredible dishes that, just by watching them pass in front of us, make us salivate. Mr Jorge and his wife are as friendly as we've ever seen them. Full of enthusiasm, passion and dedication they make us feel as if we were eating in the dining room of their own house, and transmit this humble and kind hospitality to their restaurant, a unique energy felt as soon as you enter the building. An example is Mr Jorge not once forgetting our name the entire night, even on a night as busy as it was, revealing a strong customer service culture at the very heart f the restaurant. With such an impressive bar, and given the fame that the cocktails from "The Market" have already conquered due to their originality and irrever-

ence, we decided to opt for Mr. Jorge's suggestion, who prompted us to try one of the signature cocktails of the house, the "El Patron". Our first reaction when we saw the "El Patron" arriving at the table was really strange, but then we came to the conclusion that it was a frozen pepper served as a glass, presented inside a small basket decorated with limes and lemons, as if it was a real "fruit box", like the ones typically found in markets. And believe me, the taste was totally at the same level as the decoration, being a true fresh summer cocktail, where tequila is the was the real highlight. With so many options, for starters we chose the Smoked Salmon Tartar, Beetroot Hummus and Citrus Pearls. Wow, what an impressive dish of immense freshness with that unique touch of citrus balls that "explode" on our palate, the chips brought a crunchy texture to the dish and finally the padron peppers, which combine perfectly with the smoked taste of the salmon. As we were in the middle of the Algarve coast, we had to try the fish, so when we read the menu, our attention turned immediately to the Tuna Loin with Lime and Asparagus Risotto. The tuna loin, was perfectly served: soft and pink in the middle, and with a more cooked texture on the outside which was further accentuated with the addition of sesame seeds. Then the risotto, but what a nice surprise as it was truly robust in flavour, and nicely balanced with the citrus hints of the lime, and the asparagus still a little "al dente", which brought a more brooding texture to the creaminess of the dish. It's a dish so well done, that even our eyes closed naturally while we enjoyed every bite. Among the various options to finish this meal in the best way, we can say that we ended in beauty with the bold flavours of the vegan lemon cake and prickly pear sorbet. The dessert besides being very well presented and worthy of being on instagram, surprised us with its irreverent flavours and the combination of the citric of the lemon with the sweetness of the fig. The coffee came with a little surprise, a fabulous truffle, and then not wanting to leave so soon we ordered another cocktail. A clear sign that we did not want a time to end so soon, a big thank you to Mr Jorge, his wife and the rest of the staff for the fantastic experience. We were fans and will surely come back for more nights like this.

How Tea Rituals Are Enjoyed Around The World

Portugal is renowned for its love of coffee whilst tea often takes a back seat, but remember a cup of tea isn’t merely a drink: It’s the history of the world itself. Before steel, before oil, before cars before guns or Coca-Cola, there was tea. On that note, calling all tea lovers! This one's for you. JAPAN Perhaps no culture on earth loves rituals as much as the Japanese do. There, the things we in the West consider forgettable, even mundane the arrival of the full moon, the budding of spring’s first blossoms, the changing of the leaves from green to gold—are cause for celebration and memorialization. So it’s little wonder that drinking a cup of tea should be treated with similar formality and elegance. Instead of steeping dried tea leaves in boiling water, matcha, hailing from Japan, is created by grinding young green tea leaves into a bright green powder. Though matcha is known for its strong levels of caffeine, the ritual of preparing the beverage is respected as a calming, choreographic technique. The Japanese tea ceremony is called chanoyu and matcha is enjoyed with Japanese sweet treats to offset the bitter taste from the drink. SOUTH AFRICA Rooibos is a caffeine-free herb that is indigenous to the Cederberg region of South Africa. It has been harvested and brewed in the mountainous region for hundreds of years. In fact, South Africa is the only country in the world that produces rooibos. Once brewed, the tea is red in color and has a bitter taste, similar to yerba mate. It's also known as red tea or red bush tea. TAIWAN Bubble tea, also known as boba or black pearl tea, is a popular iced-tea drink from Taiwan. It was created in the late 1980s when milk tea had already been common in Asian countries. Bubble tea combines a base of milk tea, sweetener, and "bubbles," which are small balls made from tapioca or fruit jelly. Bubble tea is made by shaking the iced- tea base with milk to produce a rich, silky texture. The air bubbles created by the vigorous shaking are an essential element of the drink. MOROCCO In Morocco, atai the process of brewing and drinking tea, is a ceremonious tradition that symbolizes friendship, hospitality, and a level of comfort with guests. The tea itself is a combination of Chinese gunpowder green tea and lots of dried or fresh mint, with sugar to taste. I t’s served from standing height into the glass below, a beautiful, elaborate gesture, but it also aerates the tea, making it more flavorful and releasing its aroma throughout the room. The ritual of pouring hot tea from a great height is an impressive sign of an experienced host.

GREAT BRITAIN They may not have discovered it, but no one (save the Chinese) loves tea more than the British. The United Kingdom’s two greatest contributions to tea are in fact relatively recent ones. The first, Earl Grey—a blend of black tea given a distinctive floral note from bergamot oil— was invented for the 2nd Earl Grey in the 1830s served with sandwiches and cake at teatime between 4-7pm. The 2nd, English breakfast tea is meant to accompany a protein-rich English breakfast. It is made from strong black tea typically from China, India, Kenya, or Sri Lanka. English breakfast tea is prepared by steeping your tea bag in hot water for three to five minutes and is finished with a splash of milk and teaspoon of sugar. INDIA Chai in Hindi means tea. Masala chai is a spiced tea originating from India, and combines black tea, usually Assam, with aromatic spices like cardamom, cinnamon, ground cloves, ground ginger, black peppercorn and nutmeg. It is often slow brewed to become rich and creamy and sweetened with honey or jaggery. Traditionally, the milk used to make masala chai comes from water buffalos. The drink has become widely popular and is best enjoyed with snacks. Almost every block in India has its own chai wallah who makes his proprietary version of chai. THAILAND Cha yen is a sweet drink that's bright in color and starts with a strong base of black tea. It is a staple of Thai streetfood culture. The tea leaves are brewed using a stocking filter in a large pot of water. Once the tea is dark in color and cooled, it's served over crushed ice with sweetened condensed milk. The sweet flavor of cha yen is commonly used to balance the spicy flavors of Thai cuisine. CHINA China remains the largest tea producer on earth, there you're more likely to be served tea than water. The offerings there are terrifically varied: Different regions produce black, oolong, yellow, white, green, or pu'er tea. Pu'er is the birthplaceof tea has grown for thousands of years in the Yunnan Province in southwest China, where tea trees are worshipped, this tea is legendary. It's made from the leaves of a tree known as the "wild old tree" and is fermented anywhere from weeks to decades. This means some pu'er can cost a fortune. The tea is typically sold as compressed cakes. Like fine wine, pu'er is best enjoyed slowly in small sips.

Over the years I have created several, but at the moment I have to suggest the "Cidade Velha", alluding to the part of Faro where we are located and the fact that all the ingredients are in the DNA of the Algarvian culture. Do you notice any difference in the personal tastes of certain nationalities compared to the Portuguese? Sweet and fruity flavours are always at the top of my preferences. However, I see a more marked culture in Cocktails with more alcoholic content, which is Old Fashioned and where the quality of the spirit is central. I believe it has a lot to do with the fact that the nationalities that visit us are mostly from countries with colder climates than ours. What inspired you to become a professional bartender? I think I was born with it, in fact, all my immediate family has always been involved in the restaurant business. My brother Telmo, who is 11 years older than me, has also followed this area, and seeing him go through this path has made me never consider any other profession. I can say that when I enrolled in the Hotel Management School of Coimbra in 2005 and they asked me what would be my second choice if I didn't get into the Rest/Bar course, I answered that if I didn't get in, there was no second choice and that I would try again the following year. How would you describe the cocktail menu at Cidade Velha Rooftop? I think the menu is quite versatile. We have plenty of options for all kinds of tastes. There are 21 alcoholic cocktails, 9 signature + 4 non-alcoholic cocktails that are also signature. The aim is to understand what our customers like the most so that we can make next year's menu even more suited to the palate of those who visit us. What is the stand out feature that makes this bar different? I have three points that I always try to put into practice wherever I go. Having a good atmosphere, delivering products with a good quality/price ratio and giving a high level of service. It's all a work in constant progress, but above all this is a space where you can relax, enjoy the company of friends and family, because having only about 40 seats, this is an appropriate space for those looking to eat, drink and catch up. Do you have any specific philosophy when it comes to the elements you put into your creations? I try to create as little waste as possible! I prioritise fresh, local (organic if possible) and in-season produce as we should be concerned about the ecological footprint we leave. In every creation I make it is in these two points that I invest more time. What is your signature cocktail and what is that cocktail that everyone has to try?

We have seen a large influx of people showing off their homemade cocktails during the pandemic. What's your number one tip for every bartender back home? Above all, moderation! Despite spending a lot of time locked indoors, falling into the bad habit of consuming alcoholic beverages every day can lead to addiction before you know it. Also, take the time to hit or work on an old idea that you never had a chance to do before. It was also a great time to educate yourself, as this is an area that is always evolving. The Algarve during the summer must surely be an incredibly unique experience to live through. What do you usually do in your free time and where do you usually go after your shift? The Algarve is a beautiful area to live in at any time of the year! (laughs) At the end of my shift, 90% of the time I go straight home to rest for the next day. Besides that, I'm currently teaching bar training at the Algarve Hotel School in Faro, so the little free time I have left I use to spend with family and close friends. Cocktail 1: Cidade Velha 40ml Medronho da Serra do Caldeirão 20ml Liqueur Don Cristina (Honey Brandy) 25ml Natural Lemon Juice from Algarve 25ml Natural Algarve Orange Juice 1bsp Algarve Fig Jam Filled with a foam of orange peel. Finally topped with some toasted almonds. Cocktail 2: Pinky Blinder 40ml Bulldog gin 15ml Lychee liqueur 15ml Home made Raspberry Syrup 1 Fresh Raspberry 20ml Natural lime juice 50ml Rocha pear nectar

Light - touch, high value tourism The last remaining Buddhist kingdom, up in the Himalayas, Bhutan is the world’s only carbon-negative country and models a less-is-more approach to hosting visitors. As tourism is so carefully regulated, those who are prepared to pay the premium to stay are among the lucky few to be welcomed into a compassionate, inclusive community, where there are few barriers between the Bhutanese and foreign guests. Amid emerald-green forests and glacial valleys, there's no straying from the country’s authentic, epoch-old way of living, and you have the comfort of knowing your environmental impact is minimal.

Top Destinations For Sustainable Travel Lets celebrate the destinations setting new benchmarks, spotlighting specific environmental issues and helping to make the world a better place for people and the planet, while also promising the best possible holidays for the conscious traveller.

Tanzania

One of Africa's best safari destinations Tanzania is one of sub-Saharan Africa's ecotourism destinations. From the pristine corals of Chumbe Island to the towering slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania is full of natural wonders, as well as fresh protections and reforestation efforts. The eco-friendly large concrete game lodges and beach resorts were built many decades ago without much thought about their impact to the environment. But these days, new camps are being built in a way that they can be completely removed and won't leave a lasting trace on the land. Home to seven UNESCO World Heritage sites and forty national parks and game reserves, Tanzania is a land of raw natural beauty, friendly people and more life-changing wild experiences assured at every turn,

Slovenia Perfectly preserved landscapes This compact Central European country, with its chocolate-box mountain scenery and medieval fairy-tale villages, punches above its weight in the conservation stakes. Its walkable, welcoming capital, Ljubljana, has long been a hit for eco-minded city breaks. And more than a 10th of its rolling countryside is formally protected, spanning Alpine peaks, ancient forests, Karst plateau, the Pannonian plains' vineyards and thermal waters and the 29-mile stretch of Adriatic coast. Consult the tourist board's Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism to navigate your way to the greenest hosts and camping sites.

Clean energy, freshest air Almost 80 per cent of Finland’s land is forest; its lakes are among the clearest and its air the cleanest in the world, according to the World Health Organisation. Well done to Visit Finland for launching its Sustainable Finland programme. The tourist board’s guide maps out a blueprint to help visitors plan the most eco-friendly escapes and engage with nature and local culture, knowing every step of their stay has been looked at through an economical, ecological, social and cultural lens. Finland also ranks as a hero on Yale’s Environmental Perform Index, which assesses 180 countries on environmental health and ecosystem vitality; plus the capital, Helsinki, is the city credited with making the biggest commitment to sustainability when it comes to public transport, which runs on electricity produced by water and wind power.

Best sustainable tourism practise This tiny South American country is a haven for ecotourists, with towering waterfalls, sea turtle strewn beaches, and rainforest lodges run by indigenous tribes. Guyana has expended considerable effort in recent years not only to develop new and innovative eco-friendly tourism but educate the world about its deep commitment to maximising the positive socio-economic and conservation outcomes from tourism.

Palau

Where tourists sign an eco pledge Back in 2017, this Pacific Ocean island was the first destination anywhere to insist visitors sign a voluntary eco pledge promising to be good environmental stewards for the duration of their stay, via a passport stamp. Until all countries introduce this, they’ll always have a top place in our hearts for setting this benchmark. Palau has been praised for its conservation of land and sea, and has a stark comparison with other island destinations that have followed old-fashioned tourism models from the 1980s where high-rises were allowed to be built by beaches, causing coastal erosion and destroying precious carbon-absorbing mangrove areas. We salute Palau for being considerate of local communities and making it easier for travellers to treat their home respectfully.

Rawanda Best wildlife programmes Rwanda gets high-fives for saving the wild mountain gorilla from extinction it has made a huge effort to save the critically endangered wild mountain gorilla, who faced extinction after decades of poaching and habitat loss. Their population is slowly on the rise as a result of Rwanda's move to use sustainable tourism as a vehicle to implement long-term conservational change. Through the tourism revenue-sharing scheme, proceeds from gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park go towards wildlife protection. Its not just the gorillas who have benefited - now with poaching at an all time low, lions and eastern black rhinos have been reintroduced to its safari land, turning the nation into a Big Five country once again.

Antigua & Barbuda

The sunniest of the Eastern Caribbean Islands The beautiful beaches including Barudas famous pink sand and warm waters surrounding the island of Antigua & Barbuda are enough of a pull for most tourists, but its fair shores are only the beginning. The country has shown true commitment to the environment and sustainability, from its ban of plastic bags and polystyrene products to its establishment of the “Green Corridor” – a collection of environmentally friendly hotels, resorts and businesses stretching along the southwest coast of Antigua to the village of John Hughes.

Costa Rica Sprawling, UNESCO-protected nature Here between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, more than a quarter of this Central American nation is set aside as protected parks and reserves, which are a precious safeguard against deforestation and logging. Three of the country’s national conservation areas and parks are UNESCO-protected, and much of its electricity is renewably sourced. Home to almost six per cent of the world’s species, Costa Rica is a world-leading protector of biodiversity, and it’s a dream holiday destination where you’re sure to encounter a dazzling cast of wildlife at every turn. Give your hectic life a beautiful break at the awe-inspiring Torel Palace, not just a hotel but an amalgamation of history, architectural beauty, literacy charm and exquisite cuisine.

LOCATION

Situated in the heart of Porto on a quiet less touristy street lies the decadent Torel Palace Porto. If you are keen to explore many of Porto's attractions, the hotel is a short walk away from the main square of Praça de Liberdade, São Bento Railway Station and Batalha Square which features São João National Theatre and Santo Ildefonso Church. A nice downhill walk will also take you the picturesque renowned Douro River.

STYLE & CHARACTER

The grandeur of the the hotels architecture is sure to take you back to the 19th century roomantic era and mesmerize your senses. The hotel created in the Palacete Campos Navarro and complted in 1861, belonged to to the Campos Navarros, a wealthy family whose fortune came from exporting products such as fabrics, wine, olive oil and cereals. Entering the hotel was like stepping into a fairytale palace as you are welcomed by an grand opulent chandleir and regal red carpets that invitingly continue up a wide stairwell. Peering up

through the stairwell of the four storey- building, in all its spendour is the magnifcicent skylight (claraboia). It elegantly consists of eight panels, four with floral motifs and four that symbolize the Campos Navarro family: Mercury, the Roman god of merchants; the Allegory of Industry; Minerva, the goddess of the arts and science; and the Allegory of Seafaring. Literature, the hotel's concept, is at the very essecence of the hotel. Paying homage to famous Portuguese men and women of literature, books can be discovered in nooks and crannies around the establishment and is even implemented in the architectual design, from grand paintings of authours, portraits in the ornate ceilings to the extrinsically designed alleviated old books in the reception and libray areas. This concept only adds more romance to an already enchanting palace and thus the hotel has created an aura of classical luxury entrapped in the magical spell of literature history.

You could simply relax and admire the ceiling of cascading books that dance around a beautiful chandlier. Whatever your purpose for the visit its a must. If in need of some additional relaxition then pamper yourself at the Calla Wellness Suite. For 50 years they have been transforming sea water into skin care products, Phytomer is one of the names in the exclusive portfolio of the spa used in face and body treatments. The hidden jewel and charm of the hotel and also one of the highlights of our stay was the outside common area set under a wisteira and chandlier clad terrace, accompanied by a breathtaking jade coloured pool. Whether dining or relaxing on the king-size pool lounges this part of the hotel needs to be experienced. We reccommend sipping a cockatil by the moonlit pool after sunset. you would be alas to spend the evening anywhere else.

a different Portuguese writer. We were accomadated in the Almeida Garrett suite which was presented upon a gold plaque with the room number before entering. We entered the room with a divine golden key adding further enchantment to our stay, a grand painting of the author presented itself beside a table of portuguese literature and delectable sweet delicacies a most welcoming touch. A large mirroed cube occupied the center of our room and within it a splendid marble bathroom with a his and her sink. Once you walk around your room to take it all in, you discover it in all its grandoise and appreciate that the added elements of comfort and contemporay design does not disturb the original classical architecture of the original palace. Our favourite memory was waking up to see above the extroadinary stucco on the high ceilings inundated with grand artisanal craftmanship a majestic feeling we will never forget.

FOOD & DRINK

Enthrall your senses by dining in the Blind restaurant that pays tribute to one of José Saramago’s most famous books, Essay on Blindness. The menu draws on local produce by acclaimed chef Vitor Matos that offers ‘moments’ in a blind experience whereby a menu is offered only after each course has been served. We devoured crab meat pâté, with watermelon and orange. Wild sea bass, green beans and citronella and mascarpone with camellias and biscuit. Finished off by an aged Port. The menu is seasonal and we recommend you do not miss a truly hedonistic experience. A gastro lunch is available on the terrace and the à la carte breakfast can be served to your room.

If travelling by car and in search of a carpark, the staff at the hotel will direct and meet you at a secure carpark a short distance from the hotel. The staff will also kindly carry your luggage and escort you to the hotel.

We highly reccommend the hotel for couples over young families, due to the design of the rooms and the facilities and services available.

Although they have an extensive and pleasing wine list reserve it for dinner and opt first for a cocktail from the senses selection during cocktail hour. We opted for the cocktail 'Blind' featured above. With tequila, hints of sweet and sour notes and rosemary it was a party on the palette. It took us a while to discover whether our room had a tv. It did indeed , however it is quirkily hidden in the mirror although with so many wonderful amenities to discover in the hotel you need not be preoccupying yourself with television.

BUSINESS & CAREER THREE STOCKS TO CONSIDER BUYING THIS SUMMER

Só um pensamento...

“There’s no shortage of remarkable ideas, what’s missing is the will to execute them.”

— Seth Godin

The coronavirus pandemic has proved to be a rollercoaster ride for financial markets around the world. During this time, the S&P 500 fell 30% faster than any other time in history. On the other hand, we also witnessed the greatest rebound after markets hit rock bottom. Since a low on March 23, 2020, the S&P 500 has risen by an incredible 88%. Though public markets remain volatile due to the Covid-19 pandemic, investors can still benefit by making sound investment decisions. The three stocks mentioned below have the potential to outperform the market this month. ZILLOW Zillow (NASDAQ: ZG), provides digital solutions for real estate. It facilitates the financing of mortgages, the sale and purchase of houses and listing of rentals. Analysts believes that real estate constitutes a $93 billion market, and Zillow seems to have the potential to disrupt the industry by providing modern solutions to conventional problems faced by consumers. The company's platform eliminates the need for haggling and streamlines processes that would otherwise take ages to complete. Furthermore, mortgage payments for sellers end on the closing date, as opposed to the norm, where consumers continue to pay until the property is actually sold. These factors have helped revenue more than double in the last three years. CANOPY GROWTH CORPORATION Canopy Growth Corporation (NASDAQ: CGC), consists of multiple brands such as Tweed and Spectrum which deal in medicines, hemp and recreational cannabis. As the stock is currently trading at a low of $25.57, the time to invest in it is now. The prospect of cannabis legalization in the United States has sparked interest in cannabis stocks. With Joe Biden's election victory and the Democrats regaining power, the chances of legalization have never been better. Canopy currently has production and distribution licenses in more than ten countries, allowing it to expand exponentially. In 2022, the Canadian cannabis market is expected to grow by 40%, and by approximately 30% between 2022 and 2024. SELECTQUOTE SelectQuote (NASDAQ: SLQT), is also a digital platform which helps consumers shortlist products related to life, health, home and auto insurance. The company earns revenue by marketing insurance products and charging commission. The company has grown rapidly in the last three years, with a compounded annual growth rate of 63%. As the company attracts genuine consumers, with roughly 20% of users ultimately purchasing a policy, insurance companies are compelled to use the platform. The gap in digital advertising for insurance products creates an ideal environment for the company to consistently multiply revenue, and for investors to benefit from potential high returns that it can achieve in the future.

WORKING LONG HOUR LEADS TO THE DEATH OF 745,000 PEOPLE A YEAR

The study by the WHO stated that working 55 or more hours per week is associated with a higher risk of a stroke and dying from ischemic heart disease, compared to working 35-40 hours a week. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO Director-General, pointed out that “The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly changed the way many people work, blurring the boundaries between home and work. with the added pressure of putting in longer hours to save your job and appease the boss, the risks of health diseases rises. Governments, employers and workers need to work together to agree on limits to protect the health of workers. One of the positive things to come out of the pandemic was the start of making it socially acceptable to talk about mental health issues, as studies have shown that people have endured a great deal of stress, anxiety and isolation during the pandemic.

Delta Air Lines Just Made A Controversial New Decision

Delta CEO Ed Bastian announced his company's vaccination policy and is the the first airline to go public with its plan. Firstly, any person joining Delta in the future, will mandate to get vaccinated before they can sign up with the company. Second, the airline won't require current employees, of which it has about 75,000, to get the vaccine, however if they decide to not get vaccinated many of them can expect their jobs to change. An immediate example he offered would be that employees who haven't been vaccinated might not be able to fly on international routes. That's because even if Delta or the United States doesn't require vaccinations, other countries might, and Delta has to comply with their laws when traveling within their borders.

5 MINUTES WITH ...

Luis Brito // PROFILE Where does your passion for community development and support come from? I won't say it's innate because it's something I haven't always done. If I'm not mistaken it was with the Vela Solidária project that awakened in me this desire to give of myself and actively contribute to a better society, a more equitable, more supportive and friendlier society. How did the "Teia d'Impulsos" project come about? The "Teia d'Impulsos" was born from the will of a group of friends to do something for their city, something that would create dynamics and would allow us to envisage a better future for our children. After about four years of meetings and gatherings, Teia D'Impulsos was founded on 16 March 2011, as a result of the fact that the Vela Solidária project had started its activities on 27 February of the same year. The will and mission were already determined and the need for a legal entity to manage Vela Solidária led to the foundation of Teia D'Impulsos. Tell us a little about your daily life and what your mission involves in this project. The fact that Teia D'Impulsos works in several areas means that the days are dynamic enough that we are never really tired of this or that project, of this or that function. We end the days simply exhausted, but with a great desire to come back the next day and complete the existing tasks or start new ones. At the moment, I am the general director, that is to say, apart from the knowledge I need to have of the various projects in the areas where we intervene (social, cultural, sports and environmental), my tasks are to motivate the team, coordinate some of the projects, manage the resources, establish and maintain partnerships and interface with the board. How did you come up with the idea of helping the most needy during the pandemic? Helping those who need it the most is our organisational mission. All the projects we develop have a social, aid or cooperation aspect. We understand that, in this way, we contribute more effectively to the development of the community and for this development to be sustainable. When the pandemic broke out in China, everyone said that it would not reach Portugal, but the truth is that two months later the reality

projects for the community. This meant keeping our work stations at full capacity, acquiring technological tools and specific software and, above all, teamwork between management, employees and volunteers that tested our limits.

Luís Brito In this edition we introduce you to Luís Brito, the executive president of the incredible association Teia D'Impulsos, which has done so much for the society in the Algarve and communities. A story of dynamism and resilience that is an inspiration to us all.

was different and the Algarve in particular suffered and suffers intrinsically from the direct and indirect consequences of this scourge. Our first reaction was to understand how we should reorganise ourselves and we immediately adopted a proactive attitude with the development of various projects and actions aimed at mitigating the consequences of the pandemic. Among the projects implemented and of specific response to the pandemic, I highlight REMAC19, a project to support the associative movement and to respond to the consequences of the pandemic. A diagnosis was made to the associative movement in Portimão, through a questionnaire, and from there support and preparation actions were developed so that the associative movement would be better able to respond to the constraints imposed by the pandemic. As we did not develop direct welfare actions for the population, we implemented two initiatives to collect foodstuffs to meet the needs of the social canteens in the municipality of Portimão, which resulted in the joint collection of more than two thousand kilos of foodstuffs, mostly fresh. Also in response to the pandemic situation and in order to give continuity to two specific projects of high value to the community, we adapted FICA - Férias Inclusivas para a Comunidade Algarvia (Inclusive Holidays for the Algarve Community) to an online model, aimed at children and young people with disabilities, and also adapted the tertulias that we have held since 2011 under the name of E-Teia D'Ideias, during which we address topics of general interest with the participation of experts and which are aimed at the general population. What did this action involve? These actions involved enormous resilience, as with the time and resources available we had to idealise, plan and execute high impact

They must have witnessed "very harsh realities" especially since the coming of the pandemic. What has been the most difficult situation you have faced so far? As I mentioned before, we do not develop actions or projects based on assistance, but we do it through other partner institutions and we have effectively had reports of parents who, due to unemployment, were unable to pay the rent or even buy food for the house. Or elderly people who reported that it did not make sense to continue living if, due to the mandatory isolation, they could not socialise. There were no situations that were harder than others! All situations were and still are hard, difficult to manage and the vast majority put people in unimaginable situations. What was the most rewarding part of this solidarity action during the pandemic? The most rewarding part was seeing the solidarity, the detachment of status and the availability to help, to donate personal goods and food, to help in the feeding centres, to collaborate without asking. This learning experience, which I hope will become part of the Portuguese social culture, not only in more difficult situations, but on a daily basis, is clearly the most gratifying thing I felt. What about the level of voluntary help? Have there been more people offering to help? There was much more availability, both personally and from companies, to help those who needed it most. This is an unquestionable fact and thanks to this reality it was possible to minimize many of the social dramas that emerged as a result of the pandemic. How can our readers join "Teia d' Impulsos"? Teia D'Impulsos is an association that, due to its diversity of action, has an increased potential to respond positively to the will and availability of citizens to join. Through our website www.teiadimpulsos.pt or social networks - Facebook, Instagram and Linkedin, all interested parties may reach us, become members, become volunteers or even present and develop projects within Teia D'Impulsos.

HEALTH & FITNESS

DOPAMINE FASTING, IS THE BIG TREND AMONGST CEOS You’ve probably heard of (and admittedly tried and tested) intermittent fasting, when you dont eat or drink (bar water) for a certain amount of hours throughout the day. Like all fasts, it is centered around deprivation. Now, imagine depriving yourself of happiness. Dopamine fasting is the biggest buzzword to spring about Silicon Valley at the moment, according to various news sources. Its based around how to feel nothing now, in order to feel more later, it comes as a direct response to the ever-increasing sensory overload we experience on a daily basis. Dopamine is often described as the ‘feelgood’ or ‘pleasure’ chemical, and plays a big role in motivation, and thereby often in happiness levels, too. It is triggered by external factors, or stimulation. Under dopamine fasting, the idea is to cut back on this stimulation, spanning everything from delicious food and alcohol, over to sexual activity and social media. Anything that could potentially ‘excite’ you, is to be avoided. The thought is that not engaging in these activities for some time will allow you to greater appreciate them later. The idea behind dopamine fasting is a fairone, especially now in times of beingconstantly online and reachable, and an ever-growing commercialism. On that note, and on that of rising stress levels and flailing mental health, it is also very linkable to self-awareness exercises, in the growing trend recently towards greater mindfulness. Give it a shot it’s a relatively easy to test and try, and seems to be one that is more relevant now than ever.

SOUND THERAPY THE NEW WELLNESS CRAZE There’s nothing quite like a pandemic to make us all re-evaluate our relationship with our health. But, while our focus quite naturally turns to our physical wellbeing, with diet and exercise taking centre stage, it’s just as important to take control of what’s going on in our heads too. If feelings of angst or mental fog are exacerbated by the lockdown, then sound therapy could be the lifeline you need. From Australian aboriginal tribes to ancient Greeks and shamanic practices of yesteryear, music has been used to heal, motivate and inspire for millennia. This ancient method is gaining new traction in modern times. Sound therapy involves resting with eyes closed, as a practitioner uses pure sound to take you into a calmer, alpha-dominant brain state. Instruments such as crystal singing bowls, Himalayan singing bowls, drums and gongs are used to create these therapeutic sounds. They work by using a process called auditory driving and sympathetic resonance – allowing your brainwaves to match the sound taking you into that dreamy state where rest and relaxation happens. It isn’t just an excellent stress reducer, your brain is also able to recharge and reorder your thoughts. The result? More mental clarity and even increased productivity. What can be better than that.

T

he genetic treatment that could extend your lifespan and prevents Alzheimer's

A genetic treatment has been developed that leads to fruit flies living as much as nine per cent longer. Two therapies were created which each target a protein and they both were found to stave off signs of Alzheimer's as well as elongating a healthy lifespan. A team of scientists from UCL were studying fruit flies to learn more about the impact insulin has on the body and ageing. Insulin is very important to development, but it appears that we may have too much of it late in life. Insulin signalling likely developed through evolution due to its benefits early in life, in spite of its detrimental effects later in life. Their research revealed flies have various chemicals and mechanisms to help regulate the response to insulin, which itself helps the body deal with sugar. They then honed in on FKH and FOXO due to their similarity to proteins seen in humans brains. By studying the impact they had on the fruit flies the researchers got an idea of what their impact may be for human health. Their research involved creating genetically altered flies with elevated and depleted levels of both proteins. It revealed overexpression of FOXO leads to a 'significantly increased healthy lifespan' of 8.8 per cent. For the neuron-targeting FKH, overexpression elongated healthy lifespan by 6.6 per cent. The treatments also reduced the buildup of amyloid, harmful brain proteins which are a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease. The neuronal treatment protected fly brains against the damage caused by amyloid-beta, one of the proteins thought to cause Alzheimer's disease, the treated flies in that experiment had improved motor behaviour and fewer protein aggregates in their brains, which suggests that a longer lifespan was accompanied by protection from one of the causes of dementia. Researchers revealed that the genes involved in the experiment have equivalents in humans which are very similar. There are also several drugs which target the insulin signalling network, so modifying an approved treatment to target these genes in people may be possible in the future. Studies on human cells would therefore be a crucial step before taking these findings into clinical use . They suggest that their best hypothesis at the moment is that these treatments help increase a process called autophagy (which literally means self-eating) in neurons, so that the cells can degrade and recycle the aggregates of protein that build up when there is too much amyloid in the brain, This is a particularly interesting direction, since a number of clinically approved drugs can increase autophagy, however they do not know yet whether the drugs could successfully be used to treat Alzheimer's disease. Also while the study identified a clear link between the genetic treatment and increased lifespan, how it did this still remains unknown. The full findings are published @ pnas.org.

Are you in love with a

Narcissist?

If you're dating a narcissist, they look at you every single day and think why the hell did I choose you. Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is a mental condition in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for excessive attention and admiration and a tell tale lack of empathy for others. Why would anyone be attracted to someone with such appalling characteristics in the first place? Because, like other abusers, they're good at disguising their true selves at the start. Narcissists often are special or outstanding in some way - better looking than most, more talented, intelligent or charismatic. Just not quite as extraordinary as they think they are.Their charm drags you in, and their constant chipping away at your self-esteem keeps you there. Is your relationship troubled, toxic and deeply unsatisfying? Exposer investigates how to tell if it's because you've hooked up with a narcissist.

N

arcissists are appealing for good reason: they're charming, compelling and don't hold back on the compliments. By the time you realize just how toxic a narcissist can be, you've likely already been duped into developing feelings for him or her. Of course, not everyone you date who's vaguely self-absorbed has full blown narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). It's important to note that narcissism exists on a spectrum, states Dr. Craig Malkin, an instructor of psychology at Harvard University and the author of Rethinking Narcissism: The Bad and Surprising Good ,About Feeling Special. Not all narcissists have NPD, Malkin states. Narcissist is just a label that indicates someone scores well above average on narcissism measures. They’re high in traits, but may or may not have the disorder. The term narcissism oftentimes gets thrown around, but it can be hard to pinpoint if you're actually dating a narcissist.

The official definition of a narcissist, is a person who often lacks empathy, acts entitled, arrogant, and prioritizes themselves above all else. This can impact all aspects of their lives including their money management, career, and above all else, their relationships. But when you're the object of a narcissist's affection, those traits may not be so clear. Narcissists typically shower their partners with love, in ways that make it difficult to process that subtle feeling of being undervalued and ignored. Those with narcissistic personality disorder believe that they’re superior to others and have little regard for other people’s feelings. But behind this mask of ultra-confidence lies a fragile self-esteem, vulnerable to the slightest criticism. We live in an increasingly narcissistic world. Hard statistics and science are pointing in this direction. The “look at me” mentality that is often promoted by social networks like Facebook has people positively enamored with the image they present to the world. In

addition, we may now be seeing the negative effects of the self-esteem movement on a larger scale. So how does this rise in narcissism impact our personal relationships? For one thing, more narcissism means more narcissistic relationships. Professor Brad Bushman of the Ohio State University put it bluntly, when he said: “Narcissists are very bad relationship partners.” Studies show that in a narcissistic relationship, your partner is more likely to engage in manipulative or game playing behaviors and less likely to be committed long-term. Many people who have NPD do not seek treatment and therefore are never diagnosed. Studies show that men are more likely to be narcissistic. Roughly 75% of the individuals diagnosed with NPD are men. Although almost everyone has some self-centered or narcissistic traits, most people do not meet the criteria for having a personality disorder. There is, however, a growing portion of the population that is displaying a greater number of toxic, narcissistic traits, which are having an adverse effect on their lives and the lives of people close to them, even if they do not meet the clinical diagnosis of NPD. Forming attachments to individuals who exhibit these negative traits often causes similar distress as a diagnosable narcissistic relationship.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF NARCISSISM While all narcissists are likely to show certain behaviors, not all narcissists are the same. In fact, there are two different types of narcissism, Grandiose Narcissism and Vulnerable Narcissism. These types of narcissism stem from different early childhood experiences to different behaviors in a relationship. Grandiose Narcissists display high levels of grandiosity, aggression and dominance. They tend to be more confident and less sensitive. They are often elitists and have no problem telling everyone how great they are. Usually grandiose narcissists were treated as if they were superior in their early childhood and they move through life expecting this type of treatment to continue. In relationships, grandiose narcissists are more likely to openly engage in infidelity or leave their partners abruptly if they feel that they are not getting the special treatment that they think they are entitled to. Vulnerable Narcissists, on the other hand, are much more emotionally sensitive. They have what Malik describes as a “fragile grandiosity,” in which their narcissism serves as a façade protecting deeper feelings of inadequacy and incompetence. Vulnerable narcissists swing back and forth between feeling superior and inferior. They often feel victimized or anxious when they are not treated as if they are special. This type of narcissism usually develops in early childhood as a coping mechanism to deal with abuse or neglect. In relationships, vulnerable narcissists often worry about how their partners perceive them. They can be very possessive, jealous and paranoid about their partners having flirtations or affairs. Below, Malkin and other experts shed light on the telltale signs you're in a relationship with a narcissist.

IN THE BEGINNING THEY LOVE BOMB YOU Narcissists are very, very good at turning on the charm when they first meet you. As far as they're concerned, you've got the looks of a young Elizabeth Taylor and the wit of a thousand Tina Feys. But don't get used to those compliments or the pricey dinners they treat you to -- it's not likely to last, states Dr. Ramani Durvasula, a licensed clinical psychologist and narcissism expert. The term 'swept off my feet' wasn't even close to what can happen. Even on the first date, they will load you with compliments. They have never met anyone like you. You have the best hair. The best smile. As the weeks went on, they will say they have never felt like this before, and tell you they love you within days, states Durvasula. She adds that, if someone comes on too strong, too soon, it's never a good sign but be especially cautious if it's teamed with self-absorption. That behavior is called love bombing a manipulation tactic but with a narcissist, the smothering, razzle-dazzle display has nothing to do with you, You merely supply whatever the narcissist wants at the time (sex, money, status, youth). As soon as the narcissist has you — like a kid with a toy — they become a bit disinterested pret-

ty quickly, and the devaluing cycle happens, and then it is officially toxic.

THEY OVERRACT WHEN YOU DISSAPOINT THEM You could have only been going out for six weeks before there birthday, so you buy them a gift, there favourite fragrance take them out for dinner. But there face will be like thunder. The restaurant wasn't special enough. You hadn't spent enough on the present. The words you wrote on the card were pathetic. They would change into someone you didn't recognise, states Malik. This is usually the first real alarm bell: when the great new person you've found suddenly reveals a dark side. The entertaining 'life of the party' becomes irrationally furious over something trivial. Or transforms into a cold, ruthless person who is eerily unemotional. Look for how the narcissist manages stress and disappointment, how they treat other people, how they speak about other people, do they pay attention when you or others are speaking, are they sensitive if you make an off-handed comment they perceive as an insult, are they entitled [like being] too good to stand in a line, get angry when they don't get their way, Durvasula states.

THEY CAN'T ADMIT WHEN THEY ARE WRONG There’s a right way and a wrong way to do things: Naturally, the right way is always the narcissist's way and the wrong way just by default is yours, confirms Michele Gilbert, author of Help! I'm in love with a Narcissist. And if you try to follow through on orders the narcissist barks, you'll still be doing it wrong. They tend to publicly lambaste you or anyone who dares do something not precisely to his or her liking. The way they see it, you didn't just make a mistake: you committed an atrocity and are accused of being stupid or incompetent. If they put you in the position of defending yourself, don't even attempt to explain. You will never get a narcissist to see your point-of-view or admit he was wrong, Gilbert adds. People with NPD constantly break promises, are notoriously unreliable, and frequently break the rules. Lockdown? What lockdown? That applies to other people, not them.Another key characteristic: belittling.Nothing you do or say will ever be good enough. The food you eat, the clothes you wear, the friends you have, the things you watch - they'll pick on everything. Narcissists put others down to make themselves feel superior. You may find yourself more and more controlled, isolated from things that matter to you, second-guessing yourself, walking on eggshells — all of which characterize the narcissistic relationship," Durvasula said. But if you bring up their unfair treatment, a narcissist will likely gaslight you — a manipulation tactic used to make someone question their perception of the truth and reality. They may tell you that you're misremembering an ugly fight where they called you names, say they misunderstood clear boundaries you verbalized, or blame their behavior on outside factors like stress or childhood trauma.

THEY'RE ENVIOUS OF YOUR RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS Initially, narcissists may tell you they admire the close knit-relationships you have with family and friends. But criticism of those same people soon follows, said clinical psychologist Margaret Rutherford. Your partner might isolate you from your friends, tell you when you're allowed to go out, and even what to wear according to what they want. Any disagreement in opinion can turn into a full-blown argument because they are the priority in their minds. Again, it’s all about control, Rutherford states, adding that the motivation is usually twofold: He or she may be envious of your relationships with others or want you more to themselves. And just by their very nature, the narcissist is demanding. They want to feel in control of you. This is just another way of doing that.

THERE BRAND OF EMPATHY IS SELF MOTIVATED Contrary to popular belief, most people on the narcissistic spectrum don't have a complete lack of empathy for others. It’s just that they’re far too concerned with their own preoccupations, needs and fears to show

it, Rutherford said. When they do express it, there's usually some alterior motivate for doing so. If they’re motivated, say by the need to get you into bed with them, they can be amazing listeners and their caring is genuine, but it may only come to them when there’s a payoff. If their empathy seems to come and go depending on what’s in it for them, beware.

confused, and you are often making excuses and rationalizations for the relationship," Durvasula states .All of the toxicity and gaslighting may leave you feeling hollow and without a sense of self in your relationship. It can leave you confused, full of self-doubt, anxious, self-blaming, other negative moods including apathy, depression, a sense of hopelessness, helplessness, powerlessness, increasing social isolation, a sense of shame.

CONVERSATIONS ARE ONE SIDED

WHAT ARE SOME THINGS A PERSON CAN DO TO DEAL WITH A NARCISSISTIC PARTNER?

Good luck getting a word in edgewise while having a conversation with a narcissist. Dominating the conversation even when the topic relates entirely to you is a hallmark trait of the narcissist. They may feign interest in your hobbies, but deep down, they can't wait to to hijack the conversation and offer up their superior opinion. Their interest is always short-lived, states Gilbert. Over time, you will notice that every topic is skillfully turned into an opportunity for the narcissist to brag or boast about their favorite topic: the narcissist! A simple conversation about your new car will likely turn into an opportunity for them to talk about the rare sports car that he is importing from Germany for example.

THEY'LL FIGHT TO STOP YOU LEAVING THEM If they don't care, they won't even notice if you leave, right? Wrong. No-one likes being dumped but narcissists take rejection even more personally. YOU'RE leaving THEM? That can't be right! This is why they will pull out all the stops to prevent you. The person who initially charmed, remerges. They say all the right things, convince you they really do value you. And it works…for a little while. Until the toxic cycle starts again. (If your relationship is on-again, off-again, this might be one reason why.) If they twig that you're serious and the relationship really is over, it's gloves off. You thought they were bad before? You ain't seen nothing yet states Malkin. They bad-mouth you to friends. Troll you on social media. Spread nasty rumours. Try to date your best friend. Anything to make you look bad and to restore their 'reputation' of being someone everyone wants to be with.

THEY OFTEN CHEAT AND WON'T COMMIT And wait, there's more. Not only do they ridicule you, criticise you and insist you live on scraps of attention and affection, while you're expected to remain doggedly faithful, they are not. Narcissists don't like to commit because they're constantly on the lookout for someone who might be a better 'catch'. If they need to step outside the relationship to test out a prospective better bet, they will. With no remorse and guilt free. Your partner's ticking every box but you're still not convinced you should walk?

THEY'RE OFTEN ABOVE AVERAGE ATTRACTIVE Face it: the narcissist's style and good looks may have been one of the first things that drew you in. But the need to look good is not a healthy vanity with the narcissist; it's just another way to gain the adoration that they run on, Malkin said. Sorry to say, but if your partner wears sexy outfits or always dresses to nines, odds are they’re more narcissistic than most of us or worse, he states. Manipulative, coldly calculating narcissists aren't better looking from birth, but they’re really good at looking sharp something called 'effective adornment’.

YOU MAKE EXCUSES FOR THEIR BEHAVIOUR If you find yourself defending your partner's behavior, toxicity, and in some cases abuse, you likely are dating a narcissist. Durvasula said that if you say things like "it will get better" or blame your partner's behavior on stress, a "tough childhood," or say they "didn't really mean it" these are all red flags. These are relationships when you often feel you are upside down and

If you find yourself in a narcissistic relationship, you can first recognize what you have chosen and reflect on the unconscious motives that might have led you to choose such a partner. Did you have a self-centered parent? Are you more comfortable with your partner being in control, so you can then take be more passive? Do you get a sense of worth from being attached to someone who is in the spotlight? Does the negative image of yourself they foster with their criticisms and superior attitudes resonate with your own critical thoughts about yourself? Many people who fall in love with narcissists have issues around co-dependency. They will put up with a certain amount of abuse because they don’t feel confident enough in themselves to set boundaries or be on their own. Understanding your role in the narcissistic relationship is important. You can then start to challenge yourself to change your half of the dynamic. This will, in turn, challenge your partner to change their style of relating. You can recognize the fragility of your partner’s self-esteem and have compassion for the fact that his or her inflated sense of self, superiority and grandiosity is a cover up for the flip side of self-hate and feelings of inadequacy. You can also develop your own self-confidence and self-worth by learning to practice self-compassion. Don’t be a victim. In all encounters, act equal, and treat your partner as an equal.

HOW CAN PEOPLE FACE AND DEAL WITH THEIR OWN NARCISSISM? A narcissist can challenge and overcome their narcissism by recognizing and separating from both the self-soothing, self-aggrandizing and self-attacking attitudes of their critical inner voice. One method for doing this is through Voice Therapy states pyschologist Kristin Neff. Narcissists further need to differentiate from negative traits of their parents or early caretakers that they are still acting out in their current lives. Another way to cure narcissism is to foster self-compassion rather than self-esteem. Dr. Kristin Neff has done extensive research on self-esteem versus self-compassion. The difference between self-esteem and self-compassion is that self-esteem centers on evaluating yourself in relation to others and emphasizes a need to be special. While self-compassion focuses on “treating oneself with kindness, recognizing one’s shared humanity, and being mindful when considering negative aspects of oneself.” Dr. Neff ’s studies have found that self-esteem leads to higher levels of narcissism, but self-compassion does not. Self-compassion actually combats narcissism because it includes the idea of a shared humanity with all other human beings, which leads to more compassion for others. Self-compassion also fosters real self-awareness, a trait many narcissists lack, as it promotes that we be mindful of our faults, which is the first step to changing negative traits in yourself.

AND IF THEY DO NOT COMMIT TO THERAPY... It's a rare narcissist who will admit they have a problem. They're perfect, after all, it's you who has the problem not realising that! If they do end up seeking help, it's usually for the fall out: depression, drug or alcohol use. The only way to fix your relationship with a high scoring narcissist is to get out - fast. Relationships with narcissists are typically toxic, so cutting ties is the best next step. Its recommended to go to a therapist with experience dealing with narcissists as they can recognize the warning signs and help work through the anxiety you might be feeling about the breakup. Don't argue with them over why you're leaving, it's pointless. Don't give them another chance. Block them from your socials and phone and ignore any attempts they make to win you back. Then surround yourself with people who are capable of love and empathy and affection, to remind yourself of what you were missing…and be eternally grateful you dodged the bullet.

MEN’S Stuff OUR PICK OF BOND'S BEST CARS Pick a vehicle — any vehicle. Got it? Now try to remember when James Bond crashed, commandeered or captained it. Because, in all likelihood, at some point in the last 60 years, he has. 27 films of globe-trotting and jet-setting have given 007 ample opportunity to build an enviable, eclectic garage. And he hasn’t disappointed. Whilst we eagerly await the release of No Time To Die, we pay homage to the superspy's finest automotive cars and moments.

1971 FORD MUSTANG MACH 1 - DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER For those of you who haven’t seen Diamonds Are Forever – and you should, Connery shoots a fire extinguisher straight into someone’s face at one point — the Ford Mustang Mach 1 will forever be remembered as the car that drove into an alley on two wheels, then came out the other side on the other two wheels. With a ‘Sportsroof ’ body, chrome pop-open gas cap and hood scoop, it was arguably too brash for the sleek British secret agent. ASTON MARTIN VALHALLA - NO TIME TO DIE Allow us to introduce the Aston Martin Valhalla. Just three months before the cameras started rolling on Daniel Craig’s upcoming No Time To Die Eon got in touch with the operations team to get a drivable Valhalla. A drivable Valhalla didn’t exist — but Aston built one, and it has been squeezed into the final cut. Even if he’s not technically driven it yet, it’s still distinctively designed and outrageously fast enough to make the list. TOYOTA 2000 GT ROADSTER - YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE Daniel Craig famously voted this as his favourite Bond car of all time — but it was Connery’s 007 who got behind the wheel of the Japanese pocket rocket. The Toyota wasn’t typically a convertible, but production had to do away with the roof to accommodate Connery’s 6’2” frame — and thus one of the most unlikely, endearing Bond cars of all time was born. ASTON MARTIN DB10 - SPECTRE Good God, Bond. Could you get any slicker? If that choreographed car chase through the dusky streets of Rome wasn’t cool enough, 007 tears through it in an Aston Martin DB10 he stole from 009. Created specifically for the film — the first time Aston had done such a thing — this 4.7 litre, V8-powered, six-speed sex machine is perhaps the coolest thing about Spectre. And this is a film that, lest we forget, sees Bond sledge the fuselage of a crashed plane to Lea Seydoux’s rescue. LOTUS ESPIRIT S1 - THE SPY WHO LOVED ME There’s no arguing that Roger Moore's Bond white Lotus Esprit S1 is the king of the Esprits, and one of the best Bond cars of all time. It was a car that turned into a submarine — the stuff of teenage boy’s, not to mention grown men’s, dreams. Shot in the Bahamas, the now-iconic scene used a full-sized model, with folding wheels, fins and a periscope, transformed by Perry Submarines of Florida. It’s a piece of gadget-laden film history. ASTON MARTIN DB5 - GOLDFINGER Nobody does it better — the Aston Martin DB5 not only in our list but we think the top spot. So much so that, when No Time To Die hits cinemas this year, it will have starred in eight James Bond films. Eight! That even overtakes Roger Moore’s tally The DB5 hasn’t aged a day. With a straight-six, four-litre engine, the car is almost as spectacular off-screen as it is on — but Q-branch’s special tweaks such as, smoke screens, oil slicks, machine guns and bullet shields! The other cars didn’t stand a chance…

ART & CULTURE

Artwork from International artists made during the pandemic While working alone during the pandemic may have suited the members of the international artistic community, others feed off intimate interaction and visual stimulus from beyond their immediate world. In the absence of physical human connection and with movement drastically limited, many artists have had to turn inwards for inspiration. Whether that means reaching into the back catalogs of their memories, or creating new and entirely imagined worlds, the creative response to the coronavirus crisis has been extraordinary. With that in mind, we reveal some great work from artists living around the world that reflects the times we are living in today.

Happiness - Kelly Wanjira Kinyua, Kenya " These days I have taken a step back, stopped reacting and reconnected."

Wall Mural - Pony Wave, USA. Pony Wave depicts 'the new normal' of two people kissing while wearing face masks on Venice Beach.

Social Distancing in the Mission -Jen Potter, USA " Even though we can’t socialize in the usual way, seeing everyone make an effort strengthens the sense of community I wanted to share that feeling.”

Moody Little Guy - Elizabeth, lana, USA. inspired by long queues at foodbanks. This lady donated the proceeds of her artwork to help local foodbanks. Distraction - Wilfrid Wood, England " Having to adjust has been difficult. However, I have found sanctuary in the act of making".

Reviveresco tropicae - Zuania Muñiz Meléndez, Puerto Rico "We are new flowers that emerge with more strength, ready to face the new challenges that lie ahead".

Here's What People In 1921 Predicted Will Occur Nowadays

When you look back to history, you can feel more optimistic about our future. We entered the new year, full of hope and trepidation and the scars of 2020 we thought would be left behind us, so the team at Exposer thought it would be helpful to see what people from a full century ago envisioned for us. They’d recently survived World War I and the Spanish Flu of 1918, and they were witnessing a technological revolution. Electricity, commercial aviation, radio, and many other innovations were new. How, they wondered, would these things transform their world? It should make us think: For all the real hardships we face, we are also living in someone else’s dream world… and we now get to build towards our own future dreams. Below are some of the predictions:

ELECTRICITY POWERED OUR WHEELS

Charles Steinmetz, an electrical engineer known as “The Wizard of Schenectady”, wrote a piece that was widely distributed at the time. Steinmetz saw the future of electric transportation, but we’re still catching up to it. Here he imagines Tesla cars and Lime scooters… and a storage solution we haven’t quite adopted yet. He wrote that with the electrical improvements to come, there will be a change in our transportation system. There will be more electric automobiles and electric bicycles and tricycles will be developed. Because of their simplicity and low price they will be available to almost everyone. Also our cellars will be the place to keep them.

BOOKS WILL BE READ TO US

In August of 1921, the Miami News ran a column by Moses Folsom called “One Hundred Years From Now”. Among his great predictions: He described what’s essentially the audio book. He wrote that by 2021 the phonographic principle may have become practically infallible and the best books will be reproduced in plates for use in many different styles of speaking machines. The exact tones of the elocutionist in speaking the words of the dramatist, poet, teacher, philosopher and novelist will be imitated in the library or parlor of every home. The exact tones of the sweet singer will also be faithfully reproduced on records to last long after the voice of the singer is silent in the sleep that knows no waking.

ENTERTAINMENT WILL HAPPEN AT HOME

Steinmetz was ready to Netflix and chill. Here’s what he imagined: There will be no need to go to some congested, poorly ventilated hall for a musical concert. We just push a plug into a base receptacle, as we do for the vacuum cleaner or table lamp, and we can have the concert brought into our homes. He predicted, music will be supplied by a central station and distributed to subscribers by wire, just as they got their telephone service back then. Perhaps this may be by wireless, the home being equipped with a radio-receiving apparatus. With this arrangement improved, he predicted that we may hear grand opera stars as they sing in European capitals while sitting in our libraries at home.

FASTER BETTER BRIGHTER

Moses Folsom also rattled off some big predictions—some of which came true, and some of which (like eco-conscious manufacturing) we’re still working towards. He predicted , moving sidewalks and elevators that may be found in the densely populated cities, and tubes may connect cities and men will travel in them at a speed that is dazzling to the senses. Colored photography will be a fact and vast improvements made in movie pictures. The tides may be used for power as well as the rays of the sun for heat and power. He goes n to predict, utensils and dwellings will be manufactured largely of pulps and cements so as to utilize vegetation and stone in every stage of decade, ordinary waste or unfitness.

WE WILL BE MASTERS OF TEMPERATURE

Steinmetz also predicted a revolution in home environments:. He predicted, that when heating is done all electrically, and if you want 70 degrees in your home, you shall set the thermostat at 70 and the temperature will not rise above that point. This temperature will be maintained uniformly regardless of the weather outside. This will also hold true on the warm day when the temperature outside may be 90 or 100 degrees. The same electrical apparatus will cool the air. And what’s more, it will keep the humidity normal at all times.

ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS ABOUT COURAGE AND KINDNES TO LIFT YOUR SPIRITS IN UNCERTAIN TIMES In troubled times, it can be difficult to escape feelings of anger and helplessness – and even harder to feel optimistic about the future. Thank goodness, for books: not only can they help us to escape from reality, but they can also instill us with hope. More importantly, they can take us on a journey of self-discovery, helping us to reconnect with those all-important values of generosity, empathy, bravery and self-belief. With that thought in mind, Exposer has sought out the books which can teach us to have courage and kindness. Prepare to have your faith in humanity restored… Wonder by RJ Palacio tells the story of 10-year-old Auggie, who has craniofacial abnormalities. After years of home schooling, he decides he wants to go to “real” school. It is a story of triumph, hope and courage – all made possible through compassion. And it is Auggie – despite being horribly bullied – who is the most compassionate of all. It’s misleading to label this a young adult novel: this is fiction for all of us

“There are so many ways to be brave in this world. Sometimes bravery involves laying down your life for something bigger than yourself, or for someone else. Sometimes it involves giving up everything you have ever known, or everyone you have ever loved, for the sake of something greater. But sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it is nothing more than gritting your teeth through pain, and the work of every day, the slow walk toward a better life. That is the sort of bravery I must have now.” There are many kinds of bravery – and Veronica Roth's Allegiant makes a point of teaching us about more than just the obvious one. Elif Shafak’s slim polemic How to Stay Sane in an Age of Division is a kind of manifesto for compassion. In a world of fake news, Twitter outrage and echo chambers, the novelist examines the polarisation of modern and political debate, and searches for truth and commonality. We are almost overwhelmed by the pandemic, impending economic collapse and climate change, but Shafak argues for conscious optimism. This pamphlet shows the power of stories to unite us, offering hope, faith in humanity and a glimpse of a more compassionate future. “That's when I realized that certain moments go on forever. Even after they're over they still go on, even after you're dead and buried, those moments are lasting still, backward and forward, on into infinity. They are everything and everywhere all at once. They are the meaning.” Sam Kingston is 17 years old, overwhelmingly popular, and living the high school life of her dreams. And then she’s killed in a shock car accident. She vividly describes her dying moments – and forces us, the reader, to endure the horror and pain of her last breaths. As the story of Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver progresses, Sam comes to understand exactly how much power she truly holds over her own life, and how even the smallest changes might affect everyone else around her. "Nolite te bastardes carborundorum. Don't let the bastards grind you down.” The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood is a tale of terror, oppression and prevalent misogyny – but, crucially, it’s one of bravery, too. When everyone around you is marching to the same terrible beat, it’s worth remembering that any act of courage, however seemingly insignificant, may just be the push that someone else out there needs to make a difference. And, more importantly, it will remind them that no matter how dark the world has become, they are not alone. The most original, heart-stopping debut novel is Derek Owusu’s That Reminds Me. It explores multiple themes: family, identity, sexuality, addiction, violence and religion. As he grows into adolescence the narrator, K, finds friends – and love – yet he begins breaking into pieces, the narrative fracturing along with his psyche. The novel dances somewhere between poetry and prose as it charts his journey from birth to adulthood, scattering fragments of memory. The absence of belonging in K’s life has a devastating impact on his sense of self. He is so deserving of compassion. We all are.

Tom Cruise Is Officially Going To Space To Film His Next Movie The 2020-2023 International Space Station manifest shows that Tom Cruise is officially headed into space to film his new action-adventure movie. The massive star has long been known for his role in action-packed films, and is something of an adrenaline junkie, who seeks to push his limits to the maximum and frequently does his own stunts. Earlier this year, it was revealed that Cruise was working alongside Elon Musk and NASA to film a new movie in outer space. While the upcoming project doesn't even have a title yet, Cruise has been in talks with Musk's SpaceX program, as well as NASA, to work towards this new goal of the first movie shot in space.
